While rail infrastructure will be a work in progress for many months to come, Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters confirmed in Whangarei last Friday night that his election promise of Northport can now be fulfilled along with an economic shot in the arm for the region in jobs and business opportunities.

He told local government and business leaders: “In summary, the message is this; rail is back on track. It is a massive forward step for regional development and economic growth, especially for Northland.

“It’s a pleasure today to confirm that the geotechnical and engineering investigation into the Marsden Point spur line is fully complete, and KiwiRail is making progress with plans to revitalise rail in Northland. The survey found that the improvements needed to bring the 100-year-old year Northland line up to standard are relatively straight-forward.

“The spur line and the Northland line can be done by KiwiRail and other New Zealand companies. Completing this investigation, giving us a clear idea of where we stand is important for when the Upper North Island Supply Chain Study and the Ministry of Transport’s plan for rail investment are finalised around September.

“As KiwiRail’s chief executive Greg Miller likes to tell people; 30,000 container loads leave Northland by road each year for the ports of Auckland and Tauranga — and rail is missing a

huge opportunity to take some of that freight.”

Northland shares its rail future with the rest of the country. The one billion dollar package includes: $331m to go towards addressing legacy issues. The Kaipara District Council parks team was contacted over concerns a slumping branch on the Moreton Bay fig could take root, with the tree effectively transplanting itself into a colony.

“KDC staff contacted Jon Redfern from Arborlab, who is well experienced with this tree. Jon visited the site and his response is below,” said KDC manager, Hamish Watson.

“The slumping has occurred to a number of branches throughout the canopy.

“I couldn’t tell you one way or another if we will see a catastrophic/ sudden complete failure of one of these branches.

“As a precaution, we should isolate the dripline of the tree. We should prune some weight off the ends of the

branches and where possible, install some significant props. Also, try and stop kids climbing on the branches and using it as a ‘seesaw’ — maybe a permanent fence.

“If trimming is appropriate I would look at taking 20% of the end of branches to reduce the weight.

Installation of props should be undertaken where practical.”

Mr Watson said council staff are liaising with Arborlab and contractor, Northland Treeworks, to meet on site, planning on having work done by the end of June. ¢

p Northern Wairoa Country Women’s Club president Lyn Harnett and patroness June Tattersall are preparing for a 60-year milestone

Established by Jean Massey and Val Webb in 1959, a local version of a successful idea implemented all across rural New Zealand in varied forms, the Northern Wairoa Country Women’s Club connected rural ladies, often the wives of farmers, with others who understood their busy schedules and who could provide comradeship and a break from the sometimes isolating job of running a productive farming enterprise. The club currently has two daughters of

those inaugural members in leading positions, and several original members still counted among its ranks. The 60year commemorative luncheon will be a chance to reminisce and share stories of many good times, and both the president and patroness invite members past and present to attend, as well as extending a warm welcome to new members. Mastitis Testing Month

A

ntibiotics revolutionised medicine in the 20th century, but almost 100 years later we are facing a global antimicrobial resistance (AMR) crisis. The cause has been mainly overuse and misuse of antimicrobials in humans, animals and plants.

Mastitis is a painful and costly inflammatory condition common in dairy cows often caused by a bacterial infection and treated with broad-spectrum antibiotics. The veterinary industry is taking a proactive approach with the rise of AMR and new guidelines on the use of antibiotics have been developed. Antibiotics should only be used if a bacterial infection is present and only the most narrow spectrum antibiotic that is indicated should be used. This means that we need to know what bacteria is causing the infection in every case before treatment is started, or as soon as possible after starting treatment. This can be achieved by having a Mastatest machine on farm that gives results in 22 hours, currently the fastest accurate test available. This test is just as good as a culture, but takes away the hassle of bringing samples into the clinic. Talk to us if you want to be ahead of the game and make better treatment decisions.

A recent measles alert in Kaipara has placed the community spotlight on the disease with cases in Northland, Bay of Plenty, Lakes, Capital and Coast and Southern DHB areas along with outbreaks in Auckland, Waikato and Canterbury.

A patient at the newly opened Paparoa Medical Centre last Friday who just asked to be known as ‘Pam’ was one of the early visitors following the complete refurbishment of the former Otamatea Council chambers into a fullfledged health centre, operated by Coast to Coast Health Care.

“All thanks to the Paparoa Medical Society,” said Pam. “I have a health issue, and I have had to find my way out of town for help for the past year.

Pleased that’s over.”

Paparoa Medical Society chair, Graham Taylor explained during the extensive renovation to bring the building up to standard that ceilings had to be taken down for the interior to be fire-rated. The sewage system was upgraded to a standard that is resource compliant.

Other work involved extensive rewiring to cope with medical equipment, and in all, it took a year until the building

reopened for business. As well as the medical centre, it also houses the Paparoa Community library to one side.

Much of the $350,000 required was largely raised by local community efforts.

Coast to Coast Health now advises that the centre focusses on core family medicine while utilising more advanced services by referral.

“The Paparoa clinic team are available on Tuesday and Friday mornings and include GP, nurse and receptionist plus a chronic care nurse clinic once a month for CVD risk, diabetes and management of long term conditions.”

Practice nursing services include immunisation, basic accident management, wound care, regular health screening as well as chronic care nursing. The scale of costs advertised includes under 14 yrs free with those between 14 and 17 at $12, and thereafter $18. ¢

A total of 160 measles cases across the country were confirmed as of May 28, and 65 people with measles had been hospitalised.

The disease is highly contagious, affecting both children and adults — and as medical authorities point out, easily preventable.

‘Two doses of measles vaccine provides the most effective protection.

After one dose of the MMR vaccine, about 95 per cent of people are protected. After two doses, more than 99 per cent of people are protected,’ says the Ministry of Health.

Primary and secondary school teachers were out on strike last Wednesday, May 29, as part of the largest education sector industrial action in New Zealand history, involving more than 50,000 educators. They were joined in Dargaville by local teachers

Members of the Post Primary Teachers Association and the New Zealand Education Institute voted to strike for better working conditions, remuneration and education system reform.

A vocal group of more than 50 teachers waved flags and carried placards in central Dargaville and were met with audible support from passing motorists and townspeople.

Secretary of the local branch of the NZEI, Regina Nengerman, says she

stands by the message printed on her banner: ‘It’s time our children get the education they deserve’.

“Teaching positions have, on average, a five-year turnover. People are leaving the profession, and the numbers of people going into teaching careers are down forty per cent.

“We need to make this a career, which people want to commit to.

It’s an investment in the future of our country.” ¢

improvement. Iwi Te Roroa took home the top award in the environmental leadership category for their work in the Waipoua forest.

Mark Vincent attended the awards ceremony on May 23 and said: ‘We were lucky enough to come away with a highly commended award for our category, which is pretty pleasing for a group; which has only been operating for about five years. It is recognition for the work carried out by lots of people in our area’.

The NRC congratulated all entrants and winners for their hard work in protecting the natural environment. ¢

Council to host governance training workshops

Fairy tern action group formed u by Paul Campbell

As part of continuing work to help communities thrive the Kaipara District Council community team have arranged three workshops in association with the LEAD Centre for Not for Profit Governance and Leadership.

The three workshops aim to equip people/volunteers with the skills to build successful community organisations and projects.

The events are led by Sandy Thompson, director and CEO of the LEAD Centre.

A belief in the power of strong communities has led Sandy to pursue a career as a trainer, consultant and coach in the community and not for profit sector. She has been working and volunteering in the not for profit sector since she was a volunteer youth leader in Whangarei in the 1970s.

The course is free, and we encourage at least two people to represent your organisation, if possible, to help transfer what you learn on the day into day-to-day practice for your group.

The course will look at the roles of not for profits boards and committees, what work they do, responsibilities of members, common issues and governance cycles.

Their habitat is limited to sheltered estuaries and harbours north of Auckland and south of, and including, Whangarei Harbour. Successful breeding is currently limited to four sites: Waipu sandspit, Mangawhai sandspit, Pakiri River mouth and Papakanui sandspit.

“With only six pairs attempting to nest last season, and a population of approximately 40 birds, the plight of the fairy tern/tara iti is critical,” says Tara iti Recovery Group leader, Troy Makan.

“The Department of Conservation is collaborating with the newly-established group, which includes Ngati Whatua O Kaipara, Patuharakeke Te Iwi and Te Uri o Hau. It will be supported with

dedicated DOC staff and increased research. A 2017 review made 22 recommendations, which form the basis of the latest recovery programme.

Fifteen recommendations are being implemented with the remaining seven to be progressed under the leadership of the recovery group.

The new recovery programme involves developing new techniques and management strategies.

There is already significant on the ground management of the populations at the breeding and roosting sites including predator control, protecting nesting sites with fencing, protection and monitoring to keep the breeding areas undisturbed. ¢

This is definitely the weather for taking a hot lunch back to work, or grabbing an easy hot dinner where all of the hard work has been done by somebody else in the kitchen! Takeaways and even ‘fast’ food doesn’t mean unhealthy any more, and you’ll find here some tasty and quick options for the whole family.

Many of our favourite quick bites to eat come from the traditions of street food and marketplace vendors, adapted to become modern classics.

Take the pizza, which has come down in history from a flatbread cooked on battle shields by the Persian armies who fought the 300 Spartans. It’s a concept mentioned in ancient epic story the Aeneid, but it only really took off when Italian immigrants to New York added tomato paste and stringy cheese to make street food.

It’s a similar story with the hot dog, which was inspired by just this trend. Charles Feltman, a New Yorker of German ancestry, saw his Italian neighbours enjoying financial success

with pizza, and thought of his own country’s favourite snack — spicy sausages. Initially, his idea was to offer customers gloves with which to eat the piping hot snacks, but too many pairs were stolen. So he struck on putting the sausage in a bun, and by 1870 his ‘dachshunds’ (named for the long, low little German dog) were a hit. The name got shortened to ‘hot dogs’ by vendors yelling this easier term to potential customers on the street.

Perhaps the biggest development in fast food has been deep frying, which has brought us many treats over the years — the origins of this method far outdated the arrival of potatoes to make chips. Apocryphally, deep frying was

invented by mistake by Greek soldiers during a siege. Having boiled a cauldron of olive oil to drive away invaders, the soldiers would not allow the fortress cook to let it cool down while he used

the fireplace for a pot of stew. So the cook threw vegetables into the oil, and history was made. For the record, it was a Roman chef, Apicius, who invented the fried chicken, about 400 years later. ¢

Here are some ideas to make winter a season for fun rather than frustration.

The start of June means that duck season is only halfway done, and while many keen shooters head out to enjoy every weekend they can in the wilderness, there are plenty of others who make an occasion of opening weekend and then gravitate toward other pursuits. Take advantage of the lower numbers of shooters in the second half of the season, and your reward will not just be a hunting break with friends, but also the sight of sunrise over the wetlands, and (hopefully) a duck dinner.

While you’re there, ask about some fishing equipment too. Winter fishing, you may ask? Well, there’s a strong apocryphal case that colder weather may get those gurnard biting in the harbour, and if nothing else, the cold, clear and crisp days which the northern winter is famous for make for some stunning scenery on the surf beaches.

While it’s a most definitive off season further south with truly icy conditions, here in the Kaipara there are options for the canny angler to make fishing a year-round passion.

While Ford’s Ranger continues to smash out sales records and gain accolades, other car makers have been quick to pick up on the popularity of the pick-up. That even includes a marque usually associated more with speed and finesse than mud and gravel, Mercedes Benz.

Their introduction to the ute market, the X Class, caused waves not just because of its distinctive styling and comfy interior, but also a price which makes it one of the most affordable ways to get behind the three-pointed star badge. Not cheap compared to other utes, but certainly more able to tackle tough terrain than an S Class, and less pricey than the army-tough G-Wagon.

The initial model was the X250d, following Mercedes’ time-honoured tradition of giving its vehicles coded numbers instead of names. That translated to an X for ute, 250 for the

size of its four-cylinder engine and a d for diesel fuel. The new six-cylinder version is hence called the X350d, and it comes with a big advantage over its smaller sibling, in terms of delivering 258 horsepower and a healthy 550 Newton metres of torque to boost its towing capacity to 3,500kg with a braked trailer. Power delivery is smooth rather than brutal, giving the X Class the unhurried feel of a traditional German four-door rather than a snorting big twotonne diesel truck.

The natural competitor for this upmarket ute is the Volkswagen

Amarok, and there’s a lot the two have in common, including, now, a six-pot turbo diesel. The Benz may just edge out the V-dub when it comes to off-road performance, with its locking hubs and slightly better ground clearance, but it’s price where Mercedes customers may feel a slight sting for extras.

That is still a very inexpensive way to pilot one of Germany’s finest (compare the top of the range AMG G63, an SUV worth as much as a small house), but the options list is enticing, long and potentially irresistible to customise the X350d as your own. ¢

Tagging with technology The importance of correct tagging of livestock animals has been thrown into stark relief due to the ongoing M bovis containment and eradication program, but the usefulness of a quick, accurate means of tracking animals can never be overstated.

To make things easier, NAIT, the organisation tasked with coordinating National Animal Identification and Tracking, rolled out a new digital mapping system early this year. It uses a computer interface with Land Information New Zealand data to assign every NAIT registered farm with a number, helping match individual animals to a specific property. Multiple locations comprising a single agricultural enterprise within a 10-kilometre radius can all share the same NAIT number.

However, when moving a herd, it’s not possible to uplift this number and carry it with you. Farmers engaged in Gypsy week movements will have been pre-appraised of this, but there are also a large number of lifestyle block owners who maintain small numbers of stock, and they may as yet be out of the loop. As this is the first Gypsy

day following the roll-out of the digital mapping initiative, NAIT authorities wish to remind all livestock owners and managers of two vital things to do.

Firstly, if you are moving existing, tagged livestock onto a new farm, please visit the NAIT website at ospri. co.nz/our-programmes/nait to register a new number for your new location.

It’s easy to pinpoint where you are on the digital map. Secondly, if a herd is remaining in place, but a new Person In Control of Animals is taking charge, they, too, need to register. When they do, they will have access to extensive NAIT records of animal movements at their new location.

With this new approach, it will be even easier than before to coordinate animal movements and ensure that the livestock sector remains healthy and profitable. ¢
