Are you torn between settling down to build your career and embarking on an exciting travel adventure?
Want to do impactful, Kingdom work and embark on the adventure of a lifetime? As a teacher at Northern Territory Christian Schools, you can do both!
Whether you are a young teacher just starting out, or an experienced educator looking to make a real impact, Northern Territory Christian Schools can provide an opportunity to expand your horizons, professionally and personally.
Working at schools across the Territory - some close to Darwin and others more remote - you can be the Lord’s hands and feet as you educate, care for and train students in the Northern Territory.
With seven schools set on six stunning campuses across the Territory, NT Christian Schools staff and teachers are perfectly positioned to explore the beauty of Australia’s tropical top end and rugged ranges in the Red Centre. From remote swimming holes to famed fishing spots to luscious picnic places for drinking in the sunset, an array of breathtaking landscapes, recreational experiences, and cultural delights await.
The Northern Territory has the highest proportion of Indigenous residents among its population. Living and working in the Territory offers education professionals
a valuable opportunity to grow and expand one’s understanding of Australia’s First Nations peoples –the oldest continuous culture on earth.
The amazing Top End and Red Centre boasts lifestyle advantages as well as a rich history, from the Bombing of Darwin that was the biggest air raid of WWII, tropical Cyclone Tracy that devastated the city in 1974 to the Arrernte Aboriginal people’s Caterpillar creation story.
Positioned at the gateway to Asia, Territorians are just a short flight away from a weekend retreat in Indonesia or Singapore.
The wonders of the Territory overflow into school life at NT Christian Schools – and not just because school camps and excursions are next level when the NT’s your playground!
In the classroom, students from diverse families are valued as individuals made in the image of God – each with a unique purpose and pathway. Teachers are affirmed as educators and mentors, not mere boxtickers and report-writers. Colleagues and parents become friends and members of the local community. Work takes on a new meaning as God is revealed in everyday tasks.
I started as a teacher here in the Northern Territory, and it was an awesome introduction to aspects of Australia – the people from international backgrounds, First Nations people – in a place where there are incredible professional development opportunities, including coaching and mentoring. There’s so much opportunity in the Territory.”
“ So much opportunity.
NT Christian Schools offers teachers six weeks of annual leave, providing the time needed to travel and see family in other states on special occasions. And, after just five years of service (as opposed to the usual ten), NT Christian Schools staff are given long service leave and 15 days per year of personal and carers leave.
NT Christian Schools also offers generous financial assistance for staff who pursue further study to develop their skills and expertise. There is a lot of emphasis to the learning and professional development of staff at NT Christian Schools with a strong commitment to be lifelong learners focusing on developing a strong foundation in order to cultivate growth, both personally and in the environment for student learning.
There are opportunities for staff to learn through the National Institute of Christian Education which is funded by NT Christian Schools. For example, teachers can do their masters and have that paid for as they are doing their work.
Professional development support by NT Christian Schools begins with encouraging staff as they arrive and supporting them during their move to the Territory to join the team. Upon arrival, new staff undertake an induction designed to give them a deep sense of belonging in the NT Christian Schools community. Once settled, line managers and colleagues work with each individual to chart a personal pathway to develop and meet their goals. After 13 years on staff with NT Christian Schools, Ms van Bentum says the benefits of working at NT Christian Schools extend well beyond excellent salary packages and professional development
opportunities. The real benefits are the intangible ones found in the nurturing NT Christian Schools community.
“I consistently see line managers and colleagues who really care about the experiences our staff are going through. We all know what it’s like to be in times of transition when it comes to change. We know that, at those times, we need to be looking after family, too.
We are an employer that understands each of our employees is more than just somebody who comes to work and leaves again. They each have a deep story we need to engage with.”
NT Christian Schools wants to see their teachers and staff flourish in the gifts and talents God has given them. NT Christian Schools strives to create an environment where staff are supported, resourced, challenged and encouraged to pursue everything God has for them.

period as Acting Principal. I think Nhulunbuy is a great opportunity to really grow and develop in a whole lot of areas and probably provides you with opportunities you wouldn’t get in some other states.” – Andy

“Araluen Christian College is a tight knit staff and parent community, were I have felt both genuinely cared for through the prayers of others and thoughtful acts of kindness. It has also given me a space to live out my Christian life by caring for others in our community. Our students are friendly and accepting and I love walking around the College having students call out hello or run up and want to chat.”“Opportunities to develop professionally through colleagues and formal PD as a classroom teacher, Special Education teacher, a developing leader and principal have been many in my 13 years at the College, both from within NT Christian Schools and in the wider education sector in Alice Springs. Opportunities are many within the College if you
are willing to step out and give things a go.” -
Rosie Lindsey, Learning Inclusion Coordinator, Araluen Christian College“The Sattler staff team is amazing in the Territory. A lot of them come from down south or have done a big move like we did. Being such a small community and network of schools, and a part of that teaching team, there’s strong collegiality. We know each other’s families, do barbecues on the weekend. That builds a lot of trust and genuine friendship which helps when you’re working through interruptions like COVID. Knowing the heart of your fellow teachers has really helped see us through a challenging time.” – Bronwyn Fahey, Teaching and Learning Support Coordinator, Sattler Christian College.
“Something that I love about Nhulunbuy Christian college is the staff culture. I’ve made some friends up here that will be lifelong. It’s just like family in this school and that’s not something that I’ve experienced everywhere I’ve gone, so I’ve loved it. The staff come to work happy. People are stoked to be here. There’s a good vibe. We band together and plan together. Even
when you’re doing something by yourself, you have an array of staff around who are willing to jump on board and help. And the staff love to hang out on a Friday afternoon and do things together on the weekends. There’s that feeling of living together and working together. You really get to know people deeply.” –Anna Lansdown, Teacher, Nhulunbuy Christian College.
“Here at Marrara we’re about crafted teaching. For us, all learning is formational. Formational learning is about helping students learn with their head, connect that knowledge to their heart, and see it outworked through their hands in their daily lives. We have a fantastic and committed staff here who are driven to support our students and care for them along their learning journeys so that they can be who God has created them to.” – Joel
NT Christian Schools has been a member of the Christian Education National family of schools in Australia from its inception. Christian Education National is the peak body for over 80 schools in Australia, all of whom share a commitment to education from a uniquely Christian perspective and whose governance structures rely on the strong support and involvement of Christian parents and community members. They support their member schools through communication, representation, conferences and sharing of ideas.
NT Christian Schools believes Christian schools are only as strong and effective as their staff. That is why we use and support the National Institute for Christian Education. Teacher education, both professional
development and post-graduate study from a Christian perspective, is essential to maintain and grow the school’s unique perspective of education. NT Christian Schools has a close relationship with the National Institute and regularly supports staff members to engage in courses of study through the Institute.
NT Christian Schools is also a member of the Australian Association of Christian Schools, whose mission is to assist Christian schools in Australia, advocating for them and protecting their interests at a national level.
An important aspect of the NT Christian Schools Christian approach to education is found in its

commitment to uncovering the unique pathway of every individual in the school community. NT Christian Schools strives to assist students in finding a pathway that allows them to learn who they are as humans created in the image of God, gifted in different capacities, to bring that into the world. This involves supporting students to make a full exploration of their unique selves and equipping and empowering them to transition from one stage of life to the next.
“In Christian education, there is a sense of God’s desire and work in changing hearts. Often that happens through really digging deep into the concepts we find in God’s word and unpacking them. But it’s also about our staff and teachers being people who have deep faith and can express that in conversation. I really think that God desires for all humanity to come to him and have a relationship with Him. And that’s
NT Christian Schools, therefore provides education, training and care that extends from Early Childhood Education to primary and high school to accredited vocational education training and non-accredited training designed to strengthen families and local communities.
also the deep desire of our school – for children to hear His word, hear His call in their lives, and to be people who not only have had their lives changed, but who will go and change the lives of others in the future.”
Madia Schatz, Middle School teacher, Sattler Christian CollegeThe Northern Territory is often described as a “melting pot”, with a vibrant community of different people groups, cultures, industries and outlooks. In the same way, the NT Christian Schools community is a beautiful mix of personalities and people. Each of its six schools has a distinct culture or personality and standout strengths, and students and staff alike are encouraged to find the place where they fit best.
Marrara Christian College has provided high-quality Christian education to the families of Darwin and beyond for over 40 years. Marrara provides Christian education, training and care for students from ELC to Year 12 –partnering with parents to support students to ‘live in truth and grow in wisdom’.
Located in the northern suburbs of Darwin and easily accessible by public and private transport, the College is set on 18 hectares of tropical bushland and garden. The school has a track record of delivering creative and innovative education and is especially known for its Family Group Home program, trade training, and senior education pathways (provided through NT Christian College).
Marrara is capably led by Principal Joel van Bentum. Joel has been part of the Marrara community for 10 years, having worked as PE Coordinator, Head of School, Principal of NT Christian Schools Registered Training Organisation and Principal of NT Christian College. Originally from Western Sydney, Joel understands the challenges of making a “big move” to the territory and can personally attest to the benefits of being part of the NT Christian Schools community both professionally and personally. He is passionate about formational learning, and the school utilises an inquiry-based framework to do this.
“I am deeply passionate about Christian Education and desire to continue to develop a school that acknowledges every student as being made in the image of God and being loved by Him. In this way, every student brings a range of gifts and abilities that as a school we will seek to stretch and develop so they can engage wisely and fully in our rapidly changing world,” Joel says.
Joel describes his staff team as “a fantastic and deeply committed staff who seek to walk alongside students on their learning journeys, who deeply care, and drive our students to find their path and step into their future”.

Palmerston Christian College (PCC) is situated on three hectares of both natural and landscaped gardens in the suburb of Marlow Lagoon – only five minutes’ drive from the heart of Palmerston. Palmerston has been one of Australia’s fastest growing cities and the Northern Territory’s second largest city. It is located approximately 20 kms southeast of Darwin. PCC educates Transition to Year 12 students, with 3–4-year-old children also catered for through our Kingdom Kid’s Early Learning Centre. Students can enjoy their educational journey throughout the entirety of their school years on the same campus providing consistency and stability in an ever-changing world.
Luke Willsmore has recently relocated from Canberra with his family and is delighted to be joining the college community as Principal. Luke is passionate about building pathways for children to engage in fun, exciting learning in a safe, caring environment. Luke enjoys the great outdoors and was thrilled at the opportunity to join Palmerston Christian College where well-established annual camps are an amazing focal point. These include the Year 9 Larapinta Trek, Year 10 interstate trip as well as Primary and Middle School camps exploring internationally renowned tourist attractions of Kakadu, Katherine and the
Litchfield Region. “What a wonderful opportunity to explore our own backyard and delight in God’s wonderful creation!” Luke remarks.

Set in a semi-rural community on the outskirts of Darwin, Sattler Christian College is a special community that includes an early learning centre, primary and middle school. The local population’s love for the great outdoors overflows into the school, as students enjoy the school’s magnificent bushland setting.
Sattler is a welcoming and thriving community with a dedicated staff and parent body – which has seen our enrolments soar in the past few years.
A mix of best practice evidence-based teaching approaches see Sattler’s NAPLAN results averaging 30% higher than other NT schools.
“Our key reading strategies use synthetic phonics and decodable readers. We’ve known for years that this approach works – and were pleased to see the official Australian Curriculum follow in our footsteps,” says Principal Michael Tooler.
Sattler values rich outdoor experiences, enjoying school camping experiences and a conservation partnership with the Territory Wildlife Park. We also love to provide inclusive educational experiences for students and staff.
“How we do things is as important as what we do,” says Michael. Manners Before Matters communication protocol puts a high priority on facilitating genuine, open listening interactions that bear fruit.
“When combined with classroom management techniques, staff are supported to create a learning environment in which students can learn without distraction. And parents know their students are safe.”
Chapel services, assemblies and daily pastoral care group lessons are part of our school’s pastoral care programs.
“Our deep hope is that we continue to see lives changed at Sattler Christian College that causes generational blessings on our current and future families as we together seek to change lives in all that we do, at all times, for the glory of Jesus Christ.”
We’re totally bucking the trend up here. The suburb we’re situated in was hit hard financially during COVID, but in that time, the school almost doubled. It’s just a miracle
we’re really blessed.”
Michael Tooler Principal, Sattler Christian CollegeNT Christian College is the Senior Years Education Provider for NT Christian Schools. NTCC provides Years 10, 11 and 12 education across a number of NT Christian School campuses including Marrara Christian College, Palmerston Christian College, Sattler Christian College, Araluen Christian College and Nhulunbuy Christian College.
For over 30 Years NT Christian College has provided high quality Christian education in a positive, rigorous and community-focused environment. The aim of NT Christian College is to provide an exceptional Christian education for students and families across the NT, no matter their gifts, abilities or background.
“Our goal is to challenge and help all our students to ‘find their path’. To help them understand who they are as learners and what their passions and abilities are so that they may develop and cultivate the strengths they have to help them find the life and vocational path that is right for them,” says Principal Joel van Bentum.
“We then seek to challenge them so they may confidently step into their future. We work to develop all aspects of our students personally, academically and socially and work to give them the skills they need to live, work and navigate the challenges of our world.”
There are three Early Learning Centres operating as part of NT Christian Schools: on our Marrara school campus, Kingdom Kids ELC on our Palmerston school campus, and ELC on our Sattler school campus.
Each of these ELCs shares the vision of NT Christian Schools – to be Christian communities, learning together to live as God intended, offering hope for the world. To this end they are committed to providing an engaging, authentic and fun learning experience for every child entrusted to their care, based on a Christian world view.

Capacity Plus is the training arm of Northern Territory Christian Schools. Capacity Plus includes accredited and non-accredited training, and it services both Aboriginal communities in remote areas and urban areas in Darwin, Katherine and Alice. It also provides accredited Vocational Education Training, which is undertaken by senior high school students and others.
“All of our programs are working at equipping and empowering people, especially people trying to find their pathway,” explains Darran Plumb, Capacity Plus’ Director Of Training and Community Impact. “You might be a high school student or you might be in a remote community, either way, you want to grow, you want to flourish. And so our job is to help you flourish in your setting, find your path, find your future.”
“Every individual is created in God’s image. Every individual has their own unique skill set and gift mix. And so for you to flourish, you need to be able to express who you are as a unique individual.”
For a high school student, that might look like doing an accredited Certificate II in a particular course as part of their senior high school studies. It could involve accredited training that puts them on a pathway to an apprenticeship or trade or into a vocation that they love and enjoy. Equally, it might be about an individual trying a couple of different courses as they consider their future and explore what they are passionate about. For a new parent living in a remote community, it might look like undertaking an eight-week FAST (Families and Schools Together) course in their local community, acquiring skills that strengthen their relationships and empower them to thrive as a family.
Capacity Plus was previously known as Transforming Training and has been delivering quality training in the NT for decades. In the 2022 NT Training Awards, Capacity Plus was awarded Runner Up in the category of Small Training Provider of the year – placing above the stiff competition of other high-quality RTOs.
Transforming Training has been providing opportunities for students across the Territory for decades. Those opportunities have been very much in the areas of early learning and education support, community services, and construction and engineering, and each one of these has had a key part in the story of NT Christian Schools.
“In 2022, under the training arm of Capacity Plus we brought together the FAST program that looks after families and all of the registered training, in a continuum of training available through programs ranging from bespoke training opportunities for staff and students, all the way through to registered training that provides a qualification at the end.”
Now, we are continuing to really explore what Capacity Plus is going to be able to do in the future, and are so excited about the opportunities we can continue to integrate into creating pathways for all students.”
Nhulunbuy Christian College (NCC) is a co-educational Primary and Middle School of more than 200 students that currently caters for students from Transition to Year 11. With beautiful sea views and bush, Nhulunbuy Christian College is located in a quiet corner of Nhulunbuy, in the Northern Territory’s Northeast Arnhem Land. Nhulunbuy is located on the traditional homelands of the Yolngu Aboriginal people.
Opened in 1998, the college has been providing highquality Christian education in this remote area of Arnhem Land for over 20 years.
The school’s facilities include a spectacular library and offer a wide array of opportunities to the student body. NCC seeks to provide Christian education where Jesus is at the centre, so children have the freedom to learn and grow as Christ intended. The school aims to be academically rigorous, develop students’ character and promote healthy relationships amongst the community.
Mark Twine has recently taken on the role of Principal at NCC. Mark was previously the Primary Coordinator at Sattler Christian College in Darwin and has also worked in a range of different school contexts from Southeast Asia, to North America.
“They’re all very different types of schooling, whether it’s an inner city low socioeconomic area or a very mixed multicultural school to in rural Darwin. And what’s really exciting is that no matter where I have been, I have been working with young people, investing in them and helping them to be all that they can be. I love education,” Mark explains.
“It is a genuine privilege to now take on the role of principal at Nhulunbuy Christian College,” Mark says. “This is a very special school from location to student body to staff.”
“The staff at NCC are committed to ensuring every child has the opportunity to ‘Grow in Wisdom, Serve Others and Change the World’— which is our school motto. We are passionate about working together as a staff body to be the best educators we can be in order to bring out the best in every student.”
Our school community is one that is nurturing.
Every student at Nhulunbuy Christian college has been created by God in God’s image. They are unique and valuable. Our role as teachers and staff is to create a learning environment where they can discover that and flourish.”
Gäwa Christian School provides Christian education from Transition to Year 10. The college is divided into two classes: Mayawa and Damala. Mayawa is for students from Transition to Year 5 and Damala is for students from Year 6 to Year 10. Each class has approximately 20 students. Gäwa is an integral part of the local community and is well respected by local residents and elders.
Located on the beautiful Elcho Island and opened in 2004, Gäwa Christian School is blessed with stunning landscape and sea views. Elcho Island is an island off the coast of the Northern Territory. It is located at the southern end of the Wessel Islands group located in the East Arnhem Region. Elcho Island is approximately 55 km long and 6 km across at its widest point. Galiwin’ku, located near the island’s southern tip, is the main community on the island. It is the largest Aboriginal community in northeast Arnhem Land and is the second largest Aboriginal community in the Northern Territory. Gäwa is situated on the northern tip of the island, approximately 1 1/2 hours drive from the main township of Galiwin’ku.
To tell the history of Gäwa Christian School, the history of Gawa itself as a homeland needs to be told. Gäwa belongs to the Warramiri clan (mala) of the Yolngu people of North-East Arnhem Land. Warramiri people have traditional homelands both on the mainland and in the string of islands now known as The Wessel Islands. For thousands of years Gäwa, situated on the northern tip of Elcho Island, was used sporadically
as a place for various clans to conduct ceremonies and meetings. There is evidence that some Macassan sailors also knew of the area with Yolngu both trading with and avoiding these visitors at various times.
With the introduction of the Mission at the southern end of Elcho Island in the mid-twentieth century, some Yolngu left their traditional homelands and island homes to live and be educated at Galiwinku. Others remained on their homelands and enjoyed the trading relationship and friendship of ‘Bapa Sheppy’, the Mission Superintendant. There was no permanent community at Gäwa and only an old well and a traditional meeting site (Dhulmudhunupa) by the beach distinguished it from the surrounding bush.
By the early 1980’s, after the official end of the Mission era and the beginning of self-determination, some of the older people began to talk of returning more permanently to their homelands. One old man (Ngulpurray) had a vision for his kin to live in the Gäwa/Nanginyburra region. Gäwa was chosen as the preferable homeland site.
DARWINThere was then no road to Gäwa, so in 1985, Ngulpurray took his clan daughter Kathy Guthadjaka (Gotha) and her husband Colin Baker to Gäwa by boat. On this first visit they had the chance to hear some of the old stories of the land and make a preliminary survey. It was decided that the traditional meeting place would be hard to access by boat in the Wet and would be very hot underfoot at times. And so a new area to the east, overlooking the small bay was chosen as a possible residential site.
Upon returning to Galiwinku, plans were made to begin the process of cutting a road to Gawa. Elders from Djuranalpi began this task with chainsaw and axes and a track was established for the first time. Gotha, Colin and other family members began to visit Gäwa on weekends, helping to form a better road and enjoying the wonderful hunting opportunities the land provides. In 1991, with children regularly present, Gotha as a teacher working at Sheppardson College, applied to be stationed at Gäwa to teach them. This offer was declined, but undeterred Gotha decided to take six months leave with no pay to teach
on the homeland as a ‘trial’. The six months turned into a full year but by the end of 1991 there was the encouragement of Gäwa being registered as an official Homeland Learning Centre.
After many years of struggle and limited support Gotha and Colin’s desire to become a Christian School was granted in 2004. Gäwa opened under the banner of NT Christian Schools. Up to approximately 60 students from three homelands attend Gawa Christian School and the small community of Gäwa is thriving. God has chosen this place for His people.
To tell the history of Gawa Christian School, the history of Gawa itself as a homeland needs to be told.”

Araluen Christian College caters for students from Transition to senior school. Located at the foot of the magnificent Tjoritja – the Arrente name for the MacDonnell Ranges – right in the heart of Alice Springs, Araluen encourages its students to dream big, develop their confidence and become all that God has called them to be.
At Araluen, students’ unique gifts and strengths are developed to benefit and serve others throughout the wider community of Alice Springs.
“We believe that it is our responsibility to develop a servant heart mentality within our students,” explains Principal Damien Gainsford.
“There is immense power when a group of people with similar interests gets together to work toward the same goals. The Christian faith says that if we are to work, and pray, with others, our return of labour will be greater. Our staff and students recognise this concept with every educational opportunity they are involved in, it is a collaborative effort to not only increase the educational outcomes of the students but increase their understanding of the significance God plays in this process. Our College is built around a foundation of developing the community. Our community ensures children feel they are cared for and that they belong. Cross-age relationships are natural, and at Araluen, age, gender and Year level are no barrier to growth and development personally and in the educational journey.”
As committed Christians, Araluen’s staff and teaching team do not view their jobs as simply earning a living, but as opportunities to make a difference in the lives of the children with whom they interact. They believe that students are individuals and endeavour to love, nurture, help, protect and prepare them through positive teaching.
“Beliefs and values are ‘caught’ as well as taught. Staff develop caring, pastoral relationships with students which are similar to those expressed at home. Our hope is that students will observe these relationships and put them into practice with those around them,” says Damien.
The Bible is the foundation of all education and development.”
