 Northlanders took the chance on Saturday to get hot and sweaty, have lots of fun and then walk away with a pack of kumara. They were taking part in the Kumara Triathlon organised by Sport Northland. More than 200 people took part, with one entrant coming from Sydney. The event at the Kai Iwi Lakes gave adults the choice of a 700m swim or 1.5km kayak, followed by a 20km cycle and an 9.6km run. While everyone was tired at the end, they all went home happy with kumara supplied by the Northern Wairoa Vegetable Growers Association.

Commissioners at their monthly meeting last week unanimously adopted a recommendation to award Mr Ruru a 2% pay rise plus a oneoff $15,000 payment. Chairman of commissioners John Robertson says Mr Ruru has done a great job in difficult circumstances and says the one-off payment is well deserved. “We wanted to acknowledge his extraordinary

performance. He worked extraordinarily long hours through the last year getting Kaipara District Council into good shape and preparing the Local Bill to be introduced into Parliament. He’s worked hard in preparing the council’s response to the legal challenge from the Mangawhai Ratepayers and Residents Association.“ According to the council’s annual report for 2012/13

 The Tebbutt family’s Ronald McDonald House’s Adopt a Room fundraising effort has received so much community support, that they have now surpassed their original goal of $5,239. “So far we’re up to $6,729 and counting,” says Erica Tebbutt, whose eight year old son Joseph requires regular in-patient care at Starship Children’s Hospital . “As a family, we want to say a big, big thank you to everyone who has contributed.”

 The sun was out on Saturday as the Ruawai Lions held their annual auction. Blue skies greeted scores of locals and some from further afield who descended on the Kaipara Kumara forecourt in search of bargains. Among the items going under the hammer were a spa pool, a piano, furniture, a motor bike, bicycles, building materials and firewood. Lions secretary Dorothy Simpson says the money raised will be used for community projects, including a youth exchange programme with Methven Lions and an annual Christmas function for senior citizens.

 World renowned accordionist Kevin Friedrich wowed a large and appreciative crowd when he performed at the Lighthouse in Dargaville. Mr Friedrich was born and brought up in Dargaville.

Although he has lived in New York for the last 25 years, Mr Friedrich regularly comes home to Dargaville to perform. Last month’s concert was a chance for him to show off his skill on a unique kauri accordion made by Finnish artisan Aaro Luukinen.

The movies are back in Kaiwaka after a three-year gap.

A public meeting last week is likely to lead to a strategy that could mean more job opportunities for Kaipara’s young people.

The meeting was organised by Dargaville businessman Andrew Wade and Kaipara District Council community facilitator Darlene Lang.

Those present included Dargaville employers, representatives of training organisations and social service groups who recognised there was disconnect between the skills young people have and skills local employers need, resulting in many young people leaving the district to find jobs.

The meeting asked Sonja King to act as a coordinator and prepare a plan.

Ms King says she plans to meet employers in the next couple of weeks to find out their needs. She will then look at what training opportunities are required so young people can get those skills.

“I’ll then develop a plan so that young people are trained with the skills they require. That means they can stay and have good opportunities here.”

Ms King says it could take up to six months to develop a plan. Implementing it will require cooperation of training organisations such as NorthTec. All

courses will then have to be NZQA accredited. Ms King says she also intends working with Work and Income and local high schools. Dargaville High had been invited to the meeting but was not represented.

She says while there have been a number of local initiatives to improve job training in the area, most had been isolated and fragmented. “People need to know what others are doing. We need to work collaboratively.” 

The town’s War Memorial Hall is now a venue for Hollywood blockbusters, meaning locals no longer have to travel to Dargaville or Whangarei to experience the magic of the big screen.

Kaiwaka Community Cinema Trust chairman Ad Clarijs says the hall had been used as a cinema since it opened in 1952. But it used old film technology which became redundant when cinemas and distributors went digital.

“When the hall was given back to the community we got money from the Kaipara District Council to do repairs.

We then decided to go digital.”

He said the hall committee had built up a bit of capital. That was used to buy

new chairs and a new sound system.

“The sound system is just magic. It is 5.1-surround-sound. You feel the sound. We have to set it up every time.

It’s kept in a separate lockable room.

But it can be used for presentations.”

The cinema reopened in mid December and currently shows movies on the first and third Fridays of every month, with a matinee on one Sunday a month. Ticket prices are reasonable, at $10 for adults and $5 for children. This Sunday at 2pm there is a special 50th anniversary screening of Mary Poppins.

But because the cinema uses Bluray technology, it has to wait until movies are released on Blu-ray. 

Ms Johnson, who owns and operates Ray White Dargaville, received a premier award for 2013 at Ray White’s national awards function attended by more than 800 people at Auckland’s SkyCity last month.

Ms Johnson has been selling real estate in the northern Wairoa for 20 years and has led the team at Ray White Dargaville for the last 12 years.

She came to Dargaville in 1993 after a period selling in the south Auckland suburbs of Papatoetoe and Howick. “I love the lifestyle. It’s so relaxed. People are very relaxed.

Dargaville’s a relaxed country town.”

The awards evening featured top performers from all over New Zealand.

“To get an award for the whole of New Zealand in Dargaville is unheard of. It’s an honour for Dargaville.”

The awards recognise consistency in individual performance.

Ray White New Zealand chief executive Carey Smith said the company had improved sales performance by 21% in the last 12 months, despite difficult market conditions. “It was significant to note the Elite and Premier performers lifted their overall turnover by 28% which shows the best people in the market are being recognised and appointed by vendors increasingly as each year goes on.”

Ms Johnson is also involved in a number of community activities and is currently president of the Northern Wairoa Lions Club. 

Tutor Jarrod McKelvie says the 13 level two students have been painting the inside of the town’s St John’s building.

“It’s got a hall, a kitchen, a couple of bedrooms and toilets.

It’s a big job — at least a month’s work.”

He says the building is looking its age and needed a fresh coat of paint. “It’s pretty shabby. Water’s been getting in where the roof has been leaking.”

The students have done much more than flip their brushes across the walls. “We’ve sprayed anti-mould on the ceiling. They’ve filled in cracks in the walls and replastered them. They’ve revarnished the floorboards. They now look a little better.

“The work is giving students practical experience that will be of great value in their future careers. And by getting involved in the community, it gives them a sense of achievement.”

He says while the community groups that benefit from the students’ work pay for materials, Carter’s in Maungaturoto has supplied paint at cost price. 

Whangarei SPCA is on the look-out for a suitable space in Dargaville to establish a drop-in centre, which will run monthly clinics similar to those currently operating in Otangarei, Ruakaka and Onerahi.

The SPCA is a charity, receiving no government or council funding, so a room is required free of charge, preferably in a building shared by other businesses or service providers.

“I’ll only need the room once a month for three hours, from 10am until 1pm. Aratapu Tavern will host the second annual Aratapu Arts Festival on Sunday, April 27 and organisers are keen to hear from people who would like to get involved.

 Last year, the first Aratapu Arts Festival was a great success

The festival grew out of an idea proposed by local singer, Anna Cutts.

“Essentially, it started from a conversation about hosting an afternoon of opera, wine and cheese tasting — but it quickly grew into something else!” says Aratapu Tavern co-owner, Donice Morris. “And as it turned out, last year’s festival was really successful and the artists sold a lot of their work, so we’ll keep it going on an annual basis for now.”

Donice says the interpretation of ‘art’ is loosely defined and they are keen to hear from people who are interested in having a presence at the festival. There

is no charge for booth space and tables will be provided on a first come, first served basis.

“We are interested in all forms of art. Last year we had the Lions club ladies with their Christmas decorations, Te Kopuru and Dargaville art clubs, handmade jewellery and books, greeting cards and face painting.

“We’ll set up the Garden Bar about 11am and continue through until 5pm — unless people are selling so much that they want to keep going!”

The Dargaville races scheduled for Friday April 4 have been moved to Ruakaka after the racing club decided dry conditions had made its track too dangerous for horses.

Racing club secretary Basil Smith says the summer drought had caused cracks between three and four inches wide to open up on the track.

“If a horse at full pace goes into one of those cracks, it will crumble.”

In Dargaville, the local hub is gearing up for a busy 2014 with an exciting range of services and programmes on offer.

“There are 13 hubs placed around New Zealand and these have been set up in the areas identified as having the most need for services for families with children aged naught to six,” says Hub manager, Lynette Matthews. “By need, we mean support and information families can tap into in terms of health, education and social services.

“The Hub does not replace existing services. We aim to strengthen the coordination of services and improve access for families, therefore providing the best results for children.”

Upcoming workshops and programmes include HIPPY, the Incredible Years programme and Protecting the Hearts. The goal of Early Years Service Hubs is to help ensure that all children have the best start in life and be supported to reach their full potential.

Tips for Eliminating Wheat…

We see many people eliminating wheat, dairy, refined sugar, and gluten from their diets due to gut, allergy, and general health issues.

This can be quite overwhelming, especially if you’ve been advised to eliminate certain foods, but don’t understand what to replace them with, and why.

As we head toward winter, and desire heavier, more satisfying foods, it’s easy to slip back into old patterns, when it all seems too hard.

Rice comes in many varieties and is versatile,

making many dishes from hot meals and cold salads, to deserts. Quinoa with black and red rice makes a nice blend as a base for many dishes. Buckwheat is gluten free also, and gives a different texture to dishes.

These grains, and many more are also used ground, as flours for baking. Food gums can be added to replace the gluten found in wheat, oat, spelt & rye flours.

Spelt flour is a great alternative to modern wheat flour, for those not going gluten free but wanting to avoid modern wheat products.

We have all these things and more in store, as well as recipe books and advice on how best to use all the different foods for a healthy diet.

Perseverance is the key with any new venture.

It does get easier, and the pantry gradually fills up with the ingredients you need if you add one or two new items per week.

There’s a reason that — despite the advances made every year in mobile telephone technology — certain industries stick with the tried-and-true communication solution of CB and RT radio.

On the eve of netball season, Otamatea Netball Club is trying to get off to a good start under difficult circumstances.

The Northern Wairoa Country Music Club has a new home in Dargaville’s Pono Lodge.

 Netball season starts on Friday and Otamatea Netball Club needs your vote now so they can purchase essential netball gear.

The Maungaturoto club lost eight teams worth of equipment on January 18 this year, when a fire destroyed the home in which the gear was being stored. However, the club is determined that their girls should have the best season they can and have applied to ANZ Courtside for a custom grant — and whether they get the grant, is down to community support.

“We have applied for an ANZ grant to be able to buy netballs, first aid kits, gear bags, drink bottle holders, training bibs, training equipment and ball pumps because we’ve actually had to start from scratch, we lost everything,” says president of Otamatea Netball Club, Tina Ball, whose house was destroyed in the fire.

“There are several rounds of voting, the first of which ends on April 5, and all people need to do is register on the website to vote. The registration’s not hard and once registered, people can

vote everyday for our club.“The decision as to who gets a grant is not necessarily based on who gets the most votes but rather who has the most support. For example if we were in a bigger area, they’d expect us to get more support but because we are in a smaller area, they will take that into consideration and also look at how many votes we get per day.”

Otamatea Netball Club oversees five senior and three junior teams, which play in the Netball Rodney competition in Wellsford.

The ANZ Grant Scheme will be awarding a total of $100,000 in grants to the most deserving teams, players and fans.

The historic lodge building had been on the market, as declining membership meant the masons were struggling to meet operating and maintenance costs.

But the decision of the country music club to move in provides the lodge with an additional source of income, while the club avoids the prospect of becoming homeless.

Club treasurer and past president Ken Foster says the club had met in the old band hall for the last 20 years. But their lease came under threat when Kaipara District Council decided to sell the land.

Mangawhai summer fun

LETTER TO THE EDITOR To whom it may concern, We, the Residents/Ratepayers of Te Kopuru have gathered together after the Council Draft meeting held at the Te Kopuru Coronation Hall on Tuesday 25th March 2014, with concerns about the scheduled work to be performed in the Te Kopuru district. The ratepayers of Te Kopuru have been puzzled for years now, there seems to have been an overabundance of rate increases over the past 5 years and some of the residents are adamant that they have been ripped off and want some answers.

Where has the money gone that the ratepayers have been paying for the past 5 years, as there has been

no work conducted in the township. It is therefore our decision to formally execute this submission.

It is our request for the scheduled work on the drains around the Te Kopuru district plus the sewage and drainage fees to be deferred along with the 8% rate increase until the council can show us and explain the breakdown of the expenses (for work that has been carried out in the Te Kopuru district), included in the breakdown we want to see the amount of rates collected for those 5 years namely 2009-2013, from there we might be able to move forward.

 The seaside community of Mangawhai was buzzing over the weekend as thousands of outsiders joined locals for the Mangawhai Walking Weekend and the Mangawhai Food and Wine Festival.

Beautiful sunny weather meant both events went ahead without a hitch. Organiser Trish Whyte says the food and wine festival was sold out. More than 900 people danced the afternoon away with the Mermaids Dance Band. She says the event is one of the highlights of the Mangawhai summer calendar. “The sun shone and with plenty of delicious food and wine to enjoy, a perfect afternoon was had by all.”

In the interim, Helinorth operated under New Plymouth based firm Precision Helicopters Ltd. This temporary measure was necessary in order to satisfy the New Zealand Civil Aviation Authority requirements with the absence of Barry from its team.

In December 2013, Helinorth gained the resource and backup in order to allow the company to part ways with Precision Helicopters and now operate and trade under its original name Helinorth.

Allan Jessop says, “I have heard all sorts of stories out on the street anywhere from, the company has gone broke, has no helicopters, has given it all up, to Helinorth has sold out. This perception and rumour is understandable as some farmers and other clients must be somewhat confused having seen Helinorth disappear and Precision Helicopters appear in local advertising etc.

“However these rumours are totally untrue as the company is still owned and operated by himself and his wife Kirsty and is simply operating as normal.”

Helinorth’s original Whangarei operation is now permanently based at the Dargaville Airfield with renovations currently underway in order to extend its current hangar to be able to accommodate various sized helicopters which the company utilises.

Allan says, “Now that we are permanently based in the Kaipara, we hope to gain support and backing from the local farming community by providing a great

competitively priced service to all of our customers.

Helinorth also operates from Wellsford to as far as Cape Reinga covering all of the North in between and will still continue to provide the same service as have done in the past to our Northland customers.

“Gorse and scrub season is nearing its end with only one month to go. Helinorth is still taking bookings but advise if you wish to have gorse/scrub sprayed then make your booking fast.

“Pasture spraying season is just around the corner and so we will be gearing up for this shortly.

“We have designed all of our equipment in order to make life as simple and easy as possible for our customers. This includes supply and delivery of all chemical to and from the job leaving no waste and unused chemical behind. This means our customers only pay for the exact amount of chemical required for the job. We also offer our chemical at wholesale prices which are very hard to beat along with free delivery.

“Helinorth also has its own fully equipped Fertiliser Truck designed to cart bulk fertiliser to the job and deliver it to the helicopter without the use of our customer’s farm machinery or labour. This allows our customers to continue with their daily farm duties without interruptions.”
