There is such a thing as too much pressure

Aristotle wasn’t talking about water pressure when the old Greek philosopher urged moderation in all things. And while high water pressure might seem like a gift from the gods — who doesn’t like a skin-tingling shower or gushing garden hose? — any meter reading over a moderate 80 psi (that’s 80 pounds of pressure per square inch) can lead to major plumbing problems.

Think “water hammer” for starters. That’s a condition brought on by overly high pressure in which the pipes shake, slowly degrade and potentially burst. Then there’s thermal expansion, the tendency of water under pressure to increase in volume as its temperature rises. Which also leads to excess wear and tear.

In either case, the problem usually goes back to the supplier. Short of talking your utility company into lowering its average residential pressure (pretty doubtful, particularly if any tall buildings in the neighborhood need adequate fire protection), your best bet is to install a pressure regulator – an inexpensive device also known as a pressure reducing valve — that will automatically reduce the high inflow to an amount adequate for home needs.

First, though, you might check with a pressure gauge to be sure it’s as high as you imagine. If so, a regulator set for about 50 psi will save a third or more on your water bill, help conserve energy and prolong the life of your plumbing and home appliances. As with everything else in moderation, Aristotle would approve.
