STRONG

As we edge toward the year’s end, it’s important to take stock of the good things happening across our region.
If you ever need a reminder of just how impressive our business community is, try sitting on the judging panel for our business awards. Every entrant brings their own brand of determination and cleverness, from ambitious start-ups punching well above their weight, to established operators who still innovate and flex to take the next step. It paints a vivid picture of a region that refuses to rest on its laurels. And while the judging is hard (very hard), it is one of the most rewarding parts of my job.
Th is excellence was also on full display at our recent Westpac Smarts event where we brought together local developers who are investing not just money (important though that is), but also a clear vision into creating building projects that are bold, thoughtful, and anchored in a genuine commitment of contributing to a thriving, liveable region. Hearing directly from the people driving them reminds us that growth doesn’t happen by accident. Judging by the packed room and lively conversations, confidence is definitely on an upward trajectory.

watching younger members of your family race in the one mile, or dancing to The Black Seeds at the top of Trafalgar Street, there really was something for everybody.
It paints a vivid picture of a region that refuses to rest on its laurels."
Events like this are more than entertainment - they’re the glue that holds our region together. They remind us why living, working, and doing business here feels so special.
So, as we say goodbye to 2025, there’s a sense of positivity in the air. Yes, it’s been a busy one, but the signs of resilience and community connection are everywhere. In these pages, you’ll find stories that reflect exactly that.
Have a great Christmas and summer, and see you again in 2026.
A nd if all that wasn’t enough to lift our spirits, last weekend we had The Spectacle festival of running lighting up the hills and centre of town. Whether you were running the 100km,
Ali Boswijk CHIEF EXECUTIVE Nelson Tasman Chamber of Commerce

A major upgrade of Nelson Airport's parking systems will introduce online booking and payment options, as well as ticketless entry.

Nelson Airport chief executive Brendan Cook says the improvements are designed to modernise the airport’s systems, providing easier and more convenient options for customers, alongside parking discounts of up to 30% when parking is booked in advance.
“We’re investing in new technology including upgraded licence plate recognition cameras, new pay machines, and online booking and payment platforms for customers. We’re also going ticketless which will make entry and exit easier, as well as being kinder to the environment.”
The changes came into effect on 1 December 2025.
For those with business accounts, the new system will also provide online account management and payment.
Brendan said there would also be changes to the airport’s Long Stay Carpark, with the removal of an hourly rate in this carpark.
“The Long Stay Carpark is intended for those parking with us for an extended period of time – five days or more. At day five, a significant discount kicks in,
with the daily price dropping to $7 a day. To get the best available rates, people should use the Main Carpark for stays of less than five days, and the Long Stay Carpark if parking for five days plus.”
Brendan said the first 15 minutes of airport parking remained free. There would be a modest increase in driveup rates for airport parking, he said.
“We’re making a significant investment in our systems, which has required an increase in our standard drive-up prices. We’re very aware of the price pressures the entire community is under at the moment, and we encourage people to take advantage of the cheaper prices that are available by booking and paying in advance. The further in advance you book, the better the discount – with rates cheaper than our current pricing available.”
Half-hourly eBus services and good quality bike storage facilities are among the lowcost alternatives available for those who prefer not to use airport parking.
More information is available at nelsonairport.co.nz/ parking-upgrades.

One of the most asked questions we get is: in a break up, why do lawyers need to investigate everything when both parties already agree?
When couples separate or wish to make arrangements about how their property will be divided, having a lawyer is not just helpful, it is essential if you want your agreement to be valid and enforceable. Most people value certainty, and once explained, understand the wisdom of having an enforceable agreement so they can confidently move on with the next stage of their lives.
In New Zealand, relationship property is governed by the Property (Relationships) Act 1976 (the “Act”). Sections 21 and 21A allow couples to contract out of the equal-sharing provisions, meaning they can decide how to divide assets and debts in a way that suits their circumstances rather than following the default 50:50 split.
These agreements can be made during the relationship, after separation, or before significant life changes. However, the law places strict requirements on how these

agreements are prepared and signed, and this is where a lawyer’s role becomes vital.
Under the Act, a relationship property agreement will only be binding if it is in writing, signed by both parties, and each party has received independent legal advice about its effects and implications. The lawyer for each party must witness that person’s signature and certify that they have advised their client. This certification is more than a formality. It ensures that each party understands the legal consequences before committing. Without meeting these requirements, an agreement will be void and unenforceable.

In order to be able to provide that important certification, a lawyer will need to:
• Understand your circumstances and identify all assets and liabilities –ensuring all relationship property is captured and valued, including formal valuations where necessary.
• Explain the law – what the Act would provide if no agreement was entered into.
• Assess fairness and risks – including whether the proposed agreement is consistent with the law and whether there are potential legal or financial pitfalls.
• Draft or review the agreement – ensuring clarity, precision, and compliance with legislative requirements so it stands up to scrutiny.
• Protect against future disputes –particularly if you are contracting out of the Act and circumstances may change over time.
• Provide truly independent advice – so no one accidentally gives up rights or entitlements of greater value than they realise.
Courts can set aside agreements that cause serious injustice, especially if someone did not understand the implications or was pressured. The process followed before signing will be closely examined. A good lawyer will avoid this by ensuring their client has proper advice, access to valuations, time to consider options and a full understanding of the agreement. A lawyer should also explain how the agreement interacts with other legal issues such as trusts, inheritances or tax and involve other professionals when needed.
In short, you need a lawyer in relationship property matters not just because the law requires it, but because the stakes are high. A well-advised, properly considered agreement provides certainty and the best protection against future claims.

If your website is not optimised for AI, your business may become invisible." make your business
Tony Downing covers why optimising for search results has moved beyond Google, and what you should be doing to be seen.
Iwas recently asked to “make my business show up in AI search results.”
You might be asking the same thing if you rely on your website to bring in new business.
You may notice your website is being pushed further down search results as paid ads and AI-generated results rise to the top.
On top of that, people are bypassing Google and using AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini or Copilot to get answers on which products and services to buy. ALERT! If your website is not optimised for AI search, then your business may become invisible.
Good SEO (search engine optimisation) is still important for regional businesses and will help you get noticed by AI, but there are some fundamental things that you can do to influence showing up in AI results.
Trusted, experienced expertise, and being recognised as an authority is important to get cited as a source of answers to AI questions.
If someone asks AI, “What is the best [your type of business] in Nelson, New Zealand?” you want to be part of the answer. This means you need to be seen as an expert in your field in a way that makes sense to AI.
Space won’t allow me to go into the behindthe-scenes tech things your website requires, but some of the easier things you can do are:
Write articles and pages that show you are an expert in your field. Answer questions your customers might ask AI. You can use AI to find out what questions they are asking, but make sure you write your own answers in your own voice.

• Use question-based subheadings and make sure you answer the question clearly.
• Write a concise page summary at the top of your pages, something that AI can easily pick up.
• Use specific data, statistics, testimonials and case studies to show authority.
• Use logical structure and plain language.
• Add FAQs at the bottom of the page.
• Don’t forget to use your About Us page and team bios to showcase your expertise and credentials.
Work to get your brand mentioned and linked to from other reputable websites.
The more your brand gets mentioned across the web on LinkedIn, Chamber profiles, local directories, Reddit, YouTube, or partner sites, the more authority signals AI can detect.
Does it sound like more work for your marketing team? It is, but it is also an opportunity.

Some of you may have spotted a notification earlier this year through the Council's Antenno app about science equipment being deployed in Tasman Bay. That was Cawthron's science in action! Our marine scientists are trialling a new approach to help restore the health and resilience of our coastal environment.
The Cawthron team has installed a series of small, experimental-scale artificial reefs in the bay. These structures are designed to act as secure foundations for baby mussels, giving them protection from predators and shifting sediments on the seafloor. Baby mussels grown at marine farms are vulnerable when being used for restoration and may need a helping hand to establish and grow.

Within just one week of deployment, some of the reefs are showing promising results. The reefs have been filled with their new mussel residents, generously donated by MacLab, and the team is now monitoring how they take hold. This work is about restoring balance to Tasman Bay. Historically, the bay was rich with healthy shellfish reefs and scallop beds which supported clearer water, more diverse marine life, and ultimately healthier coastal ecosystems. This directly benefitted local communities and businesses, as cleaner water and healthy coastal ecosystems supported more abundant fisheries, aquaculture, and tourism. Sadly, historic dredging and changes in land use contributed to a shift toward a more simplified, muddy seafloor. We don’t see strong signs of natural recovery at the scale that’s needed, so we’re stepping in to help kick-start the rebuilding of these habitats.
This helps us learn what's possible for Tasman Bay's future; for the ecosystem, for the people, and for our region's economy."

Artificial reefs are a promising restoration tool that may help native habitats recover in highly impacted areas like Tasman Bay. They act as habitat building blocks, creating structure and stability above the seafloor where it can be difficult for species like mussels to become established. They also align with Cawthron’s ki uta ki tai (mountains-to-sea) approach to restoration, which recognises how land, freshwater, and marine environments are interconnected.
It’s early days for a new approach but it’s a positive beginning. If these mussels are able to form and grow into stable reefs on and around the artificial reefs, then it presents a potential new way that mussels can be reintroduced to
degraded areas of the seafloor. If this works, then future restored reefs will go on to filter water and create habitat for a whole range of species. In fact, our team has already spotted juvenile snapper and spotties hanging out inside some of the reefs themselves!
Healthy, productive seas underpin the local economy by supporting commercial and recreational fishing, tourism operators, and businesses that rely on the coast. This is also what makes the coastal lifestyle in this region so attractive.
While these observations are encouraging, there is still a lot of mahi that we need to do to understand the value of using artificial reefs to assist with the restoration of our taonga species. Furthermore, any future larger-scale artificial reef development in Tasman Bay would need to be co-designed with iwi, local communities, businesses, and environmental organisations to ensure shared priorities and lasting stewardship. This small-scale deployment is an important step in gathering the science needed to inform those discussions, and we welcome talking to anyone who may be interested in supporting and participating in this work.
We want to understand what will work best here, in our local environment. This trial helps us learn what’s possible for Tasman Bay’s future; for the ecosystem, for the people who rely on it, and for our region’s economy.

According to Mike Martel, it might be time to learn Keetrax's simple hack if your usual marketing playbook just isn't converting.
Business Award season is here, and the (long!) list of entrants in this magazine proves one thing: businesses in Nelson and Tasman love punching above their weight.
It’s impressive. Especially when you realise that behind each business lies a unique story (undoubtedly full of late nights, marital strain, and a constant test of the owners’ passion and mettle).
I know from personal experience that building a business can sometimes feel like taming a wild beast with nothing but a dictionary and a hopeful look. And even once you're finally established, you still need to work to somehow keep the sales coming in - and increasing.
That’s typically when some marketing expert comes around to tell you that you just need to “fill the funnel” and “growth will come.”
So you boost your latest post on Facebook,
run a radio ad, and (maybe) even launch a Boxing Day sale. You get a few clicks, some new faces walk through the door, and then… silence.

“Why?” you ask yourself.
Previously, you just needed to attract customers, build some trust, and off to the checkout they went. But your new leads don’t convert as well as your original customers.
Your mettle and passion are tested once again: you’re doing all the "marketing" things, but the results feel random, not like you’re building a business at all.
That’s because your business changed, and the old playbook is broken.
Luckily, there is a better playbook, and it’s no secret handshake. We call it the ABCDs of marketing.

It all starts here. Notice we didn't say "attract"? Attracting is passive. Acquiring is active. It's about finding the right people - your peopleand getting their attention. It’s the difference between a hundred random clicks and ten
So, you’ve got their attention.
Now, you build a bond. Show them you’re more than a logo. Are you the cheeky local butcher? The comforting, quiet bookstore? The no-nonsense mechanic who actually shows you the broken part? It’s the behind-thescenes video; a well-placed joke; your origin story. It’s what makes a customer feel like a regular before they’ve even spent a dollar.
If you’ve done 'B' right, 'C' isn't a sleazy sales pitch. It’s the next logical step.
You’ve built the bond, you've proved your value, and now you convert them into a customer. It’s not a hard sell, it’s an invitation.
So you've got their attention. Now what - sell? Wrong."
You just need to make it stupidly simple to buy the thing they already want.
You made the sale. Pop the champagne, right? Wrong again, because real growth starts here: delight. Now you can turn a one-time buyer into a lifetime advocate. It’s the handwritten 'thank you' note in the bag. It’s remembering their usual coffee order (thanks, Java Hut). It’s the follow-up email that’s actually helpful. It's what builds community and makes your customers feel seen. They’ll come back for more, and they’ll become your own free marketing team, telling friends, family, and that random person in the queue at Four Square.
That’s the system. It’s not a magic trick. It's a growth loop. Does it make the hard work 'easy'? No. But as for taming that beast, you can put the dictionary down. You've got the ABCDs now.

It's been a big year for Go Accounting, and one that's put the region firmly on the national stage
At the 2025 Gap Awards in Auckland, Go Accounting took home not one but two major honours: the Three Freedoms Award (for the second year running) and the Gap Champion Award, recognising the firm’s CEO, Manoli Aerakis, for leading the way in advisory excellence.
The Three Freedoms Award celebrates how Go Accounting helps business owners achieve what matters most - time freedom, financial freedom, and mind freedom.
What makes it truly special is that it’s based on real client results and testimonials, not submissions or marketing claims. It’s recognition of work that’s transforming lives and businesses right here in the region.
For director Michael Parker, the awards represent more than trophies.

“The moment that stood out most was being on stage with our whole team. These awards reflect the culture we’ve built and the way everyone shows up for our clients every single day.”
That culture has become a hallmark of Go Accounting. From its purpose-built Richmond office - complete with an on-site gym, podcast studio, and spaces designed to spark collaboration - to the energy the team brings to client relationships, Go Accounting continues to redefine what a modern accounting firm can be.

Whether it’s helping clients plan smarter, work with more clarity, or simply have more time for the things they love, the team’s focus remains the same: helping businesses Go Further, Go Faster, and Go Smarter.
