History THE HOUSES

27 Lily Street | c. 1799 In December 1798, Johnathan Barney, a cooper, sold just under 13 rods of land on the East side of Lily Street to housewright Malatiah Nye, who ­likely constructed a 2 ½ story, three-bay house on the property s­hortly after ­purchasing the land. Nye briefly lived in the home, but sold the ­property in 1804 to Benjamin Whippey Jr., a mariner. In 1866, C ­ ordelia M. Coffin p­ urchased the property, and it has remained in her family ever since. N ­ antucket Historic District Commission Vice Chair Abby Camp, great-granddaughter of Cordelia, is the home’s current steward, and she holds a deep appreciation for the generations of family history that are held in the home’s walls.Watchers of the HDC got a glimpse inside 27 Lily during the more than year-long period in which the HDC met over Zoom; the fireplace paneling of the home’s front parlor served as an austere backdrop for Abby during meetings. Abby completed a restoration and ­renovation in 2010, creating a larger kitchen and new gardens, while preserving the home’s 200-year-old details and charm.

40 Lily Street | 1900 Gracie’s Mansion, the distinctive Victorian-style house at 40 Lily Street, was originally constructed as a stable and carriage house in 1900, for New York businessman William Smith Walsh. Prior to the construction of the ­stable, the site had the location of a barn, which was sold and moved off the ­property. Walsh, a New York City-based ship broker, owned a house on C ­ entre Street, but by 1926, Walsh had the structure at 40 Lily Street ­converted into a dwelling. Despite its change in use, the house has kept many characteristics of its original incarnation, with beadboad paneling ­intact throughout that evokes the feeling of a tack room. Current owners Beth and Tom Lowy ­purchased the home in 1989 and have enjoyed it as a seasonal residence since. They have filled the home with a combination of modern furniture and an eclectic collection of antiques, including ­sewing machines, gramophones, radios, typewriters, and much, much more. The Lowys, who live in New York City when not on Nantucket, named the home after their beloved poodle, Gracie. They have lovingly cared for their home over the last 30 years, sensitively renovating the kitchen and adding a s­ pacious deck that overlooks the Lily Pond.

6 Gull Island Lane | c. 1800 The Hannah Gardner House at 6 Gull Island Lane was likely built around 1800, as a wedding present for Hannah Gardner (1782–1809) upon the occasion of her marriage to Josiah Sheffield. Hannah was the g­ randdaughter of Thomas Gardner (1701–1784), who built the first house on Gull ­Island in 1739. The 2 ½ story, 4-bay Typical Nantucket House remained in the ­Sheffield family until 1892. Over time, the property was changed and a­ dded onto, ­including the distinctive pilastered Greek Revival-style ­doorway.

Eventually, the house fell into extreme disrepair. New owners, ­intending a restoration, purchased the property in 2015, but it continued to sit idle, eventually being re-listed in the fall of 2018, when it was purchased by its current owner, Sarah Noelle McLane. Sarah is completing a full r­ estoration of the property, working with preservation mason and plasterer C ­ olin ­Evans, timber ­framer Nathaniel Allen, and other preservation-minded ­professionals including NPT Mary Helen and Michael Fabacher scholarship recipients Hollis Webb and Chris O’Reilly. Sarah is restoring the original windows herself, in her workshop on Vestal Street. Despite the dilapidated appearance of the house after sitting vacant for nearly half a decade, Sarah has found that the quality of materials used over 200 years ago have held up remarkably well overtime. When the restoration is complete later in 2021, this house will serve as an example of what is possible to preserve.

8 Gull Island Lane | c. 1750, moved c. 1929 Further down Gull Island Lane from number 6, the so-called Dower House at number 8 was also originally part of the Thomas Gardner homestead.

It was constructed further to the southwest, closer to the 1739 ­Thomas ­Gardner House, but it was moved to its present location in the 1920s.

The 1 ¾ story 3-bay façade presents a modest profile to the street, with a ­transom above the door and original 12-over-12 windows remaining ­intact. In 2007, B ­ oston interior designer Gary McBournie and Bill Richards ­purchased and restored the home. It was purchased by its current owners, Mark and Suzanne Forsyth, in 2008. The Forsyth’s appreciated the home for its ­cottage-like feel and historic charm, but when they decided to go from summer residents to live full time on Nantucket, they opted to put an addition on the rear of the home, to allow for more space for themselves and their school-aged son Jack. Working with architect David Mehlin, they added a sizeable new ­portion to the historic home, while making minimal changes to the historic core of the home and maintaining the look of the house from Gull Island Lane.
