Booming house values in Dargaville “These are mostly investors attracted to the lower value, higher yield investment properties of Dargaville township. An increase in retirees in the Dargaville market is also evident, mainly driving the top end of the market.

“There have been more buyers relocating to the area from Auckland due to more affordable prices.

Dargaville is still affordable enough for investors to be able to come up with a 40% deposit whereas some other areas are now out of reach.”

The report has come as no surprise to local Ray White realtor, Jean Johnson.

“Sales are still going well in Dargaville both residential and lifestyle, also sections.

“We have had a mixture of local purchasers and Auckland people.

Properties are not on the market long at the moment as there is a shortage,” she said.

She said sometimes this meant they would have more than one offer on a home.

Over on the east coast Mr Ujdur said the market had been marginally increasing over past year but values were starting to level off. p “As the median value for homes in the area becomes more unaffordable for secondary homes, we have noticed value levels levelling out over the last year. Sales volume has also dropped notably for the last year by close to half from 2015/16 and 2014/15 levels.

Warehouse robbery guilty plea A man charged with multiple offences in the armed robbery of The Warehouse in Dargaville in which more than $242,000 worth of jewellery and nearly $28,000 in cash and cheques was stolen, has admitted the offence.

Kaipara Anderson,18, appeared in the Whangarei District Court on five charges of kidnapping, and charges of aggravated robbery and possession of cannabis for supply.

He was remanded for sentence on October 26.

Two other people allegedly involved in the robbery offences are still before the court and cannot be named.

Anderson and an alleged accomplice broke into The Warehouse armed with .22 calibre rifle, scissors and a screwdriver.

Five night staff were held up and tied with electrical cord and held in a toilet facility, while a duty manager was forced to open a safe from which the money and jewellery was taken, as well as personal property from the manager.

The staff members freed themselves shortly after the incident and contacted police.

Anderson claimed he was paid $400 by an unknown person to help with the aggravated robbery. None of the stolen cash has been recovered.

Settling in new surroundings In it for the long haul u by Joanna Manson

John Pickworth and Donna Shadick moved to the outskirts of Dargaville at the end of last year after more than a decade based at Tomarata, and Lifestyler caught up with them to see how they had found the switch from east to west Kaipara.

Cherie and Chris Frost moved to Kaipara with their two children, Luke 16 and Grace 11, in March. Again, the Kaipara Lifestyler gets to know some of our latest residents.

Donna says: “The shift has been great, we really like it and have really settled in.”

The couple are often busy with the Dargaville Arts Association, and Donna has taken up learning an instrument with the local ukulele group.

“There’s always an opportunity to do things with people around here — everyone’s so friendly and very welcoming in a group,” she says.

“We like to drive around all the rural roads so we’ve had a really good look around the area now. We’ve been to Donnelly’s Crossing, Waipoua Forest and up to Rawene — it’s really lovely driving up through the kauri forest.”

After living on a lifestyle block in rural South Auckland for the last 14 years “we just decided that we needed a change of pace and change of lifestyle for us and the children,” said Cherie.

“It’s much better value up here so we sold everything up and headed north.

We just knew we wanted to get out of Auckland.”

They ended up finding the seven-acre Wai Hou Oma lodge, opposite the Kai Iwi Lakes and haven’t looked back. They have also just bought a new block of land — 30 acres at Mamaranui to raise a few stock on.

“We’re really pleased to be here and we’re finding everybody very welcoming,”

Husband John says they are both “excited” about the completion of Donna’s new art studio.

“We’ve done some renovations and improvements around the house and found the local trades people to be excellent and also very helpful,” says John.

Over this time they have also realised “the simple convenience of the township makes life easy — we have everything we need here and you can park anywhere.”

If you’re thinking about making the move their advice to those pondering the decision is to “just do it — we’re very happy with our decision.” ¢

She says having spent the last few years in the area has given them an idea of the services Dargaville wants and how best to facilitate the families needs.

Chris is an electrician by trade and is currently working at Silver Fern Farms, doing maintenance.

The couple had both been to the Kai Iwi Lakes before, with Cherie coming as a child in the school holidays. They never imagined they’d someday live next to them.

“The plan is to upgrade the lodges as we can afford to do it. We’ve got big plans for the place. We are here for the long haul.” ¢

The Dargaville Anglican Church has launched its annual fundraising calendar featuring the work of local photographers and enthusiasts.

The video was launched at Event Cinemas in Whangarei to 200 people, including community health workers, police and supporters, as part of the Te Ara Oranga anti Meth campaign which was launched the same day.

The pilot, which has been given $3 million in funding includes a variety of resources, such as billboards, posters, a social media video, and has seen a seven-strong police team selected as part of the pilot.

Singer-songwriters Taniora Tauariki and Hone Winder-Murray from Te Ha Oranga star in the video, and took the inspirational words in the song of ‘Let’s

Make A Change’ around Northland earlier this year, and with the support of communities such as Dargaville, Kaikohe, Hokianga and Whangarei produced the video.

“For me it was nice to see, I really enjoyed being apart of a community driven project. The most important thing was that it was very reassuring for us being on the front line to help educate whanau on what it means to be well.

Music has so much healing in it and it’s refreshing to use this medium to help initiate change,” said Te Ha Oranga Dargaville clinical administrator, Hone Winder-Murray. ¢

A newly-signed partnership between the Northland Regional Council and the Kiwi Coast Trust has formally consolidated an existing strong working relationship between the pair.

Kiwi Coast is a community collaborative linking a variety of landcare and pest control projects stretching from Mangawhai to the Aupouri Peninsula in the Far North. Coordinator Ngaire Tyson says the partnership signed on September 4 builds on more than 20 years of successful kiwi recovery work.

“Under the new partnership, Kiwi Coast

will bring a cost-effective, communitydriven model for enhancing Northland ecosystems already contributing more than $500,000 worth of volunteer labour annually.”

Regional council chairman Bill Shepherd says the council will provide a number of resources to support Kiwi Coast.

“We already contribute roughly $300,000 a year and under the new agreement, we’ll now make an additional contribution of almost $90,000 annually over the next five years. ¢

Northland Kenpo students and instructors attended the annual Kenpo Championships held in Porirua, Wellington, with nearly all 23 students coming away with medals. Among them were 19 students from Dargaville.

Samuel Davidson, the youngest and newest entrant, achieved medals in several events. Dayne Fowlie, competing for the final time in this age group, took out the overall senior grand champion.

Grace Christey won most events she entered in as well as becoming the overall pre-teen champion. Courtney Crichton-Mason won the younger age group weapons division section.

Croydon Weight, came away with gold in three sections and with a reserve champion title. “I was definitely not expecting three golds, it felt amazing.

I want to make a massive shout out to my instructor Ron Mason and his wife Gail, for the training they have done with me,” said Croydon.

Kenpo instructor Ron Mason said: “All 23 displayed wonderful attitudes at the tournament including assisting and supporting not only each other but also students from the Wellington region.

Much credit must go to the parents who provided transport, encouragement, expectations of being the best you can be, and who supported the Kenpo School through this attitude.” ¢

Poet and hip hop artist Micah Bournes from Long Beach, California, visited Dargaville High School recently after English teacher Cara Woods had heard him speak at events in the past and invited him to town.

He shared two of his spoken poems with senior students, ‘Native Tongue’ and ‘Mowgli’s Confession’, which deal with race and mental health, before speaking to them about using creative writing as a way to find a personal identity and explore issues in their lives.

He also held a poetry workshop with selected year 12 and 13 students, encouraging them to use a unique way to look at where they come from.

“The students engaged really well with Micah and in what he had to share,” said Cara. Micah said: “I had never even heard of the town, but I

Great short walk

Young author celebrates

A self-chosen school holiday activity has turned into published reality for young Paparoa schoolgirl, Brooke Healey, just as she prepares to celebrate her ninth birthday.

Some of New Zealand’s finest tracks are set to become part of a new network of Great Short and Great Day walks which includes Kaipara’s Mangawhai Cliff walk.

Tourism Minister Paula Bennett and Conservation Minister Maggie Barry announced the news last week.

The Great Day and Great Short Walks, developed by DOC in partnership with Tourism New Zealand are an expansion of the highly successful Great Walks’ brand aimed at promoting more of the walking experiences available across the country.

“This is a chance to draw more tourists off the beaten track and enable more communities to benefit

from increasing visitor numbers,” Ms Bennett says. The Mangawhai cliff walk has been chosen from DOC’s best and most spectacular tracks.

“While many of these chosen walks are already top quality, others will seek investment to make them truly world-class, with new facilities such as toilets or improved track surfaces,” says Ms Barry.

The new networks will be officially launched by DOC and Tourism New Zealand in October this year. ¢

She has had the story she wrote back when she was just seven, published and printed in sparkling colour.

Entitled Peacock and the Swan, Brooke pencilled in the story on A4 pages. Now, with family support, it is on the market — a tale of derring do and adventure involving the title characters and a wandering penguin from the South Pole, with her original illustrations finetuned by her artist uncle.

The children’s tale was placed with JOP Print in Whangarei.

“Of course, we love printing children’s books,” said sales executive Hazel Oliver. “But then when we found out

the author was only eight years old, we were even more keen to help out.

“Initially we were going to print and bind this book saddle stitched — with a stapled spine, but because we have the machinery and capability to perfect bind on site, we decided this was definitely a great cause to make this amazing book shine even more with a high quality finish “We are proud to say we helped to make her publishing dream a reality.”

Filmmaker Gaylene Preston came to Dargaville and ANZAC Theatre’s screening of her latest documentary, My Year With Helen, to answer audience questions.

A community day was held at the Dargaville Community Hall last Friday afternoon to promote International Literacy Day.

The documentary follows Helen Clark around the world, as she attempts to become the United Nations’ first ever female Secretary-General, while also carrying out her work as administrator of the United Nations Development Program. After wanting to make a documentary about Helen for years, “it came about when I was feeling depressed about the state of the world in 2015.

“So I called Helen to find out what she was doing. It was only after filming started that I realised the possibility of Helen making a bid for SecretaryGeneral. It took two years to make, including all the post-production work,” said Gaylene.

Tsunami siren testing A quick and healthy new option ADVERTORIAL

Tsunami sirens throughout Northland will be tested on the morning of September 24 as part of twice-yearly checks which coincide with the beginning and end of daylight saving.

The siren network from Te Hapua in the north to Mangawhai in the south and Ruawai in the west will sound twice, once at 9.20am for 10 minutes and again at 10am for just 30 seconds.

The sirens will be monitored for any faults.

Northland already has more tsunami sirens than any other region in the country, and new sirens continue to be added following last November’s Kaikoura earthquake and the consequent tsunami warning.

Victoria Randall, spokesperson for the Northland Civil Defence Emergency Management Group, says a total of 18 new sirens have

been installed since last September.

The most recent new additions are in Mangawhai, Waikaraka, Onerahi and Ruakaka.

In the event of a genuine tsunami warning, the sirens are an indicator to seek further information from sources such as the Northland Civil Defence Facebook page, smartphone alerts, TV and radio.

“If people are on the coast and experience a long or strong earthquake, change in sea level or loud or unusual noises coming from the sea, they should move inland or to high ground without waiting for further information,” Ms Randall says. ¢

Mayor’s Message Interim CE

Peter Tynan is on the job and off to a very strong start. He intends to live in Mangawhai and spend three days in the Dargaville office and two at Mangawhai which should work well and keep him connected to our district.

We have shortlisted to three search firms to assist us to find a permanent CE. The Remuneration Committee will interview the three then make a decision. The whole process will take us into the New Year. The time to have a new person on the job is very dependent on any notice period that the successful applicant will be required to give.

Roading

The biggest single issue we have. We will shortly get our roading committees up and running. Thanks to all of those who have put their names forward.

Getting "on the ground" advice to management will certainly be helpful.

As many of you are farming and it’s a tough period at the moment I have delayed the first meetings until on farm conditions improve and you will have the time to attend. Our roading network is longer than the drive to Wellington and back which causes some huge logistical issues around oversight.

We have completed the assessment of the subsurface of the unsealed network. That work has identified that 20% of our roads "are down to the clay", so working to remedy that is going to be a very large cost. That will not be a surprise to some. This ongoing and very trying wet weather is our current

challenge. We currently have 222 slips on our network which amongst other things will test our budget.

Mangawhai Community Plan

We will be holding two consultation meetings on Saturday 30 September and Saturday 07 October at 2pm at the Mangawhai Club, Molesworth Drive, to gain your feedback. I am aware the local group who delivered the plan consulted throughout their process however Council is still required to seek feedback.

The plan largely remains unchanged although the priority areas around spending have been changed in their order.

Dargaville Town Plan

We only received a couple of expressions of interest in being involved in the group that was mooted so will not proceed with that model. We are currently looking at some good historic work that has been done to ensure we "are not re‑inventing the wheel" and have a further think about how to make progress.

Annual Plan (last financial year’s performance)

The Audit, Risk and Finance Committee will have met in Mangawhai by the time you have read this. We will need to sign off last financial year’s result, which was a positive one. Before year end I wish to hold an AGM of Council where we can report very directly to you on our performance for the last year. You will be advised of the time/place but will probably be at a district mid‑point, such as Maungaturoto.

The former premises of Harvest Blue Cafe on Molesworth Drive in Mangawhai have been transformed into Ivy Bistro by new owners Emma Mason and Kris Malcolm.

The familiar faces to the Mangawhai hospitality scene officially opened the new hot spot after three weeks of renovations on August 1.

Emma who is also front of house manager said business has been good so far with many locals being “really supportive.” Kris has taken back his spot as head chef.

“We are doing some dishes a little bit differently using gels and broth.”

Mark Burkill from Sport Northland said last year 6,500 older adults in Northland reported a significant injury from falling to ACC. “The goal here is to encourage more people into more classes and collectively make a bigger difference to the health of older adults,” said Mark.

We recommend improved early access to elective surgery through the demonstration of a positive benefit/ cost ratio.

We need to be very aware that there’s a growing number of people entering

their retirement years who have not been able to put very much aside. Our long established low wage economy and unregulated market forces in housing have made it impossible for many people to provide adequately for retirement, and those living alone and solely dependent on national superannuation are among the most vulnerable. Has the government a responsibility to provide more social housing in the Kaipara area?

Kaipara Grey Power took this issue to the Dargaville Community Development Board resulting in progress being made for another retirement village in Dargaville and in fact has a representative on the board.

Among the other expenses faced by many retired people is oral health as anyone one who has recently been to the dentist will know. Unlike other health services dentistry is not subsidised by the Ministry of Health. There is a need to bridge the gap between general and oral health. An unanswered question is the cost to the health system of untreated oral disease. This is of interest to Grey

Spring is a time of riotous growth, and a time for wading in amongst it with outdoor power equipment scattering a chaff of greenery.

But how best to attack your own slice of backyard jungle? When it comes to power trimmers and brush cutters, it’s all about picking the right weapon for the task at hand.

There’s such a thing as too much power when it comes to delicate tasks such as trimming around yard features, trees, pergolas and ornamental plants.

The savage blades of a full-blown brushcutter know no mercy, and they’ll slash through your hardy perennials just as readily as they lop off weeds.

A lighter machine means ease of operation in tight spots, and if the thin, whippy polymer line of a power trimmer comes up against bricks or concrete it can easily be replenished from the internal store with a ‘bump’ of the head.

Ideally, these machines — which often have a curved profile, containing a flexible driveshaft — are used to tidy and perfectly groom areas where the brute force of a mower can’t reach.

Expecting them to be able to whack through tougher stuff could be asking for more than their small and economical engines can offer, putting strain on moving parts. There’s a whole bigger class of machine for that — the true brushcutter.

While these metal-bladed tools can scythe down thicker vegetation, once again it’s worth noting that they are not all about finesse. The steel blades of a brushcutter striking concrete can damage both the obstruction and the blades, or even cause dangerous chips to fly off wildly.

The natural domain of the brush cutter is in slashing down overgrowth in the open field.

And to do so they come with the option of several different blades.

There’s even the final option of a ‘buzz saw’ blade to slice through the trunks of saplings.

Due to the array of sizes, power ratings and blade attachments on offer, the best bet for any prospective buyer is to talk in detail with your local small engines’ specialist about what will suit your needs.

Picking the right tool will mean less need for repairs and maintenance and guarantee years of solid use. One universal tip — in power equipment — you get very much what you pay for.

Pick a reputable brand with a technician and dealership close by, so that it’s easy to source consumables, new blades, lubricants and safety gear. ¢

In the world of automobiles, the German brands are often celebrated for their solid and reliable engineering. But when it comes to the pinnacle of power and precision, people look over the alps and into northern Italy, where a certain Mr Enzo Ferrari built his famous supercar brand.

It’s a long way from the farm to the racetrack — the interesting case of Lamborghini, who started life as tractor manufacturers — aside. But Landini, one of Italy’s foremost agricultural machinery brands, is nevertheless taking on the best of the continent with a range that’s more blue than red.

The sirens will sound twice – at 9.20am for 10 minutes and again at 10am for just 30 seconds.

The twice-yearly checks are carried out at the beginning and end of daylight saving.

A message will also be sent to users of the free Red Cross Hazard app.
