Seriously Creative Contributions in kind for 2021-2022 to the Historic Halifax Seaport

I’m pleased to present on behalf of NSCAD University the activities and events held at NSCAD’s Port Campus from December 1, 2021 to November 30, 2022. The profile from these activites serves as NSCAD’s contributions in kind to the Halifax Seaport’s operating costs and the Seaport Promotion Fund.

In November 2022, NSCAD and the Port of Halifax completed a historic, long-term agreement to create an iconic, accessible, unified campus that will be the cornerstone of the vibrant creative and social district at the historic Halifax Seaport.

Our new home will extend the NSCAD experience into placemaking and help it shape the district into a thriving arts and cultural destination reflected in integrated promotions, spectacular events and the evolving Seaport Animation Plan.

The timeframe for this report is also the first year NSCAD was able to return to campuses full-time during shifting public public health protocols and opertional disruptions. Certain activities and events such as in-person board meetings and public exhibitions have only started to return to pre-pandemic activity levels and protocols in 2022-2023. These contributions in kind will be reflected in our next report in January 2024.

NSCAD is thrilled to keep raising the public profile and value of the historic Halifax Seaport district through our creative and community leadership.

Sincerely,

Dr. Peggy Shannon NSCAD President

The Student Art Award Gala, held on Friday, May 6, 2022, attracted approximately 200 students to NSCAD’s Port Campus including faculty, staff, friends, family, art-lovers, and government and business leaders. Our first large public event since the pandemic created a lot of excitement for the return of and in-person, ticketed event with a private VIP reception. The historic Halifax Seaport was named as a lead partner on all promotional material and at the event, and was prominent on all promotional material for the Student Art Award Gala and other student year end celebrations beyond the Port space.

NSCAD’s held its first in-person convocation since the pandemic on Thursday, May 12, 2022. NSCAD awarded honorary degrees to two globally renowned Canadian artists at an outdoor ceremony in front of Shed 23 with a reception following in the Pier 21 Museum of Immigration.
