WHAT’S BAKING: New from the baker’s oven at Café Portofino (249 Main Street, Northport Village 631-262-7656) a duo of all natural whole wheat scones that make a delicious (dare we say healthy?) accompaniment to your morning joe. Whole wheat summer berry scones are bursting with fresh seasonal fruit; the whole wheat apricot almond scones are loaded with apricots and almonds. Made with all natural ingredients, each jumbo scone is $2.50. SERENA SIGHTING: After throwing out the first pitch at the new Yankee Stadium Friday in the Yankees vs. White Sox game, tennis great Serena Williams headed to Huntington’s newest hotspot, Porto Vivo (7 Gerard St., Huntington, 631-385-8486 www.portovivorestaurant.com) for dinner with Home Shopping Network maven Joy Mangano, recently named one of Fast Company’s Most Creative People of 2009. Williams, her manager and her sister Isha joined Porto Vivo owners Joy Mangano and Philipp Seipelt and Seipelt’s fiancée Christie Mangano in the upper level dining room. Williams enjoyed steamed littleneck clams and grilled branzino, but skipped vintages from the wine cellar, instead opting for water to gear up for play at the upcoming U.S. Open next week.

DAO SQUARED: Word on the street is that the team that brought you Dao New Asian Cuisine (92 E Main St., Huntington 631-425-7788 daorestaurant.com) is eyeing a second location in Melville. All we can tell you is it’s on Route 110 near the LIE. Until we learn more, try their eclectic mix of Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Thai and Malaysian cooking at their Huntington location. HAPPIEST HAPPY HOUR: Who has the best Friday night Happy Hour in Huntington? We’d have to say it’s a toss up between Bin 56 (6 Stewart Ave. 631-812-0060 bin56.com) and Mac’s Steakhouse (12 Gerard St. 631-549-5300 macssteakhouse.com). At Bin 56, the Friday night 5-at-5 special offers $5 wines by the glass and $5 tapas beginning at 5 p.m. It’s a great way to sample the eats and enjoy select wines at an affordable price. Friday night at Mac’s Steakhouse features two-for-one drinks and delicious passed hors d’oeuvres. Try ’em both and e-mail your thoughts to Foodie@LongIslandernews.com. PRIME TIME: Prime – An American Kitchen and Bar (117 New York Ave., Huntington 631-385-1515 restaurantprime.com) is making a weekend of Valentine’s Day. From Feb. 12 to Feb. 14, Prime celebrates Valentine’s Day with dinner specials in addition to the full a la carte menu. Especially appealing: The surf-and-turf special for two takes a Chinese menu approach. Diners pair “one from column A,” the Surf selections, with “one from column B,” the Turf selections. Surf choices: 2-lb. Canadian hard shell lobster; colossal prawns in a shellfish reduction; or Alaskan king crab. Choices from the Turf side determine the price; choose filet mignon ($88); Tellers’ Ribeye ($99) or Porterhouse ($134). Make your reservations early. SENIOR MOMENT: Mondays are one day you can enjoy a senior moment, as long as you’re visiting Copenhagen Bakery (75 Woodbine Ave., Northport 631-754-3256 copenhagenbakery.com). Seniors get 20 percent off their purchases on Mondays, so it’s a great day to stock up for the week. Drop in and tell Fleming the Foodies sent you. NO SECRET: The weekly specials are always innovative and fun at 34 New Street (34 New St., Huntington 631-427-3434 34newstreet.com). Weekly specials change every Friday and they’re never a secret. Just go to the website at www.34newstreet.com, click on the chef’s specials tab and plan your meal. Dine At The Chef’s Table: Porto Vivo (7 Gerard St., Huntington 631-385-8486 www.porto-vivo.com), bares all – in the kitchen, at least – with their exclusive Chef’s Table dining experience, offering diners a behind the scenes look in Chef Steven Lecchi’s kitchen. The evening begins with hors d’oeuvre and welcome cocktail in the kitchen where you’ll meet the chef. Lecchi will then prepare a five-course dinner served at the communal table for 16. The menu: Amuse-Bouche: creamed egg with smoked salmon and chives; first course: lobster and foie gras ravioli, lemon-ginger lobster sauce; second course: steamed Dover sole with herbed mouseline and champagne-caviar sauce; third course: creamy polenta and Tuscan braised rabbit; fourth course: roast rack of lamb, lamb osso bucco and tomatoFontina grilled cheese; dessert: caramelized pineapple, sage pot au crème and macadamia nut shortbread. http://www.longislandernews.com/features/side158.html

THINK PINK: Michael and Kurt Bohlsen, owners of The Bohlsen Restaurant Group, in support of local breast cancer coalitions, will donate $1 from Think Pink menu items ordered in October at their leading Long Island restaurants: Prime: An American Kitchen and Bar, Tellers Chophouse and H2O Seafood Grill. “As local business owners born and raised on Long Island, serving and employing Long Islanders, each restaurant will support its local breast cancer coalition,” said Michael Bohlsen. “The cause is so near to our hearts as a family and as an employer. The work local breast cancer coalitions do is very helpful to the people in the communities in which we live and work.” Diners at Prime (117 New York Avenue, Huntington 631-385-1515 www.restaurantprime.com) will raise funds for Huntington Breast Cancer Coalition (www.hbcac.org), and pink baseball hats will be available for an extra $5 donation to the coalition. Pink touches are at the heart of the dinner menus: appetizers of king crab roll with pink watermelon radish, avocado and tobbikko; pink chiogga beet risotto with olive oil poached shrimp and tarragon; tuna tartare with avocado purée, soy sesame vinaigrette and wonton crisp; and cream of tomato soup with mini-truffled grilled cheese. Among the main courses will be hanger steak with Hawaiian pink sea salt with roasted garlic potato gratin and escarole; perfectly pink rack of lamb with cranberry bean ragout and lamb jus; and pan-roasted pink snapper with coconut Thai rice and grapefruit papaya salsa. Sweet endings include pink champagne cake with raspberry mousse and coconut sorbet; red velvet cake with pink ribbon mousse; and raspberry crème brulée. Shades of pink extend to the drinks menu as well with rosé and sparkling pink wines by the glass, and pink cocktails like the French Kiss, Island Sunset, Pink Cougar, Cocoa Chanel and Love Cocktail. DINE AROUND TOWN: “Dine Around The Town,” an evening of gourmet foods, wines and desserts, will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 6 at Appliance World in Huntington village. The night will benefit the homeless in the community by raising funds for the Huntington Interfaith Homeless Initiative (HIHI). Guests will enjoy delicious specialties from some of the most popular restaurants in town: Besito, Rookies, Mascali, Quezalcoatl, Harbor Club, Show Win, Bonwit Inn and 34 New Street. Sumptuous desserts will follow from A Rise Above, Reinwald's, Copenhagen Bakery and Cupcake Gourmet. And what would great food be without fine wine? An impressive selection of wines by Pindar and Banfi wineries will be offered, along with beer from Blue Point brewery. A Chinese Auction, special entertainment and raffles will make the evening even more exciting. All funds raised will go to HIHI, a coalition of over 30 local houses of worship, working together to house the homeless each winter. HIHI’s respite program operates seven nights a week, housing and feeding on average 25 guests per night for 20 weeks a year from late November to April. Last winter HIHI served a record number of guests and expects high occupancy this winter as well. Dine Around The Town tickets are $50/person, $85/couple. For tickets call 631-427-0679. STAR SIGHTINGS: Either Huntington is becoming celebrity central, or restaurant owners have learned to keep a camera behind the bar. Some recent sightings in the neighborhood: Billy Joel enjoyed the rib-eye and Cabernet Sauvignon at Prime (117 New York Ave., Huntington 631-385-1515 www.restaurantprime.com) on Sunday, Oct. 11. A night earlier, the Piano Man was seen with friends at Porto Vivo (7 Gerard St., Huntington 631-385-8486, www.porto-vivo.com), one of many famous faces at this new hotspot. Fashion designer and Project Runway winner Christian Siriano dined last Thursday with Project Runway designer Victorya Hong, former contestant and model Jacquelin Miranne and Porto Vivo owners Joy Mangano and Philipp Seipelt. Last Sunday, Miss New York Alyse Zwick had lunch after her appearance at the Long Island Fall Festival at Huntington. And finally, Mario Lopez, of Dancing With the Stars fame, followed a book signing event at Book Revue with a meal at Besito (402 New York Ave, Huntington www.besitomex.com) this past Sunday. Lopez and three friends enjoyed Besito’s signature guacamole and other dishes. PIZZA FOR A YEAR: The restaurant trade has been rockin’ during Dine Huntington Restaurant Week. Organized by the Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce and Long Islander Newspapers with support from sponsor Lexus of Massapequa, the 12-day celebration finishes up Friday night, Oct. 23. The excitement will continue as diners post their reviews to the DineHuntington Facebook fan page. The writer of the best review will win a pizza a week for a year from Junior’s/Almarco in Huntington. Find your restaurant at www.DineHuntington.com and make the most of the two nights remaining. NEW HONU MENU: There’s a new menu at HONU Kitchen & Cocktails (363 New York Ave., Huntington 631-421-6900 www.honukitchen.com). The restaurant that first launched as Blue Honu had a Hawaiian theme until a 2007 makeover launched the small plate craze. Now owners John and David Tunney and John Reiger are returning to the comfort of American fare. Chef Matthew Lake’s new menu of American cuisine features substantial starters, entrees and sides at affordable prices. Many small plate items are still on the menu as starters or entrees. Entrées include one side dish, and additional sides are $6, which are enough to share between two people. “Diners want more for their money,” said John Tunney. “By increasing our portion size, adding sides and keeping our prices affordable we can welcome more guests, especially on weeknights.” TUPPERWARE PARTY: Ripe Art Gallery in Greenlawn is hosting a Tupperware Party with Long Island’s own “Aunt Barbara.” The self-proclaimed Queen of Tupperware sales will be hawking the plastic food savers personally Saturday, Oct. 24 at 8 p.m. Doors will open at 7:30 p.m. BOOK SIGNING EVENT: Long Island author Darren Sardelli will sign copies of his children’s book, “Galaxy Pizza and Meteor Pie” on Saturday, Oct. 24 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Caffe Portofino (249 Main St., Northport 631-262-7656). We can’t tell you what the book’s about, but it has food in the title and a nifty illustration on the cover. KIDS EAT FREE: This Halloween, Applebee’s (360 Walt Whitman Rd., Huntington Station 631-427-3504) will treat all costumed kids to a free meal. Families who dine at Applebee’s anytime on Saturday, Oct. 31 will receive up to four free kids’ meals with each adult entrée purchase. The free meal is valid for children in costume, ages 12 and under, on any Applebee’s “Kids’ Menu” entrée, dine-in only. “Before your pirates and princesses start gobbling up mouthfuls of sweets, we’ll be happy to treat them to a nourishing meal,” said General Manager Mark Windhurst. “We’re looking forward to seeing the kids in costume and celebrating this neighborhood fun together.” READY FOR MORE? Foodies, rejoice. Though Huntington Restaurant Week is coming to a close Friday night, Oct. 23, another restaurant food fest is coming our way. The fourth annual Long Island Restaurant Week will be presented by WordHampton Public Relations, Nov. 1-8, 2009. For eight days, Sunday to Sunday, all participating restaurants offer a three-

MEET THE MILLIONAIRE: Porto Vivo (7 Gerard St., Huntington, 631-385-8486 www.porto-vivo.com) will host a “Millionaire Matchmaker” client, Douglas S. Kepanis, at a screening party featuring the reality contestant’s episodes on Dec. 7 from 7 - 11 p.m. In Bravo’s show, California matchmaker extraordinaire Patti Stanger brings her talents to the East Coast to help wealthy, dating-impaired men find love. Clients get complete makeovers with the help of personal shoppers, date coaches and therapists. Local client Kepanis is a divorce and family law attorney with offices in Manhattan and Uniondale. Hit Porto Vivo’s screening party to watch Kepanis’ episode and find out how he made out… and maybe even take a bite at the apple yourself – he’ll be there. There will be drink specials all night. SOUP’S ON: With winter on the way, The Lite Choice (293 Main St., Huntington, 631-3515483) has added a few hot treats to supplement the frozen yogurt menu. TLC is carrying allnatural hot chocolate as well as organic and all-natural homemade soups. All soups are served with a fresh whole wheat roll. They will feature three soups per week, one always being vegetarian. All soups are served with tender loving care. They also offer olive oil and fresh cheeses, catering to all palates. Any meat used will be organic and sea salt is used at a bare minimum. People are saying it’s as good as their grandmothers have ever made! PRIME TREE LIGHTING: Prime – An American Kitchen and Bar (117 New York Ave., Huntington 631-385-1515 www.restaurantprime.com) presents the first of what they hope will be an annual tradition with a Holiday Tree Lighting on Huntington Harbor at Prime on Monday, Nov. 29 beginning at 5:30 p.m. “There is no better time to gather with one’s neighbors or to recognize our children in need than during this season of goodwill. On behalf of the Bohlsen family and the team at Prime, we invite those who live and work in our community to this first Tree Lighting on Huntington Harbor, in what we hope will become a tradition,” said Prime Restaurant co-owner Michael Bohlsen. Against the scenic backdrop of Huntington Harbor, Prime will be a winter wonderland of lights, festive caroling, photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus, and hot chocolate and seasonal cookies. The highlight of the evening will be the lighting of a 30-foot balsam fir adorned with 25,000 white lights by guest of honor Kevin Lawlor, Huntington Hospital’s president and chief executive officer. Joining him on the platform will be Huntington Town Supervisor Frank Petrone. Lawlor represents the evening’s charity of honor, the Clark Gillies Children’s Emergency Care Center at Huntington Hospital. “We hope to forge a long-term relationship with Huntington Hospital and particularly the children’s unit. Of course, Prime is a neighbor and the Bohlsen Family Foundation has a special interest in community healthcare. Yet the hospital holds another important place in our family’s life. It is the place of both my and my brother Kurt’s birth.”

FOODIE

When Chefs Gather By Peter Sloggatt/foodie@longislandernews.com

It’s a flock of birds, a gaggle of geese, a pod of whales… what do you call a group of Long Island’s finest chefs? In a word, mouth-watering. The Great Chefs of Long Island fundraiser to benefit Family Service League of Suffolk – an annual event much anticipated by foodies – was held Sunday at the Crest Hollow Country Club and brought together the Island’s top chefs with their appreciative fans. In fact, nearly 50 of the Island’s top chefs were at cooking stations that lined two large rooms. Guests roamed from station to station collecting plates of food and tastings of hundreds of fine wines. The event honored several Family Service League supporters in recognition of their steadfast allegiance to the health and family services organization: Lynn and Jonah Kaufman of Huntington, owners of McDonalds franchises throughout the tri-state area; State Senator Carl Marcellino; and the Bohlsen family, restaurateurs whose Prime, H2O and Tellers make up a “holy trinity” of Long Island fine dining. Any gathering of top chefs from Long Island will find Huntington well represented, and this year’s Great Chefs event was no exception. Among the nearly 50 restaurants were Prime, Porto Vivo, Jonathan’s Ristorante, Mill Pond House, Piccolo, Red, Osteria di Nino, Besito, Ruvo, Café Buenos Aires, Martoni’s Ristorante, Four Food Studio, and the new kid on the block, Blond Restaurant and Wine Bar. There were dozens more, and it was impossible to hit them all, though we tried. On a recommendation from Legislator Jon Cooper, we headed first to Porto Vivo, where Executive Chef Steven Lecchi was serving an autumnal house specialty, butternut squash puree with pancetta and pistachio oil. We returned for seconds. We also were sure to visit Chef Matthew Lake who was preparing Besito’s signature guacamole in a stone vessel, just like the tableside preparation at the restaurant. Among other local standouts: • Prime served a pan-seared potato gnocchi with white truffle sauce and Parmigiana shavings that was both earthy and refined at the same time. • Ruvo partner Jim DeNicola served arancini, a fried rice ball atop a spicy dollop of tomato sauce with some kick. • Piccolo manager Michael Abu presented a nice contrast in sweet and savory with a braised short rib with sweet peas and truffle oil. • Jonathan’s Executive Chef Tito Onofre made a bold statement with white cannelloni beans and escarole with shrimp puttanesca, the velvety white beans providing a perfect platform for the chunky, spicy treat atop. • Blond Chef de Cuisine Seth Sloan dazzled with a complex and well-composed offering: ginger fennel braised short rib with potato puree and barbeque demi-glaze. Wonderful! On the dessert side, Fleming Hanson of Northport’s Copenhagen Bakery – a welcome sight at any event – had a helping hand from his son doling out sweets. That’s just a handful of the nearly 50 chefs who served some 600 guests and helped make

CHEF’S TABLE: Porto Vivo (7 Gerard St., Huntington 631-385-8486, www.portovivo.com) hosts an evening of world class food and wines on Feb. 23, with its unique Chef’s Table experience. Begin the evening with a cocktail and hors d’oeuvre amid the hustle and bustle of Porto Vivo’s busy kitchen. After presenting the first course, Chef Steven Lecchi will prepare a five-course dinner served at a communal table in the dining room. Bill Whiting of Banfi Vintners, whose wine portfolio includes some of Wine Spectator’s top-rated vintages, will share his knowledge while explaining wine pairings. The cost is $89 per person plus the cost of wine, and participation is limited to 16 guests, so call right away to assure yourself a seat at the Chef’s Table. EAT AMERICAN: What did Greek TV food star and restaurateur Maria Loi eat when she and PBS TV’s Laura Savini dined at Prime – An American Kitchen and Bar (117 New York Ave., Huntington 631-385-1515 www.primerestaurant.com) earlier this month? Although the restaurant featured Greek cuisine as part of its Jet Set menu specials for February, the two enjoyed sushi and American favorites: a tornado roll, spinach and beet salads, and porterhouse and rib-eye steaks. Executive chef Gregg Lauletta sent over a selection of desserts in return, for which Chef Maria agreed to share her traditional baklava recipe. POOR MAN’S TRUFFLE: The hottest trend in the ever-trendy restaurant scene these days seems to be black garlic. That’s right, black garlic, an anti-oxidant-rich Korean creation that results from a fermentation process which turns the cloves black while leaving the peel white. Chefs use it in stews, marinades, salads and risotto, among other things, to add a complex and heady flavor. In dishes like a risotto, the black slices give the appearance of truffles without the hefty price tag. How trendy is the stuff? Well, it has its own Twitter handle: @blackgarlic. Five bulbs run about $15 from cookingenthusiast.com.

Who’s Got The Best Burger In Town? By DineHuntington.com / foodie@longislandernews.com

The burger wars are on. It started when the Foodies asked the question, “Who makes the best burger in the Town of Huntington?” Fans of our DineHuntington page on Facebook were quick to respond, naming their favorites as Huntington’s best burger. Of course, there were as many opinions as there are burger joints out there, and like everything food related, it’s all a matter of taste. The burger scene in the Town of Huntington covers the full spectrum of tastes. Whatever your preference, it’s out there. There are $3 burgers, there are $25 burgers, and there’s a world of burgers in between. From one-handed sliders to two-fisted meals, they range from the simple classic burger on a bun to complex creations that can’t be contained on any size roll. And everyone has their favorite. What follows is a glimpse into Huntington’s burger world. The Foodies want you to take up the burger wars challenge: get out there and try them, and let us know what you think at our DineHuntington fan page on Facebook. If you’re already a fan, you know what to do. If you’re not, become one. Go to www.DineHuntington.com and click on the “Become a Fan” button. Then tell everyone who makes the best burger in the Town of Huntington. To get you started, here’s an overview of some of the town’s top burgers. 34 New Street 34 New St., Huntington 631-427-3434 34newstreet.com Whether he’s working on pizza dough or a white plate, 34 New Street chef/owner Steve Camas is an artist who loves innovative and surprising food combinations. His burger, however, sticks to the classic combination. It’s built around a half-pound of Angus beef, grilled to order and served with lettuce, tomato, pickle, American or cheddar cheese, sautéed onions, sautéed mushrooms, or bacon, and served with french fries. $12. Mention the Burger Wars challenge and Steve will throw in a free glass of beer with your burger. Canterbury Ales 314 New York Ave., Huntington 631-549-4404 centerburyales.com If Canterbury Ales owner Billy Hoest had one of those signs like McDonald’s – “Billions Served” – we wonder what the number would be. In 33 years, Billy’s served a lot of burgers. Canterburger fans swear by them. The original Canterburger – 8-oz. patty on a Kaiser roll with the usual trimmings ($12.99); the California Canterburger, with sliced mushrooms, avocado, sprouts, slaw and mozzarella ($13.99); Cajun Bleu Burger, with melted bleu cheese and buffalo wing sauce; and the Buffalo Canterburger - Prime bison with the usual trimmings ($12.99) are just a few. http://www.longislandernews.com/features/foodie206.html

NEW BAR MENU: The launch of Ladies Night Thursdays at Porto Vivo (7 Gerard St., Huntington, NY, 631-385-8486, www.porto-vivo.com) was also the launch of a new bar menu. We’re excited to finally see a burger on the menu; the grilled Wagyu beef burger with pancetta, fontina cheese and balsamic onions with truffled fries ($13.50) is delicious. We hear the Montauk lobster club sandwich with avocado and pancetta ($18) has also been very well received.

WINE SPECIAL: Jonathan’s Ristorante (15 Wall St., Huntington 631-549-0055 jonathansristorante.com) will offer a wine special Wednesday and Thursday nights. All bottles of wine on the Wine Spectator Award-winning wine list are 30 percent off the original price. Not that we need an excuse to eat at Jonathan’s. BURGER BATTLES: DineHuntington’s Burger Wars Challenge had griddles and broilers working overtime this past weekend. The battle continues so there’s plenty of time to try them all. We owe a correction to Canterbury Ales for misstating the price of the Canterburger. It is $10.99. Stay up-to-the-minute with Burger Wars on DineHuntington’s Facebook page. ’SCUSE THEM WHILE THEY FRESHEN UP: Years ago, Osteria Da Nino (292 Main St., Huntington 631-425-0820 www. ninosrusticitalian.com) set the trend as one of the first area restaurants to throw open their windows to the street, bringing the outside in and the inside out. The restaurant closed for renovations this week and will re-open in time for Mother’s Day. We’re looking forward to seeing what new trend Nino sets. PRIME TIME FOR KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: “Today’s” Kathie Lee Gifford, author of new children’s book “Party Animals,” had her own “hen” party at Huntington’s Prime Restaurant (117 New York Ave, Huntington 631-385-1515 restaurantprime.com) on April 16 before her book signing event at Book Revue. There as a party of four, and simpatico with her book’s lead character Lucy Goosy, Gifford enjoyed a special dessert like the one on the cover of her new book “Party Animals.” Chef Gregg Lauletta’s version was a meringue with berries, Meyer lemon sorbet and butter crunch. The sweet treat went out to the table after the party enjoyed lobster bisque, Caesar and spinach salads, branzino with rainbow Swiss chard and black olive vinaigrette, filet mignon, and salmon with fingerling potatoes, spinach and black trumpet mushrooms.

THE JOY OF CHEESECAKE: There was a buzz of excitement during opening night at Huntington’s newest restaurant, Porto Vivo (7 Gerard Street, Huntington 631-385-8486 porto-vivo.com) this past Saturday. A lively bar crowd added to the atmosphere, and the tables were filled in both the ground and upper level dining rooms. The rustic Italian theme is in menu only; décor is chic, upscale and modern. The menu was sans sticker shock, though an almost algorithmic approach to ordering can result in a higher than expected tab. Among the stars of the evening were the fried artichoke heart appetizer, a lobster and crab ravioli, and wild salmon with a licorice-y fennel aioli. For dessert, owner and QVC TV shopping queen Joy Mangano’s signature cheesecake was nicely complemented with blackberries. Mangano greeted guests at the reservations desk while her partner and soonto-be son-in-law, Philipp Seipelt, worked the rooms with fiancée Jacqueline Mangano. A sharp-looking couple, they chatted with patrons and smoothly ironed out those opening night wrinkles.

STANLEY VISITS: The Stanley Cup has been in the White House, the Kremlin and now at Prime Restaurant (117 New York Avenue, Huntington 631-385-1515 primerestaurantlongisland.com) on Huntington Harbor. That’s where Pittsburgh Penguin Bill Guerin, a two-time Stanley Cup winner and Long Island resident, chose to take the 35pound trophy as part of his 24-hour celebration with it, family and friends on Saturday, Aug. 15. At the party for 250 people, Executive Chef Gregg Lauletta prepared hors d’oeuvres of baby lamb chops, crab cakes with aioli, crispy shrimp, mini-Kobe burger sliders, pulled pork sliders, baby back ribs, tomato and mozzarella Napoleons, and pork and chive dumplings. The most popular of eight stations, a giant raw bar featured an ice sculpture of the Pittsburgh Penguins emblem. Two sculptures of clams, heaped with 70 pounds of giant shrimp, decked the table, as did 110 pounds of lobster (five 10-pounders and 60 1pounders), bushels of clams and oysters. In between photos with the trophy and relaxing with his guests, Guerin was spotted favoring a tornado roll (shrimp, avocado, fried potato and eel sauce) along with wild mushroom risotto made with shaved Parmigiana and truffle oil.

HIT THE ROAD: Take a road trip without ever leaving Huntington at Prime - An American Kitchen and Bar (117 New York Ave., Huntington 631-385-1515 www.restaurantprime.com). Prime takes diners on a culinary expedition with Road Trip menus available during dinner starting at 4 p.m. daily, except Sunday when it's from 3 p.m. on. Three-course menus and drink pairings are themed to a new region of the United States every six to 10 weeks. The program opens with menu selections from Cape Cod beginning Sept. 14. Later road trips will take in Chesapeake Bay, Miami, New Orleans and Santa Fe. Stay tuned. FOOD AND FLOWERS? The best food is a feast for the eyes. On Sept. 14, members of the Nathan Hale Garden Club will learn how to incorporate fruits and vegetables into their flower arrangements. Carolyn Brink, a former student of New York Botanical Garden's commercial floral design program and florist with 25 years in the industry, will present "Designing Flowers with Fruits and Vegetables." Brink's use of flowers, fruits and vegetables are a deliciously refreshing approach to flower arranging. All are welcome to the demonstration at 1:30 p.m. in the Cold Spring Harbor Library. For more information, call Sandy Finley at 631-367-6339. BRAVO, MONDO: The Foodies hit Piccolo Mondo (1870 E. Jericho Tpke., Huntington 631-462-0718 www.piccolomondoli.com) to take in the first of 20 Wednesday night dinners that will celebrate the cuisines of 20 regions of Italy. It was a delightful six-course meal with wine, celebrating the regional specialties of Tuscany, arguably the food capital of Italy. Highlights were a hearty tomato soup with cheese-topped crustini, homemade pasta in a veal Bolognese sauce, and a spicy zuppa de pesce with mussels, clams and calamari. From what we could see, most tables in the packed dining room were ordering the special menu. We'll be back to try another. BRING A QUARTER: Huntington village hot spot Porto Vivo (7 Gerard St., Huntington 631-385-8486 www.porto-vivo.com) introduces Late Night Saturdays. Enjoy the gourmet bar menu, with treats like Wagyu beef sliders ($11), fried calamari ($13), or the Bocconcini ($17) - which is apparently Italian for "tapas" and includes crispy crabcake, braised short rib tortelloni, three-cheese calzone and broccoli rabe sausage. But timing is everything, because from 10 p.m. to 11 p.m. drinks are 7 cents. Yeah, 7 cents! Bring a quarter and have a grand time. MANDUCAVI, BIBI, RISI: That means "eat, drink, laugh," which is what you'll do when Long Island Comedy Festival returns to Meehan's (371 New York Ave., Huntington 631-3510831 meehansrestaurant.com) on Saturday, Sept. 25, 8:30 p.m. in Meehan's Oak Room. Comedians Rich Walker (opening act for Ray Romano), Carie Karavas (direct from Vegas) and Stan Keshner (direct from the Catskills) promise a night of non-stop laughter. Tickets are $20 a head. Arrive early for dinner, or order from a special bar menu during the show. In Latin, that's Bon Temps.

Getting Ready To Dine Huntington Second Annual Dine Huntington Restaurant Week booked for Oct. 10-17 with more choices By Dinehuntington.com/foodie@longislandernews.com

Save the dates and save your appetite… the second annual Dine Huntington Restaurant Week, sponsored by Long Islander Newspapers and the Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce, will make your mouth water Oct. 10-17, showcasing restaurants from the Dining Capital of Long Island – Huntington. For eight days, restaurants throughout the Town of Huntington will show off their food artistry to introduce their establishments to new diners. Restaurants will serve up a threecourse dining experience for $24.95 per person plus tax and tip (Saturday until 7 p.m. only).

Dine Huntington Restaurant Week is a collaborative venture of Long Islander Newspapers and Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce designed to promote a vital sector of Huntington’s economy – restaurants.

“Huntington is the dining capital of Long Island and Dine Huntington will give restaurant owners an opportunity to showcase their establishments and gain exposure to new customers,” said Michael Schenkler, publisher of Long Islander Newspapers. Some familiar faces from last year’s first Dine Huntington program will bring their culinary mastery to the table again. Prime – An American Kitchen & Bar will draw crowds with Executive Chef Gregg Lauletta’s creations, as will others in the Huntington village area, including Porto Vivo, Jonathan’s, Mac’s, Tutto Pazzo, Osteria da Nino, Café Buenos Aires, Bistro Cassis, La Bottega, Honu, Besito, F.H. Riley’s, Munday’s, Almarco, Dao, Guido’s, Rookies Sports Club, Christopher’s Courtyard Café, 34 New Street and Blond.

Red Restaurant’s menu is calling out to us, in particular the fall-off-the-bone Baby Back Ribs and Risotto special (pan-seared diver sea scallops over champagne and citrus risotto). Everything is a classic at Mac’s, and during Restaurant Week, you have your choice of grilled skirt steak, tilapia, roasted chicken and grilled wild salmon. At Bin 56, we can’t wait to try the Warm Tomato Tart (Roma tomato confit, roasted Spanish onions, Manchego cheese) and Pan-Roasted Atlantic Cod (with corn and cremini mushroom ragout, saffron rice and fig balsamic reduction). Meehan’s has a pork shanks appetizer finished with a Jack Daniels barbecue sauce and sauerbraten (with homemade potato pancakes, red cabbage and apple sauce) we’re dying to try. Crew is enticing us with its gnocchi with shitake mushrooms and black truffle cream sauce, and its pork medallions with tomato fettuccini.

Dine Huntington also welcomes back Clubhouse, Piccola Busola, Wild Ginger, Martoni’s Ristorante Italiano, La Spada, Bistro 44, The Bonwit Inn, the Northport Tasting Room, La Villini and Ruvo. Ruvo’s menu looks hearty: sweet potato and pumpkin bisque, filet mignon and lobster risotto, and a grilled pork porterhouse with sweet potato puree.

With more and more restaurants participating, newcomers to Restaurant Week include: Black & Blue Seafood Chophouse in Huntington, Grasso’s in Cold Spring Harbor, Sweet Mama’s in Northport, and Jeff’s Seafood & Galley in East Northport. From Commack, Nisen

Sushi, Izumi Sushi and Hibatchi Grill, Perfecto Mundo Latin Bistro and Ciao Baby are welcome additions, while in Fort Salonga, Elijah Churchill’s is offering a Steak Walla-Walla (prime, king-cut skirt steak marinated in honey ginger teriyaki) that’s calling our name.

The exotic flavors of Thai USA, Kura Barn and Kabul (Afghani) are new to Restaurant Week this year, as is the classic favorite, Canterbury Ales. A unique deal presents itself at The Sky Room Café at Cinema Arts Centre, where $24.95 gets you dinner and a movie: one ticket, small popcorn, medium soda, choice of small salad, choice of entrée, choice of dessert and coffee or tea.

In Melville, Rosewood Inn, Tre Scalini, Barolo and Cirella’s join the list. Cirella’s is offering a Brassato al Marsala that looks scrumptious – braised boneless short ribs with wild mushrooms and white truffle oil in a marsala wine sauce served over sautéed spinach.

And don’t forget about the Rose Hunt Restaurant at the Inn at Fox Hollow in Woodbury; the newly opened Fado (Portuguese) in Huntington village and Harbor Mist in Cold Spring Harbor; or the soon-to-open Swallow and Black Lantern Ultra Lounge and Sushi Den.

Dine Huntington Restaurant Week is not only good for the hospitality industry, it is beneficial to the local economy overall.

“The inaugural Dine Huntington event in 2009 brought thousands of diners to area restaurants and generated an estimated $1 million in direct sales,” said Chamber Chairman Bob Bontempi.

The benefits extend across the board.

“Diners who enjoy a meal also patronize nearby shops. They window shop and get to know our downtowns,” Bontempi added.

Patrons can line up their Dine Huntington Restaurant Week excursions by logging on to www.DineHuntington .com, where menus from participating restaurants will be posted.

Restaurants interested in participating in Dine Huntington Restaurant Week may call 631427-7000 for further information. In addition, a limited number of sponsorships are available.

Check out the list (it grows daily) of participating restaurants and preview the menus at www.dinehuntington.com. Reviewers Rave About Restaurant Week Diners dish about their Dine Huntington Restaurant Week experiences By Tricia & Luann/ foodie@longislandernews.com

With only two more days left to “dine Huntington,” the reviews are coming in, and all indications are that Dine Huntington Restaurant Week is a success. Participating restaurants townwide are enjoying a steady flow of traffic as diners take the opportunity to try new restaurants and enjoy the three-course menus being offered through tomorrow, Oct. 23. It seems that diners were hungry for the opportunity to try new places, and according to comments posted to the DineHuntington fan page on Facebook, restaurateurs stepped up to the plate. Melissa J. Karrer called Honu Kitchen and Cocktails “absolutely top-notch. The food was perfect, and the service was lovely. I could not have asked for more, from the great value on the bottle of wine to the fireplace nearby, to the terrific food.” And according to Dena Klein, their “new scallop dish is superb.” Susan Serra said of her first visit to Porto Vivo, “...the food was absolutely fantastic, the atmosphere lovely and modern, the service was truly impeccable. I expect to find a restaurant like this in the city… so fortunate to have it five minutes from my home.” Marina Zahn-Matera had “a great experience at Conca D'Oro! Old fashioned Italian style restaurant. Grandma was in the kitchen!” Mike DeLuise gave “five stars to the chefs and staff of La Spada. Absolutely magnificent pasta, seafood and much more. Even coffee and creme brulee are prize winners.” Of Munday’s, Naomi Edlin wrote, “an old standby rediscovered. Munday's served us fabulous food at a price we could afford! The ultimate grilled cheese was a fantastic twist on a childhood favorite and the chicken burger definitely put a smile on my mom's face!” Sharon Lupia McGovern said she had a fantastic dinner at Mac's Steakhouse, while Bryan Kelly said, “Bin 56 has a great new chef and yummy menu.” Geriann Casola said Mangiamo is the best Italian she has had in a long time, adding, the “owners are great, so is the staff – one place I have never had a bad glass of wine!” According to Andrew Schild, Skipper’s Pub in Northport has something for everyone, whether “you’re looking for a good drink and a snack or a sit down dinner with the entire family… the food is amazing.” Ruvo in Greenlawn has also been a popular choice. Wendy Harrington said it has “amazing food” and is “not overpriced. The staff are amazing with a great ambiance.” Lisa Harris added that Ruvo “…never fails to impress. The combination of local wines, local produce and exceptional use of seasonal ingredients add to a menu which stimulates the palate and entices the soul. One should never deny themselves the caramel apple martini... it is a seasonal exclamation mark!” Jeanine Giordano-Howard said Piccolo Bussola was an “excellent choice once again! Everything was delicious and the service was wonderful… the cannoli was so rich and creamy, it was almost sinful.” Lauri Herrington Levenberg praised the skills of her chef at Samurai Hibachi, while Jason

Lauri Herrington Levenberg praised the skills of her chef at Samurai Hibachi, while Jason Mele added that “the food at Osteria Toscana was delicious.” Others singled out the pappardelle and skirt steak there. In addition, Mill Pond House was said to have great views, large, delicious portions, and excellent desserts. Foodies said that at Jonathan's, fritto di calamari, organic sea scallops over pancetta, arugula and apple risotto, and flourless chocolate cake “hit the mark perfectly,” while Prime was touted for its sushi and desserts, which were “to die for,” according to Sonya Wilcox Merullo. From Tyran Sullivan, at Tutto Pazzo, “the homemade ravioli was to die for and the cannoli reminded me of being back in Italy!” Barbara Kent added that Tutto Pazzo is “always surprisingly good… every mouthful was wonderful” with “crisp rice balls, creamy inside, fresh veggies perfectly cooked, fork-tender, fragrant veal, al dente papardelle, crunchy chopped salad like confetti” and “crisp cannoli, meltingly sweet.” Patrons have already seen a difference in restaurant traffic, and some have noted the prixfixe endeavor came at a perfect time, making dining out more affordable. “Every night this week town seemed extra crowed during dinner hours,” Chrissy Schimmel wrote. “In a time where people are struggling, I am so thankful to Huntington for not only housing some of Long Islands finest restaurants but for making it affordable for all to enjoy,” Irene Slovin added. “For just $24.95 I get to eat at a five-star restaurant.” Slovin also touted Panama Hatties for it’s “incredible food... impeccable service... and sophisticated atmosphere.” More than 50 restaurants are participating in Dine Huntington Restaurant Week. Restaurants are serving a three-course menu for $24.95, per person plus tax and tip in a program designed to bring restaurants new customers and delight the palates of diners. Dine Huntington Restaurant Week is presented by the Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce and Long Islander Newspapers with support from chief sponsor Lexus of Massapequa. Menus are online at www.Dine Huntington.com.

Toast To Life At Porto Vivo Chef’s Table By Peter & Mike/foodie@longislandernews.com

Since opening at the end of August, Porto Vivo (7 Gerard St., Huntington 631-385-8486 www.porto-vivo.com) has established itself as a deserving contender on the Huntington hot list. Its stunning, multi-level contemporary interior has made a former antiques warehouse inviting. Able hands – indeed, well qualified ones – in the kitchen, have made even discerning diners take notice. And a host of celebrity sightings – from Billy Joel to Serena Williams to chef Todd English – have made for plenty of buzz. Heck, even the owner’s a celebrity of sorts. Joy Mangano is a personality very familiar to fans of the Home Shopping Network where her Huggable Hangers (250 million sold) and Miracle Mop are top sellers. Now Porto Vivo co-owner – Mangano’s Swiss-born, European-kitchen-trained son-in-law, Philipp Seipelt – wants to showcase the restaurant’s impeccable kitchen credentials. Toward that end, Seipelt recently hosted “Chef’s Table,” an intimate food and wine experience that gave diners the ultimate insider’s experience of Porto Vivo. Although Porto Vivo’s rustic Italian menu is designed to give guests freedom of economic choice (entrees range from $14 to $48), the Chef’s Table menu was pure luxe – a six-course parade that showcased the kitchen’s creativity. The evening started in the restaurant’s cozy, bottle-lined wine cellar, where more than a dozen guests sipped a light Italian Pinot Grigio while Seipelt talked about the restaurant. From there, the group moved upstairs to the kitchen. It’s a busy kitchen made lively by Executive Chef Steven Lecchi barking out orders and staff ferrying dishes to the dining room. Here, Lecchi and Consulting Chef John Doherty presented the next course – a warm roasted butternut squash flan flavored with garlic and porcini mushroom, topped with tomato and theatrically served in an eggshell from which guests scooped the earthy treat with little spoons. The autumnal flavor was enhanced with pumpkin ale from Southampton Brewery, and continued with the second course: whole wheat linguine with roasted chestnuts and ricotta salata shavings. From there the group moved to the main dining room where Seipelt oversaw the procession of dishes. A trio of appetizers featured the best of the sea. Bay scallop “crudo” – some call it Italian sushi – was a pleasant mingling of scallopy sweetness and lemony acid, and baked razor clam was an elegant twist on a restaurant standby. The star was a single Blue Point Oyster topped with an icy pomegranate granita, and all was complemented by a bit of bubbly: Freixenet Cordon Negro Extra Dry from Spain. Sea-spray cool turned to earthy warmth with the next course. Goat cheese gnocchi in rich parmesan cream was a melt-in-your-mouth (like marshmallows without the sweetness) treat made ever-so-much richer with generous shavings of white truffle. The wine, 1992 Marchesi di Gresy Barbaresco from Piedmont, Italy, brought a velvety and rich finish. Finally, the meal moved to a full depth of flavor with coriander and orange dusted venison tenderloin and braised venison short ribs served with a 2004 Rockblock Syrah from Del Rio Vineyard in Oregon. The venison was rich, not at all gamey; the wine stood up to its bold flavors. http://www.longislandernews.com/features/foodie185.html

flavors. Dessert – an aromatic apple parfait accompanied by apple zeppole with cinnamon whipped cream – continued the fall theme, as did the accompanying Samuel Smith’s organic cider from England. Whether it was the wine accompaniments that enhanced the meal or the other way around, we were dazzled. The classically trained Seipelt, who oversees the restaurant’s wine list, said he would like to make the Chef’s Table experience – including the kitchen courses – available to patrons. Pray he does and sign yourself up.

A Year Of Dining In Huntington By The Foodies/ foodie@longislandernews.com

2009 was full of surprises for Huntington’s culinary world. We bid farewell to some old friends, said hello to a few new ones, and sought out some of the best deals in town. We also embarked on the Town’s first Restaurant Week to showcase all that the “Little Apple” has to offer. The result? A year of new adventures in the foodie business. New Kids On The Block Huntington welcomed several new restaurants to town this year, with Blond and Porto Vivo and La Bottega in Huntington village among the ranks. Less than seven months old, Blond (335 Main St., Huntington 631-424-6300 www.blondrestaurant.com) boasts a New American menu incorporating strong flavors like wasabi, pesto and goat cheese masterfully used by Blond’s chefs. Approachable but sleek, the restaurant is warm and inviting, with carpeting, a fireplace, tables and fancy booths against walls of creams and wine colors. The work of owner and executive chef Sam Nelovic and head chef Seth Sloan, our favorite dishes included yellow fin tuna tar-tar, served raw atop a crispy wonton square, and sautéed chicken breast Napoleon with vegetable ratatouille, roasted tomatoes, goat cheese and herb chicken demi. And who can leave Blond without dessert? The fried Oreo shot stole our hearts, simply for the uniqueness of it. An Oreo cookie dipped in batter and fried, it is served atop a shot glass of milk. It’s small, it’s delicious, it’s $2 – it’s perfect. Since opening at the end of August, Porto Vivo (7 Gerard St., Huntington 631-385-8486 www.porto-vivo.com) has established itself as a deserving contender on the Huntington hot list, with an Italian menu designed to give guests freedom of economic choice (entrees range from $14 to $48). Owned by Joy Mangano of Home Shopping Network fame and her Swissborn, European-kitchen-trained son-in-law, Philipp Seipelt, the restaurant’s stunning, multi-level contemporary interior has made a former antiques warehouse inviting, and a host of celebrity sightings – from Billy Joel to Serena Williams to chef Todd English – have made for plenty of buzz. At a “Chef’s Table” food and wine experience showcasing the kitchen’s creativity, executive chef Steven Lecchi and consulting chef John Doherty presented a warm, roasted butternut squash flan flavored with garlic and porcini mushroom theatrically served in an eggshell, and the star: a single Blue Point Oyster topped with an icy pomegranate granite. Coriander and orange dusted venison tenderloin and braised venison short ribs were delightful. La Bottega (9 Wall St., Huntington 631-271-3540) boasts 68 panini, but that’s far from the whole show. Greenlawn’s Joe Quirke co-owns the Huntington location with his wife Phyllis, Raymond Polito and his wife Rose. Entrees, salads and pasta dishes are generous and tasty, making this a great stop. Fine Dining Café Buenos Aires (23 Wall St., Huntington 631-603-3600 www.cafe buenosaires.net) is where food and culture converge in an experience that can be described as exotic, delicious, unique and enticing. The face of the restaurant is Argentina-born Hugo Garcia, whom we

like to call Huntington’s unofficial Argentinean ambassador. With a glass of sangria in hand, we love the corn empanadas, grilled lobster and filet of anything inside a puffed pastry over risotto. The four-cheese fondue with bread and assorted meat skewers is definitely a dish to order at the bar with friends. A crepe filled with dulce de leche from Argentina served with bananas is a standout dessert. La Spada (315 Walt Whitman Rd., Huntington Station 631-549-3033 www.laspadarestaurant.com) is not your typical Italian restaurant. With a portion of the menu dedicated to grilled specialties and an emphasis on “fresh and simple,” the restaurant caters to those seeking a high-end Italian dining experience. Owned by Joe Tamburello, of East Northport, and his partner, chef Emilio Valle, the restaurant’s stars include bruschetta, Arrosticini - grilled lamb shiskabobs – and a pork chop topped with spinach and gorgonzola. Recession Busters Five Guys Burgers and Fries (350 Rte. 110, Huntington Station 631-271-4144 www.fiveguys.com) brings big juicy burgers to town in a jiffy. The portions are ample and affordable, and despite your good intentions to have “just one” fry, it ain’t happening. A regular burger ($4.39 - $5.79) comes with two patties sandwiched between a roll with all the fixings your little heart desires; if it’s one patty you’re craving, ask for a “little” burger ($3.29 - $4.29.) We go for a regular cheeseburger with grilled onions, mushrooms and barbecue sauce. The fries are crispy, salty and savory while keeping that all-important potato flavor in the skin-on morsels. We also enjoy Faz’s Tex-Mex Grill’s (38 Gerard St., Huntington 631-271-4333 www.faztexmex.com) sizable Tex-Mex pizzas, and Northport Feed and Grain’s (73 Main St., Northport Village, 631-651-2684 http://feedandgrainnorthport.com) promise of a good meal at a good price, the $14.95 lobster and mussels special and the Feed & Grain Burger. Old Favorites Jonathan’s (15 Wall St., Huntington 631-549-0055 www.jonathansristorante. com) will always be one of our favorite places. We revisited the restaurant many times this year to enjoy owner Roberto Oronato and executive chef Tito Onofre’s masterpieces. As the “ristorante” in the name implies, the 15-year-old restaurant’s menu is rooted in Italian cuisine. Our “must order” is the Fritto di carciofini – tender baby artichokes sautéed in basil oil. Stars among the entrees include the Risotto ai Funghi, a delicate preparation of Italian Arborio rice balanced with earthy mushrooms and truffle oil; Salmon con Favetta, a hunk of gamey-tasting Scottish salmon atop a pile of favetta, escarole and lemon citronette; and Capesante e Carciofini, a trio of seared jumbo scallops with those sautéed baby artichokes and string beans. At Bravo Nader (9 Union Place, Huntington 631-3351-1200 www.bravo nader.com), chef / owner Nader Gebrin’s idea of a great meal is to catch a fish in the morning and cook it for dinner that same day. It happens often enough and when it isn’t Gebrin hooking the fish, it’s one of his network of local fishermen. As far as we’re concerned, fish, pigs, beef, even lowly vegetables, can consider it an honor to pass through the kitchen at Bravo Nader. The pork chops that started his career are still stars on the menu. The crab cake is a generous patty of fresh crab meat with a crisp – baked, not fried – coating and served on a bed – or it is bath – of fresh tomato, corn and vegetable compote. A hearty lamb shank is expertly spiced and cooked to falling-off-the-bone tenderness, while a classic seafood fra diavlolo over angel hair pasta offers the fruits of the seas in there finest form.

Fashion plates: Restaurant hostess style October 19, 2009 by ANNE BRATSKEIR / Special to Newsday

You know the old saying about making a good first impression, right? Well it certainly holds true in the restaurant biz. And while we love the suave maitre d' who greets us at the door with "ciao, bella," and a kiss on each cheek, well, there's something about a beautiful young woman, and restaurateurs know it. "The hostess is the first line of defense," says Brian Rosenberg, who owns a restaurant marketing company. "She sets the entire tone of your visit and pulls the trigger on getting your experience off to a good start." Some hostesses do designer, others do discount, some go for dressy, others are funky - but they've all got style. Still, there are some vague ground rules. "I was told to dress nice and ladylike but not too revealing," says Tanya Narung, 20, a hostess at Four in Melville . "You kind of wing it, and hope they like it," says Kerry Wahler, 28, a manager-hostess at Toku in Manhasset. So here is a look at the fashion stylings of six Long Island hostesses.

THE INDIVIDUALIST Who: Kerry Wahler, 28, says she learned about looking great every day when she attended culinary school in Italy, where the women are beautifully dressed. Restaurant: Toku, Manhasset Hostess power: "It really influences how customers see a restaurant," says Wahler, who's on today's cover. If there's a welldressed, beautiful girl at the front door, they're going to be part of that grand experience. It adds to the entertainment value." Her look: "I have to wear an outfit that people will remember. It has to stand out. Once in a while, I wear designer - I love Anne Fontaine, Catherine Malandrino - but I

love to find small boutiques that only have one or two pieces of a certain style." What she's wearing: Citrine satin sleeveless blouse with ruffles by Ooh-la-la, black skirt by Ann Taylor and Ralph Lauren boots. Style muse: "Natalie Wood combined with Sophia Lauren - earthy and organic meets bombshell beautiful - it's all about those eyes." Style in four words: Classic, fresh and individualistic.

THE NATURAL Who: Jennifer Miranne, 22, a recent graduate of Fordham University with a degree in communications and philosophy Restaurant: Porto Vivo, Huntington Hostess power: "We set the tone for the entire restaurant. We open the doors, make eye contact, give a friendly smile. You want to make everyone feel important and help them have a nice experience." Her look: "We have to wear black, and I think dresses are the easiest things. I want to look cute, kind of sexy but not in-your-face, and I like keeping it simple in good, well-made clothes." What she's wearing: A one-shouldered ruffle minidress, Anne Klein pumps and Silpada jewelry Style muse: Kate Moss. "I'm always fascinated by her wardrobe." Style in four words: Toned-down sexy and sophisticated

DESIGNER DIVA Who: Jennifer Salino, 32, attended the Fashion Institute of Technology and, by day, is the assistant visual merchandiser at the Walt Whitman Saks Fifth Avenue Restaurant: Barrique, Babylon Hostess power: "My job is to look good. It creates an image and it matters. The hostess is the first person you see at the door, it's the first impression." Her look: Big name or obscure designer, she wears expensive clothes with "a very sharp look, clean and cut on an angle." Goes for Diane von F端rstenberg, Ralph Lauren and Jimmy Choo.

What she's wearing: Patrizia Pepe gray dress with asymmetrical hem and $500 sandals that she's had for years; the brand name has worn off Style muse: "Audrey Hepburn meets Sarah Jessica Parker . I love anything that's dramatic and sexy but I like to be a little conservative, too." Style in four words: Elegant, classy European flair

THE BOMBSHELL Who: Angie Montoya, 31, a veteran hostess, manager, avid fashionista and mom Restaurant: Four, Melville Hostess power: "The food is presented in a certain and beautiful way, and the hostess should be, too. It's about packaging." Her look: "Fierce, unique but nothing too over the top. I go for trendiness and affordability and like to shop at H&M and Guess." What she's wearing: Poufy H&M skirt with petticoat, fitted camisole, thin leopard belt and red Jessica Simpson platform pumps with - eesh - 5-inch heels Style muse: Jennifer Lopez. "She's sexy, elegant and classy, and I love the fact that she's Hispanic, because I can identify." Style in four words: "It's about the shoes."

THE LIVE WIRE Who: Ana Rua, 22, a recent graduate of SUNY Geneseo with a degree in political science and international relations, who interned last summer at Vera Wang Restaurant: Barrique, Babylon Hostess power: "Hostesses set the tone and the ambience," says Rua, a managerhostess who is known for dancing at the door. "They should be hip and happening and are the visual representations of the people who are out and about. It's a big deal." Her look: Youthful, zesty and original. She loves sales and finding deals at H&M, Rainbow and Gap. What she's wearing: Flowered frock by Betsey Johnson Style muse: Rachel Bilson. "I enjoy her stuff. It's casual, kinky and cute."

Style in four words: Inexpensive, classic fashion savvy

THE SHOE QUEEN Who: Tanya Narang, 20, a senior at Baruch College studying finance and an avid reader of fashion magazines Restaurant: Four, Melville Hostess power: "It's the first and last impression, and from top to bottom, you should look good. I get a lot of love for my shoes and dresses. People notice." Her look: "We have to wear gray or black, and I like to wear dresses that are fitted and sophisticated," adding that her faves include Forever 21, BCBG and Marciano. "I'm a shopaholic and the main thing I love - love - is shoes. I have 50 or 60 pairs of heels and I never wear flats." What she's wearing: Strapless, layered BCBG dress embellished with zippers, and antique silver Marciano shoes Style muse: "BeyoncĂŠ. I admire her and her style. You just can't hate on her." Style in four words: Feminine, sophisticated and classy PHOTOS: A look at the fashion stylings of six Long Island hostesses. < back to article
