Room needed for SPCA drop-in centre  by Joanne Speechly

Whangarei SPCA is on the look-out for a suitable space in Dargaville to establish a drop-in centre, which will run monthly clinics similar to those currently operating in Otangarei, Ruakaka and Onerahi. The SPCA is a charity, receiving no government or council funding, so a room is required free of charge, preferably in a building shared by other businesses or service providers. “I’ll only need the room once a month for three hours, from 10am until 1pm. It would need to have a toilet, a safe or enclosed area inside to check and worm cats and a covered area outside to check the dogs in all weather,” says Whangarei SPCA inspector/  Whangarei SPCA inspector/educator, Rachael Wyatt, educator, Rachael Wyatt. applying flea treatment at the Otangarei Drop-In Centre “We offer free worm and flea treatments, basic health checks, worm and flea treatments.”If you have advice on pet care and applications a room that would be suitable, then for the de-sexing programme, whereby Rachael is keen to hear from you now. community service card holders can Phone the SPCA on 09 438 9161 get their pets de-sexed for a donation. or email rachael@whangareispca. ANZAC weekend art fest  by Joanne Speechly

Aratapu Tavern will host the second annual Aratapu Arts Festival on Sunday, April 27 and organisers are keen to hear from people who would like to get involved.

 Last year, the first Aratapu Arts Festival was a great success

The festival grew out of an idea proposed by local singer, Anna Cutts. “Essentially, it started from a conversation about hosting an afternoon of opera, wine and cheese tasting — but it quickly grew into something else!” says Aratapu Tavern co-owner, Donice Morris. “And as it turned out, last year’s festival was really successful and the artists sold a lot of their work, so we’ll keep it going on an annual basis for now.” Donice says the interpretation of ‘art’ is loosely defined and they are keen to hear from people who are interested in having a presence at the festival. There

is no charge for booth space and tables will be provided on a first come, first served basis. “We are interested in all forms of art. Last year we had the Lions club ladies with their Christmas decorations, Te Kopuru and Dargaville art clubs, handmade jewellery and books, greeting cards and face painting. “We’ll set up the Garden Bar about 11am and continue through until 5pm — unless people are selling so much that they want to keep going!” Contact Donice at to book a booth or for more information on 09 439 5923 or email arataputavern@xtra.co.nz. 

 Dargaville Little Theatre will come alive from this Thursday, as the small riverside performing arts venue becomes the scene for a Las Vegas style ‘cocktail theatre’, incorporating cool mixed drinks and canapes with songs from the great musical shows and from the charts. Director of ‘A Little bit Musical’ Anna Cutts says she is proud of how her troupe of performers have honed their skills in preparation, and that it will be an unmissable night for all.
