Mark Burkill from Sport Northland said last year 6,500 older adults in Northland reported a significant injury from falling to ACC. “The goal here is to encourage more people into more classes and collectively make a bigger difference to the health of older adults,” said Mark. The classes focus on improving lower body and core strength as well as balance. Jean O’Neill attends the classes run by Sport Northland’s community sport team leader, Roxanne Kelly in Dargaville. After a fall last year she received a full hip replacement and returned to classes 10 weeks later. “I do feel the classes have helped me, I had to miss a term and then returned. At the start I wasn’t doing many of the exercises but Roxanne has been helpful and encouraging along the way,” said Jean. “I think it’s imperative to do these classes and you’ve got to have the willpower to do it.” Mark and the Sport Northland team hope to have a minimum

of 10 certified senior health classes within Kaipara over the next three years. He also wants to offer training or support to community members interested in giving up an hour of their time to lead future classes in the area. “My goal over the next few
