Several makers were on hand Sept. 21 during the announcement of the inaugural Maker Faire Pittsburgh, which will be held at Allegheny Center’s Nova Place Oct. 10-11. By Justin Criado The site formerly known as the Allegheny Center Mall has been undergoing a major makeover as Faros Properties is transforming the 1.2 million-squarefoot office and parking complex in to a tech-friendly campus. The new Nova Place will hold its first major event at the Allegheny Center property Oct. 10-11 as it was announced during an event Sept. 21 the inaugural Maker Faire Pittsburgh will setup shop there. Over 200 inventors, crafters and tech enthusiasts will be on-hand to show off their creativity and resourcefulness. w“It couldn’t be more fitting

that the first event at Nova Place is Maker Faire; an event known for creativity, artistic expression and ingenuity, things we fully embrace and hope to foster here at Nova Place,” Jeremy Leventhal, Faros managing partner, said. The fair will also be held at the Children’s Museum, Buhl Community Park and the former Carnegie Free Library of Allegheny. Mayor Bill Peduto was on hand to praise the fair and Nova Place. “What created this city was the combination between innovation and building things,” Peduto said. “(Maker Faire) brings together the ideas and innovation to change things. It puts it together with the ability to build it.

“What better place to have this Maker Faire than the place that’s redefining Pittsburgh.” An all-ages festival that’s billed as “part science fair, part county fair and part something entirely new,” Maker Faire Pittsburgh looks to draw around 10,000 people to the event. Some makers were on hand during the announcement event as a preview of what to expect. Maker Faire Pittsburgh is produced by the Children’s Museum under a license agreement with Maker Media, Inc. and in partnership with Faros Properties and Innovation Works.
