It’s that time again The long hot summer days are slowly coming to an end and the fall season is approaching. We as residents of Southern Indiana recognize this as a sign that the Harvest Homecoming Festival is just around the corner.

Each year the Harvest Homecoming president is tasked with coming up with a theme for the festival. There have been many great themes over the past 46 years but one theme has been absent and well overdue.

I am proud to announce the theme for the 2014 Harvest Homecoming Festival: “Harvest of Honor.”

This year’s theme is meant to pay tribute to our Armed Forces and First Responders. For those who serve or have served and given their life to protect our freedom.

Jeff Cummins talks about the festival and its future, page 35.

In choosing this theme for our festival it is our way of giving honor and thanks to those who are so often overlooked.

So as you attend the Harvest Homecoming this year please take a moment to say “Thank You” to those in uniform who are there to protect us from harm. Lastly, please keep our deployed Armed Forces in your thoughts as they are not able to enjoy this Harvest with their families as we are.

Baby Photo Contest Photos accepted from Sept. 22 through Oct. 9 and may be dropped off at Main Source Bank to Anita Dudley. All participants will be given a ribbon upon entering contest. Photos will be displayed at Main Source Bank, 100 E. Spring St., New Albany.

Photos must be 4 x 6 or smaller, color or black and white, professional or candid.

Two categories — up to and including 17 months, also 18 months up to and including age 3. Must be residents of Floyd, Clark or Harrison counties. Photos will not be returned. A panel of judges will select a boy and a girl winner in each category. Photos will be judged on Oct. 11 and the winners will be notified and posted on a window display. Only winners are required to be present at the closing ceremonies on Sunday, Oct. 12, to receive their trophy.

Ohio River Greenway 5k Run/Walk & Family Fitness Fun Day 9 a.m.: 5k Greenway race; 9:30 a.m.: Family Fun Run (1 mile); 10 a.m.: mayor’s address; 10 a.m.-12 p.m.: physical fitness demos at the Amphitheater; 9 a.m.-12 p.m.: Booths and free family activities, location: New Albany Riverfront and Amphitheater.

The Friends of the Ohio River Greenway are partnering with the Floyd County Physical Activity Coalition to bring you the Greenway 5k & Floyd County Family Fitness Day. All proceeds will support design, construction and ongoing maintenance of the Ohio River Greenway in Southern Indiana. Registration after Sept. 6 is $25. Join us for a family-friendly 5k run/walk to support the Greenway. The event will begin at the New Albany Amphitheater and take place on the Ohio River Greenway.

37th Pedaling Bicycle Tour Location: Forest Discovery Center in Starlight, (near Huber’s Farm and Winery).

Time: Packet pickup and late registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. and mass start begins at 9:30 a.m. Cycling helmets are mandatory for all participants and cyclists under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Routes, SAG stops, and lunch will remain open until 4 p.m. Entry Fee: The pre-registration fee is $25 per adult, and $15 for children 12 and under.

The deadline for pre-registration is Sept. 18.

Any entry postmarked after this deadline will be considered a late entry. Fees after this date are $35 for adults, and $17 for children 12 and under. Alpha Phi Move Your Phi’t 5k Heart Run/Walk Time: 9 a.m.-12 p.m. Location: Sam Peden Community Park, Grant Line Road.

Join us for a morning 5k walk/run. There will be a nutritionist, blood pressure screenings and free giveaways provided by Baptist East, and a kids zone featuring a bounce house and face painting. Registration is $25 which includes not only access to the event, but also a complimentary Tshirt. Purdue Pumpkin Chunking Competition Time: 6 p.m. Location: Purdue College of Technology, Charlestown Road, New Albany Can you hit the Great Pumpkin from 100 yards away using a gravity powered trebuchet (treb-yoo-shet) firing 5 to 7 pound pumpkins? Come to Purdue in New Albany on Oct. 7 and we’ll see.

You’ll be one of up to 18 total teams (6 youth teams plus 12 adult teams) competing for $400 in total prizes ($250 to hit the Great Pumpkin). Each team gets three attempts using supplied pumpkins. All machines must use gravity (falling weights) as their only source of power, pass the usual safety and functionality checks, and be ready for competition at 6 p.m. Prizes (cash & awards) for accuracy, originality, and efficiency will be presented at 7 p.m.

Jackson wins Homecoming crown

NEW ALBANY — Morgan Jackson will be making a return trip to the Miss Indiana Pageant next year after winning the Miss Harvest Homecoming crown in August.

Jackson was a second runner-up this year at state, and hopes to carry the momentum of winning the Harvest crown to a possible Miss Indiana title in 2015.

But first things first. She must reign over the 2014 Harvest Homecoming event which she is really looking forward to.

“I love the festival. It’s great,” said Jackson, 20, a junior and communications major at the University of Louisville. “For me the Harvest Homecoming festival is part of my life. I have so many appearances lined up during the festival, but I love to meet people. There is so much history behind it and the community really gets involved. The people work so hard to make it a family-friendly event.”

Jackson, whose platform is Project Educate, is a dancer. The Charlestown resident qualified for the Miss Indiana pageant last year through the Miss Metropolitan pageant. She said she was confident at

this year’s Harvest queen pageant, but not over-confident.

“I was prepared, but you never know,” she said.

She also said she takes being a role model to little girls very seriously.

“You don’t have to wear a crown on your head to be a role model,” she said.

This year’s pageant was held at Floyd Central and Jackson said as in past years, it was a quality event.

“It is absolutely one of the best scholarship pageants,” she said. “The people behind the pageant help make it what it is. The festival can not happen without the people.”

While Jackson can’t wait to represent the festival, she does have a few tough decisions to make — like which food to eat during booth days.

“I love all the food ... funnel cakes, corn on the cob,” she said. “It’s a tough choice.”

How do I register for the prizes?

Harvest Homecoming pins cost only $5 which is a great deal. You get a valuable coupon in every envelope redeemable at local establishments, and an entry form to be eligible to register for one of many great prizes to be given away on Sunday, Oct. 12.

Where can I get a Harvest Homecoming Pin? Pins go on sale in early September and will be available at financial institutions, Kroger, participating merchants, the Harvest Homecoming Office and various Harvest Homecoming events. They may also be purchased during the festival at the Information and Souvenir Booths.

Simply fill out the coupon in the pin envelope and drop it off at the Harvest Homecoming Office or at the Information or Souvenir Booths during Booth Days. Coupons must be turned in by 4 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 12, to be eligible for the pin prize drawing.

How do I apply for a booth at the Harvest Homecoming?

Harvest president credits volunteers for making festival go

NEW ALBANY — For the past few years Jeff Cummins and a few of his buddies meet the Wednesday before Harvest Homecoming booth days to go over festival logistics. But it turns out to be much more than that. For Cummins, it’s the start of a five-day race that ends late Sunday afternoon.

“That is when it hits you,” he said.

This year Cummins, 46, is president of that race known as the Harvest Homecoming Festival. He has been a volunteer for more than a decade and for the next two years, he will be the face of one of Indiana’s biggest festivals. He said after almost a year of planning, everything is coming together for the 47th annual event.

“I see myself in a leadership role; I kind of fill in the gaps,” he said. “They [festival directors, volunteers] all know what needs to be done. Once the festival gets going I am more of a figure head role. I am more of a behind the scenes guy, but I am not

afraid to be out front.”

The festival officially kicked off at the Harvest Homecoming Scholarship Pageant where Cummins unveiled this year’s theme, “Harvest of Honor,” and pin design.

He said he wanted to honor all those men in women who wear the uniform and all first-responders.

“We have never really done anything like that before,” he said.

All the favorite events return this year.

The parade will be Oct. 4 and booth days will run from Oct. 9-12. Cummins said he expects the 2014 version of the festival to be better than ever, he just hopes Mother Nature cooperates with great weather like last year.

“Last year was just one of those years where everything clicked,” he said. “The weather was great, unlike the year before when we had to close on Sunday because of the severe weather threat. At the end of the day there is nothing you can do but cross your fingers. Last year there was a deluge of rain during the parade and when we turned down Spring from Vincennes

there were lots of people who were out, lining the street, drenched like we were. They were out there because it was the parade.”

New to the festival this year will be the pumpkin chucking contest and Purdue is now a platinum sponsor of the festival.

Cummins said two areas he wants to improve on as president is the relationship with some of the downtown merchants who have voiced concerns about how booth days hurt their businesses. He also wants to recruit more volunteers, and try to get more youth involved in the festival.

“I want to try and get downtown merchants to understand what the festival is all about. It’s not just four days of booths, it’s about allowing non-profits and churches to set up booths and for many, make their budgets for the year,” he said. “It’s about the college scholarships, all the free kids events. Some don’t understand but many do. The Harvest Homecoming Festival is not just booths, it’s about giving back and giving New Albany the opportunity to show off a little. If they [visitors] don’t visit a business during the festival, there is a

good chance they will come back.”

Cummins said there are probably collectively 750 volunteers who help out in some area of the festival. Some, obviously, are more involved than others.

“None of us get paid. We do it because we are passionate about doing it,” he said.

“Our volunteers do a tremendous job. We have a lot of families involved and what we are trying to do is get more people involved. That was one of my jobs, volunteerism. There was a time when we had more people going out because of age or they had done it for years than we had coming in.”

Cummins said the festival is healthy and is more popular than ever. He said there is a waiting list for booths and people still “really look forward” to the festival each year.

He said all systems are go. “ There always seems to be certain things that go down to the end, but it always seems to come together,” he said. “ You are excited, but you always wonder is there something I missed.”
