2. All sheep to be penned by 7.30am on the morning of the sale, unless breed Society rules deem otherwise
3. Vendors have the authority to prevent any individual (including potential purchasers) from subjecting their sheep to what in the vendors opinion would be an unacceptable physical examination.
4. Selling will commence promptly at the time fixed by the Committee.
5. All sheep are sold subject to the usual Auctioneers conditions and to the Ram Sale Bye-Laws.
6. PLEASE NOTE: IF THERE IS A CHANCE THE VENDOR OR VENDOR’S AGENT WILL NOT BE PRESENT AT THE TIME OF THE SALE, A RESERVE PRICE MUST BE LODGED WITH THE AUCTIONEER OR HIS REPRESENTATIVE, BEFORE THE COMMENCEMENT OF THE SALE
7. All vendors shall be responsible for their sheep until 1 hour after the close of sale in the ring in which they were sold, or until the sheep have been handed over to the purchaser to the satisfaction of the vendor, whichever is the sooner. IF PURCHASERS HAVE NOT CLAIMED SHEEP BY THE ABOVE TIMES, VENDORS MUST INFORM EITHER THE AUCTIONEER OR THE RAM SALE OFFICIALS.
8. All sheep will be sold subject to an inspection. Inspectors will be appointed either by the Committee or by the relevant breed society This inspection is of a physical nature and must not be construed as being of a veterinary nature..
Vendors should note that any entries which on inspection are found showing lesions suggestive of Caseous Lymphadenitis (CLA) will not be allowed forward for sale and the whole consignment from that vendor may be removed from the sale pens immediately.
Fertility cannot be covered by inspection. It is the responsibility of the vendors to ensure that sheep presented for sale will meet the standard set out below

THE FINAL ONUS REMAINS WITH THE PURCHASER EVEN THOUGH CARE IS TAKEN AND THE ASSOCIATION WILL DO ITS UTMOST TO CHECK EVERY ANIMAL FOR DEFECTS.
IT IS UP TO THE PURCHASERS TO SATISFY THEMSELVES THAT THE SHEEP THEY BUY ARE OF THE STANDARD THEY REQUIRE
9. NO COMPLAINT OF WHATEVER NATURE WILL BE CONSIDERED AFTER 15th December, 2025
10. The purchaser shall have no rights to claim damages from the vendor, in respect of indirect or consequential loss such as (but not limited to) loss of profit or any other loss whatsoever.
11. Rejected sheep must be removed from the sale pens.
12. Each lot of sheep shall be sold in the ring fixed by the Committee, and in order of ballot, and in that ring only, and the Auctioneer responsible for such a lot and the vendor thereof shall be bound to see that the rule is carried out.
13. Each entry must be in the sale pen in the section to which it belongs as the last sheep of the preceding lot shall have been disposed. Any lots that may not be ready in the sale pens when their turn for selling arrives, will not be allowed to come forward until the others in that section have been disposed of.
14. IDENTIFICATION. All entries must be identified by their catalogue number by means of a clearly marked paint brand on the back or face or in the case of un-trimmed or longer fleeced sheep a plastic tag around the neck, clearly printed or written with permanent marker. Any sheep identified with a paper label will be rejected. No animal shall be allowed into the sale ring unless its catalogue number is clearly visible.
Unsold sheep may be re-offered at the discretion of the Committee. This applies only to the first 20 sheep or the first two vendors, whichever is the greater, and they can only be re-offered at the end of the sale in that ring and not at the end of an auctioneers run. The exception to this rule is where there are mixed breeds and then it must be at the end of that particular breed. No sheep shall be sold on the Showground by Private Treaty other than those which have been offered for sale in the ring. All sheep sold by Private Treaty after leaving the ring must be booked through the Auctioneer and the appropriate commission paid.
15. Vendors of sheep in the MV Accredited Scheme are asked to strictly comply with the rules set out by the SAC Sheep & Goat Health Scheme

Any party infringing these rules shall be liable to a penalty determined by the Committee and any loss or damage which may be sustained and furthermore the Committee are empowered to refuse entries from any vendor infringing these rules. Notwithstanding the above the Committee reserves the right in very exceptional circumstances to reposition vendors wrongly catalogued.
19. The Committee’s decision is final. In the event of a problem arising or for further information please contact: Mrs. Jane S Smith (Exec. Director) 01291 673939

Ram purchase is not a cost – it is an investment in your sheep business. The rams at this sale have been inspected but how the ram performs is now up to you – the purchaser. If possible buy your rams well before you need to use them so they acclimatize to your farm. Keep them on a reasonable plane of nutrition until they go with the ewes, as it is probable they will have received supplementary feeding prior to the sale. Current best practice would be for the use of quarantine treatment for worms using a product to which there is no known resistance. The ram should than be kept isolated for a suitable period
When you turn your rams in with the ewes be sure to either use a raddle & harness or some form of mark which you should change after 17 days. Check the harness is fitted correctly, making sure that neither the harness not the crayon holder will rub or chafe the ram’s skin, especially under the front legs and make sure the crayon stays in place on the brisket. The ram should be checked regularly to ensure the harness is in the right place and that the crayon has not worn down. If you have ewes returning you will be in plenty of time to address the problem. Don’t wait until you scan your ewes to find out things have not gone as planned.
