Living the dream by Ayla Miller
Entrepreneur, technology enthusiast, radio announcer and narrator Ian Miller finally had enough of the congestion in Auckland and is now living out his retirement dream a few years early in Paparoa. Ian had always said he would retire to the Kaipara and although he isn’t officially retired, he leapt at the chance to move north and says technology now means rural New Zealand is as connected as ever. “As far as I’m concerned it has some of the most stunning landscapes I have ever seen and that is indisputable —
undeniable. I continually get a buzz from it.” Ian was first exposed to radio journalism when he started working as a tea boy for Radio Hauraki at the age of 17. “That’s where I got my first taste for it,” he said. After moving to Australia with his then wife, he pursued a career in printing engineering and later built

When his wife was pregnant with their first child they moved back to New Zealand and Ian was offered a job as a journalist for Radio Hauraki. “I had done a radio course when I was in Sydney and because I associated with a lot of journalists when I came back to New Zealand, they said I could work for them as a journalist.” He went on to work for several other radio stations, edited a few magazines specialising in technology, and had a

These days he is still using his broadcasting and communication skills from his home in Paparoa, and keeps busy working as a narrator for audiobooks. “The New Zealand accent is quite neutral and highly sought after as there aren’t many narrators in the country,” he said. He also runs a business specialising in leather holsters for portable technology and smartphones.
