COMMUNICATION AND ACCOUNTABILITY

Whether you are trying to reduce your number of recordables or prevent a good safety record from creating complacency, this entertaining, research-based session is more than just a safe bet. This program focuses on developing the personal influence to make things stick, whether you’re helping leaders and safety pros move change through their locations, dealing with a lack of buy-in on training or getting everyone to look out for each other on the job site. Garrison is authentic – a guy who’s been there. He’s a chemical plant explosion survivor who has developed safety products still in use worldwide. He expertly fuses his experiences and employee engagement research data into key takeaways such as how to build the trust and relationships quickly that make consistent safety a reality. He delivers those takeaways using a humorous approach that will have a serious impact.

Making the Most of The Time in the Field

Safety cultures are significantly impacted by the degree to which leadership is “present” in the day-to-day activities of the workforce and the extent to which they make a point to observe the work practices of their teams. This is best accomplished through regularly scheduled safety-leadership walkthroughs. But leaders must go beyond the typical management safety audit and focus instead on leadership engagements with their employees to ensure process-safety integrity with safetycritical tasks. This session emphasizes the differences between management walk-arounds and safety-leadership walk- arounds, explores the common causes of missed leadership opportunities during these walk-throughs, suggests the DOs and DON’Ts of intelligence-gathering questions, and lays out a strategy for maximizing our time during these walk-throughs.

In this session you will learn:

• How to schedule your walk-throughs more strategically

• Common mistakes that create an atmosphere of distrust

• How to come across as a leader instead of a manager

• The importance of relationship-building during these walk-throughs

• How to ask intelligence-gathering questions to determine comfort levels with the job

Safety Tensioning

Working in Health and Safety can be very challenging and rewarding. Helping others to become safer in their personal and professional lives can provide personal satisfaction and a noble sense of purpose. However, one challenge specific to health and safety is the idea that it is a thankless profession. How does someone fully learn about, measure or count incidents, like injuries or property damage, that never materialize? How is it possible for someone to gain internal satisfaction through knowing they prevented a negative outcome when that outcome doesn’t arrive? As professionals, we receive an internal satisfaction from knowing we made a difference in the lives of others. When we are too good at our job, the difference we make can go unnoticed or overshadowed by incidents that do occur. So how can a Safety Professional overcome the disheartening impact from a lack of recognition or even thanklessness to find inspiration to keep going. What can we do to rediscover our inspiration and stay on our chosen professional career path? In this session you will learn:

• How to stay engaged with safety when faced with adversity

• How to remain positive and stay committed to safety

Making Safety A Core Value of Your Culture

You’ve instituted a Safety Program, you’ve done all the training, you’ve provided all the equipment. But your Safety results are still not where you want them. Now what?

A crucial factor of your Safety success is your Culture: the way you do what you do, the way people show up, “the way things are around here.” Even with all the right skills and tools, the environment people work in will often determine how safe they are.

In this presentation, the importance of your Culture will be explained— how it affects your ability to hire and retain the best people, attract new clients, and do work that is safe, high-quality, and profitable. At the heart of Culture are your Core Values. The importance of Values, how Core Values interact, and how you can make sure that Safety is a Core Value for your organization will be discussed. The risks to your Culture, how to determine your true Operational Culture, how to lead, maintain, and strengthen the Culture you really want will all be discussed during this session.

Learning Outcomes:

• An understanding of Culture and how it affects people, processes and the workplace.

• The ability to identify and avoid risks to the Culture.

• The importance of making Safety a Core Value.

• The ability to identify gaps between the Desired Culture and the Operational Culture.

• Specific Action Steps to strengthen Culture.

A native of North Dakota, Jason Uhlir grew up in a farming family in rural Grand Forks. While attending UND, Jason got his first dose of “safety” working in the UND Safety and Environmental Health Department as a student.

Jason earned a Bachelor of Science degree with majors in Occupational Safety/Environmental Health as well as Industrial Technology. He began working full time as the Hazardous Materials Coordinator for UND. His campus career developed into the position of Director of Safety and Environmental Health/Risk Management, and eventually the Director of Campus Safety and Security, where he provided leadership to the following departments: Safety & Environmental Health/Risk Management, Campus Police, Parking Services, Transportation (Fleet), and Campus Card/Access Systems. In total, Uhlir spent over 20 years working in safety at UND.

Currently Uhlir works for Minnkota Power, a Grand Forks – based electrical generation and transmission cooperative, with a lignite-fired generation plant near Center, ND. During his time at Minnkota Power, Jason has consistently led the Safety programs for the organization. While safety has always being his primary focus, Uhlir feels fortunate to have had such a broad range of responsibilities and experiences during his career.

Jason currently resides in GF with his wife and two daughters. His hobbies include lake time with the family, hunting/fishing, music and working on classic automobiles
