Do you want taxidermy supplies, tabletop war games miniatures, ballet shoes or vintage comic books? Of course — there’s a store just for you. In our smaller provincial towns, there’s less room for hyper specialisation. Just as in the days of the early settlers (when your barber was likely also your dentist, and your feed and seed store sold appliances), businesses have taken to branching out beyond what it says on the sign, to offer a full range of services to satisfy the needs of the community. That is doubly true in this era of easy access to goods via the internet because as many of us have discovered
to our annoyance, products are easy to click on and deliver, but service can’t be posted via courier. People still want to be able to talk to an expert when it comes to things like repairs around the home or upgrades to the car. They still want recourse to a repair if things go wrong and they certainly appreciate advice (and a good look at the product) before they buy. Hence a modern town like Dargaville, Maungaturoto or Mangawhai often offers more than newcomers may imagine. You’ll find that some of the things you may have assumed were only available via a drive north to Whangarei
or south to Auckland are available right here. Some of this is due to businesses consolidating several skills in one building, and some are purely by public demand. Hence you’ll find many surprising extras available throughout our local main streets, which may not have their own prominent signage. Even some long-term residents may not know all the new and interesting things on offer without a closer look at what’s available. Not to mention that if you buy locally, you support the local economy, create jobs and strengthen the whole community. ¢
