Teams from across the European Forces Swim League (EFSL) converged to Sigonella October 7 and 8 for a “Double Dip” event which consisted of a Pentathlon and a Standard meet. Saturday morning kicked off the Pentathlon, which requires swimmers to com-
plete all four competitive strokes (Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke, and Freestyle), plus an Individual Medley. For new swimmers, and seasoned swimmers alike, this can be a stressful swim meet, as a single disqualification will wash away any chance they have had to make it to the podium. This concern was voiced by
Corrine Millis (15), co-captain for the Naples Tiger Sharks and 5th place finisher in her age group (Girls 15-16). “Some swimmers were worried that they’d be DQ’d because they couldn’t’ see the backstroke flags,” Millis said. “The flags had been blown around due to high winds … I myself didn’t have an issue, but can see
why some would have.” In total 12 swimmers would be “DQ’d” or disqualified during their backstroke event. Even with the meet under the official’s ever watchful presence, the Naples Tiger Sharks still did extremely well with 26 swimmers stepping onto the podium at the conclusion of the day. Vaccinate Now to Protect Yourself Against Influenza By Lt. Cmdr. Andrew MacGregor U.S. Naval Hospital Naples
It is that time of year again for influenza vaccines! Influenza, or “flu,” is a contagious respiratory illness. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, flu was associated with between 3,000 and 49,000 deaths per year between 1976 and 2006, and even milder cases of flu have the potential to adversely impact Navy force readiness and mission execution. The vaccine will help protect against the influenza viruses that research indi-
cates will be most common during the season. This includes the influenza A (H1N1) virus, the influenza A (H3N2) virus, and one or two influenza B viruses, depending on the flu vaccine. People with the virus can spread it to others up to six feet away. Most experts think flu viruses are spread mainly by droplets made when people with the cough, sneeze or talk. Less often, a person might also get the flu by touching a surface or object that has the flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth or nose. The flu is contagious. Some people can be infected with the flu virus, but have no symptoms. During this time, those persons may still spread the virus to others. FLU VACCINE

National Domestic Violence Awareness Month From Commander, Navy Installations Command
National Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) is an annual observance that generates awareness of domestic violence as a serious public health issue and the resources available to help prevent and address it. The Family Advocacy Program (FAP) is a Department of Defense (DoD) program that provides domestic and child abuse-prevention efforts, early identification and intervention support for victims and treatment for offenders. Helping couples develop healthy relationship skills is a key violence prevention strategy for the Family Advocacy Program. Additionally, promotional activities will emphasize the impact of exposure to domestic violence on children and adolescents and the generational continuation of familial maltreatment if not addressed. Finally, the observance will feature tools and military and civilian resources available to support and empower victims. DOMESTIC VIOLENCE MONTH Page 7
