01 PROJECT BRIEF

Project Three: “Spatial Experience” AIM To develop an interior design proposal for a retail store of an established local design brand retail space – to place the established local brands on the same par with international retail brands in the area PROJECT TYPE Individual project PROJECT DURATION 7 weeks

SUBMISSION DATE 13th of July 2022 IMPORTANT ASPECT The connection between the existing context & the new addition (the design strategies to increase the visibility of these local brands to be on par with the existing international brands in the existing shopping district), as well as the concept interpretation of a retail design spatial experience (embedded in the vision for the future of Bukit Bintang Street)

SITE REVIEW This project is located on the Bukit Bintang Street, next to the well-known Pavilion Mall, Lot 10, & Fahrenheit Shopping District

As the area's urban design may grows towards a zerocar city, it is envisioned that the land would site a variety of retail brands in the future.

The chosen site will expand the existing fashion culture, with the goal of putting established local brands on par with international retail labels in the area

02 RETAIL RESEARCH

WHAT? Retail is the sale of products and services to people, as opposed to wholesale, which is the sale to businesses or institutions TYPES? ▪ Store Retailing • supermarket, outlets, drug store ▪ Non-store Retailing • direct sell, automatic vending ▪ Corporate Retailing • franchises, chain store

DIFFERENCE? Sale When it comes to sales, there is always an exchange of goods / services for some sort of payment. A wholesale sale signifies that the items & services can be sold to another end client Retail Retail, as opposed to sales, is when a transaction occurs with the end consumer. Here fore, retail goods are not available in wholesale. It occurs on a much smaller scale.

IDLE/IDŌ - (静止/移動) Founded by ZZ Gavin Liu in 2017, Idle/idō draws inspirations from Japanese world views centered on the acceptance of transience & imperfection. It’s an aesthetic sense of equilibrium between stillness & motion.

With both elements coming together, it becomes a balance for the brand

EARLY ACHIEVEMENT Establish for only a year, ZZ had already received an invitation from Highsnobiety to showcase at Capsule Shows Autumn/Winter 2018 in New York. It was also the first Malaysian streetwear label to be invited to showcase at a capsule trade show in New York.

Since then, it attracts consumers/clients from that continent.

When the 2 terms are paired, they form a contrast that creates harmony & overall balance

This combination of perfection & imperfection, stillness & motion reveal the aesthetic sense of equilibrium

DETAILING Idle/ido blends the functionality of the clothing with intricate cut & sewing techniques on top of its thought-out details. They also comes from a thorough consideration of craftmanship, & how these clothes fall onto the body to enact movements in bringing aesthetic to the eyes.

WHAT IS “WABISABI “ ? ‘ Wabisabi ’ - a traditional

Japanese aesthetics It is a concept that encourages us to look for the beauty in imperfection & to accept the more natural cycle of existence.

It reminds us that everything, including ourselves & life itself, is temporary, incomplete, & flawed. The only way to achieve perfection is through impermanence.

“ I believe imperfection is something that feels natural & not forceful. It means when you leave something as it is, it ages beautifully ” - ZZ Liu Idle/ido dives into the Japanese mindset of accepting transience & imperfection.

Lot 06/07 – MyNews (2 lot Ground Floor), connected with Mezzanine floor of Bentley Music (2 lot mezzanine floor).

Approximately within the center of all available lots As the site is exposed to intense direct sunlight, being in the center may provide pedestrians with shading that provided by other higher buildings besides the site building Lot already had an established entity & didn't require any maintenance or repair to be done before designing phase The existing large window on the mezzanine floor may be utilized for a stunning window display With the influence of Bentley Music's exterior façade upstairs, the entire lot appears to be new & well-maintained, as opposed to the adjacent lot, which appears shabbier & more abandoned

The first store in Vietnam of Japanese cheese tart brand BAKE, Joe Chikamori has delivered a retail setting that makes clever use of an unusual elevated building design

WHY BAKE ?

Displaying tarts to passersby is important for BAKE 2. Understanding in the site itself makes the design much more interesting since they worked with the current state of the property with minimal effort 3. This were done with utilizing the property's character which faces a street & has a double-height ceiling

08 DESIGN NARRATIVE THE 3C’s CONTEXT Although streetwear began as a niche interest, the persistence of its rabid fanbase has spread to nearly every corner of our planet, & there is no doubt that the Malaysia streetwear scene has reached a plateau, as it can also be seen in our chosen site, Bukit Bintang. As a brand that reacts to what is going on, Idle/idō aims to be a little different by avoiding the most typical streetwear approach – infusing a more tailored-style of streetwear & of course their identity of being oriented Japanese modernism streetwear. With this philosophy, street fashion may be appreciated artistically beyond people's perception of a "cheap fashion”. Besides, the setting to be highlighted is the Bukit Bintang "street," where streets are the origins of street fashion itself, which is a remarkable element to consider

CONTENT

Based on this observation, it is fair to assert that the site is ideal in harmonizing the brand with the site's surroundings, as it fits to the client brand's target market - the young, adults, & particularly the youth streetstyle circle. Without a doubt, the site has the potential to be an ideal tool for introducing the client's brand to consumers (which is likely, as Idle/idō is unfamiliar to both foreigners & locals). This would also serve in raising awareness of the value of street fashion & the brand itself among the young streetstyle lovers that visit the street. Highlighting the future site vision of becoming a pedestrianonly street, this could be the first step towards Bukit Bintang being a Malaysian street fashion district like Shibuya & Harajuku

CONCEPT

With the core idea of introducing the brand itself – a Japanese inspired streetwear clothing, the idea derives in infusing a Japanese culture into the design approach as it can enhance the potential of a successful retail experience in the Idle/idō retail space. Looking back, Idle/idō had once bringing along the culture of the Japanese people with the idea of a convenience store retail style in their pop-up store it offers the idea of experiencing Japanese culture & lifestyle when the idea of Japanese convenience store comes into play. Since Japan is famous for its own Family Mart & 7Eleven, using them as the concept ideation will not only create a Japanese lifestyle & vibe, but will also create the idea of an outlet that is not within the confines of a fashion retail space, but will however succeed in showcasing the identity of the brand Idle/idō to consumers.

コンビニ Konbini are Japanese convenience stores that offer everything & are open 24/7 a day. They have been a part of the Japanese lifestyle & have their own distinct style.

OBJECTIVE

01 When the idea of a Japanese convenience store comes into play, "Takeaway from: Konbini" conveys the idea of experiencing the Japanese lifestyle.

Intention - to not only create a Japanese lifestyle & its vibe, but also to create the idea of an outlet that is not within the confines of a fashion retail space but will however succeed in showcasing the identity of the brand Idle/idō to customers.

“TAKE AWAY FROM KONBINI” Offering the idea of experiencing Japanese culture and lifestyle, the theme of a Japanese convenience shop comes into play.
