Your clothes dryer has no doubt been working hard the past few months and is likely in need of some attention to continue to run safely and efficiently. If you’ve been a little lax about regularly sweeping or vacuuming around your machine, now is a good time to catch up. (Friendly reminder: Always remove lint from the lint screen before every load!) In addition to this general upkeep, you should thoroughly clean the dryer vent at least once a year. Lint buildup not only makes your laundry take longer to dry, but it’s also a fire hazard.

Ceiling fans are notorious dust-collectors and sitting stationary for a few months really gives dirt a chance to settle. Fortunately, giving your fan a quick clean before you turn it on for the season is simple.

One way is to tackle dust with an extendable, microfiber duster. Before you start, put a sheet on the floor or over any furniture beneath the fan to catch wayward dust balls. The wall covering you choose can make a room appear bigger, warmer and brighter (or vice versa) and even hide imperfect elements. So it makes sense to spend a little time consider the best option for your walls and for your house.

When planning the space, consider the size and direction of doors, appliances and cabinets. Fridges often need wide clearance, as do ovens. Take a walk through the space and plan door openings to ensure that you don’t create a cramped kitchen.

4. BUY AN ISLAND (OR TWO).

In a big room, two islands are often better than one. It’s a mistake to supersize an island, because anything longer than 10 feet is hard to walk around. Plan for interactive space in your new kitchen – whether that’s a corner nook, island with seating or a banquette.

First and foremost, make sure the house has a great foundation. Just recently, my son was thinking of buying an old house and he sent me a photo of a diagonal crack extending from the corner of a basement window down to the floor. The house was almost 100 years old. The crack was less than 1/16 inch in width, there was no evidence of water seepage and the concrete was not o set.

What I lacked was a comprehensive checklist that would have helped me identify possible trouble spots and definite dealbreakers.

Building a new interior wall in an existing house can be much di erent from doing it on a new home job site. When we carpenters build a wall for a new home, we typically build it flat on the floor. nce all the studs are nailed to the bottom and top plates, we tilt the wall up and secure it so it doesn't fall over.

Next, carefully assess the mechanical systems. The presence of cast-iron plumbing stacks needn’t worry you, especially if you can see the cast letters XH on the pipe. These letters indicate that pipe is extra heavy and might last for hundreds of years so long as the previous homeowners didn’t put liquid drain cleaners down the pipes.

If you do see cast-iron plumbing vertical pipes, it almost certainly means you’ll have smaller horizontal galvanized pipes that drain sinks, showers and possibly tubs. These pipes will almost always be in poor shape and require replacement.

Don’t underestimate the cost to retro t your heating and cooling

If there is no ceiling, you can tilt the wall up so long as you orient the wall in the same direction as the floor oists above. ou simply make sure the top of the wall rises up in between two parallel floor joists. Once the wall is vertical, you can then slide it into position under

Decades ago HVAC pros discovered it s best to flood exterior walls with either heated air in the winter and cool air in the summer. That means the return air registers must be across the room on inside walls. I doubt you’ll see this setup on a house built in 1905! If the house was built long before 1967, you can be sure it’s got lead paint both inside and outside. You don’t have to get rid of it, but you most de nitely need to understand how to work with it so you don’t get poisoned or poison a loved one. Even scraping exterior lead paint is an issue, as you can contaminate soil you may use for a vegetable garden. Never ever sand lead paint.

Realize that you can match both interior and exterior wood trim if you’ve got a big budget. Oldfashioned lumberyards in your area might have their own mill, or they may know of a local one that can cut new knives that will create matching pro les for all the fancy woodwork inside or outside your home.

SPRING PROJECTS TO PERK UP YOUR PATIO

With spring in full swing and gardening projects on your mind as you hunker down at home, it’s time to start thinking about enjoying the patio again. A few small projects can take that dull, blank space and turn it into a patio with panache.

1. PAINT THE FLOOR. Plain Jane concrete isn’t something to get excited about; but painting the concrete can perk up your porch or patio. Go to your local paint store and have them help you pick out a color and give you all the prep materials. It’s more time-consuming than hard, but a painted patio looks neat and stylish.

2. PAINT YOUR FURNITURE. Over the winter or after several years outdoors, patio furniture can lose its luster. Sand and spray-paint your furniture to bring it back to life. If you have a big set, look for a local painter who can sandblast and powdercoat your furniture to make it look like new again.

3 . CREATE A SEATING AREA OR AN EATING AREA. ive your patio a de ned eating or seating space with an indoor/outdoor rug. Add a seating arrangement to create an outdoor living space or a table for some al fresco dining in your new outdoor room.

4 . STRING UP SOME LIGHTS. Add some string lights across the patio for great Mediterranean bistro ambiance at night. Add a timer so the lights pop on and o automatically.

5 . PLACE LANTERNS AROUND THE SPACE. Romantic and ethereal, candle lanterns set artfully around a seating area, next to a chair or on a dining table are uber-romantic and create a layered lighting e ect.

6. ELECTRIFY IT. Install a sound system or electrical outlets to enjoy TV on the patio. With Wi-Fi-enabled speakers and televisions, you can turn your patio into an outdoor living room.

7. ADD WATER. Create a patio fountain out of a planter. Cluster a grouping of plants around an urn, pop in a fountain pump from your home center, and you have a terri c sound that s peaceful and can help drown out background noise.

8. GET UNIQUE SEATING. Make lounging outdoors more inviting with a swinging bed hung from the ceiling or a pair of swinging rattan chairs. They’re trendy and will be the seat everyone wants to sit in when you go outside.

9. RE-CUSHION CHAIRS AND COUCHES. Patio cushions take a beating from the elements and the sun, so replace to refresh and update your patio. Mix solid seat cushions with patterned throw pillows for a homey feeling.

10. ADD SHADE OR STRUCTURE. If your patio is flat and exposed, it s time to add an arbor or string up some sunshade fabric that will give you much needed shade and help you enjoy more time outdoors comfortably.
