From the CEO
Training opportunities ramp up with new courses, Business Award applications are open, and big things on the agenda for this year's upcoming AGM.
Welcome to the winter edition of Commerce Comment. Now that we are in June, we are moving quickly towards Aspire 2024. We are very pleased once again to be presenting a full programme of interesting and inspiring speakers from here in Nelson and around the country. We are also grateful to the Hon. Nicola Willis for making time in her busy schedule to come to Nelson and address the conference. With the budget now public, there will be much to discuss.
Winter is also a time for our AGM and this year it is being held on Wednesday 24th July. As is our usual approach this will be combined with a Findex BA5, details to be released shortly.
This year, as an Incorporated Society, and in line with new legislation, we have an obligation to review and update our constitution.
The NTCC board believe that this is a good opportunity to consider any other changes we might want to make to align the constitution with 21st-century governance best practice.
It is decades since our current constitution was written and while there have been minor amendments over the years, it is about time for a complete review.
We are in the very early stages of this process and will of course be consulting with our members about any proposed
changes. This will be discussed further at the AGM.
Still with the AGM, this year we are looking to appoint a new board member. If you are interested in putting your name forward, you need to be a member of the Chamber, have business expereince and ideally an understanding of governance. Please contact me directly if you are interested (ali@commerce.org.nz )and nominations close on 14th of June.
Training has always been an important aspect of our work to support members and the wider business community. In recent years, Covid certainly influenced the areas we focused on and the way we delivered. However, this year we are focusing heavily on training that supports those core functions, and based on your feedback, that businesses need. This includes the obvious things such as health and safety, business growth and strategy and people management, and we have introduced some new offerings such as Prince2 Project Management Foundation Training. We also continue to work with our partners at MMCA to deliver the Building Better Business series.
Just a final reminder that the 35th Nelson Pine Industries Business Awards are open. Applications need to be in by 26th August (heaps of time!). Please visit our website for more information Nelson Tasman Chamber of Commerce Business Awards (ntccbusinessawards.org.nz).

But having entered twice before winning, I can honestly say that it's been worth the effort every time. It has become a tradition for Keetrax, because awards night is that moment in the year that our team can wholeheartedly cheer for our business's success. Upgrades complete at each end of airport terminal
If you’ve visited the airport this year you’ll have seen plenty of construction activity happening. In late January we began two projects to improve pedestrian, cyclist and vehicle access and safety.
The first was to improve the walkway between the Value Carpark and the terminal past Airport House, removing redundant roads and footpaths and creating a new wide and direct footpath, with plenty of room for people with trolleys to pass one another. We also added pedestrian crossings, better lighting, and more CCTV coverage to enhance safety.
At the other end of the terminal building, we’ve added two new covered bike sheds, tripling the bike storage facilities at the airport. This project also created a new rubbish and recycling compound, safer vehicle access and extra authorised parking spaces, which will free up more space in our public car parks.
The work, which was completed last month, is part of an ongoing programme to lift the overall airport environment to a high standard that complements the terminal building.
Inside the terminal we’ve also added some new touches with comfortable seating for grown-ups and kids, and a “book nook” - a cosy space for little people to snuggle up with a book, puzzle or toys while waiting for a flight.
These elements have been added as a result of feedback on our 2023 Customer Survey. Our 2024 survey has just been completed and will provide important information on what our customers would like to see to make the airport experience even more enjoyable.
It’s important our airport is a facility the community can be proud of, and improvements will be ongoing as we work towards our vision of being a world-class airport where zero-emissions aircraft operate.

The power of citizen science
As we tackle some of the most pressing challenges of our time – climate change, biodiversity loss and food security – it is obvious this cannot be done in isolation. By harnessing the collective efforts of engaged citizens to contribute to scientific research, we can achieve much more, and faster. Cawthron’s latest research is focused on the biodiversity and health of our ocean’s ecosystems, and helping us with this effort is a group of sailors passionate about making a difference to the marine environment.
Cawthron, together with New Zealand Geographic, recently launched a new conservation charity called ‘Citizens of the Sea’, which is a citizen science initiative that aims to map the health of our oceans at scale.
Sailors from 25 boats participating in the 2024 Pacific Rally have joined the cause, and will collect environmental DNA water samples as they sail through the Pacific over the next four-to-six months.
Through a partnership with global genomics leaders Illumina, samples collected by the sailors using Cawthron’s innovative ‘TorpeDNA’ sampling device, will be analysed using the latest environmental DNA technology to provide an unprecedented amount of data about biodiversity in the Pacific, and the impact of climate change.
I was privileged to attend the launch of Citizens of the Sea in Opua recently and was struck by the enthusiasm of these sailors who see themselves as ocean champions. Driven by a passionate ambition to make a difference, and their deep care for the ocean, these sailors will transform their boats into
floating labs for half an hour every day as they capture and log water samples.
The Pacific Rally is just the starting point for Citizens of the Sea’s vision, but with the support of new partners and funders, we’d like to take this initiative global so that we can provide a new level of data for scientists, conservationists and decision-makers worldwide.
This is just one example of how individuals and communities are contributing to science and restoration efforts. At the end of May we also celebrated the Cawthron Aotearoa New Zealand Freshwater Champions in Wellington, which recognises those who are helping to restore and protect the health of our freshwater from riparian planting to education and advocacy. There are countless people across the country doing their part to improve our freshwater and marine environments, and we applaud their efforts.
That’s why our Annual Thomas Cawthron Memorial Lecture this year is focusing on the power of communities and citizen science. Cawthron’s Dr Xavier Pochon, founding scientist of Citizens of the Sea, will be speaking about this amazing initiative, alongside a very special guest speaker who we will be announcing soon. We would love to see as many of our local community there as possible.
In the meantime, I encourage you to explore citizen science programmes and restoration efforts here in Te Tauihu. We are incredibly fortunate to live in an area surrounded by natural wonders and outdoor spaces that enrich our lives and our livelihoods, and we can all give back and protect our local environments in all kinds of ways. Whether that be monitoring wildlife populations or invasive species, to planting native gardens, we all have a part to play in preserving our environment for future generations to come.
Save the date
We are pleased to announce the 81st Annual Thomas Cawthron Memorial Lecture will be held on Thursday 8 August at the Annesbrook Events Centre.

MARKETING: Making it
a priority
Are you a business owner who struggles to make time for marketing? Tony Downing has some practical advice on how to get started when making marketing a priority is the hardest part.
"Marketing... um, yeah, I need to get onto that."
Aregular admission by lots of business owners. We know that we should commit more resources-time, people, and money to marketing.
But understandably other tasks get in the way. Operations, getting the ‘real work’ done, attracting and keeping staff, finances and compliance, as well as health and safety. These are all important things that often seem a lot easier to attend to before marketing.
Ask anyone running a small to medium-sized business and they will tell you; the hardest thing about marketing is making it a priority.
One of the main reasons for this is that marketing doesn’t offer a quick-fix solution. Marketing demands a commitment to delayed gratification.
With sales calls and digital advertising, you can see the immediate impact of your approach. In a sales call, the prospect either accepts or rejects your offer.
Marketing, on the other hand, is about cultivating future demand. The effort you invest in marketing today may not provide immediate results. Create and build share of mind now, for share of wallet long-term.
There are a couple of things you can do to get the ball rolling on marketing your business:
Get the ‘Just do it’ attitude. Don’t let the irony of that mantra be lost on you. It's no coincidence that successful names in business, those companies that are thriving, are dedicated to marketing and executing a strategy as part of their business plan.
Make a date with marketing. Block out a set time each week to focus on marketing. Even if it is only 30 minutes a week to start with. Small steps are better than nothing.
Set some marketing goals, and allocate time to reaching them.
You might want your brand to be one that customers love and recall first when they think of your work category. You may want to use marketing to increase the value of our products, or maybe you want to become known as the very best business in your field. Whatever you want to achieve, put it into a plan with some realistic timelines.
Improve your messaging.
Have a clear and appealing reason for people to choose your business instead of the competition. This is a core marketing task that ensures you can consistently tell your story to potential customers across your website, social media and other communications.
Get an understanding of who your ideal customer / audience is.
There are so many opportunities, channels, and platforms on offer, but if we aren’t clear on who we want to speak to and where and how to talk to them, we can’t successfully start.
Identify what makes you stand out and tell people about it.
Take a stance on why your business is offering something unique, and make a statement.
If you do one thing today, it should be to understand the transformative power that marketing has on your business.
When executed effectively, marketing will enhance every facet of your business.

Learn about the benefits and challenges of upgrading to the latest version of Microsoft Windows
What is Windows 11 and why should you care?
Windows 11 is the newest operating system from Microsoft, designed to offer a more modern, secure, and productive experience for users and businesses. It introduces new features such as a redesigned user interface, Android app support, and Copilot, Microsoft’s AI service. Windows 11 also promises faster updates, better performance, and enhanced security.
What is the timeline for Windows 10 support and why does it matter?
Microsoft has announced that Windows 10 will reach its end of support on October 14, 2025. After this date, Windows 10 users will no longer receive security updates, bug fixes, or technical assistance from Microsoft. This could expose users to potential security risks, compatibility issues, and performance degradation, which is why unsupported operating systems are not covered by Cybersecurity Insurance. October 2025 might seem like forever away, but there are issues worth considering that will squeeze that timeframe down.
What are the potential constraints on the supply chain and how can you prepare?
The global pandemic has disrupted the supply chain of many industries, including the PC market. The demand for PCs has surged as more people work and learn from home, while the supply of components such as chips, memory, and displays has been constrained by factory closures, transportation delays, and trade
tensions. The result is higher prices, longer lead times, and limited availability of PCs. During limited availability, government and essential services are prioritised.
2025 will be no better. Businesses that transitioned to a mobile fleet as a response to the pandemic now are faced with refreshing their fleet of devices. To avoid these challenges, it is advisable to order your PCs early, choose models that are in stock, and work with a trusted partner who can help you navigate the supply chain complexities.
It is always preferable to jump off the diving board into calm, warm water on a sunny day for a swim, than being pushed off a gangplank into stormy, shark infested waters at night-time desperately trying to reach shore while being dragged down by the others who were pushed off with you. So, we recommend you start swimming early, here is your opportunity to truly be ahead of the curve.
What are the cool features of Windows 11 and how can you benefit from them?
Windows 11 offers many cool features that can enhance your productivity, creativity, and collaboration. Some of these features are:
• Copilot: A generative Artificial Intelligence service from Microsoft that helps you with various computing tasks. Search your data, generate text and images, and automate your work.
• Android app support: Windows 11 lets you run Android apps on your PC, giving you access
to millions of apps that you can use for work or play. You can download Android apps from the Amazon Appstore or the Microsoft Store.
• Widgets: Windows 11 provides a personalized feed of information that you can access from the taskbar. You can use widgets to check the weather, news, calendar, traffic, stocks, and more.
• Snap layouts: Windows 11 helps you organize your windows and apps on your screen with predefined layouts. You can choose from different snap layouts depending on the size and orientation of your screen.
How can you start the conversation about upgrading to Windows 11?
Windows 11 is more than just an operating system. It is a platform that can empower you and your business to achieve more. If you are interested in learning more about Windows 11, you can start by visiting the Microsoft website, watching the Windows 11 launch event. You can also contact us at BlueBerryIT to discuss your needs, questions, and concerns. We are here to help you make the best decision for your PC upgrade. Harnessing forestry waste to drive down New Zealand’s coal dependency
Ever been into a commercial forest?
The reality is that even though wood is a renewable product, essential to the modern way of life, generally the market dictates what is valued, and for forestry this means big logs. The remaining slash (branches, stumps and offcuts) is known as wood residues and is often considered a waste product.
Forestry company OneFortyOne believes that this wood waste is both a design and a market flaw, and is putting its collective minds towards finding useful applications for this wood fibre previously only viewed as a problem.
Mark Coghill, OneFortyOne Operations Manager, says the company has invested close to a million dollars into the biofuel project since late 2021.
“The majority of the investment made has gone towards collecting, measuring and storing the wood fibre. Over the next five years we hope to reduce the amount of wood waste (or slash) in our forests by at least 75,000 tonnes. That’s enough wood to fill 2,000 logging trucks,” he explains.
In a recent breakthrough, the company has signed a new five-year agreement with Canterbury Woodchip Supplies which will see wood fibre previously left in the forest now turned into biofuel, a renewable resource which can displace environmentally damaging coal.
The timing of this coincides with local company J.S. Ewers new biomass boiler upgrade, and some of the wood will be used in their new boiler.
Removing such a massive quantity of otherwise unvalued material from the forests and turning it into biofuel in the form of woodchips could help local businesses avoid burning more than 22 thousand tonnes of coal over five years, says Coghill.
With a good deal of New Zealand’s coal being imported, there is a multiplier effect achieved, by using a locally developed product as an effective coal substitute.
Coghill says slash is often regarded as a problem for the
forestry industry generally, but notes that OneFortyOne decided to look at it as an opportunity instead.
That led to talks with Canterbury Woodchips, a seasoned operator producing various processed wood products for use in parks, playgrounds, as animal bedding – and industrial boilers and other heating sources.
Coghill notes ‘huge potential’ for the project if scaled up, adding that ‘it could be a game-changer for New Zealand in creating a sustainable source of bioenergy.’
Coghill says he is continually looking for ways to improve slash management.
“Replacing fossil fuels with bioenergy alternatives can help meet emission targets and create new opportunities for the local economy,” he says.
“As we look to the future and further innovation to help the environment, there is more wood fibre available and we are ready to work with other organisations to reduce the impact of slash, prevent climate damage, and create economic opportunities for the Top of the South region,” he says.
