THE RECORD

For the Record..... The friendly face of rebuilding u by Mark Alexander, Selwyn Central councillor

Earthquakes and recovery have been on my mind as, at present, my home’s earthquake damage is finally being repaired. My family and I were fortunate that our home didn’t suffer major damage in any of the earthquakes. We had to remove a chimney in September 2010 and install a new flue for our log burner, but our home has been weathertight suffering only cosmetic damage. Like many we’ve had our personal dramas with EQC, trying to establish what damage has been done and what is needed to do to fix the damage. We’ve patiently waited our turn for repairs and now have six weeks living in another house while ours is fixed. There are many in our district for which their earthquake story hasn’t been as easy and is not yet over. Many have lost homes and moved into new or different homes. Others are still battling EQC and their insurers to get their damaged homes fixed or a fair

pay out. Still others will forever carry the physical and emotional scars from the earthquakes. Let’s not forget them. Some of our community facilities have yet to be repaired or replaced. Consultation around some of these decisions is currently taking place. Many of Selwyn’s new residents have moved into our district because of the earthquakes, either replacing damaged homes or coming for employment in the post-earthquake Canterbury. The census figures released in October confirm the Selwyn district was growing prior to the earthquakes and the growth has continued or accelerated in the last three years. It’s pleasing to report that newer residents say they find we are a welcoming community and they are pleased to have come to live in Selwyn.

Beware the White Tail Dear Sir, I would like to bring to your attention, especially now we are coming in to summer, White Tail spiders are in Darfield. These are square of body with white a spot on the abdomen. Just now they are juvenile, but can grow to a good size and bite, causing a painful injury. Seek medical advice. D. C. These dark grey spiders, which are Australian imports, are 12– 17mm long and readily recognised by their elongated body form and a distinctive white patch on the end of the abdomen. Pale patches are present on the sides of the abdomen in juveniles but these fade in adults. Where found: Their preferred habitat is under dry bark and plants but will often be seen inside houses, where they look for shelter from the light, after hunting at night. The spider often hides in clothing, especially if it is left lying around on the floor. Food: These nocturnal hunting spiders are unusual because they feed only on other spiders, preferring the grey house spiders, which build their zigzag webs on the outside of houses, on fences and car mirrors.
