PRESIDENT’S LETTER

Greetings, I am incredibly honored to serve as the Interim President of North Shore Community College. What I have found in my short time here is truly a “community.” A community of students who are intent on receiving a high quality, affordable education and who persist with determination and grit to complete their studies. A community of faculty and staff who are dedicated to the success of our students and fostering an excellent learning experience. A community of volunteers who lend their time and expertise to serve on the College’s Board of Trustees, Foundation, Alumni Association, program Advisory Boards, and a community of generous donors and partners who believe in the power of higher education and the passion of our students. Combined, these communities elevate NSCC as a leader in the building of a strong, vibrant North Shore region. For every student, program, and accomplishment you will learn about in the contents of this report, there are so many more that are just as meaningful, transformational, and inspiring. There is no one NSCC story, and it is that diversity that unites us all together. I welcome you to join us, get involved, seek out more information and challenge yourselves to even more fully engage with us as we meet our vital mission. In Health and Happiness,

Nate Bryant

NSCC RECEIVES $1.765M TO CREATE THE BERTOLON SIMULATION HEALTH CARE CENTER OF EXCELLENCE An unprecedented $1.765 million gift to NSCC created The Bertolon Simulation Health Care Center of Excellence in the Health Professions and Student Services building on the College’s Danvers campus. The gift from The Bertolon Family Foundation comes thanks to Beverly residents Henry and Donna Bertolon (NSCC Class of 1972) and their children.

Donna Bertolon, a 1972 graduate of NSCC, remembers going to classes in rented buildings in Beverly with the smell of pizza wafting up from the shop below. Despite the College’s humble beginnings, she credits NSCC as invaluable to her education and career preparation. Now, Donna along with her husband Henry and their family, have made this same opportunity possible for present and future North Shore learners by elevating NSCC’s academic and career-training opportunities to new heights.

Dr. David Roberts PRESIDENT, NORTH SHORE MEDICAL CENTER

Above: Donna & Henry Bertolon, daughter Jennifer Bertolon Card and retired NSCC President, Pat Gentile. The gift, the largest in the College’s history, established the Bertolon Center and is dedicated to the provision of enhanced state-of-the-art simulation labs and advanced technology for electronic medical records software training to enhance the curricula for the inter- and intra-professional health care, human services, and emergency response training programs at NSCC. The donation will enhance a myriad of NSCC programs, including: Nurse Education, Practical Nursing; Emergency Response Technician; Respiratory Therapy; Surgical Technology; Radiologic Technology; Medical Assistant; Substance Addiction; Criminal Justice; Occupational Therapy Assistant; Human Services; Physical Therapist Assistant; and Fire and Safety Protection.

ALUMNA DONNA BERTOLON

“NSCC helped launch my professional career which is why it holds a special place in my heart. Henry and I believe in the community college system. My experience at the College was extremely positive. I had great professors and learned numerous practical skills that gave me a definite advantage in securing employment,” Donna said. “Practical skills and graduating qualified job candidates are the reasons we decided to help NSCC, with the goal of increasing student access to the College’s already impressive Simulation Lab. With our gift, we hope to encourage other individuals and organizations to come join us and help make a difference by supporting NSCC, which we all know is a very important resource for so many young people in our community,” Donna said.

2020 President’s Report

Our relationship with NSCC goes way back; providing a clinical site for nurses, techs and all kinds of allied health students. We hire many of the graduates to work in our organization. Simulation is a huge part of how medical knowledge is conveyed now, especially techniques. If I was a North Shore student, I would be thrilled about this opportunity.

NSCC’s outstanding registered nursing program boasts strong student outcomes, including NSCC Nursing students earning top annual licensure pass rates, surpassing Commonwealth and national averages.

NSCC EARNS 10-YEAR RE-ACCREDITATION The New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE) has renewed NSCC’s accreditation for another decade. The decision follows nearly two years of review, analysis, preparation, site visits and a formal vote of the NECHE board. Accreditation of an institution of higher education by the Commission indicates that it meets or exceeds criteria for the assessment of institutional quality periodically applied though a peer review process. An accredited college or university is one which has available the necessary resources to achieve its stated purposes through appropriate educational programs, is substantially doing so, and gives reasonable evidence that it will continue to do so in the foreseeable future. Institutional integrity is also addressed through accreditation. NSCC was commended for: being filled with caring, competent professionals who are passionately committed to student and community success; having an excellent history of strategic planning recognized as an exemplar to other colleges; and successful community outreach programs to integrate the Lynn community, including the CommUniverCity initiative, as well as the continuous improvement of the Lynn Campus as evidenced by the McGee building expansion.

NATION’S TOP TWO-YEAR COLLEGES FOR ADULT LEARNERS For the third consecutive year, NSCC has been ranked as one of the nation’s top two-year colleges for adult learners. NSCC rose in rank from 16 up to 13 out of the 978 community colleges sampled, and was again the best MA community college at serving adult learners, scoring at the highest levels for flexibility of programs, ease of transfer, and services for adult students by Washington Monthly magazine’s annual College Guide and Rankings.

SPOTLIGHT

2020 CARNEGIE COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT CLASSIFICATION NSCC’s ongoing commitment to community engagement has resulted in the College receiving the 2020 Carnegie Community Engagement Classification. NSCC is the only community college in MA, and one of only three community colleges nationwide, chosen out of the 119 U.S. colleges and universities selected to receive the designation for 2020. This is the College’s second Carnegie Foundation distinction.

ALLIED HEALTH OUTCOMES NSCC’s Respiratory Care Program graduates achieved the highest pass rates in MA on the RRT (Registered Respiratory Therapist – the advanced credential) national licensure exam. Although the national average for success on the RRT exam is 80%, NSCC scored above that average at 97%, the highest in the Commonwealth.

EARLY COLLEGE I wanted to get ahead, so I enrolled in NSCC’s Early College program during my junior year at Lynn Technical Vocational Institute. The Early College program showed me that I could succeed as the first in my family to go to college. NSCC was the most affordable option after high school, and I always knew it was the smart choice to come here first and then transfer. Since graduating with my associate degree in 2019, I’ve been pursuing my bachelor’s degree in psychology at Salem State University, and plan to pursue a Ph.D. in clinical psychology.

Belinda Miranda

EARLY COLLEGE STUDENT

Belinda is one of hundreds of North Shore area students whose college aspiration became a reality through NSCC’s Early College program. Partnering with underserved public school districts like Lynn, Revere, Peabody and Salem, the Early College program combines a traditional high school experience with the opportunity to earn significant college credit on an intentional academic and career pathway, in a rigorous and highly supportive environment, at no cost to the students. Early College boosts college completion rates for low-income students, minority students, and first-generation college-goers by exposing students to college-level work and different career pathways before they graduate high school. The Early College courses are designed to fulfill high school graduation requirements and award college credit.

Inspiring Student Success Through Aspirational Grant Awards

In 2019, the seven-year Early College partnership between NSCC and the Lynn Public Schools was approved as a Designated MA Early College Program by the MA Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. The prestigious designation includes a $140,000 implementation grant. In addition, a $600,000 grant award from the Richard and Susan Smith Family Foundation affirms the potential for the NSCC/LPS Early College partnership to move the needle on increasing college access for high school students and will provide the resources to allow the partners to move from theory to practice.

Mbuaya Kalemba GRADUATION MAY 2018

An outstanding class of TRIO grads celebrate after Commencement.

NSCC AWARDED $2,843,430 TO HELP LOW-INCOME, FIRST-GENERATION, AND STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES SUCCEED IN COLLEGE NSCC students who are low income, first generation (those whose parents do not have a fouryear college degree) or students with disabilities will benefit from a federal Student Support Services (SSS) grant award of $2,843,430 over five years, or $568,686 per year, from the U.S. Department of Education. NSCC has received federal funding for its SSS program since 1971, which has allowed the college to serve tens of thousands of students.

It’s been extremely hard. Sometimes I wanted to give up, but my parents told us education is very important. I am determined to go to school against all odds, because I’ve been given a chance and an opportunity to carry on. Actively participating in the TRIO program was key to my success.

“Research on SSS programs shows that students participating in the program are retained at a significantly higher rate than non-SSS students. In other words, TRIO Works! Annually we see what the program does in terms of creating student success, building student leaders and transforming student’s lives. At NSCC, TRIO students are frequently Commencement speakers, heads of student government, clubs and honor societies,” said Dr. Nate Bryant, NSCC Interim President.

NSCC PROMOTING COLLEGE COMPLETION THROUGH PRIOR LEARNING ASSESSMENT

NSCC RECEIVES $2.248M TITLE III GRANT

Statistics show that, regionally, 90,000 adult residents have some college but no degree, including incumbent and underprepared and underserved workers. Through funding from the Essex County Community Foundation, NSCC is leading a new consortium to create pathways for local residents and students to earn college credit based on knowledge and skills they’ve learned on the job or in life, saving them time and money. The Northeast Regional Prior Learning Assessment Consortium (NERPLAC) is a partnership between Endicott College, Gordon College, Middlesex Community College, North Shore Community College, Northern Essex Community College, Salem State University, UMASS Lowell, Merrimack College, NSWIB/CC, Merrimack Valley WIB/Valley Works CC, Greater Lowell WDB/CC, Advances Learning Center, Wellspring, Inc., LEO, Inc., and Action, Inc.

A $2.248 million Title III Strengthening Institutions grant from the U.S. Department of Education (DOE) will allow North Shore Community College (NSCC) to address student retention and completion rates. Funding will allow for the creation of a Pathways to Success program, which will significantly integrate technology and academic programming to provide students with the tools they need to achieve their career goals in their chosen academic pathway. The five-year grant is one of only three DOE grants given in Massachusetts, and the only one awarded to a community college. “Title III is a transformative program which will inject significant resources to enable NSCC to better support student persistence and completion efforts. Students will be empowered to utilize a variety of resources to succeed,” said NSCC Interim President Dr. Nate Bryant.

NERPLAC promotes and increases the use of Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) as a strategy to boost college completion, strengthen professional skills for higher paying jobs in regional growth industries, and engender engagement in lifelong learning.

Jim Skelly

had almost 25 years of experience in the IT field when he began looking into a CYBER SECURITY DEGREE PROGRAM. A professor mentioned that he could receive credit for prior learning and experience.

A lot of the material in the classes covered what I already knew. As long as I showed competency, I was able to get credit for it. PLA opens up more compelling career options and getting the degree will further my career.

GE FOUNDATION SUPPORTS NORTH SHORE ADVANCED MANUFACTURING TRAINING Building a diverse, well-trained workforce that will accelerate advanced manufacturing on the North Shore is the goal of a $2.5 million grant from the GE Foundation. Funding will create the Advanced Manufacturing Training Expansion Program (AMTEP) in Lynn and Massachusetts’ North Shore, an initiative to address the region’s skills gap by supporting and coordinating technical training for residents while meeting the talent needs of manufacturing employers.

AMTEP will prime high school students from Lynn Vocational Technical Institute, Essex North Shore Agricultural & Technical School, and Gloucester High School, as well as support underemployed, unemployed and underrepresented adults such as veterans, minorities and women, to enable diverse community members to enter the advanced manufacturing workforce. NSCC will offer foundational literacy and mathematics training to better prepare adult learners for the program.

I saw a flyer on the wall with the Tech Hire machining program outlined, and since I’d been a machinist years ago back in the 80’s I thought, why not give it a try. I was with a group of wonderful men and women of all ages and ethnicities who all seemed to want what I wanted, a decent job, with decent wages that will put food on our tables, pay our bills and provide a promising future. Some were young kids just starting out in life, others were established professionals, some even engineers, looking for a change. I’m highly doubtful “this guy” will spend another sleepless night not knowing whether or not he’ll be able to get a decent paying job.”

Peter McCarty

2019 MACHINING TRAINING PROGRAM GRADUATE ACCEPTED INTO THE GE APPRENTICE PROGRAM

“Tackling the skills gap in industries like advanced manufacturing is key to ensuring that the Commonwealth’s economy continues to grow, our residents continue to find great jobs, and our employers find the workers they need,” said Secretary of Housing and Economic Development Mike Kennealy.

A proud class of graduates celebrate their accomplishment for completing NSCC’s Advanced Manufacturing Machinist Training program with NSCC and community leaders and faculty.

BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION ASSOCIATE DEGREE LYNN TECHNICAL HIGH SCHOOL,

Through the MALES program, I have been blessed with amazing opportunities and friendships that have turned into a brotherhood. The MALES program provides support, gives you advice on how to stay on track with your academic work, helps you to strive to reach your goals and teaches you how to stay determined even when you feel that there is no energy left. As a result of my involvement, I have been inspired to do better in school, at work, and just in my everyday life. I will forever be grateful for the brotherhood, for the love and for the support of the MALES Program.

CLASS OF 2018

My professor challenged us to think about what our “WHY” was – why we were in college and who we were doing it for. I realized that just because we’re marginalized minority students, doesn’t mean that we can’t be just as successful as our non-minority peers. I won’t be another statistic for the population of men of color who don’t successfully complete college; I want to be one of the many who persist and work in a career that I am passionate about!

HERE TO HELP I remember making a leap of faith to go to nursing school. I had to significantly decrease my work hours to make the commitment to NSCC’s nursing program. Two weeks into my first semester, I received a shut-off notice from the electric company. I was overwhelmed and afraid I had made a mistake.

MEN ACHIEVING LEADERSHIP, EXCELLENCE AND SUCCESS NSCC’s M.A.L.E.S. program develops and transforms educated and engaged individuals through mentorship, brotherhood, service learning, social capital and professional growth.

Sybil discovered NSCC’s Here to Help program on the college’s website and applied for assistance. “Very quickly, my request was approved. I didn’t need to prove anything; they just simply helped me so I could continue going to college. As a single parent, I am forever grateful for the Here to Help program! Thank you so much!” Many determined students find themselves just one hardship away from having to stop their college education. Financial emergencies, housing instability, food insecurity, transportation needs, and dependent care are just some of the obstacles that students may encounter. In response, NSCC launched Here to Help in 2018, an innovative program designed to prevent hardships from becoming barriers to higher education. Offering flexible financial assistance, meal vouchers, a mobile food market, and transportation assistance, Here to Help addresses essential student needs to boost college retention and completion. NSCC students in good academic standing are eligible to apply confidentially for assistance.

PATTON VETERANS PROJECT I am someone who has tried every kind of therapy, and this workshop worked the best for me by far. The collaboration between the student veterans and the filmmakers is key. I’m very grateful for this initiative.

Derek Brennan

STUDENT VETERAN

Derek Brennan and other NSCC student veterans turned short filmmakers by working with the Patton Veterans Project. Founded by Benjamin Patton to help veterans coping with post-traumatic stress reduce social isolation and strengthen family, community, and professional bonds, the Project utilizes intensive filmmaking workshops to help veterans collaborate with peers and process their service experiences. The short films created and produced by veterans are shown at screening events that validate veterans’ experiences, advance community dialogue, and educate the public about the mental health challenges facing veterans and military families. NSCC, in partnership with the NSCC Foundation, hosted two film screenings at its Danvers campus for the college and greater North Shore communities.

SCHOLARSHIPS – THE CORNERSTONE OF SUCCESS

“– 2020

Thank you for trusting me with this opportunity. I won’t let any of us down!

NSCCScholarship

Recipient

Thanks to the generosity of NSCC Foundation scholarship donors, more than $4M has been awarded to NSCC students since 1985. Scholarships are essential to ensuring higher education access and affordability, helping to cover tuition and fees, books, technology and more. In celebration of both new and longstanding scholarship donors, the NSCC Foundation has instituted a new, commemorative pin for lead donors to named annual and endowed scholarships. In addition, the Traicoff Award was established in 2019 in honor of George Traicoff, Ed.D., NSCC President Emeritus, who partnered with the founding members of the NSCC Foundation to establish the scholarship program during his tenure. The award will be given annually beginning in 2021 to an exemplary NSCC scholarship program supporter whose commitment inspires student achievement and the philanthropic engagement of others.

COVID-19 PANDEMIC PROMPTS MAJOR SHIFT TO VIRTUAL LEARNING & WORK With the health and safety of students and employees of primary concern, NSCC moved at lightning speed to ensure that its students could effectively achieve their academic and completion goals when the corona virus hit. The process to shift classroom-based academic courses to remote platforms took every working moment of the college’s faculty and staff. NSCC made a considerable investment to ensure: faculty had the training needed to develop online, hybrid and videoconference courses and labs; students had the technology needed to succeed such as Chromebooks, Hot Spots, and virtual resource access; and emergency student funding if needed. In the fall of 2020, the vast majority of NSCC students began the semester in a predominantly virtual environment. Only five percent of classes were offered in person on campus, most of which required face-to-face labs and simulations. Staff able to perform their duties from home did so.

This pandemic will change public higher education and our world in ways we can’t even imagine. All of us at NSCC remain steadfast in our commitment to the health and safety of our students and staff and to student success. We will continue to adjust and adapt to the changes brought forth by the COVID-19 pandemic.

PROFILES in Philanthropy A MESSAGE FROM JAMES HORROCKS, NSCC FOUNDATION PRESIDENT

“

After I retired, it was an honor to have the title of Professor Emeritus conferred upon me by the College. I surely want to invest in NSCC for the future so that more and more students will have the means to study at the College and also benefit from the Forums on Tolerance. My dear wife, Fran, and I have set aside in our estate planning a specific distribution upon our deaths to be used for the NSCC Forum on Tolerance Endowment Fund and a second specific distribution to perpetuate the Professor Sheldon Brown Tolerance Scholarship for a deserving student or students.

Mr. Richard “ Dick” Thompson and Dr. P. Jane Baugh

We believe that the higher education colleges we attended, Cornell and Harvard, enriched our lives. We have always wanted to give back to other students. Our only question was, when and where to do that. We became aware of North Shore Community College (NSCC) and the outstanding accomplishments of its students. We attended a variety of NSCC events featuring the College’s vision and goals and heard moving testimony from students about the transformational differences that NSCC made in their lives. After their graduations, most students stay and work on the North Shore. Because of this positive impact on students and the economic effect on the North Shore; we decided that this is the college we want to support. We have included NSCC in our estate planning. By sharing our story, we hope it will inspire others to consider including NSCC in their estate planning.

Dr. Patricia A. Gentile’s FAREWELL

Thomas M. McGee

MAYOR, CITY OF LYNN

President Gentile has given strength to the connection between the college and city of Lynn for all ages from early education opportunities, to the MALES Program, to opening a MASSHire Career Center on campus and countless other initiatives that have made higher education more accessible and affordable to North Shore residents, particularly in the City of Lynn. One of her most lasting accomplishments, and something I worked very closely with her on, was the creation of the CommUniverCity. It brought many entities in Lynn together to address the needs of the community.

I’ve been inspired by your intelligence, your ability to tackle really, really difficult challenges, your passion for education and community partnerships, and your ability to calmly, coolly, and compassionately persevere through all the different leadership initiatives you took on.

SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT HONORING DR. PATRICIA A. GENTILE, E d .D., PRESIDENT EMERITA As a nationally ranked, statewide leader in higher education, NSCC has a pivotal role in educating and training the region’s essential workforce. The Patricia A. Gentile, Ed.D. Scholarship Endowment for Health and Community Wellness will provide scholarships to students with financial need who are enrolled in Allied Health, Emergency Response, and Human Services programs. With more than 30% of all NSCC students enrolled in these programs, and over 90% of graduates living and working on the North Shore, this endowment will have a vital impact on the health and well-being of residents across the region. Total giving up to $30,000 will be matched 100% by The NSCC Foundation and will be eligible for a match up to 50% by the Public Higher Education Endowment Incentive Program through June 30, 2021.

GO ALL IN FOR NSCC! Pay it forward. Make your mark. Change a life. That’s what NSCC alumni, faculty and staff, residents of the North Shore region and beyond, and even current students accomplish by going ALL IN for NSCC with donations to the new annual fund campaign! Launched in 2019, ALL IN for NSCC supports three essential priorities: scholarships and learning, student essential needs, and areas of greatest need. Donors are invited to include an inspirational message with their gifts that may be shared with the college community. YOU can go ALL IN for NSCC today at northshore.edu/giving!

To give, visit northshore.edu/prezpatretires

I’m ALL IN for NSCC because it’s where I got my start in my nutrition career, and I know my gift to NSCC really makes an impact.

Elaine Jackson NSCC PROFESSOR EMERITA “When I reached my 80’s, I began thinking about what I wanted my legacy to look like. NSCC made me what I am, and my husband Gerald and I always had compassion for the underserved. We wished we could do more,” says Elaine, who, in 2019, established the Elaine M. Jackson Family Endowed Scholarship with a $50,000 gift to benefit NSCC students with demonstrated financial need. “It’s so important to have a view that ‘I can do it’, and NSCC shows students they can do it.” Elaine’s scholarship criteria was also influenced by the life of her father, who worked seven days a week to provide for his family.

In 2000, Scott suffered a stroke which left his entire left side nonfunctioning and was told by doctors he may never walk again. His physical therapist at the time was Mary Meng-Lee, now Department Chair and Program Director of NSCC’s PTA Program. “Mary is an incredible therapist, and because of her care, I was able to get my life and dreams back.” Although Scott now lives in Florida, he has volunteered as a speaker and as a simulated patient for NSCC’s PTA program. “I am so happy with the overall success of the students and the program. I want to help ensure it keeps going.”
