NSLIC/NSELRED SOUTHEAST SULAWESI CHAMPIONS Processed Fishery Products Group 'Maju Jaya', Kendari City Rosnani is the chairperson of the processed fishery product group 'Maju Jaya' in Sambuli Village, Nambo Subdistrict, Kendari City. Together with two members of the group, Rustin and Aini, Rosnani is very keen on identifying business opportunities in the fisheries sector. Although every day they are busy with household activities, this group manages to produce processed fish products to supplement the family income. Beforehand, Rosnani worked at the Kendari Fishery Harbor but stop working in 2018. Rosnani and Rustin used to start a banana chips business but their products can not compete with similar products in the market due to limited raw materials, not having a business license and poor product packaging. Finding the business opportunities in the fishery processing sector and the abundant availability of raw materials such as shrimp, fish and crab shell in Nambo Sub-district, Rosnani together with Aini and Rustin established a processed fishery products group called ‘Maju Jaya’ in November 2019.
FISHERIES POTENTIAL IN KENDARI CITY According to the 'Southeast Sulawesi in Figures 2019' published by the Southeast Sulawesi Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the capture fisheries production of Kendari City in 2017 was 21.371 tonnes (4th rank in the province) and increased to 22.406 tonnes in 2018 (3rd rank after and Buton and South Buton. As the capital of the province with the availability of support facilities, Kendari becomes a very potential market for marine and fishery commodities. The facilities and infrastructure supporting the fisheries s sector are also sufficiently available for investment development such as container ports, electricity, transportation, hotel, warehouse, fish auction place (TPI), Kendari Ocean Fishery Port (PPS) which is the centre of an integrated fishing industry in eastern Indonesia, particularly in the province. The availability of PPS and TPI attract the fishing vessels to unload at the PPS and TPI in Kendari city. Based on the results of the fishery commodities study conducted by NSLIC/NSELRED with the Kendari Local Economic Development Working Group and experts from Haluoleo University, one of the recommendations of the study is the provision of alternative markets for fishery products, especially for rotten captures that decreased its economic value or can not be sold at all. The study also showed that the generally the fish is rotten by 20-25% before arriving at the TPI or PPS. Another potential in Kendari City, especially in the Abeli Sub-district and Nambo Sub-district is the mini-plant processing for crabs and shrimp where the processed products such as shrimp heads and crab shells are wasted.

"We are very happy since joining the activities and training of NSLIC/NSELRED because it has helped us to gain increased knowledge and capacity in the production of processed fish, using wasted raw materials. We are also very grateful to the NSLIC/NSELRED project because it has facilitated and provided us with the equipment to produce fish flour as well as crab and shrimp crackers. The equipment and knowledge have been helpful in improving our production process and the income of the group members."
