MARYLAND PRIMARY WINS STRATFORD WATERFRONT DESIGN CHALLENGE Schools across Newham were invited to design a piece of street furniture for the parkland area at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

Two teams of Maryland Primary School pupils were chosen to present at the final to a panel of design experts, beating off competition from over 30 other primary schools.

The designs chosen were a solar flower street light and a park bench in the shape of a swan.

Architects and representatives from the V&A and London School of Fashion chose the tulip street lamp as the winner. This was due to the t e a m’ s c o n s i d e ra t i o n o f materials, the surrounding area and the design process.

The winning prize

The winning design included solar panels to generate energy and built in PA system for visitors to listen to music or hear public announcements.

Layla Conway, the Senior Communities and Business Manager described their ideas as ‘genius.’

The school was awarded a cash prize and the winning street lamp will be made for the park as part of the redevelopment of Stratford Waterfront.

Miss Davy, Assistant Headteacher and Miss Charlery, Art & Design lead, both organised Maryland’s entries and described being extremely proud of the pupils’ effort.

LEARNING BY QUESTIONS AT SELWYN Over the past year, the Year 6 team at Selwyn Primary School have been trialling the new interactive cloud based software: Learning by Questions (LbQ).

This intriguing new resource caught the eye of Sir Kevan Collins (Chief Executive of the Education Endowment Fund) and Dr Tim Coulson (CEO of Samuel Ward Trust).

NPW contacted schools to promote LbQ's feedback project and Selwyn were one of the schools that were eager to take part. The software was initially used to supplement maths, but has since developed to also support English and science teaching.

Both were invited to Selwyn Primary school by LBQ creator and founder of Promethean Tony Cann CBE, which prompted them to see LbQ in action.

The ever growing database contains questions assigned to individual learning objectives. These include adding fractions with the same denominator, identifying statements, questions and commands.

Once the teacher has chosen the set question, they can generate a code for the pupils to input on their devices (iPad, Chromebooks etc). Pupils then work their way through the questions, with all their responses instantly sent to the teacher's device, allowing for fast & accurate assessments and interventions.

Sir Kevin Collins commented: “It's wonderful to see great teachers at work and brilliant children engaged in challenging work. Visiting Selwyn has been a delight.”

Dr Tim Coulson added: “Great to see children understanding how to use the feedback when they answered a question incorrectly”.

A real integration is planned for the next academic year, where LbQ will be used more regularly across the school.

This will be to raise engagement and progress of the students as well as save planning time for the teachers.

REFUGEE MUSIC PROJECT AT ESSEX PRIMARY Songs were sung and stories were told at Essex Primary School during their 'Refugee music project', in recognition of refugees around the world.

From the oppression of Jews in Poland in the early 19th Century to the recent troubles in Syria, the concert remembered and honoured those involved in conflict and oppression.

This was celebrated by the diverse cultures at Essex Primary School.

Year five pupil Aamir Motala told the audience: “We created this project because we are all from different countries, cultures and religions. It shows how everyone together creates something incredible.�
