The annual report for North Shore Country Day serves as a comprehensive summary of the school’s yearly achievements, financial health and educational outcomes, recognizing the school’s generous donors and offering insights into the school’s progress and strategic direction.

I’m used to teaching history, not being a part of it, but this was the year when the extended Raider family carried us over the finish line of the North Shore Forevermore campaign, the largest in our school’s history. Through our Centennial celebration, through the pandemic, through thick and thin, our community showed up to support Annual Giving, the Benefit and the capital campaign.

As an independent school, we receive no tax or government support, so we have always relied on the generosity of our community for our needs. It was a handful of families in 1919 who provided the vision and resources to open NSCD, and it was 2,349 donors who gave during this campaign to ensure that our transformative education will remain vibrant forevermore.

We could not have achieved this milestone without the help of everyone in these pages, dozens of volunteers and the leadership of our campaign co-chairs, Tom Flickinger, Christina Self and Sharon Watrous.

On behalf of the students, faculty and staff here at school, thanks to each and every one of you who make this all possible.

Gratefully, Tom Flemma, Head of School

NORTH SHORE FOREVERMORE

A Historic Campaign, A Lasting Legacy

North Shore Country Day has always believed in the power of education to change lives. This year, that belief was demonstrated in extraordinary fashion with the successful completion of North Shore Forevermore, the largest and most ambitious fundraising effort in the school’s history.

Thanks to the generosity and vision of our community, the campaign raised more

than $41 million — a bold investment in our people, our program, our place and our perpetuity. This unprecedented achievement reflects an enduring commitment to the values and mission that have shaped North Shore for over a century.

“North Shore Forevermore is more than a milestone,” said Head of School Tom Flemma. "It showcases that our families believe so strongly in our school’s mission and future that they’ve generously contributed their philanthropic dollars in

support — a powerful show of confidence that strengthens us financially now and for generations to come. In turn, we are able to provide students with the tools, experiences and confidence to lead lives of purpose.”

The campaign’s impact is already visible across campus and will continue to ripple outward for generations.

PEOPLE

At the heart of North Shore is its people — the students and teachers whose daily work

brings the school’s mission to life. The campaign provided significant funding to support both.

• Eight new scholarships and funds were endowed, ensuring that deserving students will have access to a North Shore education for generations to come.

• Scholarships include supplemental support for essential experiences beyond tuition, so every student can fully participate in school life.

• Faculty and staff benefit from expanded professional development funding , keeping them at the forefront of their fields and enriching the classroom experience for every learner.

PROGRAM

The campaign fueled innovative programs designed to prepare students for a rapidly changing world, with a focus on both timeless values and forward-looking skills.

• Essential Skills: A curriculum intentionally crafted to develop critical and flexible thinking, creative problemsolving, confident collaboration, effective multimodal communication, and care for self and others — all rooted in our motto, “Live and Serve.”

• STEM: Expanded faculty and programming in science, robotics and math from junior kindergarten through 12th grade.

• Civil Discourse and Inclusion: Workshops and training for students and teachers on engaging respectfully with differing perspectives.

• Artificial Intelligence: Thoughtful integration of AI tools and education, ensuring students use emerging technology ethically and effectively.

PLACE

Transformative facility upgrades have created inspiring spaces where students can learn, discover and create.

• “Healthy Futures” transformed the

Mac Gym into the Mac McCarty Athletic Center, enhancing the athletic, fitness and wellness experience for all students, JK–12. In addition to a complete renovation and modernization of the classic gym, the project added 7,000 square feet of new spaces for gathering and training, including a student and spectator lounge, a functional fitness space and a state-ofthe-art athletic training facility.

• The redesigned Hall Library now serves as a vibrant hub for the entire school community.

• The Live+Serve Laboratory combines the best of a makerspace, laboratory and service-learning center — an inclusive JK–12 environment for innovation, creativity and collaboration.

PERPETUITY

The campaign strengthened the school’s financial foundation, ensuring stability and flexibility well into the future.

• $9.2 million in gifts and bequests were added to the endowment, supporting scholarships, programs and operational needs.

• New named funds and unrestricted dollars give the school the ability to adapt and innovate while staying true to its mission.

As North Shore Forevermore comes to a close, the sense of gratitude is profound. The campaign has already transformed our school — in classrooms, on stage, on the playing fields and in the lives of our graduates.

In a world that continues to change at a breathtaking pace, the skills, values and confidence instilled at North Shore are

more essential than ever. The legacy of this campaign will be felt not only in bricks and mortar, programs and endowments, but in the integrity, empathy and vision of the students who will lead the future.

THANK YOU FOR BEING PART OF THIS EXTRAORDINARY JOURNEY. YOUR GENEROSITY ENSURES THAT NORTH SHORE’S MISSION WILL ENDURE — FOREVERMORE.

"I wanted North Shore’s brightest students needing financial aid to have access to the same resources that were such a benefit to me."

— BOB KOPPLE ’61

"It may have looked like we were ’just’ playing sports, but the lessons Patrick McHugh taught me — grit, perseverance, discipline — have served me in all corners of my life. I know I am one of many who feel this way, and I couldn’t be happier to celebrate Coach McHugh and all he has built at NSCD.”

— MEERA SINHA ’02

"Our family’s decision to make a leadership gift to the campaign stems from a deep, two-generation connection to North Shore. From the classroom to the playing fields, we’ve experienced firsthand the lasting impact of a school that values excellence in every aspect of education. We believe it’s important that the school’s facilities continue to reflect the high standards and transformative experiences that shaped us. This gift is our way of honoring that legacy and ensuring that future generations benefit from the same inspiring environment that has meant so much to our family."

— SUSAN STONE, PARENT AND GRANDPARENT OF ALUMNI

"North Shore had the rare ability — and the sincere willingness — to honor each of our children’s individual learning styles. By emphasizing the whole person, the school met them where they were and supported them in their unique intellectual, emotional and social journeys. We could not be more grateful for the warmth and care they experienced at North Shore Country Day.”

Fueled by Hard Work and Community

EDGAR ROMERO ’25

When Edgar Romero ’25 arrived at North Shore Country Day, he could not have predicted how far he would come in just a few short years. This past December, Edgar learned he had been awarded a full four-year scholarship to Grinnell College through the QuestBridge National College Match program. This prestigious national award recognizes high-achieving students from low-income backgrounds, and Edgar’s story of determination, resilience and kindness exemplifies everything the program celebrates.

Thanks to the generosity and vision of our community, the campaign raised more than $41 million — a bold investment in our people, our program, our place and our perpetuity. This unprecedented achievement reflects an enduring commitment to the values and mission that have shaped North Shore for over a century.

“North Shore Forevermore is more than a milestone,” said Head of School Tom Flemma. "It showcases that our families believe so strongly in our school’s mission and future that they’ve generously contributed their philanthropic dollars in support — a powerful show of confidence that strengthens us financially now and for generations to come. In turn, we are able to provide students with the tools, experiences and confidence to lead lives of purpose.”

The campaign’s impact is already visible across campus and will continue to ripple outward for generations.

A RELENTLESS WORK ETHIC

For Edgar, the path to college began long before his QuestBridge application — it started when he chose to attend North Shore Country Day for high school. The decision to commute daily from North Chicago to join a new academic community was daunting, but he embraced the opportunity, made

possible by generous scholarship support from donors who believe that every student deserves access to an excellent education.

Getting to school each day required extraordinary commitment. Because his father had to be at work early, he often dropped Edgar off at the Starbucks near the Highland Park Metra station around 4 a.m., where he would study until it was time to head to campus. Without internet access at home, Edgar relied on local libraries and coffee shops to complete homework and prepare for class. “The staff there, they all knew me,” Edgar recalled. “They didn’t mind that I got there so early — they even let me come in before they officially opened.”

Growing up in North Chicago, Edgar was no stranger to challenges. In a community where college wasn’t often discussed, he resolved to chart a different path — not just for himself but as a beacon of possibility for his younger siblings. “I wanted to show them that despite financial difficulties, you can go to college,” he said.

His early years at North Shore were marked by transition. Starting during a year of hybrid learning and limited extracurricular activities made it difficult to find his place. “Not having a community was the hardest part,” he said. “Not being able to run track, not being able to see my classmates, not being able to have that support — it was really hard.”

But Edgar’s persistence paid off. He embraced the rigorous curriculum, built meaningful relationships with peers, and leaned on the support of teachers who believed in him. He credited Athletic Director Patrick McHugh for encouraging his love of running and helping him see himself as an athlete. His English teacher, David Grossman, continually pushed him to work harder. “He would always tell me, ’You’ve got this,’ no matter what it was,”

Edgar said with a laugh. “He really taught me what it meant to be a good student.”

His academic journey wasn’t without hardship. There was a time when Edgar had no heat in his home, making it difficult to sleep at night. His grandparents provided assistance for food, and when his water and gas were shut off, he used the showers in the Mac Gym. Still, he never stopped showing up — in class, on the track and in the community.

“Edgar’s work ethic is impeccable,” said Head of Upper School Brian Frederick. “He sees challenges as opportunities to grow, and he understands the importance of perseverance, even when it may initially feel overwhelming.”

A CARING AND INCLUSIVE SPIRIT

Beyond his academic achievements, Edgar was known for his kindness and inclusivity. Whether in the classroom, on the track and cross country teams, or as a member of the Latinx affinity group, Edgar fostered community wherever he went. “He went out of his way to make everyone feel valued and included,” Brian noted.

His French teacher, Jeff Hutter, echoed this sentiment, recounting how Edgar supported classmates during group projects and displayed resilience during their Interim trip to St. Malo, France. When Edgar’s luggage was delayed — a stressful beginning to his first international trip — he remained calm and positive, showing the same patience that had carried him through more significant life challenges. “Throughout the trip, Edgar was an extraordinary community member, checking in on his friends and maintaining an open-minded and positive attitude, even in times of exhaustion or stress,” Jeff added. Edgar credited his father for instilling those values in him and his two siblings. Throughout his life, his dad had always been his role model and biggest support,

modeling hard work and encouraging kindness and generosity. “He really defined for me what it means to be a young man,” Edgar said. “I remember a time when the only money he had was in his pocket and it was supposed to be for his own dinner, but he gave it to someone else who needed it more. That sums up who my dad is and why I look up to him so much.”

A BRIGHT FUTURE

Edgar remembered the day he found out he’d been awarded the QuestBridge scholarship vividly. “I was about to eat lunch when I checked my application status,” he said. “My two friends were standing next to me, and I remember being in shock. I was so worried about college, but seeing that ’Congratulations’ screen with the confetti was an overwhelming relief.”

The scholarship, which covers the full cost of attendance — including tuition, housing and travel expenses — was life-changing for Edgar and his family. It represented the culmination of years of hard work and the promise of a brighter future. “For my siblings, I hope this inspires them to pursue their own opportunities,” he said.

At Grinnell, Edgar plans to study computer science — a passion sparked by his grandfather’s love of tinkering with devices — and he hopes to become a software engineer someday. “This scholarship taught me to dream big,” Edgar said. “It showed me that anything is possible.”

He applied to 15 colleges during his senior year, and North Shore’s college counseling team supported him every step of the way — from essays and applications to finding financial aid resources. “I couldn’t have done it without them,” Edgar said.

“This school has been amazing,” he added. “I’ve learned so much about who I am as a person from North Shore, and I hope other students can do the same.”

ROOTED IN GRATITUDE A Heritage Story:

NORTH SHORE HAS GIVEN ME SO MUCH THROUGHOUT MY LIFE THAT I FELT COMPELLED TO INCLUDE THE SCHOOL IN MY ESTATE PLANNING. AS I HAVE TOLD MANY PEOPLE, INCLUDING HEAD OF SCHOOL TOM FLEMMA AND FELLOW MEMBERS OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES, THE VALUE OF A NSCD EDUCATION BECOMES MORE EVIDENT THE OLDER I GET.

The self-confidence and willingness to pursue professional and personal aspirations are qualities NSCD instilled in us long before we were old enough to recognize the intent. Back then, we thought going on field trips, singing in chorus or playing sports was just part of the fun of being a North Shore student. Each of these activities shaped me in ways I couldn’t see at the time. Only now can I fully appreciate the value of such a well-rounded “whole person” approach to the North Shore experience. I use the word “experience" intentionally. The word “education” might limit the focus to North Shore’s excellent academics, but it doesn’t capture the transformative moments that happen outside of the classroom.

We didn’t just “show up” and do school — we all became part of the community, which persists to this day. Serving as a class representative has kept me connected to classmates as well as coordinate and host gatherings, including our 45th reunion this fall. This shared history, in and out of the classroom, is something difficult to describe to anyone who hasn’t had the privilege of being part of North Shore.

During my time as trustee and board chair, I was deeply impressed by current students’ ability to balance rigorous academics with exploring their passions and discovering who they are as people. I’ve also had the chance to give back by speaking with students about how North Shore shaped my life. In a discussion with 11th grade science students,

I shared how a term paper on glaucoma written in Mac McCarty’s freshman biology class and a senior-year Interim week observing surgery inspired a career in medicine.

This work has kept me connected to the school as it is today. I believe in supporting the school now, knowing that Annual Giving, the yearly benefit fundraiser and the North Shore Forevermore Campaign provide essential resources for the school to continue to grow and thrive. And I hope that, when the time comes, my Heritage Society gift will help the school continue its fantastic work — sending young people into the world better prepared than many of their peers.

“ It was exciting and eye-opening to see our three granddaughters (at Grandparents and Special Friends Day) in their daily academic environment where students are truly known and celebrated as individuals. Our gals clearly have formed meaningful connections with classmates and their teachers. It’s apparent that they have a strong sense of community here where they feel free and unafraid to explore and express their own very individual selves.”

ALL DONORS TO THE SCHOOL FROM THE PREVIOUS SCHOOL YEAR ARE INVITED TO OUR HANNAFORD RECOGNITION EVENT IN THE FALL.

310 Green Bay Road

Ways to Give

We welcome one-time or recurring donations online via credit card, or you can mail a check. Other ways to contribute include:

STOCK GIFTS

A gift of stock saves two ways. You avoid capital gains tax on the increased value and you receive a deduction for the full market value of the stock at the time you make the gift.

DONOR ADVISED FUNDS (DAF)

A donor advised fund (DAF) is a charitable giving vehicle that allows you to make a tax-deductible donation today and then recommend gifts (known as grants) to charities from the fund over time.

MATCHING GIFTS

Many employers offer matching gift programs that can double or even triple your donation. Check with your employer to see if your contribution to NSCD is eligible for a match.

For more information, please contact: Tracie Frederick, Director of Development 847.441.3316 or tfrederick@nscds.org
