LOOKING TO PAINT YOUR HOUSE?

Ask Yourself These Questions Before DIY’ing

With the warm weather here, you might be outside more, and therefore, spending more time around the exterior of your home. Is the paint on your exterior chipping or peeling? If so, it might be time for a touch-up or full-blown paint job. Now, it can be tempting to do-it-yourself – after all, it’s so expensive to hire pros, and not that hard to do, right?

Well, not really. Before you decide to go at it alone, ask yourself these important questions. They might leave you realizing you need to call in the professionals.

Do you have the time? Repainting a home can take a full week or two. For many people, that translates to a lot of vacation days or weekends. Are you willing to make that sacrifice? By hiring professionals, they can paint your home during the day while you’re at work.

Do you have the right stuff? The highest quality acrylic latex paint costs more than S20 per gallon, and you’ll also need ladders, scrapers, sandpaper, brushes and/ or rollers and safety equipment. Do you have these items? If not, are you willing to invest in them?

Do you have the patience? While painting can be fun and psychologically rewarding, good surface preparation – the sanding and priming essential to any successful paint job – can be very tedious. Will you take the necessary time to properly prepare the surface before yielding to the urge to paint? Consider renting power-washing equipment to speed surface preparation, or have the professionals prep your exterior for you.

Can you afford a professional? By doing the job yourself, you can save a lot of money; however, having your home professionally painted will be faster and eliminate the need for buying equipment, preparing the surface and doing the actual painting yourself. You must think to yourself – how much is that time and effort worth?

Can you do it? Have you painted a home’s exterior before? It’s tough the first go around, especially if you’re unfamiliar with surface preparation and application techniques. And are you afraid of heights? Look up at the highest point of your house? Can safely paint up there on top of a ladder? You also must have the physical ability to hold yourself on a ladder while reaching out and painting – it gets tiring quickly.

If you decide to tackle your painting project on your own, proceed with confidence. However, should you choose the safer route and hire a professional, there are plenty of licensed and experienced painters in your area that would be happy to do the job for you.

SPRING PROJECTS TO PERK UP YOUR PATIO

With spring in full swing and gardening projects on your mind as you hunker down at home, it’s time to start thinking about enjoying the patio again. A few small projects can take that dull, blank space and turn it into a patio with panache.

1. PAINT THE FLOOR. Plain Jane concrete isn’t something to get excited about; but painting the concrete can perk up your porch or patio. Go to your local paint store and have them help you pick out a color and give you all the prep materials. It’s more time-consuming than hard, but a painted patio looks neat and stylish.

2. PAINT YOUR FURNITURE. Over the winter or after several years outdoors, patio furniture can lose its luster. Sand and spray-paint your furniture to bring it back to life. If you have a big set, look for a local painter who can sandblast and powdercoat your furniture to make it look like new again.

3 . CREATE A SEATING AREA OR AN EATING AREA. Give your patio a defined eating or seating space with an indoor/outdoor rug. Add a seating arrangement to create an outdoor living space or a table for some al fresco dining in your new outdoor room.

4 . STRING UP SOME LIGHTS. Add some string lights across the patio for great Mediterranean bistro ambiance at night. Add a timer so the lights pop on and off automatically.

5 . PLACE LANTERNS AROUND THE SPACE. Romantic and ethereal, candle lanterns set artfully around a seating area, next to a chair or on a dining table are uber-romantic and create a layered lighting effect.

6. ELECTRIFY IT. Install a sound system or electrical outlets to enjoy TV on the patio. With Wi-Fi-enabled speakers and televisions, you can turn your patio into an outdoor living room.

7. ADD WATER. Create a patio fountain out of a planter. Cluster a grouping of plants around an urn, pop in a fountain pump from your home center, and you have a terrific sound that’s peaceful and can help drown out background noise.

8. GET UNIQUE SEATING. Make lounging outdoors more inviting with a swinging bed hung from the ceiling or a pair of swinging rattan chairs. They’re trendy and will be the seat everyone wants to sit in when you go outside.

9. RE-CUSHION CHAIRS AND COUCHES. Patio cushions take a beating from the elements and the sun, so replace to refresh and update your patio. Mix solid seat cushions with patterned throw pillows for a homey feeling.

10. ADD SHADE OR STRUCTURE. If your patio is flat and exposed, it’s time to add an arbor or string up some sunshade fabric that will give you much needed shade and help you enjoy more time outdoors comfortably.

After being cooped up in the house, a patio project is the perfect way to get some fresh air and prepare for the summer months ahead.

4 SPRING CLEANING TIPS

CLEAN THE DRYER VENT.

Your clothes dryer has no doubt been working hard the past few months and is likely in need of some attention to continue to run safely and efficiently. If you’ve been a little lax about regularly sweeping or vacuuming around your machine, now is a good time to catch up. (Friendly reminder: Always remove lint from the lint screen before every load!) In addition to this general upkeep, you should thoroughly clean the dryer vent at least once a year. Lint buildup not only makes your laundry take longer to dry, but it’s also a fire hazard.

To clean out the dryer vent, detach the tubing from the back of the dryer and vacuum it well or use a brush to dislodge any lint stuck inside. Finally, give your lint screen a quick scrub with a soft brush–a clean toothbrush works well – and soapy water, then rinse, air-dry completely and replace.

Ceiling fans few months fan a quick

Ceiling fans are notorious dust-collectors and sitting stationary for a few months really gives dirt a chance to settle. Fortunately, giving your fan a quick clean before you turn it on for the season is simple.

One way is to tackle dust with an extendable, microfiber duster. Before you start, put a sheet on the floor or over any furniture beneath the fan to catch wayward dust balls. If you’re comfortable on a step stool or ladder, try this popular pillowcase hack instead: Place a clean pillowcase over one blade at a time and then carefully slide it off, trapping the dust inside. Use a dry microfiber cloth to wipe dust from other parts of the fan as well as the lightbulbs. If your fan has glass shades, soak them in warm, soapy water and dry completely before putting them back on.

Whether your a place where prime place take up the make the whole

Whether your kitchen is the site of impressive culinary feats or mostly a place where you plate some takeout, this hard-working room is a prime place for dust, grease and fingerprints to collect. Since cabinets take up the most real estate, giving them a thorough cleaning will make the whole space feel fresher.

With cabinets, gentle cleaning is best, so skip the abrasive products and use a solution of warm water and dish soap. First, empty your cabinets and drawers and vacuum up crumbs and debris using a crevice attachment. Next, wet a soft cloth with the soap and water solution and wring it out until it is just damp. Wipe down the inside and outside of the cabinets as well as handles or knobs. Don’t forget to go over frames or trim where grime can accumulate. Follow with a cloth slightly dampened with plain water to rinse and then dry thoroughly with another soft cloth. Use a glass cleaner on any glass cabinet fronts.

Kitchen appliances work hard on a regular basis and even the smaller ones, such as your toaster and hand mixer, can benefit from a seasonal spruce-up. To banish dried-on batter, smoothie or sauce from your hand mixer and blender base, rub the exteriors with a damp cloth. Don’t forget to wipe the cords (unplugged, of course) as well, since they can also be targets for splatters.

ADD COLOR TO YOUR BACKYARD WITH THESE DESIGN IDEAS

Even with the beauty that Mother Nature offers, you can heighten the look of your backyard with pops of color and interesting decor. With spring and summer right around the corner, many people are creating the ultimate outdoor entertainment space. Here are some design tips to add color to your backyard.

HANG A HAMMOCK

If you’re looking to create a spot for ultimate relaxation, consider adding a hammock to a shaded corner of your yard. Have fun with colors by mixing and matching the hammock materials with the surrounding plants, creating an oasis that promotes wellness and health.

DISPLAY PLANTS IN COLORFUL POTS

Of course, plants and flowers can add an array of colors to your yard, but what you put them in can create a unique look to fit a theme or color scheme. Shop for pots with interesting patterns and designs that will tie together your space. Even look for light, bright hanging pots to add dimension and create a focal point.

INSTALL A BIRDBATH

A birdbath offers a unique and natural way to bring more color into your yard. Of course, the birdbath can be painted any color you’d like, but the best part of this feature is how it attracts all different species of birds. From bluebirds to cardinals, robins to chickadees, a place for them to take a bath will cause your backyard to be full of color and life in no time.

HAVE FUN WITH THROW PILLOWS

If you have created an area on your back deck or in your yard dedicated to relaxing and hanging out with family and friends, you likely have a couch or a few chairs. Incorporating throw pillows is a great way to show off your style and add a pop of color. Choose a pattern, color scheme or even different shaped throw pillows to create a comfortable and cozy sitting area.

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT CHOOSING AND WORKING WITH MOVERS

Summer is right around the corner, which means many people will be moving. Some people choose to move themselves, but that can be physically and mentally exhausting and not always worth the savings. Using professional movers often makes a lot of sense. But how do you make sure you’re using a good one? Here are some tips to get started.

Look at publicly available information. All interstate movers are required to be both licensed and registered with the US Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. That site will also have complaint reports for registered movers. Your local Better Business Bureau also tracks complaints.

Get an Estimate. You need an estimate based on a walk-through. If the mover refuses to do so or insists that you sign a contract (or make a deposit) before doing so, find someone else.

Make sure they’re insured. If they’re not, don’t work with them. Federal law requires interstate movers to offer liability coverage for any damage to your property at no cost. However, the baseline coverage is 60 cents per pound per item, regardless of the item’s value. Most movers also offer additional coverage for a fee, which you should consider after reviewing the terms. Before declining such additional coverage, think of how much your items are worth, and if 60 cents per pound is enough to make it right if something happens.

efficiently. Regardless, make sure to get quotes from multiple companies. Look at the Paperwork. Look at the bill of lading, which outlines everything being moved, the origin and destination, and costs. It’s your receipt, so review it closely, make sure it’s correct and keep a copy!

Movers are also required to provide you with a copy of a pamphlet titled “Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move”. Make sure you get and read it.

Supervise. Make sure you or someone you trust is there to oversee the whole process. You can help direct the movers and point to which room boxes and big items belong. Also, if a problem arises, you’re there to bear witness and assist.

Storage. If you can’t move directly from one place to another, many movers will offer to store your stuff. See how much it will cost for the space as well as moving into and out of that space.

Ask Questions Up Front. What is the hourly rate? Is that per-person or for a whole team? If it’s perperson, see how many movers will be present. What other costs (fuel, packing materials, etc.) will you be charged, and at what rates. You can save some money by packing yourself, but the pros can do it faster and more

Gratuity. While not required, it’s nice to tip your movers for good service. While supervising the move, bring some cold waters or sports drinks to offer the movers. Kindness goes a long way!

By following these tips and doing your due diligence on your local moving companies, you’ll find the perfect mover for you.
