ake ovens are found in many eighteenth- and nineteenth-足century houses on island. They were built into the fireplace structure in the main portion of the house, often in a rear room, a rear kitchen ell, or in a cellar at the bottom of the chimney stack. The earliest ovens were placed on the rear brick wall of a fireplace, and by the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries ovens were moved to the side wall.

This change helped to provide easier access and also to reduce accidents when leaning across an open fire. Death by fire associated with cooking remained the second leading cause of death for women throughout the eighteenth century. Today, many houses in the historic core retain these early features, which can be restored and reused for an ultimate cooking experience.

OUR RECENT PAST

antucket—nearly thirty miles out to sea—often goes at its own pace. So this year we decided to embrace “Nantucket time” and celebrate National Preservation Month thirty days later than communities on the mainland in the hope that moving the celebration to June will increase the participation of visitors and our part-time residents.

As we prepare for the month’s featured film, Built on N ­ arrow Land— which tells the stories of important mid-twentieth c­ entury ­architecture on Cape Cod—we decided to explore the i­sland’s own mid-century past. Although Nantucket is known for its collection of eighteenthand nineteenth-century structures, the ­International Style and its ­influences touched the island. Some of these relics of our near past have been preserved and others lost. Here are two examples.

71 Baxter Road contrasts vividly with the earlier Victorian and Shingle Style houses along the North Bluff of Siasconset. The unornamented one-story, L-shaped house with the wide chimney and flat roof looks as if it might date to the 1960s, but it was built for Judge Jesse B. and Caroline Cunningham of Philadephia in the summer of 1939. It is one of the first modern houses on island, with a distinctive design characteristic known as the International Style of architecture. Threatened by its location on the eroding bluff, the house was moved closer to the road and reconfigured with a smaller footprint and a new second level designed in the spirit of the early house.

LOST The Geodesic Dome Situated off Cliff Road adjoining the Tupancy Links, this unusual structure was built by Dr. Richard Morgan of South Lincoln, Massachusetts, in 1960.

(Curiously, nearby in Lincoln, was the home of Walter Gropius, founder of the Bauhaus School.) A newspaper account at the time described Nantucket’s Geodesic Dome as “a most unusual and modernistic type house now being assembled by local builder James Lamb of Wauwinet.” That year, professional photographer Michael Vaccaro photographed its construction and the completed house for Look magazine. Geodesic-dome houses were still rare at the time—Buckminster Fuller had patented the house type in 1954 (although the concept originated in 1922 in Germany). It was not until after the 1964 World’s Fair that the geodesic-dome house became popular nationwide, reaching its peak production in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Although many would look at the house at 55 Union Street and think it was beyond repair, preservationists and business partners Michelle Elzay and Pen Austin saw the potential for restoring one of the island’s untouched houses.

Learning its history has helped to guide their careful restoration and puts their finds into context.

The house at 55 Union Street was built in 1835 by John B. Nicholson, a house carpenter who constructed dozens of dwellings throughout the downtown area during Nantucket’s whaling heyday. The history of the site, however, goes back further than the 1830s. A recent ­records search revealed that the lot was a part of land owned by Essex ­Boston, described in deeds as “a man of colour,” whose occupation was cordwainer (shoemaker). An 1821 deed notes that Essex Boston sold property, including the present 55 Union Street, to John and Davis ­Gorham, house carpenters, who eventually divided the land as house lots. The present property was described as the south end of Boston’s land with the “dwelling house and outbuildings thereon” that was sold to Peleg Macy for $51. Ten years later, Macy sold the property to Nicholson for $66 with no buildings noted—perhaps due to their removal or their poor condition.

How Essex Boston acquired the property has not been discovered.

The earliest record found for Essex is a 1760 manumission paper recorded at the Registry of Deeds that reveals he was born on July 8, 1741—one of seven children of Boston and Maria owned by William Swain. Swain freed Essex’s parents at that time, but noted that the oldest children, including Essex, would be set free when they reached the age of twenty-eight. By 1770, Essex Boston, at age twenty-nine, had married Tabitha Cuff. They would have six children. Essex appears to have become a leader in the community; his name is found in documents representing others in the community as well as his own land transactions. Although no record of her death could be found, Tabitha must have died by 1803, the year Essex married Sable (Sybil) Littlefield. It is unclear where Essex Boston lived or where his shoemaker’s shop was located. The land at 55 Union Street may have been purchased for speculation or part of the property he received from 15

his father, who lived nearby and whose brother, Seneca, held 27 York Street, now known as the Boston-Higginbotham House.

The mysterious deed notation for a building on site has recently been confirmed by physical evidence found by Austin during the restoration.

Eighteenth-century construction methods were used for building the fireplace, and numerous artifacts of an earlier period suggest activity at the site well before Nicholson’s ownership. Nicholson may have reused elements of the earlier structure, as was often the practice on island. His new structure, however, was designed in the fashion of the time—the Typical Nantucket House with a kitchen ell. The dwelling was elegantly detailed, employing a spacious entry hall and elements such as Greek Revival mantels that are found in only the most sophisticated examples of the style. Here, too, Nicholson added a clapboard front (recently restored), dentil moldings, and windows with exterior shutters as evident by hardware found in the original surrounds.

The first occupants of the new house were Charles Andrews (1798– 1839), a master mariner, and his family. Andrews had married Eunice Gardner (1805–82), daughter of Jesse Gardner, on June 6, 1826, and they had had three sons: Charles F. (b. 1831), Gorham G. (b. 1835), and David B. (b. 1838), all of whom were born at the new house. ­Andrews commanded the whaling ship Lima and appears to have bought the 55 Union Street property from Nicholson soon after a successful voyage and upon the house’s completion for the then-hefty sum of $1,600.

Unfortunately, Andrews’s tenure at the house was short-lived—he died of consumption on June 20, 1839. The property passed to his wife, who three years later decided to swap it for the smaller house owned by her neighbor, James Smith, at adjacent 1 York Street. The 55 Union Street property passed to George Myrick, a merchant, in 1848; Myrick sold it to Joseph Simmons, a mariner, in 1855. By the early twentieth century, the house was once again in the possession of the Andrews family, who retained it until 2014.

For the last sixty years, no one has resided at the house, and it was used sparingly—mostly for storage and a studio. The result is a house surprisingly original and intact, with few modernizations and ­little wear—a preservationist’s dream. Only a few weeks after their ­purchase (from a seller with the foresight to find preservation-minded buyers), Elzay and Austin began the chimney restoration and s­ tarted a thorough building study and documentation process. With HDC approval, major work began this past winter. The work included installation of a clapboard front; restoration of the original classic doorframe and careful rebuilding of the door; restoration of original windows and replicating bull-nose trim where necessary; reshingling; and structural repair to the rear ell. Among their early discoveries was that the Federal/Greek Revival style–house included repurposed elements in addition to the brick chimney, including some framing members. They also discovered that the ell was built simultaneously with the main section—often the case on Nantucket, but rarely investigated or realized. Other finds included an early cistern in the yard and decorative painting on interior mantels, woodwork, and doors. Photographs in the NHA collection reveal that there had been a barn at the corner of York Street and that the house had an uncovered front porch— an element that will now be restored. The work will seamlessly fuse modern conveniences into the historic interior, and will illustrate that the preservation of historic island homes is compatible with contemporary needs. So far, this work of love has shown that an old house— even one in need of major repair—can be sensitively preserved.

Preservation Award recipients are leading the way—­ ensuring the ­protection of our historic resources for f­uture g­ enerations.

The NPT’s Preservation Awards emphasize proper preservation and sensitive new construction, showcase the island’s craftspeople, and celebrate the foresight and stewardship of owners who care about our historic structures and the island landscape.

Architectural Preservation The Architectural Preservation Award recognizes the owner(s) of a historic property, and, when appropriate, one or more building professionals who assisted in the completion for their role in the preservation of the property’s historical, c­ ultural, and/or architectural value.

Landscape The Caroline A. Ellis Landscape Award recognizes the owner(s) of a ­historic landscape and, when appropriate, individuals associated with the property, such as landscape professionals. The award recognizes the careful stewardship or preservation of a Nantucket landscape ­associated with a historic structure or area, or the completion of a new design that enhances the historic fabric of the community.

Stewardship The John A. and Katherine S. Lodge Stewardship Award recognizes the owner(s) of a historic property for their role in the continued ­ ­maintenance and p­ reservation of a Nantucket landmark.

Traditional Building Methods The Traditional Building Methods Award recognizes craftspeople who practice traditional building methods or who have made a major ­contribution to the field of historic preservation on island. Recipients must demonstrate a commitment to one or more of the ­traditional building methods—such as plastering, carpentry, masonry using lime-mortar, or decorative painting.

Historical Renovation The Historical Renovation Award recognizes the owner(s) of a historic structure, or building professional when appropriate, who design and complete a sensitive new addition.

New Construction The New Construction Award recognizes individuals for their role in the construction of a new building that follows the guidelines outlined in the Historic District Commission publication Building with Nantucket in Mind.

In addition to the annual awards, the NPT Board of ­Directors periodically honors those who have made a major impact on ­ ­preservation of the island’s architectural heritage with the Excellence in Preservation Award.

This year, the NPT recognizes preservation work on island in four categories.

THE ARCHITECTURAL PRESERVATION AWARD Nantucket Historical Association • Old Gaol, Vestal Street

The Old Gaol, built in 1805, is one of the earliest extant jails in the country. The careful preservation of this rare example of prison architecture was funded by a host of key p­ reservation leaders who recognized the structure’s s­ ignificance, i­ ncluding the Massachusetts Historical Commission, the C ­ ommunity Preservation Committee, the Daughters of the American ­R evolution, and the National Trust for ­H istoric Preservation. The project team included: Marsha Fader, ­architect; Twig ­Perkins, carpenter; John Wathne, structural engineer; Pen ­Austin, plaster/limewash consultant; Kathrina Marques, ­l andscape.

This brick mansion, built by Henry Coffin in 1834, ­r emained in the Coffin family until purchased by the current o­ wners s­ everal years ago. Restoration work was completed with ­c areful study and included the repointing of the brick u­sing traditional ­b uilding methods and small, sensitive work such as snaking electrical wiring in the plaster walls to ensure ­p reservation of the original fabric. Mr. Tilroe’s holistic ­a pproach to ­s tewardship includes the history, furniture, house, and landscape.

This house was built in 1745 by Benjamin Fosdick. It was ­d ivided into two residences by his sons and has remained that way since 1800. The renovation included the restoration of a fireplace ­h idden behind a later cabinet; retention of h­ istoric w ­ allpaper and woodwork; ­r elaying of historic floors that were hand stripped and refinished; completion of sensitive s­ tructural repairs; and construction of a new wing with the same f­ ootprint of the early twentieth-century addition. reMain Nantucket and Marine Home Center The tour provides an opportunity to view a wide variety of historic houses of h­ istoric and architectural interest with emphasis on kitchens. This year, the tour will also highlight key preservation work in the area. Participants will be able to view l­ andmark buildings—the Methodist Church—and to observe preservation work under way on the exterior of the Coffin School. Both buildings have played important roles in the history of the island, and both have interesting preservation stories to tell. In addition, the University of Florida’s Preservation Institute: Nantucket will demonstrate how new technology can assist in documenting and preserving historic resources.We hope this tour will provide visitors with ideas when considering their own renovation projects and will leave them with a better understanding of the importance of our historic sites and our community’s preservation c­ hallenges.

The Neighborhood Liberty Street was laid out in 1678 as the southern boundary of the ­Wesco Acre Lots—the residential subdivision planned by the P­ roprietors. It did not come into use, however, until the development of Straight Wharf and Main Street, which coincided with the move of the settlement from Capaum Pond to the Great Harbor. The houses on Liberty and Main are among the oldest in the downtown area. As was the custom, the first houses were built on the north side of the street, to allow for them to face south and soak up solar energy. These houses were lean-to dwellings with long, sloping north roofs that carried the winds up and away from the frame structures, such as the Macy-Christian House at 12 Liberty Street. Over the years, the lean-to houses were added to or removed and 29

more common styles of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth c足 entury appear. This year, participants will be able to view a range of house types, 足including the classic lean-to and Typical Nantucket House as well as a nineteenth-century barn adapted into a home for modern living.

Methodist Church, 1860s

Let’s Start at the Methodist Church Tickets for the tour and lunch will be available in front of the Methodist Church at the top of Main Street. Stop in to have a look at this important landmark.

The Methodist Church, next to the Pacific Bank at the head of Main Street, is one of Nantucket’s iconic landmarks. The Chapel, as it was first known, was erected in 1822–23 by Perez Jenkins, a local builder and member of the congregation, at a cost of $14,000. Land for the structure had been donated by Dr. Oliver Bartlett, an influential ­Methodist who resided at 13 Fair Street, the building now known as the Ships Inn. It was the second Methodist church on island—the first being the Teaser Church, built in 1800 after the founding of the congregation in the 1790s. The Teaser Church stood until the late nineteenth century at the corner of Fair and Lyon Streets. The need for a new church became evident as interest in Methodism grew and the island congregation flourished. Jenkins, a skilled artisan, constructed a church with a hip roof (still found below the present gable), in the fashion of the time. But with Nantucket’s extreme wealth from the whaling industry, more popular modes of architecture and fashion caught the eye of church fathers.

The Chapel underwent a transformation in 1840 with the addition of its portico, consisting of six massive Ionic columns and a gabled pediment.

The result was the first true Greek Revival temple on island, which undoubtedly spurred interest in this classical form. Architectural historian Clay Lancaster credited Frederick Brown Coleman, a local contractor and amateur architect, with the new design. It was perhaps Coleman’s success with the Methodist Church that led to his work on other o­ pulent Greek Revival structures in the 1840s, including the Atheneum and the Hadwen and Hadwen-Wright residences at 94 and 96 Main Street (­locally known as the Two Greeks).

The transformation of the church in the Greek Revival style also ­e xtended to the interior—and included a new plan that moved the pulpit from the east end to its present west location. Today, one of the church’s t­ reasures is its pipe organ, which arrived on N ­ antucket in 1859, but dates to 1831. It is one of only five extant Thomas ­A ppleton pipe organs, and the only one that has been in continual play since its construction.

The church also remains the only frame structure to survive within the bounds of the Great Fire of 1846 (the others are of brick: the Pacific Club, the Old Town Building at 2 Union, the Pacific National Bank, and the Philip Folger House). Local lore notes that the church was saved

by Maria Mitchell, America’s first woman astronomer, who stood on the steps of the church to ensure that fire wardens did not destroy it (at the time, ­dynamiting buildings was common practice to stop the advance and ­destroy the fuel of a fire). Fortunately, the winds shifted, saving the church as well as the residences along Main and Liberty Streets from the conflagration.

Today, the maintenance and repairs to the church are conducted under the direction of the Two Centre Street Restoration Project, which serves as the building’s steward. This nonprofit organization, formed in 1995, includes a coalition of church members and volunteers with expertise in historic preservation, construction, finance, and development.

Work continues on the project, and new research findings have come to light in recent years. In 2002, the preservation firm of ­Mesick Cohen Wilson & Baker determined that structural elements 32

of the building could date to about 1760, more than sixty years before 1823. Lumber used in the ­construction is oak harvested from the mid-Atlantic region. This r­ esearch has let to the theory that the church may have been built elsewhere, was disassembled, marked for reassembly, and shipped to ­Nantucket to be reconstructed by Jenkins.

The Coffin School Tucked away on a short side street linking Liberty and Main is another ­landmark anchoring this neighborhood—the Coffin School, now undergoing exterior ­restoration with funds provided in part by the Nantucket community through the Community Preservation Committee.

The Coffin School, the imposing Greek Revival structure located at 4 Winter Street, has played an important educational role since its completion in 1854. The school traces its origins to 1827, when Admiral Sir Isaac Coffin, a veteran of the Royal Navy with ties to Nantucket’s Coffin descendants, provided funds for the establishment of the institution.

The architect of the present structure—the second such school— is unknown, but early records show that the builders were James Thompson and Edward Easton. In 1854, the new brick school opened its doors to the first students with classes conducted six days a week. During its early years, the school struggled to maintain a steady number of scholars, but enrollment increased dramatically in the 1870s as the island economy improved, allowing for construction of a rear addition. In 1898, a poor economy forced the school to close, but it reopened in 1903— working in association with the public schools to offer ninth- through twelfth-grade students subjects such as woodworking and mechanical drawing for boys and home economics for girls.

This program was a success, and in 1918 another addition at the rear of the school was built to serve the growing home economics courses.

With the introduction of electricity, evening classes in specialized skills such as basketry and sewing were offered for adults.

By 1941, the school was fully integrated with Nantucket’s public school system, and classes continued until 1968. The following year, the school became the site of public kindergarten classes that continued until 1978.

For the past twenty-seven years, the building has served island nonprofits for purposes such as lectures, classes, and musical events. ­Today, the building is home to Nantucket Community Sailing and the island’s ­Community Preservation Committee, but is still owned by the C ­ offin School Trustees, some of whom are descended from the original t­ rustees or have close associations such as being former students. Recognizing Nantucket’s Cultural District

T

he historic houses highlighted on NPT’s Summer Kitchen Tour ­exemplify the unique architectural fabric of downtown ­Nantucket. Anyone who takes a walking tour or simply ­wanders the downtown streets can ­appreciate the extraordinary architectural r­ esources that have been preserved.

These buildings are the t­ angible ­expression of the island’s cultural history.

At reMain, we recognize the importance of this heritage to the d ­ owntown’s ­continued vitality. The many cultural opportunities this community offers and the mixture of galleries, museums, theaters, historic structures, and parks within a walkable geographic area create a diversity that brings p ­ eople together, ­enhances the local economy, and enriches residential life.

Last season, we hosted two speakers who explored how artisans and ­cultural ­organizations make communities more valuable on many levels, ­including ­attracting more tourism dollars and tax revenue. The value ­added to a ­community by a thriving creative sector has also been ­recognized on a State level. Since 2011, over twenty-seven Cultural ­Districts have been ­designated within ­Massachusetts.

Statewide, these ­cultural ­districts help local arts and ­humanities organizations ­improve ­programming and encourage ­collaboration. While marketing and further ­exposure of our distinctive community will be the initial benefit of ­designation by the State, it is the hope of the Massachusetts Cultural Council that funding could become available to these districts in the future.

At the request of the Town of Nantucket, reMain enlisted the ­Nantucket Arts Council and the Artists ­Association of ­Nantucket to form a ­collaborative group. This small committee researched the parameters of the ­designation, local ­infrastructure, and ­future management. A steering committee then was ­assembled to help compile the core downtown cultural assets and submit the application for a State designation.

By the end of 2015, if ­authorized by the Town and approved by the State, the ­Nantucket C ­ ultural District will promote businesses, ­restaurants, ­churches, and arts and ­cultural organizations that ­operate within the district. Cultural organizations outside of the district can also be partners in district activities. The Nantucket Arts Council will manage the district, ­including its website and communications about ­activities within the district.

All of those working on this ­Cultural District project believe that this ­ ­designation will help ­affirm the downtown’s sense of place, ­stimulate ­economic ­activity ­particularly in the ­shoulder ­seasons, and improve the e­ xperiences of both our visitors and the ­local ­community. We at ­reMain are ­excited to be a part of this ­project.

NPT Board Member Anne Troutman Reflects on Her Rescue of a Historic House on Fair Street

Following is an excerpt of the interview conducted by Janet ­Schulte from NPT’s new Historic House Resource Guide, ­available ­online at www.nantucketpreservation.org. It is our hope that ­sharing ­restoration ­information and experiences will assist ­others in their own work and encourage and promote sensitive restorations.

Anne Troutman and her husband Aleks dreamed about living in an authentic ­Nantucket house, filled with natural light and ­historic features. So in 2012, when their realtor showed them 41 Fair Street, they were able to see its ­potential in spite of its need for major work.

Many changes were made to the house in the 1960s that would have scared off most buyers, such as placement of flooring over old pine floors, boarding-up of fireplaces, installation of drywall over original plaster and lath, construction of walls to set off ­bedrooms and living spaces for boarders, and the addition of a room at the back of the original structure in major need of updating. But even with those flaws, Anne could see that the house had good bones and elements, such as the original floors visible from ­below and the original “winder” attic stairway. F­ ortunately, Anne’s training as an architect, her work with historic ­preservation in California, and their long history of visiting the island, which nurtured their love of historic houses, helped when making the final decision to go forward and purchase the house.

When it was time to begin the project, Anne chose to manage it herself. But the long-distance relationship from California soon proved too challenging even for an architect with past preservation experience. Within three months of beginning work, 39

Anne made the decision to return to Nantucket to live in the house amidst the ongoing construction. Anne notes that “being on-site had the advantage of allowing changes and adjustments to be made as the project progressed. In addition, it meant that I could have work redone if a part of it was not satisfactory.”

As the renovation proceeded with Anne on site, drywall was ­removed and more historic elements appeared. Anne’s hunch about its restoration potential began to pay off. She discovered the pentimento of fireplaces; the presence of plaster and lath walls in good repair; and the simple frames of windows, t­ransoms, and doorways hidden behind the modern drywall. Years of accumulated material had masked but essentially protected ­ ­original features waiting to be revealed.

Even with her experience in preservation work, Anne would have made some changes if she had the opportunity to do it over again.

A major regret that was also instrumental in bringing her back to manage the project on site was the loss of a historic ­ceiling beam that an engineer had proclaimed unsafe. Anne worried about the decision, and knowledgeable neighbors soon weighed in with ­advice and suggestions, but not in time to save the ceiling beam in place. (It was salvaged and later incorporated in the design of the new kitchen.)

Anne’s advice to those thinking about completing restoration work is to be actively involved and “slow down; plan and ­develop a schedule; learn about the history and evolution of the house; and perhaps most important, seek the advice of Nantucket ­experts before proceeding.” npt

Envision Heritage Envision Nantucket was launched by the University of Florida’s ­Historic Preservation Program in 2012, as part of the Envision ­Heritage i­nitiative, which explores how new and emerging t­echnologies can be used to ­document, interpret, and manage heritage sites, ­landscapes, buildings, and interior spaces. This program is ­supported by the ­Osceola Foundation and the Nantucket Community P­ reservation Committee. NPT has been a ­partner, assisting the Preservation I­nstitute: Nantucket with the program on island.

Laser scanning is a highly accurate and efficient means to create a spatial ­database of an existing site and can be used to generate other work p­ roducts.

This technology greatly reduces the time and increases the accuracy of ­recording historic landscapes, sites, buildings, and interior spaces. The 3D ­laser scanner sends out a laser beam that collects data by measuring the ­distance of the beam to objects in space. The scanner assigns distances to these objects by calculating the time of flight of the laser in relation to the known speed of light. Multiple scans are used to collect data from many vantage points, and these scans are then combined into a ­ single ­virtual 3D ­model. From the 3D model, many types of representational products can be created, including: photorealistic perspectives and orthogonal views (site plans, floor plans, sections, and elevations), line drawings that meet the Historic American Building Survey (HABS) standards, and animated digital walkthroughs of the site.

mark your old house Every year we complete deed research for our house-marker program. Nearly two hundred house markers now grace island buildings, ­revealing the history of these special places—from the early saltbox houses to ’­ Sconset cottages. A wealth of information has been gained over the years, so we d­ ecided to create a database of our house-markers research (online this summer). You will find information on fifty house markers and eventually all will be posted. In the meantime, we would like to share with you this recently researched history of 79 Orange Street.

A 79Brief History Orange Street Antone Sylvia, Grocer, circa 1879 52

T

he commercial structure at the corner of Orange and ­Dover Streets is one of several small, one-story Victorian shops that were built on island in the fourth quarter of the nineteenth century. The first mention of a s­ eparate shop is found in a 1909 deed, but the building also appeared twenty-three years earlier on the 1886 Sanborn Map of Nantucket. Most likely this s­ tructure was built soon after Antone Sylvia purchased the property in 1879. That purchase included the adjoining house on Orange Street. The ­similarities in the design suggest the shop was built by the same carpenter who ­constructed 106 Main Street (now demolished, but the façade from this store is being reused in the 79 Orange street restoration). At his Orange Street shop, Sylvia operated the grocery until 1906—the year he died after collapsing while hanging a bunch of bananas. Antone’s wife, Lizzie, retained the property, eventually opening her own shop where she sold wallpaper. She sold the shop in 1909 to grocer Robert B. Austin.

Christine Harding, NPT’s historian, completed research for a brief ­history on the Brass Lantern at 11 North Water Street. We thought we should share a summary of her findings.

I

n 1842, James Athearn, merchant, sold to Thomas A. Gardner (1804–94), master mariner, a dwelling on the east corner of Sea Street and North Water Street for $3,500. Four years later, the Great Fire of 1846 destroyed the house, and the following year Gardner sold his empty lot to Philander Fisher (1805–73). Fisher, a shipwright who built the present house in 1847, was also a purveyor of groceries, provisions, and wooden wares. However, the general economy of Nantucket declined as whaling declined, and hundreds of Nantucket men and their families left the island for the fortunes promised in California. Fisher, his wife, Mahala, and d­ aughter left the island for San Francisco in December 1852 on the steamer Star of the West. He sold their North Water Street residence for $2,500 to Lewis Wendel earlier that month.

Eunice and Lewis H. Wendel, circa 1870s Eunice, like Lewis was an entrepreneur. As a serious ­horticulturist, she regularly won prizes at the annual ­Agricultural Fair for “best collection of house plants” and she displayed her plant collection at 11 North Water Street to the public.

Lewis H. Wendel (also known as Louis H. Wendell) was a “washashore,” arriving on Nantucket from Stettin, Prussia, in 1833, when the brig Florida sank off the southeastern coast of the island. In a letter to the editor of the Inquirer,Wendel described a harrowing experience that was followed by the inordinate kindnesses of Nantucketers who took him in. “I was left alone in a land of strangers, not one person with whom I could speak my mother tongue.” He boarded with John Beebe and family and was treated so kindly that he stayed with them until October of the following year. His deed for the 11 North Water Street property describes him as a “carman” (a driver of a carriage), but he eventually became involved in raising capital for investments in ships. In recognition of his country of origin, he flew the Prussian flag in his North Water Street garden in honor of Prince Bismarck’s birthday. His 1878 obituary states, that “he will be kindly remembered by all who knew him. He has ever been noted for his untiring industry and sterling integrity.”

The house passed through several families over the next thirty-four years and would not become an inn until 1924, when Eudora Pearl Parker (1886–1962) married to Walter S. Parker (d. 1970), opened the Parker House, which she operated for more than a decade. In 1941, it was ­purchased by Jessie H. Stetson, who ran it as the Stetson House, and in 1978 it became the Brass Lantern Inn. 55

A Stroll Down Main Street

The tour is offered most Thursdays and Fridays at 9:30 a.m. (July–September). A special self-guided tour highlighting the Main Street book is also available by downloading the Locacious app (free).

’Sconset Tour

A visit to Nantucket is not complete without a tour of this ancient fishing village at the island’s east end and a look at its evolution as an eighteenth-century resort for Nantucketers and for the nation by the 1870s.

Clarissa Porter Preservation Easement Fund Clarissa Porter (1939–2012), a former NPT board member, was a tireless and passionate advocate for preservation and had a lifelong love of Nantucket and its h­ istoric architecture. She served as a member, from its inception, of the NPT Easement Committee, and her diligent work led directly to preservation easements on several properties and raised awareness of NPT and its mission.

Preservation easements Preservation easements, called preservation r­estrictions in ­Massachusetts, are designed to p­ rotect the architectural ­integrity of a ­property for future generations. Easements can protect both the ­exterior and interior of a historic property, and they are ­tailored to the specific building and the wishes of the p­ roperty owner.
