Northpower has investigated the building of the UFB fibre network in the Kaipara and Whangarei districts and it is estimated to cost $120 million with a further $100 million to acquire easements to hang one extra wire from existing poles. “This law change could

remove a whole lot of cost because as it currently stands we would have to apply for easement which is a doubling of paperwork and a doubling of cost.

This law change will take away the need for that paperwork,” said Northpower public affairs manager Steve Macmillan.

Dargaville business owner Helen Cairns of Good Life Soap is the first to receive a Ka Pai Kaipara business award for successfully reducing waste produced by her business as much as possible.

The award is part of the Love Kaipara project and founding director Victoria del la Varis has begun working with Kaipara firms to offer guidance on how businesses can save costs and protect the environment by reducing their waste.

Fishing contest attracts crowds  by Ayla Miller

A crowd of keen anglers and families gathered on the weekend to take part in the annual Tinopai Fishing Contest, raising around $11,000–12,000 for the students of Tinopai School.

Tinopai School principal Sonya Kaihe estimated around 400–500 people attended the contest and the accompanying fair on the school grounds.

“It was one of the best days we have had in a long time. We had entertainment and carnival rides, and people were so generous with their donations.

“We had lots of fun and the hangi was beautiful. There were a lot of sharks out in the harbour, people were saying.

“Everybody donated their fish back as well, so we had a great fish auction afterwards. It has become a really family oriented day for everyone.”

Sonya says contestants travelled from

all over the country to take part in the competition.

“The generosity of all sponsors was overwhelming and humbling.”

The heaviest fish caught on the day was a 6.92 kilogram snapper hooked by Matthew Bell, which secured him first place in the Inner Harbour category.

Mat Sim caught the heaviest snapper in the outer harbour category weighing in at 6.44 kilograms.

The kids’ sprat competition was won by Alex Saint for his catch of 0.97 kilograms. Alex won a PS4 and games valued at around $500 and donated by Stuart Moulding from Civiltrain Ltd. 

A total fire ban is in effect across Kaipara and wider Northland from January 9.

The ban follows suspicious fires on conservation land at Pouto Peninsula and Kellys Bay. A 20-year-old man has been charged with arson following a fire at Kellys Bay as part of the ongoing police investigation. More than 120 children took part in the Mangawhai Boating and Fishing Club’s ‘Take a kid fishing’ day last weekend.

Showcasing the benefits of circus to families is the goal behind the Northland Circus Festival at the Waipoua Campground and this year organisers were pleased to see an increase in family groups making the most of the opportunity.

An estimated 150 participants travelled from near and far to take part in the 11th festival.

“We were very impressed with the turnout and the number of families who came along as that’s ideally what we want to see more of,” said Kumarani Productions manager Abbe Clark.

The festival included workshops by highly trained professionals who volunteer their time to share  The Korean Teeter Board at work during the Northland their skills.

The sun was shining and the water glistening as children, armed with hand lines and fishing rods, lined the Mangawhai estuary on Saturday.

President of the Mangawhai Boating and Fishing Club, Lloyd Redfern, said the turnout for the event was the best the club had ever had.

“Numbers are up significantly since last year. We want to encourage junior

anglers — it was a magnificent day,” he said. Mr Redfern was also pleasantly surprised to see many of the children using the ‘catch and release’ technique saying it was good to see juniors knew the message behind this idea.

Catches on the day varied from starfish to kahawai, to sightings of a passing stingray. The event resurfaced three years ago due to popular demand. 

Maungatutoto kauri carver, 62 year-old Elliott Freer, had hepatitis C and liver cancer. Then a donor organ was found, a world-first drug administered, and today he is back in his Kaipara studio workshop.

Dargaville High School’s head girl for 2017, Jasmine Rae, and Harriet Spoelstra from Ruawai, are appearing in a Northland Youth Theatre production coming to Dargaville.

As he was going into theatre for the transplant, he was asked if he wanted to trial a new drug Epclusa to combat his hepatitis C, under Professor Ed Gane at the New Zealand Liver Transplant Unit. This made him “the first in the world to get the treatment straight after having a liver transplant.”

“I thought — my chances of survival are 50/50 so yeah, go for it,” said Elliott.

Dargaville woman and full time globe-trotter Chelsea Cookson wants to help others to travel the world on a budget with her website titled Wanderers and Dreamers.

The New World Food and Wine Mixed Open attracted a full field of some 170 participants recently at the Mangawhai golf course.

The site includes a blog about her and her partner Matthews’ travels and includes information about keeping fit and healthy on the road.

It also includes photographs by Chelsea and information about how to live and work overseas.

“I really want to share our story so that people can get inspiration and do a similar thing.

“We have had really cool jobs come up while we have been travelling. You meet so many people and I believe work opportunities will come up if you are open to them.”

The young couple will travel to Portugal next for a job spanning the summer season.

Entrepreneur, technology enthusiast, radio announcer and narrator Ian Miller finally had enough of the congestion in Auckland and is now living out his retirement dream a few years early in Paparoa.

Ian had always said he would retire to the Kaipara and although he isn’t officially retired, he leapt at the chance to move north and says technology now means rural New Zealand is as connected as ever.

“As far as I’m concerned it has some of the most stunning landscapes I have ever seen and that is indisputable —

undeniable. I continually get a buzz from it.”

Ian was first exposed to radio journalism when he started working as a tea boy for Radio Hauraki at the age of 17. “That’s where I got my first taste for it,” he said. After moving to Australia with his then wife, he pursued a career in printing engineering and later built

A window into Kaipara and Kiwi history  by Andy Bryenton

An exhibition with a difference has opened at the Thirsty Tui in Paparoa. This selection of photographs chronicles the early days of the Kaipara as well as iconic images of places further afield, captured by the lens of one of the nation’s pioneering photographic artists.

As well as fitting in with the refurbished hotel and restaurant’s Kiwiana — art deco theme, the art of the lens is also a particular passion for Thirsty Tui owner Pam Goode and her husband Chris Williams. The pair are professional photographers in their own right, with a business in Auckland dedicated to the artform. So when the chance came to decorate the Tui with images of the area’s past, Pam took the opportunity to open up some of the Kaipara’s stories for her customers.

After all, her profession behind the lens began while her father was the publican in Paparoa and she borrowed his vintage Box Brownie camera.

From shots of the old-time Kauri logging trade through to summers of picnics and fishing, these photos tell a story of hard work, good times — and big catches. Of particular interest is a shot of a gigantic great white shark hauled up by its tailfin to be weighed.

The likely lads gathered around may

not have known it at the time, but the monster from the deep was the biggest ever caught in this part of the world, a record which still stands. Local family photographer Karen Weber deserves credit for many of the candid shots tracking life by the big harbour — but there is layer upon layer of history on display in this carefully chosen collection, with generous additions from the Kauri Museum, local photo albums and more.

The photo display has already proven a great talking point, encouraging visitors and locals to get together and start conversations. It’s also brought back plenty of memories for those who remember holidays  Part of the Weber family collection, this snapshot of the ‘one that didn’t get away’ captures a timeless and visits to the north from their fishing moment childhood — and who now return with their own families. Pam intends preserving snapshots of history carefully to expand the collection, framing and chosen with a pro photographer’s eye. 

Ford’s new Escape sports utility vehicle carries the name of an old favourite, but offers technology which would have staggered belief in the heyday of its well-remembered namesake. Just how good is the replacement for the Ford Kuga in the blue oval line-up for 2017?

Stylistically, the Escape picks up the design cues of the Ford family with an aggressive new front end, giving it the crisp lines and angles common to the Ranger at the top end of the size spectrum and the Fiesta ST down in the compact class.

That same sense of definitive purpose and logic prevails within, with comfortable leather seats, a tactile, thick and sporty steering wheel and all the controls in just the right place — including the big touch screen which commands the ‘brains’ of Ford’s SYNC III infotainment system. It’s a screen which gets a workout in other ways,

too, as this is also where the Escape makes parking a matter of laserguided precision. As well as providing a generously-sized window for the colour reversing camera, the touch screen commands the Escape’s self-parking procedure, a ballet of technology in motion which can place you neatly in a parallel or side-by-side spot without so much as a finger on the wheel.

This is impressive in a small runabout, but in an SUV which can swallow up a full-sized Kiwi bloke in the back seat with legroom to spare — and which has a cargo capacity that could lug major items of furniture — it’s some

North American off-road giant Can-Am has struck upon a winning combination with their big 650cc outlander quad bike.

It’s a formula that’s proven as successful as the classic front-engine rear-drive layout of the classic sports car — a big, torquey V-twin Rotax engine in the middle pushing out 62 horsepower, on-demand four-wheel drive and rugged, long-travel suspension. The bigger dimensions of the Outlander 650 compared to smaller quads have done nothing to diminish its nimble handling or its ability to go just about anywhere on the farm, but they have added plenty of spaces to customise the machine for hard work. In fact, there’s very little this power quad can’t lug — fencing gear, spray tools, feed — even the farm dog.

The addition of a winch from the factory

shows how serious Can-Am is about putting their big yellow four-wheeler to work. It’s proven so popular that the 2017 model, soon to hit New Zealand, is basically a slight re-working of an already impressive package.

Kiwi customisations of the American machine typically include galvanised bull bars, big mudflaps and chunkier tyres for the mud, as well as a range of racks, rails, containers and boxes to tote everything from tools to tackle.

Hitting the sweet spot between sheer power and fuel economy, it seems that the Outlander 650 recipe will remain just as tasty, so long as there’s hard work to do around the farm. 

The art of ‘powerhooping’ has become a popular and versatile exercise across the country, as a unique way to get back into shape, and instructor Nicci Mulholland-Dobbs has brought the experience to Mangawhai.

“I personally discovered powerhooping just over a year ago and have lost 15 kilograms simply by hooping daily,” said Nicci.

“Ladies in Mangawhai are loving the classes. There are many stories of people powerhooping to start their journey of becoming fit.”

Nicci started with powerhooping five minutes a day. The hoop is weighted and the exercise strengthens your core, back and much more, and it can be used by the young adult to very mature person and can be used anywhere.

She hooped at her house alone and decided to become an instructor and help others to become fit and get back into shape. “I lived in Whangarei and ran classes there, then I moved

to Mangawhai five months ago and think people here will really enjoy the programme.

“I wasn’t hugely overweight but once I saw the results I was getting I started doing other things like walking and running, and for the first time in my life I look in the mirror and like my body and what I see.

“I have abs and it is all from hooping, it gives a full body workout.” No fancy gym gear is required — just comfy exercise clothes. Powerhooping classes are held at the Mangawhai Domain Hall on Tuesdays and Thursdays at various times.
