The awards celebrate the top employers and training providers for school leavers on apprenticeship programmes. It is the largest ranking of employers that offer the best apprenticeship and school leaver opportunities in the UK, and, crucially, helps young people and their influencers make key decisions about their career. The majority of the shortlists are generated by the feedback gathered from apprentices currently working at an organisation. The nominations include high profile names from the banking and finance world, real estate and property giants, trailblazers in IT & tech and leaders of the legal sector and engineering. All have been nominated due to their ground-breaking work in developing and running school leaver opportunities: Intermediate Apprenticeships, Advanced Apprenticeships, Higher Apprenticeships, Degree Apprenticeships and school leaver programmes. NPTC Group of Colleges took the top place in Wales for all categories and out of the whole of the UK it was ranked as second for teaching; fourth for the learning experience; fifth in providing personal support and 10th for assessments and feedback. CEO of NPTC Group of Colleges, Mark Dacey said: “To be named as the top training provider in Wales and one of the best in the UK is impressive stuff, but when it’s something that our students have voted for independently, that makes it even more special. We had no input and haven’t spent time applying for this, so this is really great news for us and testimony to the hard work and dedication of the staff at NPTC Group of Colleges.” *School Leaver Guide 2019 https://www.allaboutschoolleavers.co.uk/training-provider-rankings

Student Success Amber Rogers

Pathology Apprentice, Singleton Hospital, Abertawe Bro Morgannwg (ABMU) Amber, 22 from Llanelli began her career in the healthcare sector on the level 3 apprenticeship in Pathology Support with ABMU at Singleton Hospital, Swansea and Pathways Training after deciding there was more to life than working in a local DIY store. A typical day for Amber can see her prepare samples and work alongside biomedical scientists to label specimens on the dissection bench. It was this hand on working approach and a newly found enthusiasm for the sector that made juggling other demanding commitments outside of work worth it to ensure she was continue doing what she enjoyed so much, which at times was demanding. Amber was one of the first learners in Wales to complete the Pathology Support qualification and is now classed as a healthcare scientist in her own right, securing a permanent position within the ABMU and recent promotion on top. She is an advocate the use of apprenticeships within ABMU health board and is also mentor to the new apprentices within the pathology department.

"Apprenticeships are great for those people who leave school wanting to work. You get to train onsite, build up your skillset as well as getting a qualification. My apprenticeship with Pathways Training and the ABMU has given me a career I love and opened a world of new opportunities. I am currently a healthcare scientist and will now go onto my Level 4 with the possibility to become a Biomedical Scientist." Amber Rogers

"NPTC Group of Colleges have worked with ABMU Health Board’s Apprentice Academy for over 2½ years and we are very proud of all our apprentices who have achieved their qualifications and moved into permanent roles. For our organisation employing apprentices to train into roles is a fantastic way for us to ‘grow our own’ staff ensuring that they have the skills, knowledge and ability to develop their career with us"

Pathways Training and Powys Training Health board are launching an apprenticeship academy this October. So, if you are interested in a career with the health board please contact us for details of upcoming recruitment events.

Agriculture & Farming Agriculture is more than just farming; it is one of the world’s biggest businesses. There are over 200 different career areas available in agriculture. There is, at present, a very high demand throughout the industry for trained, educated and well-motivated young people to enter the industry. Approximately 450,000 people work in the UK agricultural industry of which almost 300,000 are in managerial or partnership roles within a farming enterprise. Not only does agriculture provide a fulďŹ lling and interesting career choice, it also opens the doors to many other industries, due to the broad education, skills, training and experience that are required! Fonlas Farm in Newtown College operates a 350-acre working upland sheep and beef farm adjacent to the College. Fronlas Farm allows students to gain up-to-date practical experience that reflects the agriculture industry of Mid Wales and the small and medium enterprises in which most agricultural and agricultural engineering students find employment.

Apply Online b www.nptcgroup.ac.uk

The farms provide an important practical resource for landbased and other learners and the Newtown College Themes Restaurant is supplied with both beef and lamb from the farm. The farms also supply both Morrisons and Sainsbury’s with beef and lamb during the year.

What will I do?

Career Opportunities

Our courses are extremely hands on, and also allow you to gain valuable work experience within a farm. In College you will cover areas such as livestock production, crop production estate maintenance and tractor and machinery maintenance and operations.

In the UK, 48% of Farmers are aged 55 or above.* Meaning they will likely retire in the next 10 years, creating a demand for new workers.

Our Lecturers have extensive industry knowledge and keep up-to-date with the latest developments in production systems and IT technologies including drone technology and GPS.

9

The farm houses a range of purpose-built classrooms as well as workshops, cattle and sheep housing and handling facilities. The provision offers extensive opportunities for estate skills and conservation and diversification opportunities. The farm carries around 150 beef cattle, including a suckler herd and a dairy steer finishing enterprise, and 750 breeding sheep rearing around 1200 lambs. The farm is an essential practical resource for all land-based students.

On completing of an agriculture course, students can choose from a wide range of practical career paths within the UK agricultural sector, including farm manager, auctioneer, feed representative, advisory officer, farming specialist, land agent, farm visitor centre manager, farm inspector, and agriculture department advisor.

Many of our students progress to Higher Education either at the College on the HND in Agriculture or other institutions to study other agriculture-related degrees.

Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust Art students at Newtown College have unveiled a new spider sculpture to be displayed in the town, as part of a wildlife trust project.

Students worked closely with Spike to create the spider, participating in a practical blacksmithing workshop at Spike’s studio as they widened their knowledge of crafts and techniques to bring nature alive. Funded by the Welsh Assembly and EU backed initiative “Arwain,” the project aims to bring people and wildlife together through the arts and has delivered creative art based activities and outreach projects with a number of organisations in the past two years.

Local artist and blacksmith Spike Blackhurst then took the chosen design forward to completion and installation of the spider, which will now be based at Oriel Davies in Newtown’s Town Hall Gardens.

Partners and businesses involved gathered with students and the trust for the launch at the end of April, as the impressive design was brought to life!

Automotive Engineering Entering a career in mechanic or vehicle repair means guaranteeing a future of steady work. Slumps in the economy can affect people buying new cars, but vehicles will always require maintenance and repair. If you enjoy meeting different people every day, being ‘hands on’, working with cutting edge technology, or have a creative eye or a love of restoration – then a career working with any vehicle is waiting for you.

The motor vehicle departments at Newtown and Brecon Beacons also have fully equipped workshops with four post, two post and scissor-style vehicle lifts, diagnostic testing equipment from Bosch, Crypton, Pico, Autel & ASNU ultrasonic injector cleaning facilities. The Newtown Campus also has a fully functional MOT-style ATL testing bay and dedicated diagnostics area.

What will I do?

Career Opportunities

Our courses aim to explore a vehicle’s construction and accurately repair damage to the vehicle itself and its body ready for finishing. You will complete a series of assignments and practical tasks carried out in our excellent facilities.

Employment for mechanics is usually with garages, transport companies, road haulage companies or large organisations with fleets of vehicles. At technician level you will perform skilled diagnostic work, including work on electronic and computer controlled systems. The work is challenging and logical, involving a lot of problem solving. In larger companies, it is usually possible to gain promotion to supervisory and management roles.

Motor Vehicle

Level 3 Motor Vehicle students at Newtown College got a rare opportunity to learn more about future electric battery operated technologies, when they got to view an electric conversion of a classic Fiat 500 thanks to Electric Classic Cars of Mid Wales. The Fiat 500 has all the character of a classic with a modern twist. The motor is mounted at the back (giving more luggage space at the front), and includes three battery packs with a hidden charge point under the Fiat badge. The students took a keen interest in the set up, with the speed and power advantages of electric quickly realised. As a classic enthusiast, Tom Watkins, technician at the college took particular interest. Dan Pritchard, Motor Vehicle lecturer said that training in hybrids and electrics were ‘an area the college were currently looking into. This new vehicle technology is going to play an important role in the future of the industry and it’s great to see examples of classics like the Fiat converted, and to know that this and others are available to view on our doorstep.’ Electric Classic Cars is based in Mid Wales and has produced a number of classic conversions which include a 911 Porsche, a 1972 Range Rover and a BMW E9. The business owned by Richard Morgan has quickly grown and Richard said ‘how important it was that students now learn about electric vehicles to support both current builds and conversions. There will be a greater demand in the forthcoming years for this knowledge and its surprising how many misconceptions already exist about battery powered cars.’

A total of nine judges, which included County Councillors and local business managers then challenged the groups with questions on their business concepts.

The competition required entrants to consider a business proposal which included detailing the target customers, type of promotions to undertake, staffing and the issues which may need to be overcome.

Student Success From Australia to Slovenia

Fresh from his efforts at the Commonwealth Games in Australia, NPTC Group of College’s Sport Lecturer Andy Davies has claimed victory at the World Masters Mountain Running Championships in Slovenia. The 38-year-old marathon runner finished an impressive 11th place in the sweltering heat on the Gold Coast, before claiming individual gold in the Master 35. The victory will be right up there as one of the high points in the career of the Newtown College lecturer, who has now represented his country at two Commonwealth Games and the World Championships after becoming the first Welshman to run the marathon for 16 years at the 2014 Glasgow Games. Looking back on his exploits at the Gold Coast, he said: “Once I heard that Australia was the next Commonwealth Games, I had to get on that plane! It has been a successful year for our sports students at Brecon Beacons College, who are continuing to succeed in a number of competitions.

Iwan Evans

Iwan Evans from Builth continues to impress in cycling for Team Wales, as he finished 3rd in his under 18 category at the Betty Pharaoh Memorial Road Race, and 25th overall in an 80 strong elite racing line up.

The race provided invaluable experience for Iwan, who was at the younger scale of riders which ranged from u18 to 30. This is the young cyclist’s first year racing in age category events, having taken part in European and international competitions in between training in Newport.

He hasn’t looked back since, and following his successful career so far he hopes to become semi-professional once he finishes his course with us at Brecon Beacons College. Iwan is also aiming to break into the Welsh u23’s team or earn a place at a pro continental team, as well as moving onto university.

Evan Price Davies

Evan Price Davies from Three Cocks has also enjoyed some recent sporting success, after coming 4th in the Red Kite Challenge at Devil’s Bridge. The keen runner also took under 20 gold in the Welsh Championships, after taking to the sport just over a year ago. He will next be heading to Snowdonia this summer, as he takes on the welsh trials of 5k and 10 mile runs.

Iwan Lavis

Iwan Lavis from Llanfihangel Tal-y-llyn has been taking to the water with his kayaking recently and has been competing well since taking up the sport, and also represented the colleges in squash at the British Colleges tournament in Nottingham.

Clarisse Ann Lamsen

Clarisse Ann Lamsen from Builth was also at the tournament, as she excelled on the badminton court. She followed her previous success of winning all seven of her matches in 2017 and representing Wales in the 2018 National Championships. They are all on course to excel in their studies as well, and we wish them the best of luck as they approach the end of their courses with us!

Apply Online b www.nptcgroup.ac.uk

Pro continental teams such as Madison Genesis, Team Ribble Pro Cycling, Canyon DHB P/B Bloor Homes and Iwan’s Team Wales u23 Racing Academy formed the line up at the race.

Iwan first got into the sport aged eight, with his father being a motorbike enthusiast. After an injury his dad took up cycling and Iwan enjoyed it so much by 14 he started to train seriously.
