uantanamo Bay residents will have many opportunities to enjoy Independence Day weekend Morale, Welfare and Recreation-style. MWR is offering several different activities branching across all of its departments, including: j Sports tournaments including adult T-ball, mini-soccer and tennis. j An Independence Day 10K run j “Something Distant” concerts on July 1-2, including dinner for purchase. j “Carbon Leaf” will perform at the Tiki Bar right before “Airiel Down,” who is stopping at Guantanamo after completing a brief Caribbean tour. “Airiel Down” performed at the Winter Olympics. “We’re definitely encouraging community to come out and view

fireworks, listen to the music and enjoy the holiday as a community,” said Amiee MacDonnell, MWR community activities director. “The concerts are for all-ages.” MacDonnell said MWR has been planning for the Fourth of July weekend since February. “A lot of different departments have come together to help make this weekend happen,” said MacDonnell. “We selected Pyro Shows to come down and put on the show for us, and partnered with Navy Entertainment and Armed Forces Entertainment to make the concerts happen.” MWR hopes to create a safe, fun environment for all base residents. “The variety of activities this weekend offers something for everyone,” said MacDonnell. “I imagine people will have more time than usual with the holiday weekend, and MWR wanted to make sure there was a variety of stuff happening all weekend long to keep people entertained.”

Heed posted safety signs at beaches and look out for one another. According to the Naval Safety Center, safety hazards commonly seen during summer months are swimming without a buddy, drunken driving and heat-related injuries.
