Welcome to Nantucket Greetings, On behalf of the Keeping History Above Water: ­Nantucket committee and partners, I’m pleased to welcome you to ­ Nantucket Island. A N ­ ­ ational ­ Historic Landmark with more than 900 pre-Civil War era s ­ tructures, Nantucket has been an important i­nternational ­classroom for p ­ reservationists for the better part of a c ­ entury. The University of Florida’s Preservation Institute Nantucket (PIN) has been studying and ­documenting the island’s ­historic resources for 50 years. The Nantucket Preservation Trust, a membership n ­ ­onprofit ­ organization, works year-round to preserve the island’s ­ architectural ­heritage for generations to come.

Threatened for many years by rapid growth and development, now Nantucket’s history faces another threat in sea-level rise.

Nantucket’s historic buildings their proximity to the rising sea make the island a perfect case study for this Keeping History Above Water workshop. We know Nantucket isn’t easy to get to—located thirty miles off the coast of Cape Cod, Nantucket can sometimes feel like another world. But w ­ hether you’ve made the journey for the day or call Nantucket home, we’re ­grateful you’ve taken the time to be part of this important ­discussion.

DONOVAN RYPKEMA

Jeff Goodell is an American author and ­contributing editor to Rolling Stone magazine and the author of five books including The ­Water Will Come: Rising Seas, Sinking Cities, and the Remaking of the Civilized World and How to Cool the Planet: Geoengineering and the Audacious Quest to Fix the Earth’s ­Climate, which won the 2011 Grantham Award of ­Special Merit. Goodell’s writings are known for a focus on energy and environmental issues. He was a 2016-2017 Fellow at the New America ­Foundation. Recently, he completed a two-month voyage to Antarctica and the Thwaites glacier where he learned much more than a new chapter in climate science.

For almost 40 years, photographer James Balog has broken new conceptual and artistic ground in one of the most important issues of our era: h ­ uman modification of nature. An avid m ­ ountaineer with a graduate degree in ­geography and geomorphology, James is ­equally at home on a Himalayan peak or a whitewater ­river, the African savannah or polar icecaps. His new film, The H ­ uman Element, is an innovative and visually stunning look at how ­humanity interacts with earth, air, fire, and water. James has become a global spokesman on the subject of climate change and human impact on the environment.

Donovan Rypkema is principal of Place­Economics, a Washington, D.C.-based real ­estate and economic development-­consulting firm.

The work of the firm is at the nexus of ­historic ­preservation and economics. He has ­undertaken assignments for public and non-profit sector clients in 49 US states. He also teaches a course on the ­economics of historic preservation at the ­University of ­Pennsylvania where he received the 2008 G. Holmes P ­ erkins Award for Distinguished Teaching. ­Rypkema was educated at Columbia University ­receiving a Master of Science degree in Historic ­Preservation.
