2022—2023 EEN SEIZOEN VAN NIEUWE COLLECTIEVEN Ons nieuwe seizoen begint waar het vorige eindigde: na de tragische “terreur op zijn best” waarmee Luanda Casella in Ferox Tempus seizoen 21−22 afsloot, zoeken we komend seizoen samen naar nieuwe wegen richting een andere toekomst. En het is precies het woord ‘we’ dat het verschil zal maken. De schijnbaar eindeloze pandemie heeft ons teruggeplooid op onszelf, maar heeft ons ook opnieuw de schoonheid van het collectief doen voelen. Na jarenlang aangekondigde kantelpunten van ons ecosysteem, is de situatie van de wereld niet dramatisch, maar tragisch. Net daarom willen we bij NTGent een magische cirkel openen – vol rituelen, discussies en nieuwe projecten. In het seizoen 22−23 creëren we samen opwindende, experimentele en wonderlijke vormen van collectiviteit.

Met ONE SONG — de vierde productie al in onze reeks Histoire(s) du Théâtre — gaat Miet Warlop op zoek naar de drijvende kracht in haar werk. Wat inspireert ons? Wat brengt ons samen? Warlop nodigt alle toeschouwers uit om samen een band te vormen en elke avond met haar mee te zingen. In Katie Mitchells voorstelling over de klimaatverandering, A Play for the Living in a Time of Extinction, wordt het publiek geconfronteerd met de miljoenen doden die onze westerse beschaving al heeft veroorzaakt. Samen met Martha Balthazar, die het stuk voor NTGent bewerkt, creëert Mitchell een diepgravend, donker en bedroefd requiem – maar wel een requiem dat zich uiteindelijk oplost in een utopisch koor, verenigd in het streven om een bewuster, duurzamer en menswaardiger leven te leiden. Maison Maeterlinck / Theater Immobiel van Thom Luz stelt de vraag welk theater na onze tragische, solipsistische tijdsgeest komt? Hij gaat op zoek naar een collectief, objectief theater, een nieuwe gemeenschap van mensen en dingen, gebaseerd op teksten van de Gentse symbolist Maurice Maeterlinck.

“We weten pas wie we zijn in wisselwerking met anderen,” schreef de Duits-Amerikaanse filosoof Hannah Arendt ooit. Princess Isatu Hassan Bangura kijkt voor Great Apes of the West Coast terug op haar jeugd in Sierra Leone, haar vaderland dat ze twaalf jaar geleden verliet. Ze vindt zichzelf terug in een cultuur die vreemd is geworden en toch de hare is. En wat als we teruggaan in de tijd? Zo stellen Jesse Vandamme en Werktoneel zich de vraag wat er overblijft van het nihilistische naoorlogse universum van auteur Willem Frederik Hermans. Na het eenzame isolement uit Solipsists (2022) definiëren ze een collectieve en obsessieve chaos in hun nieuwe voorstelling Gruis / aan de twijfel. Met het laatste stuk van het seizoen, Antigone in de Amazone van Milo Rau, overschrijdt NTGent de grenzen van het westerse denken. “De filosofie van de toekomst zal uit de bossen komen, uit de favela's en de banlieues, uit kraakpanden en achtergelaten monoculturen,” schreef Rau na zijn laatste reis naar de Amazone, vlak voor Covid-19 het theater lamlegde. Samen met activisten van de Braziliaanse Beweging van Landloze Boeren trekt NTGent een wereld binnen van onverwachte nieuwe solidariteit en magisch denken los van alle beperkingen.

Editorial

2022—2023 A SEASON OF NEW COLLECTIVES Our new season starts where the previous season ended: after the tragic “terror at its best”, to quote the play by our house artist Luanda Casella, which ended season 21−22. Together, we search for new ways into a different future. And it’s precisely the ‘we’ that will make the difference. The seemingly endless pandemic has turned us on ourselves, but it has also made us feel anew the beauty of the collective. After years of announced tipping points of our ecosystem, the global situation is not dramatic, it’s tragic. That’s why we want to open a magical circle at NTGent – full of rituals, discussions, and new projects. In season 22−23, we will together create exciting, experimental, and wonderful ways of collectivity.

With ONE SONG – already the fourth production in our series Histoire(s) du Théâtre – Miet Warlop goes on a journey to find the driving force in her work. What inspires us? What brings us together? Warlop invites all audience members to form a band and sing with her every night.

In Katie Mitchell’s play about climate change, A Play for the Living in a Time of Extinction, the audience is confronted with the millions of deaths that our western civilisation already has caused. Mitchell — together with Martha Balthazar, who adapts the play for NTGent — creates a deep, dark, and distressed requiem — but one that resolves itself in the end in a utopic choir, united in the will to live a more conscious, sustainable, dignified life. Maison Maeterlinck / Theater Immobiel by Thom Luz poses the question of what comes after our tragic, solipsistic zeitgeist. He searches for a collective, objective theatre, a new community of people and things, based on texts of Ghentian symbolist Maurice Maeterlinck.

“We only know who we are in exchange with others,” Hannah Arendt once wrote. In Great Apes of the West Coast, Princess Isatu Hassan Bangura looks back at her youth in Sierra Leone, her homeland she left 12 years ago – to find herself in a culture that has become foreign and yet is her own. And what if we go back in time? Jesse Vandamme and Werktoneel ask themselves what is left of the nihilistic post-war universe evoked in the works by author Willem Frederik Hermans. After the solitary isolation from Solipsists (2022), they define a collective and obsessive chaos in their newest performance Gruis / aan de twijfel. With the last play of the season, Milo Rau’s Antigone in the Amazon, NTGent crosses the borders of western thinking. “The philosophy of the coming time will come from the forests, from the favelas and the banlieues, from squats and abandoned monocultures,” as Rau wrote after his last trip to the Amazon, just before Covid. Together with the activists from the Brazilian Landless Movement, NTGent sets out into a world of unexpected new solidarities and magical thinking above all limitations.

ETCETERA X NTGENT nl Vier keer per jaar organiseren Etcetera, het tijdschrift voor podiumkunsten, en NTGent een open redactie rond een vraag of probleem op de bühne van een van onze zalen. Tijdens de eerste edities reflecteerden we samen over de toekomst van de podiumkunsten, podiumkunstenonderwijs en psychische kwetsbaarheid in onze sector. De vierde editie strijkt op 10 september neer in NTGent Minnemeers. Denk met ons mee tijdens boeiende panelgesprekken, scherpe debatten en een groot Gents volksassemblee. We voorzien verschillende activiteiten (denk yoga, een muzikale stadswandeling, of een performance), een lekkere vegetarische maaltijd en natuurlijk: muziek!

ONE SONG HISTOIRE(S) DU THÉÂTRE IV MIET WARLOP & IRENE WOOL

! en " nl nl Wat is je geschiedenis als theatermaker? Op uitnodiging van NTGent formuleert Miet Warlop een antwoord zoals alleen zij dat kan.

In de reeks Histoire(s) du Théâtre is ze de vierde regisseur die — na Milo Rau, Faustin Linyekula en Angélica Liddell — de uitdaging aangaat om een werk te creëren waarin heden, verleden en toekomst elkaar op een verrassende manier ontmoeten. ONE SONG − Histoire(s) du Théâtre IV speelt zich af in het unieke universum van Warlop, waar een groep performers de arena betreedt voor een betoverend ritueel over afscheid, leven en dood, hoop en wedergeboorte.

In deze nieuwe productie weerklinkt een geschiedenis die voor Warlop zowel een artistieke als een persoonlijke betekenis heeft. Haar reflectie over theater als kunstvorm leidt tot een fysiek concept waarin we elementen uit vorige producties herkennen. Zo vormde het rituele concert met choreografisch patroon de basis voor GHOST WRITER AND THE BROKEN HAND BREAK (2018). De uitnodiging om samen te ademen om onze angsten en demonen uit te drijven, zagen we in FRUITS OF LABOR (2016), een voorstelling die werd gebruikt als ‘een pijnstiller voor de wereld’. Het typeert Warlops artistieke signatuur dat dergelijke thema’s en motieven soms jaren later weer opduiken: in haar oeuvre is alles met elkaar verbonden, impliciet of expliciet. Het is circulair, zoals het leven zelf, in vele opzichten.

De fysieke inspanning als metafoor is een ander element van het onderzoek dat Warlop startte in SPORTBAND / AFGETRAINDE KLANKEN (2005), destijds gemaakt als een requiem en eerbetoon aan haar overleden broer Jasper. Via de metafoor van een livewedstrijd/ concert, inclusief commentator en cheerleader, nodigt Warlop ons uit om een gemeenschap te vormen en onszelf als in een viering te overstijgen. Zo wordt het tijdelijke het universele en wordt het persoonlijke iets collectief. Dat is de subtekst van ONE SONG: hoe één lied betekenis kan geven aan een hele samenleving.

In the series Histoire(s) du Théâtre, she is the fourth director to accept the challenge of a creation in which present, past and future meet each other in an unexpected way — after Milo Rau, Faustin Linyekula and Angélica Liddell. ONE SONG − histoire(s) du Théâtre IV is set in the unique universe of Warlop, where a group of performers enters the arena for a mesmerising ritual about farewell, life and death, hope and rebirth.

In this new production a history resonates that has both artistic and personal significance for Warlop. Her reflection on theatre as an art form leads to a physical concept in which we recognise elements from previous productions. The ritual concert with a choreographic pattern was the basis for GHOST WRITER AND THE BROKEN HAND BREAK (2018). The invitation to breathe together to exorcise our fears and demons, is something we’ve seen in FRUITS OF LABOR (2016), using the performance as ‘a painkiller for the world’. It typifies Warlop’s artistic signature that such themes and motifs sometimes resurface years later: in her oeuvre, everything is connected, implicitly or explicitly. It is circular, like life itself, in many ways.

The physical effort as metaphor is another element of the research that Warlop started in SPORTBAND / AFGETRAINDE KLANKEN (2005), made at the time as a requiem and tribute to her deceased brother Jasper. Through the metaphor of a live competition/ concert, including a commentator and a cheerleader, Warlop invites us to form a community and lift each other up, as in a celebration. The temporary thus becomes the universal, and the personal becomes something of the collective. That is the subtext of ONE SONG: how one song can give meaning to a whole society.

nl Lieve Katie, Wat een plezier je te ontmoeten in deze 2D-wereld van woorden die we kennen als mail. Het is een vreemde werkelijkheid: mijn woorden zullen afstanden afleggen maar ik zal zelf geen vin verroeren. De woorden van dit theaterstuk reizen ook rond, jij kreeg ze op bezoek in Lausanne en nu zullen ze mij bezoeken in Gent. Ik hoop dat je sporen hebt achtergelaten en ik beloof je dat ik hetzelfde zal doen.

Toen ik dit stuk voor het eerst las, moest ik denken aan die keer dat het noordpoolgebied in brand stond. Herinner je je dat? In september 2020 stond het werelddeel dat bestaat uit ijs letterlijk in brand. Het voelde als een vreselijk slechte grap, ‘Brand op de Noordpool’ klinkt meer als een verschrikkelijke titel voor een sciencefictionstrip of als een punkband op een middelbare school dan als een nieuwskop. Maar als je erover nadenkt, moeten zinnen als ‘de Noordpool smelt’, ‘het Amazonewoud verdwijnt’ of ‘de zee raakt leeg van vis en vol plastic’ ooit net zo gek hebben geklonken. Leerkrachten moeten ze ooit hebben gebruikt om hun studenten voorbeelden te laten zien van absurditeiten of van poëzie. En die brachten de leerlingen aan het lachen omdat absurde dingen grappig zijn en omdat het fijn is te weten dat sommige dingen gewoon niet kunnen. Dat vissen niet kunnen zingen. Maar we raken gewend aan de vreemdste dingen, aan woorden die reizen, aan wouden die verdwijnen en aan ‘plastic soep’. We accepteren deze lachwekkende dingen als een nieuwe werkelijkheid, we noemen het niet langer krankzinnig en stellen geen vragen meer. En dan merken we veel te laat dat we niet echt kunnen ademen in deze nieuwe vreemde werkelijkheid, net zoals een vis niet kon zingen in de vorige. Blijkbaar zijn wij nu de absurditeit die niet langer strookt met de werkelijkheid die we hebben aanvaard.

Klimaatverandering heeft soms iets vreemd poëtisch, bijvoorbeeld toen het veel sneeuwde in april, het jaar waarin Prince stierf — een van zijn liedjes heet Sometimes it snows in April. Of de manier waarop een vervuilde lucht extra roze kleurt als de nacht valt. Klimaatverandering is enger dan de ergste apocalyptische film, griezeliger en onvoorstelbaarder dan alle sciencefiction die we kennen. Het is een onmogelijk verhaal om te brengen, want zelfs als we de feiten begrijpen, slagen we er niet in ze te geloven. Wat dus met klimaatverandering op de planken? Wat met een theater op een brandende planeet?

Ik hoop snel van je te horen en ik weet zeker dat ik je tegenkom tussen de regels van het stuk.

nl Hallo Martha, Het doet mij ook plezier om je in de ether te ontmoeten en ik ben heel blij dat je Miranda’s stuk bij NTGent gaat regisseren.

Ik heb het gevoel dat alle betrokkenen bij deze productie deel uitmaken van een estafetteloop, waarbij het stokje van de tekst en het onderwerp wordt doorgegeven door de ene regisseur aan de andere of door het ene theater aan het andere.

Jij schrijft over de sporen die lopen tussen de producties en ik zie het meer als een proces waarin fysieke inspanning wordt overgedragen. De inspanning die het vergt van elke regisseur om iets wezenlijks te maken, de inspanning van fietsers om trapkracht voort te brengen, de inspanning van de organisatie die op elke locatie een andere productie moet opzetten.

Misschien focus ik op het fysieke aspect, omdat ik klimaatverandering als een fysiek probleem zie, als ik erover nadenk — ik associeer het onderwerp letterlijk met buiten in de natuur staan en het nieuwe geweld dat in die wereld voelbaar is en voortkomt uit de veranderingen van het klimaat. Ik denk aan hoe ik opnieuw leer koken zonder vlees of aan mijn poging om eten een nieuwe invulling te geven en zo te evolueren naar een afvalvrij leven. Ik denk dat klimaatverandering eerder iets is wat je moet doen en niet moet overdenken.

Ik kan niet al te lang stilstaan bij dit onderwerp zonder er existentieel een beetje onder door te gaan. Ik moet het onderwerp omzetten in actie, en die actie kan zich vertalen in koken, schoonmaken, en ‘s nachts in de badkamer rondsluipen om de chemische inhoud van alle haar- en make-upproducten van mijn dochter te bekijken.

Deze productie is ook een soort actie. En ik moet toegeven dat ik wel genoot van het moment toen ik opperde om niet te reizen. Dat als ik maar genoeg ‘niet reizen’ bleef zeggen er wel iets nieuws zou ontstaan. En hier zijn we dan, in gesprek over deze toerende niet-toerende productie.

Maar elke actie heeft tegelijk iets vergeefs en hoopvols, vind je niet? Vergeefs omdat het voor de wereldgemeenschap nu te laat is om drastische veranderingen door te voeren. Maar hoopvol omdat er misschien nog een ommekeer kan komen, op een manier die nog niet is bedacht.

Het is interessant, nietwaar, dat we verschillende leeftijden hebben en tot verschillende generaties behoren? Misschien voel ik me schuldig over de niet of te laat ondernomen actie met te weinig effect, de historische schuld waar mijn generatie onder gebukt zal gaan. Misschien is het anders voor jou, misschien heb jij hier een andere kijk op?

Beste Katie, Dank je voor je brief en om het stokje aan mij door te geven.

Zoals je terecht opmerkte, behoren wij tot verschillende generaties. Het is waarschijnlijk een algemene regel dat er spanningen bestaan tussen generaties onderling, maar in het licht van deze klimaatramp is die spanning heel specifiek en intens. Jij kijkt naar je kind en ziet in haar de toekomst maar je gelooft niet meer dat die toekomst de belofte inhoudt van een betere wereld. Ik kijk naar mijn ouders, wetende dat zij ook naar mij kijken, en ik zie in hen deze verbroken belofte, ik zie hoe hun erfenis mijn vloek is. Dat is geen kwestie van schuld maar een kwestie van perspectief.

Met veel van wat je in je tekst beschrijft, ben ik het eens. Dit klimaatprobleem is een fysiek en materieel probleem; op veel plaatsen leidt het nu al tot menselijke doden en maakt het er het leven onmogelijk. Maar, als inwoner van een Europese stad moet ik toegeven dat klimaatverandering nog steeds meer een mentale en emotionele kwestie is. Ik heb nog altijd het voorrecht dat ik de fysieke realiteit van klimaatverandering kan negeren. Ik merk wel dat jong zijn voor mij betekent dat ik niet meer mag dromen over oud worden, en dat mijn kinderwens iets is wat mij pijn doet. Klimaatverandering is voor mijn generatie fundamenteel emotioneel omdat het ons de toekomst ontzegt.

Als je het hebt over de fysieke actie die je onderneemt door afvalvrij te gaan leven of door vegetariër te worden, kan ik me niet ontdoen van het onmiskenbare cynische gevoel van generatie Z dat deze op individualisme en optimisme gebaseerde acties nooit genoeg zullen zijn. Dit geloof in kleine veranderingen op individueel vlak is een van de fundamentele fouten in de hele aanpak van jullie generatie. Maar ik weet ook dat je gelijk hebt, het is alleen actie die er ons voor kan behoeden dat we verdrinken, in eerste instantie in de ruimere theoretische vraagstukken en later in een almaar uitdijende zee.

Elke actie is een oproep tot nog meer actie, een oproep tot grote, massale verandering. Elke actie is een begin om de waanzin die ons hier heeft gebracht te stoppen en onderdelen van een nieuwe wereld te ontwerpen. De aanpak van deze gigantische crisis is niet alleen een fysiek probleem, maar ook een probleem van onze verbeelding. Het is moeilijk om je een klimaatneutrale wereld voor te stellen terwijl je in deze puinhoop leeft. Maar door te handelen, of het nu in de vorm is van doorgeefspelen of nieuwe vormen van koken, bouwen we een nieuwe wereld te midden van de overblijfselen van onze tijd. We maken ruimte om deze verbeelding te laten groeien, we belichamen het alternatief. Dit model van het niet toeren is een alternatief voor wat in de theaterwereld nauwelijks ter discussie staat. Het speelt met het idee van een verbonden wereld en laat ons zien hoe die er altijd anders zou kunnen uitzien.

Wanneer de belofte van een toekomst, van een betere wereld, is verbroken, hebben we alleen nog maar het nu. In de vluchtigheid van het heden, in de schaarste van het moment, kunnen we alleen maar handelen. Je hebt het stokje aan mij doorgegeven en nu is het mijn beurt om voor even leven te schenken aan dit stuk. Ik doe dit graag samen met het team van NTGent, samen met jou en al die anderen die deelnemen aan de estafetteloop, en ten slotte samen met het publiek, zodat in Miranda’s woorden ‘niemand van ons vanavond in ondraaglijke eenzaamheid hoeft te verkeren’.

en Dear Katie, What a pleasure meeting you in this 2D world of words called mail. It’s a strange reality, my words will travel lengths, but I won’t move a bit. The words of this play are also traveling, they have visited you in Lausanne and will now visit me in Ghent. I hope you left some traces behind, and I promise to do the same.

When I first read this play, I had to think about that time the arctic was on fire. Do you remember this? In September 2020 the continent of ice was literally burning. It felt like such a bad joke, ‘arctic fire’ reads more like an awful title for a science fiction comic or a high school punk band than as a news headline. But if you think about it, sentences like: ‘the north pole is melting’, ‘the Amazon Forest is disappearing’ or ‘the sea is getting empty of fish and full of plastics’ must have once sounded equally crazy. Teachers must have once used them to show their students examples of the absurd or of poetry. And then pupils laughed because absurdities are funny and because it’s nice to know that some things just can’t be. That fish can’t sing. But we get used to the strangest things, to traveling words, disappearing forests and ‘plastic soups’. We accept this ridiculousness as a new reality, we stop calling it insane and stop asking questions. And then we notice way too late that we can’t really breathe in this new strange reality, the same way a fish couldn’t sing in the last one. Turns out we’re the absurdity now, no longer matching with the reality we have accepted.

Climate change is weirdly poetic sometimes, for example when it snowed a lot in April, the year Prince — who has a song called Sometimes it snows in April — died. Or the way a polluted sky turns extra pink when the night falls. Climate change is scarier than the worst apocalypse movie, uncannier and more inconceivable than all the science fiction we know. It’s an impossible story to tell because even when we understand the facts, we can’t manage to believe them. So, what to do with climate change on a stage? What to do with a theatre on a burning planet?

I hope to hear from you soon and I’m sure I’ll run into you in the blank lines of the play.

Hi Martha It is a pleasure to meet you too in the ether and I’m so happy that you will be directing Miranda’s play at NTGent.

I feel as if everyone involved in this production is part of a relay race, passing the baton of the text and the subject from one director or theatre to another. You write about traces between the productions, and I see it more as a process connected with transmitting physical effort. The effort each director undergoes to make something material, the effort of the cyclists to pedal the power, the effort of the organisation to have to produce a different production in each venue.

Maybe I focus on the physical, because when I think about climate change, I think about it as a physical problem — I associate the subject literally with standing outside in the natural world and feeling the new violence in that world generated by the change in the climate. I think about the way I am re-learning how to cook without meat or the effort to re-imagine eating, so I can go to zero-waste. I think climate change is sort of something you need to do and not to think.

I can’t hold the subject in my imagination for too long without a sort of existential collapse. I must convert the subject into action, and that action can be cooking, cleaning, creeping around the bathroom at night looking at the chemical contents of all my daughter’s hair and make-up products.

This production is a sort of action too. And I must admit I did enjoy the moment when I suggested there should be No Travel. That if I just kept saying ’no travel’ enough, then something new would emerge. And here we are in conversation about this touring non-touring production.

But all action is sort of futile and hopeful at the same time, don’t you think? Futile because it’s too late now for the world community to make the drastic changes. Yet hopeful because there may be some way of turning it around which hasn’t been imagined yet.

It’s interesting, isn’t it, that we are different ages and belong to different generations? Maybe I feel the guilt of action not taken or taken too late and with too little impact, that guilt that will be the historical burden of my generation. Maybe it’s different for you, maybe you have a different view?

en Dear Katie, Thank you for your letter and for passing the baton to me.

As you rightfully observed, we belong to different generations. It’s probably a generic rule that generations have a tension between them, but in the face of this climate collapse that tension is a very specific and intense one. You look at your child and see in her the future, but you no longer believe that this future holds the promise of a better world. I look at my parents, knowing that they look at me as well, and see in them this broken promise, I see how their heritage is my curse. This is not a question of guilt, but it is a question of perspective.

I do share a lot of what you describe in your text. This climate problem is a physical and material one; in many places it already kills people and makes life impossible. But I must admit, being a citizen of a European city, climate change is still more of a mental and emotional issue. I still have the privilege of ignoring the physical reality of climate change.

I do notice that for me being young today means that I do not allow myself to dream about growing old, and that my desire to have children is something that hurts. Climate change is fundamentally emotional for my generation because it denies us the future.

When you talk about the physical action that you take by going zero waste or by becoming vegetarian, I can’t help but have this manifest cynical gen-z feeling that these actions grounded in individualism and optimism will never be enough.

Believing in these small individual changes is one of the fundamental faults in the whole approach of your generation. But I also know you are right, it’s only action that keeps us from drowning, first in the broader theoretical questions and later in an ever-rising sea. Every action is a call for more action, a call for big, massive change. Every action is the beginning of stopping the madness that brought us here and designing parts of a new world. Besides being a physical problem, dealing with this gigantic crisis is also a problem of our imagination. It’s hard to envision a climate-neutral world while living in this mess. But by acting, whether in the form of pass-through plays or new kinds of cooking, we are building a new world amid the ruins of our time. We make room for this imagination to grow, we embody the alternative. This model of not touring, is an alternative to what is hardly questionable in the world of theatre. It plays with the idea of a globally connected world and shows us how this world could always look different.

When the promise of a future, a better world is broken, all we have is the now. In the fleetingness of the present, in the scarcity of the moment, we can only act. You passed me the baton and it’s my turn to, for a moment, give life to this piece. I’m happy to do this together with the team of NTGent, with you and all the others who are in the relay race, and eventually with the audience, so that in Miranda’s words: ’none of us has to be unbearably lonely tonight.’

nl Komend seizoen mag NTGent een nieuwe theatermaker verwelkomen: de Zwitserse regisseur Thom Luz. Nadat hij internationaal furore maakte met voorstellingen als When I Die (2013) en Girl from the Fog Machine Factory (2018) — twee producties die ook in België te zien waren — begint hij binnenkort aan zijn debuut op Belgische bodem: Maison Maeterlinck / Theater Immobiel. en In the upcoming season, NTGent welcomes a new theatre maker: the Swiss director Thom Luz. After causing an international furore with plays such as When I Die (2013) and Girl from the Fog Machine Factory (2018) — two productions that toured the Belgian theatres as well — he will soon begin to work on his debut on Belgian soil: Maison Maeterlinck / Theater Immobiel.

nl ‘België leek mij altijd al een theaterparadijs’, antwoordt Thom Luz enthousiast op de vraag wat hem hier brengt. ‘Telkens wanneer we in Zwitserland de kans kregen om een voorstelling uit België te zien was dat fantastisch, wild en onverwachts. Onze Zwitserse breinen ontploften.’ Nu kan hij op uitnodiging van NTGent voor het eerst zelf een voorstelling maken in ons land.

Luz duikt meteen in de lokale theatergeschiedenis: zijn oog is gevallen op het oeuvre van Maurice Maeterlinck. Deze Gentse Nobelprijswinnaar voor de literatuur publiceerde heel wat theaterteksten en -theorieën die de Zwitser fascineren: ‘Maeterlinck was er bijvoorbeeld van overtuigd dat het theater volledig “stil” zou moeten zijn om de grootste emoties en waarheden uit te drukken.

Geen luide monologen of expressief acteerwerk dus, maar stilstand en stilte.

Dat was zijn théâtre immobile.’ Luz begrijpt Maeterlincks visie maar al te goed: ook zijn theaterpraktijk is er een van vertraging en verstilling. Dat wordt bij deze nieuwe voorstelling niet anders: ‘Het zal gaan over dingen die trager bewegen dan we gewend zijn. Denk aan een gletsjer: die beweegt uiteindelijk ook.’

De werktitel van Luz’ nieuwe voorstelling bij NTGent is Maison Maeterlinck / Theater Immobiel. In zijn lezing van Maeterlincks oeuvre spelen huizen namelijk een cruciale rol. Zo schreef hij een drama getiteld Interieur, over een gezin dat opgesloten zit in een huis en zich angstig verschuilt voor een onbenoemde dreiging die opdoemt uit de tuin. Zijn oeuvre lijkt zelf ook wat op een huis, vol deurtjes die nergens heen leiden en met trappen die eindeloos omhooggaan.

Daarom hebben we die bedacht, Maison Maeterlinck. Zo wordt het een immobiel theater én een immobiliëntheater.’

Luz vindt Maeterlincks oeuvre zo aantrekkelijk omdat het bulkt van de ‘onmogelijke claims’. Zo meende de Gentenaar dat het verboden zou moeten zijn voor een acteur om een rol op de scène te spelen. ‘Want van zodra een acteur Hamlet speelt, “vermoordt” hij de Hamlet die de lezer in zijn gedachten geconstrueerd heeft’, parafraseert Luz zijn inspiratiebron. ‘Eigenlijk zegt Maeterlinck dus dat er geen mensen op het podium mogen staan. Dat is alsof je wolken in de lucht zou verbieden. Het is onmogelijk, en ik ben benieuwd naar wat het zou kunnen betekenen. Want uiteindelijk stelt het de vraag naar ons menszijn. Als de hele wereld een schouwtoneel is en Maeterlinck zegt dat er geen mensen op de bühne mogen staan, wat doen wij dan op deze aarde?’

Voor deze productie zet Luz slechts één acteur in. Daartegenover staan wel vier muzikanten. Muzikaliteit is dan ook een van de rode draden in zijn oeuvre. Wanneer we naar de reden daarvoor vragen, beginnen de klokken van de Sint-Baafskathedraal te luiden. ‘Dat is nu precies wat ik bedoel’, zegt hij lachend. ‘Muziek komt vaak op momenten dat je niet weet wat te zeggen.

Waarom ze in al mijn producties zo’n belangrijke rol speelt, weet ik niet. Wat ik wel weet, is dat muziek ons helpt om gebieden te verkennen die we anders niet zouden kunnen verkennen.’

Maeterlinck was als symbolist evenzeer geïnteresseerd in die schijnbaar onverkenbare gebieden. ‘Zijn werk is bijna magisch’, zegt Luz. Dat is ook een omschrijving die bij zijn eigen praktijk past. De pers noemt hem al eens een ‘theatertovenaar’, een onofficiële titel waar hij wel om kan lachen: ‘Ik word liever een tovenaar genoemd dan een fraudeur. Magie draait om de onverwachte combinatie van symbolen. Ik vind het vooral interessant wanneer het theater via dat onverwachte iets kan veranderen in de manier waarop ik naar de wereld kijk. Er wordt tegenwoordig vaak gedebatteerd over wat theater is, kan of zou moeten zijn. Maeterlinck geeft ons een prachtig antwoord: hij herinnert ons eraan dat theater altijd nutteloos is en dat de waardevolste dingen in het leven de meest nutteloze zijn. Ik vind dat heel inspirerend.’ ●

en ‘Belgium always seemed to be a theatre paradise to me’, Thom Luz enthuses, when we ask what has brought him here. ‘Whenever we got the chance to see a play from Belgium in Switzerland, it would be something fantastic, wild and unexpected. Our Swiss brains used to explode.’ Now he has been invited by NTGent to make a play here himself for the first time.

Luz has dived straight into local theatre history, and Maurice Maeterlinck has caught his eye. This winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature from Ghent published many plays and theories about theatre that fascinate the Swiss director: ‘For example, Maeterlinck was convinced that theatre should be completely “silent” in order to express the greatest emotions and truths. No loud monologues or expressive acting, but stillness and silence. That was his théâtre immobile.’ Luz understands Maeterlinck’s vision better than anyone: his own theatre practice is also based on slowing down and falling silent. His new play will be no exception.

‘It will be about things that move more slowly than what we are used to. Like a glacier: ultimately it moves too.’

The working title of Luz’ new play at NTGent is Maison Maeterlinck / Theater Immobiel. In his reading of Maeterlinck’s oeuvre, houses play a crucial role. For example, he wrote a drama entitled Interieur, about a family locked in a house, fearfully hiding from an unnamed threat that looms in the garden. His oeuvre itself is like a house in a way, full of doors that lead nowhere and stairs that reach upwards forever. That’s why we came up with the title, Maison Maeterlinck.

It’s a pun on the Dutch word for immobility, ‘immobiel’, and real estate, ‘immobiliën’.

Luz is so attracted to Maeterlinck’s work because it is full of ‘impossible claims’.

For example, the Ghent playwright believed it should be forbidden for an actor to play a role on stage. ‘Because as soon as an actor plays Hamlet, he “murders” the Hamlet that the reader has constructed in their mind’, Luz explains, paraphrasing his source of inspiration. ‘So actually Maeterlinck is saying that nobody should be allowed to stand on stage. It’s like forbidding clouds to be in the sky. It’s impossible, and I’m curious about what it might mean. Because ultimately it asks a question about our humanity. If all the world is a stage and Maeterlinck says nobody is allowed to stand on it, what are we doing on this earth?’

Luz will only be using a single actor for this production. In contrast, there will be four musicians. Musicality is one of the ongoing themes of his theatrical oeuvre. When we ask why that is, the bells of St Bavo’s Cathedral start to ring.

‘That’s exactly what I mean’, he says, laughing. ‘Music often comes at times when you don’t know what to say. I don’t know why it plays such an important role in all my productions. What I do know is that music helps us to explore areas we would not be able to explore otherwise.’

As a symbolist, Maeterlinck was equally interested in these apparently unexplorable areas. ‘His work is almost magical,’ Luz says. That is also a description that fits his own practice. The press has been known to refer to him as a ‘theatre magician’, an unofficial title that makes him laugh. ‘I’d rather be called a magician than a fraud. Magic is all about the unexpected combination of symbols. The main thing that interests me is when theatre can change something about the way I look at the world by means of that unexpectedness. There are many debates today about what theatre is, can be or should be. Maeterlinck gives us a magnificent answer: he reminds us that theatre is always useless and that the most valuable things in life are the most useless. I find that very inspiring.’ ●

Plots kwam er ruimte vrij om na te denken over onze westerse levenswijze, die we zo lang als gewaarborgd zagen. Maar niets bleek minder waar. De verschillende crises, gaande van de gezondheidscrisis over de ecologische- tot de migratiecrisis, maakten duidelijk dat het koppig vasthouden aan onze levenswijze niets meer zou zijn dan een naïeve zelfmoordmissie.

Het waren onder andere ook de woorden van Angela Davis die in 2020 leidden tot de oprichting van School of Resistance, een symbolisch instituut dat artiesten, activisten, denkers en geëngageerde burgers samenbrengt om te brainstormen over een duurzame toekomst voor onze planeet en samenleving. Want als we niet langer terug kunnen naar het oude, hoe moet dat nieuwe normaal er dan uitzien? En welke rol kan theater daarin spelen?

Hoe kan theater een impact hebben als de problematieken die zich op globale schaal afspelen zo moeilijk te verbeteren lijken? Hoe kan theater bijdragen aan die prachtige en dringende transformatie van de wereld waar Angela Davis zo overtuigend naar verwijst?

Wij geloven dat theater één van de vele pistes is richting die transformatie.

Activisten, hulpverleners, burgers én theatermakers voeden elke dag opnieuw de voedingsbodem van waaruit verandering tot stand komt.

NTGent is ervan overtuigd dat theater meer moet zijn dan een platform voor toneelstukken. Theater is een agora, een plaats waar alle stemmen en alle verhalen van onze samenleving gehoord worden. Het is de blauwdruk voor een ideale maatschappij in wording.

Komend seizoen werken we net om die reden verder aan de Golden Books, een boekenreeks met programmateksten over theater, esthetiek en politiek.

Naast onze gebruikelijke samenwerking met de Duitse uitgever Verbrecher Verlag, beginnen we bovendien een nieuw traject, met de Belgische uitgever EPO. Ook de vraag Why Theatre?, waarmee we in 2020 meer dan honderd internationale kunstenaars bestookten, blijven we stellen, om zo onze eigen praktijk tegen het licht te blijven houden. Net zoals in het seizoen 21−22 blijven we ook het komende jaar in nauw contact met de theatermagazines Etcetera en Rekto:Verso, waarmee we dit najaar al opnieuw samenwerken in het kader van het Theaterfestival. Ook de mensen achter de Humanities Academie blijven we verwelkomen in onze zalen, net zoals onze vrienden van Oikos. En uiteraard houden we de deuren van onze School of Resistance wagenwijd open voor waardevolle gesprekken.

Daarnaast wordt seizoen 22−23 ook de start van een nieuw traject rond duurzaamheid. Samen met twaalf internationale partners wordt NTGent één van de drijvende krachten achter STAGES (Sustainable Theatre Alliance for a Green Environmental Shift): een vierjarig project waarin kunstenaars en wetenschappers wereldwijd worden uitgenodigd om alternatieven te formuleren voor een gezonde en groene theaterpraktijk. Dankzij de steun van Creative Europe wordt het project officieel gelanceerd tijdens Despair is Too Easy, een internationaal forum georganiseerd door NTGent en Théâtre de Liège in het najaar van 2022 (zie ook p. 23).

Waarom theater? Voor de Syrische theatermaker Mohammad Al Attar ligt een deel van het antwoord in de kracht die theater heeft als schepper van hoop.

In de Catalogue of Resistance, een magazine dat we publiceerden tijdens de tweedaagse School of Resistance rond regularisatie die in maart neerstreek in Gent, formuleerde hij zijn persoonlijk antwoord. Volgens Attar moeten we verzet tegen wanhoop als een politieke daad zien. Hij vraagt zich af of theater hier een rol in kan spelen. Hij moet bekennen dat hij dat antwoord niet weet.

Maar hij weet wel zeker dat het is wat we proberen. And we do it all the time. ● en “You have to act as if it were possible to radically transform the world. And you have to do it all the time.”

These are the words of professor, author and activist Angela Davis, who guided us through the worldwide standstill over the past couple of years caused by the pandemic. Suddenly there was space to think about our western lifestyle that we had taken for granted for so long. And it turned out to be an illusion. The various crises, ranging from the health crisis to the ecological and migration crises, have made it clear that hanging on stubbornly to our way of life would be nothing more than a naive suicide mission.

Angela Davis’ words were one of the things that lead to the founding of the School of Resistance in 2020, a symbolic institute that brings together artists, activists, thinkers and committed citizens to brainstorm on a sustainable future for our planet and society. Because if we can’t go back to the old way of doing things, what should the new normal look like? And what role can theatre play in it?

How can theatre have an impact if the issues playing out on a global scale seem so difficult to address? How can theatre contribute to this magnificent and urgent transformation of the world that Angela Davis evokes so convincingly?

We believe that theatre is one of the many routes towards this transformation.

Every day anew, activists, aid workers, citizens and theatre makers fertilise the soil from which change emerges.

NTGent is convinced that theatre must be more than a place where plays are staged. The theatre is an agora, a place where all the voices and stories in our society are heard. It is the blueprint for an emerging, ideal society.

This is precisely why we will be continuing to work on the Golden Books in the coming season: a series of publications containing programmatic texts about theatre, aesthetics and politics. Alongside our usual collaboration with the German publisher Verbrecher Verlag, we will also be starting a new partnership with the Belgian publisher EPO. We will also keep asking the question Why Theatre? which we put to more than a hundred international artists in 2020, in order to continue holding our own practice up to the light. Find our ever-growing online library via www.whytheatre.eu.

As we did in the 21−22 season, we will stay in close contact in the coming year with the theatre magazines Etcetera and Rekto:Verso, which we will be working with this autumn for the Theaterfestival. We will also continue to welcome the people behind the Humanities Academy to our auditoria, along with our friends from Oikos. And of course the doors of our School of Resistance will be flung wide open for valuable conversations.

Next to that, season 22−23 will also be the start of a new trajectory on sustainability. Together with twelve international partners, NTGent will be one of the driving forces behind STAGES (Sustainable Theatre Alliance for a Green Environmental Shift): a four-year project in which artists and scientists worldwide are invited to formulate alternatives for a healthy and green theatre practice.

Thanks to the support of Creative Europe, the project will be officially launched during Despair is Too Easy, an international forum organised by NTGent and Théâtre de Liège in autumn ’22 (see also p. 23).

Why theatre? For the Syrian theatre maker Mohammad Al Attar, the answer lies partly in the power theatre has to create hope. In the Catalogue of Resistance, a magazine that we published in March during the two-day School of Resistance in Ghent on the regularisation of undocumented people, he formulated a personal response. Attar believes that we must see resistance to despair as a political act. He asks whether theatre can play a role in this. He has to admit that he doesn’t know the answer. But he does know for certain that it is what we are trying to do. And we do it all the time. ●

A filmschool in Mosul

8 kortfilms met de steun van NTGent!

Samen met het Institute of Fine Arts in de Iraakse stad Mosul en UNESCO richtte NTGent het voorbije jaar een filmafdeling op. Twintig studenten werden opgeleid door een Iraaks-Belgisch team van filmdocenten, het gebruikte materiaal bleef ter plaatse. Het eindproduct: acht sterke kortfilms gemaakt door studenten, gedraaid in een verwoeste stad. Maar, de samenwerking loopt gewoon verder. We organiseren een filmfestival rond de kortfilms in Mosul en brengen de kortfilms naar verschillende festivals in Europa.

8 short films with the support of NTGent!

Together with the Institute of Fine Arts in the Iraqi city of Mosul and UNESCO, NTGent set up a film department last year. Twenty students were trained by an Iraqi-Belgian team of film teachers, the used material remained on site. The end product: eight strong short films made by students, shot in a destroyed city.

But the cooperation continues. We will organise a film festival with the short films in Mosul and bring them to different festivals in Europe.

Great Apes of the West Coast is het verhaal dat Princess Isatu Hassan Bangura altijd heeft vermeden te vertellen, tot op vandaag.

Vandaag zal ze echter in haar zoektocht naar het kunstenaarschap terugblikken op de plaats waar zij vandaan komt, Sierra Leone, op de jaren die zij doorbracht in die “volmaakt onvolmaakte wereld” en op haar reis naar Europa. Dit is een poging om niet zomaar een verhaal te vertellen, maar om samen met het publiek een kant van zichzelf te omarmen die ze altijd heeft afgestoten: een Zwarte Afrikaanse vrouw zijn. Deze poging om eindelijk haar diepe Afrikaanse wortels te vermengen met haar ervaringen in de westerse wereld, kan maar op één plaats gebeuren: het podium. nl

Great Apes of the West Coast is the story Princess Isatu Hassan Bangura has always avoided to tell, until now.

In her quest to be an artist, Bangura will look back at where she comes from, Sierra Leone, to the years spent in that “perfectly imperfect world.”

And to her journey to Europe, in an attempt not to simply tell a story, but to embrace together with the audience, a side of herself that she has been refusing: being a Black African woman.

This attempt of finally mixing her deep African roots with her experience in the Western world, can only happen in one place: on stage.

43 1 Lumley beach nl Mijn vaderland, Sierra Leone, kent prachtige witte zandstranden, zout water en tropische lucht. Zo nu en dan reden we langs de kust, maakten we een wandeling op het strand of gingen we zwemmen. Mijn favoriete strand was Lumley Beach. Mijn tante woonde daar vlakbij en als ik er op bezoek kwam, kleedde ze me op en liepen we naar het strand. Deze foto is genomen tijdens een van onze wandelingen. Ik zag een puntige rots en daar wou ik op klimmen. Ik kan me niet herinneren waar ik naar wees, maar ik weet zeker dat het naar iets moois was. en My country, Sierra Leone, is surrounded by beautiful white sandy beaches, salty waters, and tropical air. Every now and then, we would drive by the seaside, take a walk on the sand or go swimming. My favorite beach was Lumley beach.

My aunty lived close by, and when I went for a visit, she would dress me up and we would walk to the beach. This picture was taken during one of our walks. I saw a pointy rock and decided to jump on top of it. I can’t remember what I was pointing at, but I am sure it was beautiful.

2 De schoolvoorstelling / The pageant nl Als klein meisje was ik heel impulsief – eerlijk gezegd ben ik dat nog steeds.

Dit was op de dag van onze jaarlijkse schoolvoorstelling. Ik besloot twee dagen voor de voorstelling om mee te doen en vertelde het mijn vader en tantes pas de dag voordien. Het was een complete chaos. Mijn vader en tantes lieten alles vallen waar ze mee bezig waren, namen me mee naar de stad, kochten vier nieuwe outfits voor me, kookten een heleboel eten, verpakten het en legden het in de koelkast. Ze regelden een fotograaf om foto’s te maken voor en tijdens de voorstelling. Deze outfit droeg ik tijdens de voorstelling. De koelkast waar ik tegenaan leunde, was gevuld met al het heerlijke Afrikaanse eten dat mijn tantes hadden klaargemaakt en As a little girl, I was very impulsive. To be honest, I still am. This was the day of our annual pageant show in school. I decided to apply two days before the show and told my dad and aunties one day before the show. It was complete chaos. My dad and aunties dropped everything they were doing, took me into town, bought me four new outfits, cooked a lot of food, packaged it and put it into the fridge. They arranged a photographer to take pictures before and during the show. I wore this outfit to the pageant. The fridge that I was leaning on was stuffed with all the delicious African food my aunties prepared.

3 Trots / Proud nl Deze foto is genomen op de dag dat mijn vader aankwam uit zijn thuisstad Makeni. Hij bracht een nieuw salon naar ons huis in Freetown en richtte de woonkamer opnieuw in. Het was ook op deze dag dat we naar de St. Joseph Primary School in Freetown gingen en mijn rapport kregen. Mijn leraar vertelde mijn vader dat ik bij de beste drie leerlingen van mijn klas hoorde. Dat maakte mijn vader heel trots en hij liet een foto van ons maken in onze nieuw ingerichte woonkamer. en This picture was taken on the day my father arrived from his hometown Makeni. He brought some new armchairs to our home in Freetown and re-decorated the living room. It was also on this day that we went to the St. Joseph Primary School in Freetown and got my report card. My teacher told my father that I was one of the top three students in my class, he was a very proud and arranged for a picture to be taken of us in our newly decorated living room.

45 3 Afstudeerfeest / Graduation nl Ik studeerde af aan de St. Joseph Primary School en stond op het punt om aan een nieuw avontuur te beginnen op de St. Joseph Secondary School. Ik nodigde mijn hele klas en de buurt uit op mijn afstudeerfeest. Opnieuw bracht ik chaos en verwarring in het leven van mijn vader en mijn tantes. Op vier dagen tijd moesten ze een feest plannen voor bijna 40 gasten. De jurk die ik op deze foto draag, is voor mij gemaakt door mijn tante M’balu. Ze kleedde me van top tot teen, zodat ik me “vanbuiten net zo mooi zou voelen als ik vanbinnen ben”.

Ze gaven mij het beste afstudeerfeest dat ik me kon wensen. en I graduated from St. Joseph Primary School and was about to start a new adventure at St. Joseph Secondary School. I invited my whole class and the neighborhood to my graduation party. Yet again, I brought chaos and confusion into the life of my dad and my aunties. They had to plan a party for almost 40 people in four days. The dress I wore in this picture was created for me by my Aunty M’balu. She dressed me from head to toe, to make me feel “as beautiful on the outside as I am on the inside.” They created the best graduation party I could wish for.

Niet lang daarna verhuisden mijn vader en ik naar Nederland en I didn’t know this would be my last impulsive act, and my final celebration in Sierra Leone. Not long after, my dad and I moved to the Netherlands..

Uiteindelijk wordt Great Apes of the West Coast een voorstelling om terug te keren naar het punt van oorsprong. Een poging om, samen met het publiek, een ruimte te creëren voor inclusie.

nl Wat is de fijnste ontdekking die jullie al deden tijdens het werken met elkaar? lucie: “Vroeger – toen ik pas begon met acteren – dacht ik dat ik altijd degene zou zijn die dingen moest aannemen, van een regisseur bijvoorbeeld. Maar dat is niet zo bij Werktoneel. We werken met een regisseur maar het begint allemaal uit een gesprek, en daar zit een grote schoonheid in.” lucas: “Met elkaar praten. Dat is onze kracht, denk ik.” louise: “Er zijn tijdens een werkproces zot intieme momenten. Ik vind die magisch. Het gevoel dat je zó verbonden kan zijn met iemand… dat geeft je een bestaanszin. Een grote vreugde. Hoe jij kan connecteren met je spelers, Jesse, dat is je grote kracht als regisseur.” lucie: “Je zoekt ook telkens naar andere manieren van spelen. Je gaat voorbij het evidente, zodat er voor ons keer op keer nieuwe werelden opengaan.” jesse: “Voor mij is het belangrijk dat de voorstelling het resultaat is van de ontmoeting tussen wat ik heb voorbereid en wat dat met jullie verbeelding doet.

Wat heeft ervoor gezorgd dat jullie hier nu samen zitten als collectief? jesse: “Er is al van tijdens onze opleiding aan het KASK in Gent een wederzijdse aantrekking. Van alle mensen met wie ik al heb gewerkt, ken ik bijna niemand die zo ambitieus is. We willen allemaal ver gaan om iets uit te spitten. Ik hou er ook van om met dezelfde mensen te blijven werken. Het is een begrenzing maar dat is net verdiepend.” lucie: “Het is ook iets bodemloos, vind ik, tussen ons. We leren elkaar steeds beter kennen, maar ik heb niet het gevoeld dat het al op is. We blijven elkaar boeien.”

Wat voor vraag zouden jullie graag gesteld krijgen in een interview? joeri: “Ik zou in een interview iets moois over mijn familie willen vertellen. Over de woongemeenschap waar ik vandaan kom. Het is wellicht geen toeval dat ik als acteur in een collectief ben beland. Ik kan niet werken in mijn eentje. Dan begin ik snel aan mezelf te twijfelen en blijf ik geregeld liever in mijn bed liggen.

Soms denk ik dat ik pas besta ten opzichte van andere mensen.” jesse: “Ik herken dat.” louise: “Lucas, welke vraag zou jij graag krijgen in een interview?” lucas: “Het lijkt mij leuk als je eens de tijd krijgt om te mijmeren over hoe het allemaal gelopen is in je leven. En dat er dan iemand heel geïnteresseerd luistert en overal meer achter zoekt.” joeri: “Jij was toch een verdienstelijk pianist vooraleer je besloot om toneel te studeren? Hoe kwam dat dan?” lucas: “Exact dat soort vragen, Joeri! Het leek me vooral leuker om toneel te spelen dan piano.” lucie: “En is het ook zo?” lucas: “Jawel. Het is meer fun. Pianospelen is heel ernstig.” joeri: “Is iets doen omdat het fun is legitiem genoeg, vraag ik me dan af. Ik vind alleszins van wel.” ▶

Wat betekent vrijheid op het podium voor jullie? louise: “Ken je de allereerste pornofilm ooit?” joeri: “Deep Throat!” lucie: “Dat ging snel, Joeri.” louise: “In die film is er een moment waarop de hoofdrolspeelster klaarkomt. Dat je energie en je focus op anderen gericht is, en op de sfeer in de ruimte, in plaats van op jezelf. Dat je durft te vertrouwen op het materiaal.”

Hoe ziet jullie droomhuis eruit? jesse: “Ik woon nu met mijn lief op een plek die eigenlijk één grote kamer is, midden in de stad. Je hoort de hele tijd mensen ’s nachts. En taxi’s die voorbijrazen. Soms dromen we van een klein huisje, ver weg van alles. Weggevlucht.

Ik hoorde onlangs dat we nog zes, zeven jaar tijd hebben om ons energiegebruik radicaal om te gooien. Zo niet belanden we onherroepelijk in een wereld gedomineerd door extreem weer en natuurrampen.”

“Het idee dat de wereld naar de zak gaat, is voor mij nauw verwant met onze eigen sterfelijkheid. Al wil ik geen voorstellingen maken die alleen maar angstig zijn. Het moet ook grappig zijn. En moedig. Je kan angst en paniek ook op scène brengen met veel kracht, humor, en schoonheid.” lucie: “Wat is er dan nog belangrijk, vraag ik me af, als we in zo’n extreme situatie zijn beland?” joeri: “Ik zag onlangs een video van een oudere Oekraïense vrouw die sprak vanuit een schuilkelder. Ze zei heel kordaat: We komen er wel doorheen. Voor een pak mensen in grote delen van de wereld maakt het op dit moment geen reet uit dat ook die klimaatcrisis er nog aankomt. Omdat ze nu al zo erg in de shit zitten. Die chaos waar we nu zo voor vrezen, is er al veel langer. Alleen hebben wij dat in onze westerse bubbel nog niet door.”

Wat is Werktoneel?

Werktoneel is een collectief dat bestaat uit regisseur Jesse Vandamme en spelers Louise Bergez, Lucas Van der Vegt, Lucie Plasschaert en Joeri Happel. Na Solipsists (2022) creëert Werktoneel met Gruis/aan de twijfel (2023) de komende maanden een tweede productie bij NTGent.

Wat voor voorstelling denken jullie dat Gruis / aan de twijfel wordt? lucas: “Ik hoop vooral dat het een voorstelling in majeur wordt. Vrolijk, maar niet uitsluitend. Ook met een soort weemoed. Schubert bijvoorbeeld vond dat majeur nog verdrietiger was dan mineur. Het deed hem aan de dood denken.” joeri: “Virginia Woolf schreef een essay On being ill na de Spaanse griep. Ze schreef dat poëzie niet te inhoudelijk moest zijn maar wel snel moest binnenkomen. Als je ziek bent, dan wil je geen eindeloze uiteenzettingen. Je wil dat het to the point gaat en dat het je treft. Daar hebben we na corona grote nood aan.” ●

What is Werktoneel?

Werktoneel is a collective consisting of director Jesse Vandamme and actors Louise Bergez, Lucas Van der Vegt, Lucie Plasschaert and Joeri Happel. After Solipsists (2022), Werktoneel will create a second production at NTGent in the coming months with Gruis/aan de twijfel (2023).

What is the best discovery you have made while working together? lucie: “In the past — when I first started acting — I thought I would always be the one who had to accept things, from a director for example. But that’s not the case with Werktoneel. We do work with a director but it all starts with a conversation, and there is great beauty in that.” lucas: “Talking to each other. That is our strength, I think.” louise: “There are very intimate moments during a working process. I find those magical. The feeling that you can be so connected with someone... that gives you a sense of existence. A great joy. The way you connect with your actors, Jesse, that is your great strength as a director.” lucie: “You are also constantly looking for other ways of performing. You go beyond the obvious, so that new worlds open up for us time and time again.” jesse: “For me it is important that the performance is the result of the meeting between what I have prepared and what it does with the imagination of the actors. That’s how you get personality and necessity in the performance.”

What has made you sit here together as a collective? jesse: “There has been a mutual attraction since our training at the KASK in Ghent. Of all the people I have worked with, I hardly know anyone who is as ambitious. We all want to go the extra mile to figure something out. I also like working with the same people. It’s a limitation but that’s just deepening.” lucie: “It’s also something bottomless, I think, between us. We get to know each other better and better, but I don’t feel like we’ve run out of steam yet. We continue to fascinate each other.”

What does freedom on stage mean to you? louise: “Do you know the very first porn film ever?” joeri: “Deep Throat!” lucie: “That was fast, Joeri.” louise: “In that film, there is a moment when the leading lady climaxes. At that moment, bells are ringing and you hear waterfalls flowing, there are fireworks.

To me, that is playing freely. That you are at the same time a waterfall and fireworks and ringing bells.” lucie: “It has to do with letting go of your self-awareness. That all your sensors are fully open at the same time. That your energy and focus is on others and the atmosphere in the room, instead of on yourself. That you dare to trust in the material.”

Kay Sara, who should have celebrated the European premiere of Antigone in the Amazon at the Burgtheater Vienna, gave this speech online in the context of School of Resistance in May 2020, two months after the start of the Covid pandemic. The speech was translated since then in more than 10 languages and shared as text and video on the internet several hundred thousand times. Three years later she finally brings her Antigone to the stage of NTGent.

nl Deze toespraak begint met een reeks werkwoordsvormen in de voorwaardelijke wijs. Ik had vandaag op het podium van het Burgtheater moeten staan om de Wiener Festwochen te openen. Ik zou daarmee de eerste inheemse vrouw zijn geweest die een toespraak zou hebben gehouden in dit theater, dat het grootste en rijkste theater ter wereld zou zijn. Ik zou begonnen zijn met een citaat uit een Europese klassieker, Sophocles’ toneelstuk Antigone: “Vele dingen zijn monsterlijk, maar niets is monsterlijker dan de mensheid.”

Ik zou rechtstreeks naar jullie zijn gekomen van onze repetities in het Amazonegebied, waar we werkten aan een nieuwe Europees-Braziliaanse enscenering van Antigone. Ik zou daarin de rol gespeeld hebben van Antigone, die in opstand komt tegen koning Creon, die niet wil toestaan dat haar broer begraven wordt omdat hij als staatsvijand wordt beschouwd. Het koor zou bestaan hebben uit overlevenden van een door de Braziliaanse regering aangericht bloedbad onder landlozen. Het zou geen toneelstuk zijn geweest, maar een daad van verzet tegen de staatsmacht die de Amazone vernietigt.

Ik behoor tot de derde stam van de Tariana, tot de Stam van de Donder. Ik ben een dochter van de Dondergod, de dochter van een koning, net zoals Antigone.

Wij, de oorspronkelijke bewoners, worden indianen genoemd. Maar ik sta erop dat we inheemsen genoemd worden. Indiaan is een beledigend en pejoratief woord dat ons door de indringers is opgedrongen om uit te drukken dat we minderwaardig zijn. Dat wil ik dus veranderen. Ik ben acteur geworden om te kunnen praten over óns, over óns bestaan.

Ons verhaal is lang verteld geweest met de woorden van de niet-inheemsen. Nu is het tijd om ons eigen verhaal te vertellen. Onze rampspoed begon toen de Spanjaarden en Portugezen naar ons land kwamen. Eerst kwamen de soldaten, daarna de priesters. Samen met de Europeanen kwamen de ziektes. Duizenden stamleden stierven. En nog miljoenen meer door toedoen van soldaten en geestelijken. Ze moordden in de naam van één God en één beschaving, in de naam van vooruitgang en winst. Maar deze gebeurtenissen zijn in de vergetelheid geraakt en werden nergens opgetekend.

Sommigen verlieten het regenwoud om op het land te gaan werken. Maar zodra het werk gedaan was, werden ze gedood of tot slaaf gemaakt zodat ze niet hoefden uitbetaald te worden. En een paar weken geleden kwam opnieuw een ziekte vanuit de buitenwereld tot bij ons: covid. Misschien hebben jullie

61 vernomen dat in Manaus, de hoofdstad van de staat Amazonas, de ziekte heel hard toeslaat. Er is geen tijd voor fatsoenlijke begrafenissen. Mensen liggen in massagraven die met tractoren worden dichtgegooid. Anderen liggen op straat, onbegraven, zoals de broer van Antigone.

Witte mensen maken gebruik van de chaos om nog dieper in onze bossen door te dringen. De ontbossing is nog erger geworden. Branden worden niet meer geblust. Door wie? Wie in handen van de houthakkers valt, wordt vermoord.

En wat heeft Bolsonaro gedaan? Wat hij altijd doet: zijn aanhangers de handen schudden en de doden bespotten.

Ik weet dat jullie gewend zijn aan dit soort berichten. Als het te laat is, verschijnen er zieners. Wanneer Cassandra of Teiresias opduiken in de Griekse tragedies, weet je dat de ramp zich al voltrokken heeft. Het probleem is niet dat jullie niet weten dat onze bossen branden en onze mensen sterven. Het probleem is dat jullie gewend zijn geraakt aan deze feiten. Maar wij niet.

Ik zal jullie dus vertellen wat jullie al weten: een paar jaar geleden zijn de zijrivieren van de Amazone opgedroogd en dit voor het eerst sinds we weet hebben van hun bestaan. Als we nu niets doen, stort het ecosysteem van de Amazone binnen tien jaar in. Het hart van deze planeet zal stoppen met kloppen.

Dat is wat ónze wetenschappers zeggen, en dat is wat ook júllie wetenschappers zeggen. Als we niets doen sterven we uit. We kunnen niet zo egoïstisch zijn om de komende generatie het belangrijkste wat we hebben, de natuur, te ontzeggen.

We hebben de laatste weken veel pamfletten gekregen, ondertekend door beroemdheden. Jullie willen minder vliegen, minder stelen, minder doden. Maar hoe kunnen jullie geloven dat na 500 jaar kolonisatie, na duizenden jaren van onderwerping van de wereld, er een gedachte bij jullie kan opkomen die niet alleen meer vernietiging brengt? Als jullie naar jullie zelf luisteren, zullen jullie alleen jullie schuldige geweten vinden. En wanneer jullie de wereld rondreizen, zullen jullie alleen de rotzooi aantreffen waarmee jullie ons hebben besmet. Er is geen weg terug. Maar we mogen niet opgeven. En we mogen niet langer

toelaten dat het ons doodt en vernietigt. Ik ben niet bang voor mezelf, ik ben bang voor onze nakomelingen.

Nu is het tijd voor jullie om te zwijgen. De tijd is gekomen om te luisteren.

Jullie hebben ons, de gevangenen van jullie wereld, nodig om jullie zelf te begrijpen. Want het is zo simpel: er is geen winst in deze wereld, er is alleen leven.

En daarom is het goed dat ik niet op het podium van het Burgtheater sta. Dat ik niet tot jullie praat als acteur, want het gaat niet meer om kunst, het gaat niet meer om theater. Onze tragedie gebeurt hier en nu, in de wereld, voor onze ogen.

En misschien baart net dat me de meeste zorgen wanneer ik Creon hoor spreken: hij weet dat hij fout zit. Hij weet dat wat hij doet verkeerd is. Dat het in alle opzichten verkeerd is. Dat het zijn ondergang zal betekenen, de ondergang van zijn familie, de apocalyps. En toch doet hij het. Hij bekritiseert zichzelf, hij haat zichzelf, maar toch doet hij wat hij haat.

Deze waanzin moet ophouden. Wees niet zoals Creon. Laten we zijn zoals Antigone. Want als wetteloosheid wet wordt, wordt verzet plicht. Laten we ons samen verzetten, laten we menselijk zijn. Ieder op zijn eigen manier en plaats, verenigd door onze verschillen en onze liefde voor het leven dat ons allen verenigt. ●

en This speech begins in the conditional tense. I should have been on the Burgtheater stage today to open the Wiener Festwochen. I would have been the first Indigenous woman to give a speech in this theatre, which is said to be the largest and richest theatre in the world. I would have started with a quote from a European classic, Sophocles’ play Antigone: “Many things are monstrous, but nothing is more monstrous than mankind.”

I would have come to you directly from our rehearsals in the Amazon, for a new European-Brazilian staging of the play Antigone. I would have played the role of Antigone, who rebels against the ruler Creon, who does not want to allow her brother to be buried because he is considered an enemy of the State.

The choir would have consisted of survivors of a massacre of landless people caused by the Brazilian government. It would not have been a play, but an act of resistance: against that state power that is destroying the Amazon.

I belong to the third clan of the Tarian people, the Clan of Thunder. I’m a daughter of the Thunder God, the daughter of a king, like Antigone.

We Natives are called indians. But I insist that we are called Indigenous.

‘Indian’ is an offensive and pejorative word that was imposed on us by the invaders, to say that we are inferior. So, I want to change that. I became an actor so I could talk about us, about our existence.

Our story has long been told by the words of non-Indigenous. Now is the time to tell our own story. Our misfortune began when the Spanish and Portuguese came to our land. First came the soldiers, then the priests. Along with the Europeans came the diseases. Thousands of tribes died. Millions more died at the hands of soldiers and clergy. They murdered in the name of one god and one civilisation, in the name of progress and profit. But these events have fallen into oblivion and are not recorded anywhere.

Some left the woods to work in the fields. But at the end of the work they were killed or enslaved to avoid paying them. And a few weeks ago, the next illness came to us from abroad: Covid. You may have heard that in Manaus, the capital of the Amazon, the disease is particularly terrible. There is no time for proper funerals. People lie in mass graves filled up by tractors. Others lie in the streets, unburied like Antigone’s brother.

The white people use the chaos to penetrate even deeper into the forests.

The deforestation has become even worse. Fires are no longer extinguished.

By whom? Whoever falls into the hands of the loggers is murdered. And what has Bolsonaro done? What he always does: shaking hands with his supporters, mocking the dead.

I know you’re used to reports like this. When it’s too late, seers show up.

When Cassandra or Teiresias appear in the Greek tragedies, you know that the disaster has already taken its course. The problem is not that you don’t know that our forests are burning, and our people are dying. The problem is you’ve gotten used to these facts. But we haven’t.

So, I will tell you what you all already know: a few years ago, the tributaries of the Amazon dried up for the first time since we are aware that they exist. If we don’t act now, in ten years, the Amazon ecosystem will collapse. The heart of this planet will stop beating. That’s what our scientists say, and that’s what your scientists say too. We will disappear if we don’t act. We cannot be so selfish to deny the future generation the most important thing we have, nature.

We’ve gotten a lot of flyers signed by celebrities in the last few weeks. You want to fly less by plane, steal less, kill less. But how can you believe that after 500 years of colonisation, after thousands of years of subjugation of the world, a thought can come to you that will not only bring more destruction? If you listen to yourself, you will find only your guilty conscience. And when you travel the world, you will find only the dirt with which you have contaminated us. There is no turning back. But we can’t give up. And we can’t let it destroy us anymore.

I’m not afraid for myself, I’m afraid for our descendants.

Now it is time for you to be silent. The time has come to listen. You need us, the prisoners of your world, to understand yourselves. Because the thing is so simple: there is no gain in this world, there is only life. And that’s why it’s good that I’m not on the Burgtheater stage. That I’m not talking to you as an actor, because it’s not about art anymore, it’s not about theatre anymore. Our tragedy happens here and now, in the world, before our very eyes.

And maybe that’s what worries me most when I hear Creon speak: he knows he’s wrong. He knows what he’s doing is wrong. That it’s wrong in every way.

That it will bring his fall, the fall of his family, the apocalypse. And yet he does it.

He criticises himself; he hates himself, but he still does what he hates.

This madness must end. Stop being like Creon. Let’s be like Antigone.

Because when lawlessness becomes law, resistance becomes duty. Let’s resist together, let’s be human. Each in his own way and place, united by our differences and our love for the life that unites us all. ●

en We invest as much as possible in a qualitative engagement with the audience. We do this by offering introductions, open rehearsals, discussions, guided tours and workshops.

Since 2008, NTGent has organised Spiegelprojecten (Mirror projects) for (class)groups in the context of its own productions. Participants, under the guidance of a professional theatre coach, rework a performance and bring it to the stage of NTGent themselves. In 2021 we organised a real Spiegelfestival (Mirror festival): six schools, of which five from Ghent and one from the Netherlands, adapted Dissident by Lara Staal and made their own version of it. In January 2023 we will organise another Spiegelfestival (Mirror festival) and participants will ‘mirror’ the themes, content and texts of Dissident in a performance of their own.

Dit seizoen leggen curatoren Leni Van Goidsenhoven en Alexia Leysen de focus op inclusie en duurzaamheid. Ze verrijken zo ons programma en scherpen onze blik aan. nl

Starting this season, two curators will leave their fingerprints on our guest programme. We invite people who, based on their own expertise, choose performances around themes that we want to embed in our activities. This season, curators Leni Van Goidsenhoven and Alexia Leysen focus on inclusion and sustainability, enriching our programme and sharpening our vision.

nl Dat theater niets moet behalve boeien, daar heb ik eigenlijk altijd in geloofd.

En wat boeit op een scène, is hoogstpersoonlijk. Theater is sowieso waardevol wanneer het ons in aandacht samenbrengt, onze verwondering versterkt, ons opnieuw connecteert met onze speelsheid, ons doet lachen, ons perspectief verruimt, of ons het plezier schenkt om aan iemands lippen te hangen. Als het ons onszelf laat herkennen in andermans problemen en zo onze blik op onze medemens en onszelf verzacht. Wanneer het ons loutert. Die waarde heeft elke theaterliefhebber al ervaren. Toch kunnen we er in het licht van de ecologische realiteit niet omheen: de podiumsector moet, net als elke andere sector, in een stroomversnelling verder verduurzamen.

Ik geloof niet dat het ecologisch engagement van gezelschappen en makers per se in de inhoud van voorstellingen tot uiting moet komen. Maar wel in hun praktijk. Van belang is hoe ze concreet duurzamer proberen te werken en leven, en dat ze zich ook naast de scène uitspreken over deze zoektocht: bij de mensen die hen omringen, met de instanties waarmee ze werken, via de (sociale) media... Want vooral zo veroorzaak je verandering. Van enorm belang is natuurlijk ook hoe de omkaderende theaterhuizen, -organisaties en -festivals hun milieubelasting verkleinen.

In Engeland verplicht de Arts Council alle organisaties die ze ondersteunt jaarlijks hun voetafdruk bij te houden. Hoewel er al veel verduurzaamd is, bleek dat zo’n 700 organisaties drie jaar geleden samen nog een energieverbruik gelijk aan 122.000 huishoudens hadden, net als een afvalberg van 150.000 ton. Hun CO2-uitstoot was zo groot als wat 115.000 bomen in 100 jaar opnemen. Van ons landje heb ik deze cijfers niet. Maar iedereen beseft dat, ook ons Vlaams theaterlandschap nog een lange weg te gaan heeft naar klimaatneutraliteit.¹ Ecologische vooruitgang boeken is een complexe zaak. Zelf vind ik nog steeds houvast in wat ik leerde uit m’n zeven jaar campagneleiding van Dagen Zonder Vlees, de bewustwordingsactie rond de impact van dierlijke voeding op het milieu. Dat na die zeven jaar de vleesconsumptie in België opmerkelijk meer was gedaald dan in de andere Europese landen, zeg ik niet om ons team nog eens te feliciteren. Enkele principes daaruit kunnen ook in de theatersector helpen.

1) Zorg voor een collectieve bewustwording. Spreek je erover uit: online en live rond de tafel, met je collega’s en alle instanties waarmee je werkt. Een gesprek aan het begin van elke samenwerking kan al veel betekenen. Zo zal elke acteur, technieker, scenograaf, kostuumontwerper, communicatieverantwoordelijke, tourplanner, productiemedewerker, cateraar,... gemotiveerd zijn doorheen het hele proces te zien waar het groener kan.

2) Zoek de voordelen. Veel kunstenaars weten dat in de beperking de verrijking schuilt, dus zoek naar wat het je oplevert. Wanneer zorgt minder verspilling van materialen, energie, transport of opslagruimte, ook voor geldbesparing op korte of lange termijn? Wanneer zorgt een minimaler decor misschien voor een grotere vertelkracht? Wanneer leidt een plantaardige biologische keuken ook tot een vitalere ploeg? Wanneer leidt hergebruik van materialen tot creatievere ideeën? Voordelen zijn altijd te vinden, en zo blijft het enthousiasme levendig.

3) Het is een kwestie van en, en, en. Oplossingen moeten top-down en bottom-up komen, op kleine en grote schaal, op elk vlak van de productie. Alles telt. Verhuur of deelgebruik van materialen, niet meer vliegend touren, kraantjeswater, minder drukwerk, geen chemische producten meer. Op cultuurzaam.be vind je handige eco-checklists die veel aspecten bundelen voor producties en cultuurorganisaties.

Iedereen met wie ik heb gepraat wil een duurzamer gecoördineerde artistieke sector. Er is een grote vraag voor bibliotheken aan materialen en techniek, om maar iets te noemen. Wat nu nog pionierswerk is, kan later gewoon mainstream worden. Sowieso werkt niets zo aanstekelijk als positieve verandering. ●

69 en I have always believed that theatre should do nothing but captivate. And what captivates on stage is highly personal. In any case, theatre is valuable when it brings us together in focus, enhances our sense of wonder, reconnects us with our playfulness, makes us laugh, broadens our perspective, or gives us the pleasure of hanging on someone’s lips. When it makes us recognise ourselves in other people’s problems and soften our view of our fellow human being and of ourselves. When it purifies us. Every theatre lover has already experienced this value. Yet, in the light of ecological realities, we cannot ignore it: the performing arts sector, just like any other sector, must accelerate its sustainability.

I do not believe that the ecological commitment of companies and producers must necessarily be expressed in the content of their performances. But it must speak from their practice. What is important is how they concretely try to work and live more sustainably and also speak out about this quest offstage: to the people around them, with the institutions they work with, through the (social) media... Because that is how you cause change. Of course, how the theatres, organisations and festivals that surround them reduce their environmental impact is also of enormous importance.

In England, the Arts Council requires all the organisations it supports to keep an annual record of their footprint. Although much has already been made sustainable, it turned out that three years ago, some 700 organisations together had an energy consumption equivalent to 122,000 households, a waste pile of 150,000 tonnes and a CO2 emission as large as 115,000 trees would absorb in 100 years. I do not have these figures for our little country. But everyone realises that, although a lot has already been made sustainable in recent years, our Flemish theatre landscape still has a long way to go to achieve climate neutrality.² Making ecological progress is a complex matter. I still find something to hold on to in what I learned during my seven years as campaign leader for Dagen Zonder Vlees (Days Without Meat), the awareness campaign about the impact of animal based food on the environment. The fact that after those seven years, meat consumption in Belgium had dropped remarkably more than in other European countries is not something I say just to congratulate our team. A few principles from this campaign experience can also help in the theatre sector.

1) Create collective awareness. Speak out: online and live around the table, with your colleagues and all the organisations you work with. A conversation at the beginning of each cooperation can already mean a lot. Every actor, technician, scenographer, costume designer, communications manager, tour planner, production staff member, caterer, etc. will be motivated to go through the entire process to see where things can be done in a greener way throughout the whole process.

2) Look for the advantages. Many artists know that in the limitation lies the enrichment, so look for what it also offers you. When will less waste of materials, energy, transport, storage space, also save money in the short or long term?

When does a more minimalist decor perhaps provide greater narrative power?

When does a vegetable-based organic kitchen also lead to a more vital team?

When does reusing materials lead to more creative ideas? Benefits can always be found, and so the enthusiasm remains alive.

3) It is a matter of and, and, and. Solutions must come top-down and bottom-up, on a small and large scale, at every level of production. Everything counts. Rental or shared use of materials, no more flying tours, tap water, less printing, no more chemical products. On cultuurzaam.be you can find handy eco-checklists for productions and cultural organisations that bundle many aspects.

Everyone I talked to wants a more sustainably coordinated artistic sector. There is a great demand for libraries of materials and technology, to name but a few.

But what is pioneering now may become mainstream later. In any case, nothing is as contagious as positive change. ●

nl Leni Van Goidsenhoven is als postdoctoraal onderzoeker verbonden aan de Universiteit Antwerpen (Wijsbegeerte) en de KU Leuven (Culturele Studies). 70 Leni Van Goidsenhoven nl Handicap, psychische kwetsbaarheid, en ziekte in relatie tot literatuur en kunst is wat me altijd heeft geboeid. De laatste negen jaar ben ik dan ook voornamelijk bezig geweest met thema’s als neurodiversiteit, inclusieve leeromgevingen, representaties van niet-normatieve lichamen en zintuigen in kunst, literatuur en media. Aan de universiteit doceer ik over deze thema’s binnen zowel de literatuurwetenschappen als de filosofie en de bio-ethiek.

Het studiedomein waarin ik me als academicus voornamelijk in beweeg heet ‘disability studies’. Dat is een discipline die werkt met ervaringsverhalen en van daaruit aan theorievorming doet. Het gaat vaak om het in vraag stellen van individualistische benaderingen van handicap of psychische kwetsbaarheid, benaderingen die vooral nadruk leggen op het tekort. In mijn eigen werk begrijp ik handicap bijvoorbeeld veeleer als een relationeel fenomeen en als een bron van mogelijkheden en kennis, wat ons op heel andere plekken brengt.

Algemeen vind ik het belangrijk om niet louter te focussen op hoe we de samenleving inclusiever kunnen maken door steeds meer in te zetten op uitzonderingsmaatregelen die toegankelijkheid verhogen (denk aan rolstoelrampen en minder trappen, braille en auditieve equivalenten van geschreven taal, stille ruimtes enzovoort). Dat is uiteraard allemaal noodzakelijk en welkom, maar ik wil er toch vooral op aandringen om handicap collectief anders te verbeelden.

Handicap is niet iets dat gewoon getolereerd moet worden naast de norm van een zogenaamd valide lichaam. Verschil zou als iets natuurlijk moeten worden begrepen. Waar ik dus op inzet is het anders denken over diversiteit van lichamen, zintuigen en denkstijlen. Het gaat erover ons collectief voorstellingsvermogen op te rekken door op zoek te gaan naar de wenselijkheid van verschil.

Kunst — waarin gretig geëxperimenteerd kan worden met mogelijke werelden en perspectieven — is daarbij onontbeerlijk.

De opdracht van NTGent om enkele voorstellingen te programmeren in relatie tot handicap in de breedste zin van het woord, deed me nadenken over wat in het hier en nu van het Vlaamse podiumkunstenlandschap het meest urgent is. Leg ik me toe op de complexiteit van het thema? Of kijk ik vooral naar toegankelijkheidskwesties voor het publiek, voor medewerkers in de sector, voor kunstenaars? Kan ik bijvoorbeeld een voorstelling programmeren die niet over handicap gaat en vervolgens alles rond publiekstoegankelijkheid – waar NTGent al hard op inzet – verder verdiepen? Kies ik voor een voorstelling die handicap als lens of blik binnen het maakproces gebruikt? Zet ik in op representatie en aanwezigheid op scène van diverse lichamen zodat er meer kansen komen voor kunstenaars en het publiek anders leert kijken? Hoe een kunstenaar met een beperking programmeren onder het kopje diversiteit als die kunstenaar zo niet geprogrammeerd en gekaderd wil worden? Hoe stap je zelf niet in een belerende en moraliserende rol?

Ik besloot om de breedheid en complexiteit van het thema niet gewoon ten volle naar voren te schuiven in het nadenken over programmatie, omdat dat al snel een zoveelste theoretisch debat zou openen en ik toch vooral verschil wil zien, actie wil voelen. Mijn opdracht begreep ik daarom als een soort inleiding of aanzet op wat kan. Want dit zal nooit af zijn. In mijn ideale scenario gaat NTGent langere tijd aan de slag met dit thema en/of de kunstenaars die ik naar voren schuif, ook met diegenen die uiteindelijk niet geprogrammeerd werden.

Het ideale plaatje had ik vrij snel in mijn hoofd. Ik wilde totaal verschillende voorstellingen: één waarbij een kunstenaar met een beperking heel expliciet werkt rond het thema handicap, een andere waarbij participatie van publiek een rol speelt en ten slotte een voorstelling die thematisch helemaal niet gaat over handicap, maar waarbij het thema gewoon aanwezig is zonder meer en waarbij de esthetiek een heel breed publiek aanspreekt. Het liefste wilde ik een mix van fysieke en minder zichtbare beperkingen, net als kunstenaars van kleur en alle leeftijden.

Om dit ideale plaatje rond te krijgen, moest ik opvallend genoeg vooral over de landgrenzen heen kijken. Ik kwam al snel uit bij makers als Michael Turinsky, Chiara Bersani, Doris Uhlich, Danskompaniet Spinn, Athina Lange, enzovoort.

Dit hoeft niet te verbazen, want ook de meest recente rapporten over handicap in de kunsten laten zien dat Vlaanderen niet zo hoog scoort op vlak van inclu▶

71 sie. Om budgettaire redenen was het niet mogelijk om zoveel buitenlandse voorstellingen te kiezen — al die vluchten die het met zich zou meebrengen zouden bovendien ook ingaan tegen Alexia Leysens thema duurzaamheid. En dat wil ik niet. Moeilijk evenwicht zoeken dus. Niettemin gaf het ideale plaatje dat ik had opgesteld mij richting en perspectief. Het thema om te programmeren naar diverse lichamen is experimenteel en kan veel kanten uit. Voor mij was het alvast een boeiende zoektocht waarin ik ontdekte dat ik niet zomaar activistisch wilde zijn, maar vooral nuance, context en openheid wilde bieden in hoe ik voorstellingen koos. Openstaan voor andere manieren van zijn, zonder iets te willen oplossen of fixen, blijft voor mij de basis.

Leni Van Goidsenhoven en Disability, psychological vulnerability and illness in relation to literature and art is something that has always fascinated me. For the last nine years, I have been working on themes such as neurodiversity, inclusive learning environments, representations of non-normative bodies and senses in art, literature and media. At the university, I teach on these themes within both literature studies, philosophy and bioethics.

The field of study in which I mainly operate as an academic is called Disability Studies. Disability Studies is a discipline that works with stories of experience and uses them as a basis for theory. It is often about questioning individualistic approaches to disability or psychological vulnerability, approaches that emphasise the deficiency. In my own work, for example, I understand disability more as a relational phenomenon and as a source of possibilities and knowledge, which takes us to very different places.

In general, I think it is important not to focus only on how to make society more inclusive by focusing more and more on exceptional measures that increase accessibility (think wheelchair ramps and fewer stairs, braille and auditory equivalents of written language, quiet spaces, etc.). This is all necessary and welcome, of course, but I would also urge that disability be collectively portrayed differently. Disability is not something that should simply be tolerated alongside the norm of a supposedly able-bodied body. Difference should be understood as something natural. So what I am focusing on is thinking differently about diversity of bodies, senses and thinking styles. It is about stretching our collective imagination by looking for the desirability of difference. Art — in which one can eagerly experiment with possible worlds and perspectives — is indispensable here.

NTGent’s commission to programme three performances in relation to disability in the broadest sense of the word made me think about what is most urgent in the here and now of the Flemish performing arts landscape. Do I focus on the complexity of the theme? Or do I mainly look at accessibility issues for the audience, for employees in the sector, for artists? Can I, for example, programme a performance that is not about disability and then go deeper into the issue of accessibility, which NTGent is already working on? Do I opt for a performance that uses disability as a lens or a viewpoint within the creative process? Do I focus on the representation and presence on stage of diverse bodies so that there are more opportunities for artists and viewing frames that can be developed among the audience? How do I programme an artist with a disability under the heading of diversity if that is not how the artist wants to be programmed and framed? How do you not step into a pedantic and moralising role?

I decided not to fully explore the broadness and complexity of the theme when thinking about programming, because that would quickly open up yet another theoretical debate and I mainly want to see difference, feel action.

Therefore, I understood my assignment as a kind of introduction or impetus to what can be done. Because this will never be finished. In my ideal scenario, NTGent would continue to work on this theme and/or the artists I put forward for a longer period of time, including those who were not part of the programme in the end.

I soon had the ideal picture in my head. I wanted three completely different performances: one in which an artist with a disability works very explicitly on the theme of disability in the performance, another in which audience participation plays a role, and a third performance that is not thematically about disability at all, but in which it is simply present and in which the aesthetic appeals to a very wide audience. Ideally, it would also be a mix of physical and less visible disabilities, artists of colour and all ages.

To complete this ideal picture, I remarkably enough had to look beyond the national borders. I quickly found creators such as Michael Turinsky, Chiara Bersani, Doris Uhlich, Danskompaniet Spinn, Athina Lange, and so on. This should not come as a surprise, since the most recent reports on disability in the arts show that Flanders does not score very highly in terms of inclusion. For budgetary reasons, it is not possible to choose so many foreign performances — all the flights it would entail would also run counter to Alexia Leysen’s theme of sustainability. And I don’t want that. It’s a difficult balance to strike. Nevertheless, the ideal picture I had drawn up gave me direction and perspective. The theme of programming to various bodies is experimental and can go in many directions. For me, it was in any case a fascinating quest in which I discovered that I did not just want to be activist, but above all wanted to offer nuance, context and openness in how I chose performances. Being open to other ways of being, without wanting to solve or fix anything, remains the basis for me. ●

Toegankelijkheid / Accessibility nl NTGent is toegankelijk voor rolstoelgebruikers. In de Schouwburg, Minnemeers en Arca kunnen slechthorenden gebruik maken van FM-ringleiding.

Onze eigen voorstellingen worden steeds voorzien van boventiteling, en je kan gebruik maken van een theatertablet met audiodescriptie, tolken Vlaamse Gebarentaal en boventiteling in allerlei talen (zie p. 65). en NTGent is accessible for wheelchair users. In the Schouwburg, Minnemeers and Arca the hard of hearing can make use of the FM hearing loop. Our own performances are always provided with surtitles, and you can use a theatre tablet with audio description, Flemish Sign Language interpreters and surtitles in various languages (see p. 65).

Eten & Drinken / Food & Drinks nl Het NTGent Café aan onze Schouwburg is elke dag open van 10.00 ‘s ochtends tot minstens 21.00 ‘s avonds. Je kan hier terecht voor een lekkere croque of een (veggie) spaghetti. In Arca en Minnemeers kan je tot ongeveer een uur na de voorstelling nog iets drinken in de bar. en The NTGent Café in our Schouwburg is open every day from 10:00 in the morning until at least 21:00 in the evening. You can order a tasty croque or a (veggie) spaghetti. In Arca and Minnemeers you can have a drink in the bar until about an hour after the performance.
