In‐school workshops held by Yuwaalaraay designer Lucy Simpson of Gaawaa Miyay


Schools Reconciliation Challenge: Visual storytelling workshops

Classroom kit to include: • • • • • • • • • •

Activity Sheet for students (to be completed prior to workshop) Scratch‐foam printing board x 2‐4 Rubber Rollers x 2 pots non toxic water based block ink x 2‐4 printing barens (Japanese bamboo printing tool) x 1 pack baby wipes (to clean printing boards) Paper (colour and white) for printing x 2 perspex sheets for inking stations Paddle‐pop sticks Old newspapers

Schools to provide: • • • •

Pre‐cut newspaper sheets (used on desk to keep station clean) Collection of objects and textures (inspiration and mark making) ie leaves, seedpods, twigs, sponge etc Blunt pencils or ballpoint pens for etching into scratch‐foam Crayons, pencils, acrylic or watercolour paint, paintbrushes

In class Activities: • • • •

Time to complete Activity Sheet and work through exercises Discussion time on Aboriginal culture, reconciliation, and theme ‘Say something’ Time to discuss and develop individual concepts for artwork Time to develop ideas for design and representations of message / story

Schools Reconciliation Challenge: Visual storytelling workshops • NSWRC intro: Project, theme, and reconciliation. • Designer’s intro: Lucy Simpson. Activity: Voluntary classroom discussion on stories, designs and themes developed by students, and student’s thoughts on reconciliation •

Mark making

Activity: Playing with pressure, texture, line, scale and design to get a feel for techniques. Sharing and discussing outcomes from experimentation, and looking at the different ways to make a mark •

Materials and process

Activity: Experimenting with colour, collage, rubbings, cut outs and surface application •

Group work

Activity: Time to play with technique and have fun with creating a visual story •

Reflection

Activity: Reflection and voluntary classroom discussion on experiences and outcomes •

Conclusion

Activity: Pack up
