The Vision That Set The Stage.

The dream began in 2001 when the Van Wert City School District was awarded matching funds from the Ohio Schools Facility Commission to build a new educational facility upon passage of a levy. The idea of providing an enhanced auditorium for the schools and community grew to reality thanks to the generosity and leadership of Van Wert Alumnus, Scott M. Niswonger who committed an initial $2 million to the project. Businesses and community members united in support of the vision and a total of $9.8 million was raised in private donations. Six years later from the inception of the dream, the Niswonger opened its doors. The facility was gifted back to the school and both the Van Wert City Schools and Van Wert County Foundation formed a separate non-profit foundation called the Van Wert Area Performing Arts Foundation (VWAPAF). This entity leases, manages and operates the professional side of the Niswonger and equally shares expenses with the Van Wert City Schools. The facility serves many functions and purposes as it is a venue of choice among businesses for regional meetings and seminars, hosts school functions such as assemblies and concerts, and provides a stage for the national touring events presented each year. The NPAC continues to grow in its original mission to be a catalyst for economic development throughout the region. The Van Wert Area Performing Arts Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. It is a supporting organization of The Van Wert County Foundation. It has its own board of directors and Executive Director. Celebrating The Legacy - NPAC Onward 2

Boy In Bronze A young boy with a dog and a dream. The Bronze Statue in the plaza just outside the grand entrance of the NPAC was designed and created by Gary Lee Price in honor of the facility’s namesake, Scott Niswonger. The sculpture depicts Scott and Doc, the dog that followed him to school and waited at the school door to walk Scott home. As a student at Van Wert schools, Scott had built a model airplane for a competition which inspired the action of the sculpture and perhaps Scott’s future in aviation.

The Arts In Motion The stunning stained glass art piece displayed on the southeast wall of the Grand Lobby was inspired by the life giving freedom of the performing arts and is meant to capture the imagination of all who pass through the walls of the Niswonger. “The Arts In Motion was designed and created by glass artisans, Reggie and Penny Buehrer of Window Creations, LLC in Ottoville, Ohio. The piece was commissioned by the Merl & Helen Knittle fund. Photo Courtesy of Darin Hohman Dark Horse Productions

A Vibrant Arts Heritage We pay homage to our past, revel in the present and plan for the future. The Legacy Tree is showcased on the west wall of the Van Wert Federal Grand Lobby in the Niswonger Performing Arts Center. This commissioned piece of art portrays Van Wert’s commitment and passion of the arts in a relief of cultural icons. The Legacy Tree visually represents a habitat for art, music, theater and literature within the foundation of a strong agricultural heritage. CREATIVE COLLABORATIONS The Wassily Kandinsky piece majestically displayed on the southwest Grand Lobby wall is a collaborative work by local artisans to celebrate the arts in the region. The artist, Kandinsky perceived a close connection between music and art. The “Composition IV” was chosen to represent the collaboration of art and music that harmoniously exists between the creators and purveyors of various art forms at the Niswonger.

The Wassily Kandinsky Mural is the brainchild of the first Visual Arts Committee for the NPAC. Formed in 2006 and chaired by Dewey Fuerst, they focused on a mission of overseeing visual art on display in the Niswonger. Because of the vast nature of the lobby space, the committee’s vision was to choose pieces that were large, colorful and bold. Kandinksy’s Composition was chosen because of the artist’s love for music and visual art. It expresses movement and rhythm along with bright bold color; a perfectly fitting representation for the purposed space. Local artisans, and one as far away as California with local roots, were invited to reproduce a piece of the sectioned canvas within a 4 month time frame. Each used the art medium of their choice to create their uniquely finished 2’ x 2’ section. The finished piece of art was unveiled to the community at a reception that honored the artists, most of whom were present. The piece was erected into place by the Van Wert City School’s Maintenance Department and is now one of the permanent installation pieces in the Van Wert Federal Grand Lobby of the Niswonger Performing Arts Center for all to enjoy. - Jane Houg

SCOTT M. NISWONGER THE HEART BEHIND THE NAME “My personal philosophy is best described in the motto of the Niswonger Foundation – ‘Learn, Earn and Return,’ and the Biblical admonition of Luke 12:48: To whom much is given much is expected. Every person has a finite number of heartbeats. Let’s use them wisely.” Scott M. Niswonger

Scott & Nikki Niswonger Van Wert HS Alumni ‘65 15 The Niswonger Performing Arts Center Story

Scott M. Niswonger was born in Van Wert, Ohio where he took his first flight lesson at the age of twelve, soloed on his sixteenth birthday, and received his private pilot license on his seventeenth birthday. During his aviation career, he has flown everything from J-3 Cubs to the Boeing 747, currently enjoying his Gulfstream IV and Navy T-34 trainer. He is a graduate of Purdue University with a degree in Aviation Technology and was awarded a Doctorate of Technology in 2004. He earned a BSBA from Tusculum College in 1986 and was awarded a Doctorate of Human Letters in 2006. Recently, he received the most prestigious award the Federal Aviation Administration issues to pilots – The Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award. Scott moved to Greeneville, Tennessee as the corporate pilot for the president of the Magnavox Company. In 1973, Niswonger started a cargo airline, General Aviation, Inc. After selling General, he became the Vice President of North American Operations for Flying Tiger Lines – a military contractor and global cargo airline. He later co-founded a second transportation company, Landair Services, with an initial investment of $2000; and in 1990 formed Forward Air Corporation (FWRD). Those companies today have annual sales of over $1 billion. It’s impressive to note that he founded the first two companies to ever be taken public in Greene County’s 231 year history. Niswonger currently serves as Executive Chairman of Landair Transport, Inc. and Chairman Emeritus of Forward Air Corporation. He is a member of the Executive Committee and Board of Directors of First Horizon National Corporation (NYSE; FHN), the parent of First Tennessee Bank, a $26 billion financial services company. He serves as Chairman of the Board of Trustees for East Tennessee State University, where he has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate and recognized as an Honorary Alumnus. He is especially proud of the Niswonger Foundation that he established in 2001 with the mission “to create opportunities for individual and community growth through education and other sustainable projects.” The Foundation’s two major areas of focus are the Scholarship and Leadership program, developing leaders to return to serve their home communities; and the School Partnership program, focused on ensuring that students are ready for post-secondary education and the workforce, and providing professional learning opportunities for educators. Scott is the lead benefactor for the Niswonger Children’s Hospital in Johnson City, TN. This hospital provides a full complement of specialty health service to children, is home to a Shriners Hospitals Orthopedics Clinic, and is one of only six St. Jude Affiliate Clinics in the world. With an exceptional level of involvement, businessman and philanthropist Scott Niswonger has made a positive impact for those who will follow.

A TEN YEAR PERSPECTIVE from the Executive Director

It has been an honor and privilege to be the Executive Director of this beautiful facility and operation since day one. The planning and operations for the Niswonger Performing Arts Center of Northwest Ohio actually go much further back than ten years. It really started June 22, 2005. That is the date the Van Wert Area Performing Arts Foundation was incorporated by the State of Ohio. And before that, planning actually began in 2002. Good things take time to happen! What began as a dream by then Superintendent Cathy Hoffman and her Van Wert City Board of Education to build a simple school auditorium, blossomed into the nearly 10 million dollar facility we have today. Scott Niswonger entered the picture and helped us all believe we could dream bigger and reach higher than we ever imagined. An initial 2 million dollar donation for naming rights, along with much encouragement, inspiration and planning, made the Niswonger Performing Arts Center become a reality.

17 The Niswonger Performing Arts Center Story

Many other supporters stepped forward with the belief if we build it, they will come. Scott Niswonger increased his contribution; Central Insurance, Van Wert Federal and First Federal of Van Wert deepened their committments and encouraged many more contributions. Lastly, The Van Wert County Foundation paid the remaining bill with a donation from the Saltzgaber Music Fund and we were ready to open debt-free!

The Van Wert City Schools took over ownership of this beautiful state-ofthe-art performing arts center, which would benefit its students for years to come. To keep their focus on education and academic excellence, they partnered with The VWCF to form the Van Wert Area Performing Arts Foundation, a supporting foundation of the VWCF. I was appointed Executive Director and challenged to form a board of directors and hire a staff. We started with meager beginnings, but with the continuing support of our parent organization, The Van Wert County Foundation, the NPAC survived and flourished. The inaugural season of 2007-08 featured fifteen professional and amateur concerts on an operating budget of $300,000. We have now grown to an operating budget of $1,250,000 and offer nearly 30 professional concerts, with additional rentals and many school events.

MISSION To provide a premier venue for a wide variety of performing arts, concerts, lectures, meetings, and special events which will inspire, educate, and entertain residents of and visitors to Van Wert County, and to provide an economic catalyst by increasing cultural tourism, creating new jobs, and generating business for the region. Through the generosity of the Eisenhauer Estate and other significant contributions, we have been able establish an endowment which helps our annual budget. We are always looking for contributors to our endowment which is housed securely at the Van Wert County Foundation. If you have been touched by the Niswonger and would like to contribute to the ongoing health of our Performing Arts Foundation, I would love to talk with you. We are a 501 (C) (3) corporation. I feel the strength of our corporation has been a stable and dedicated board of directors and a very caring staff. Many of the five staff have been involved in one way or another with our operations since we started. The additional personnel we have added have been extremely dedicated and talented. With a host of well over 150 volunteers from throughout the region, we treat our patrons with the utmost respect and appreciation. We feel it is such a privilege to welcome visitors to our community and lovely venue. As we enter a new decade of serving the region with the arts, I look forward to continuing our growth and influence throughout the region. Our patron base grows daily and we so appreciate the confidence and support you have shown to all of us at the Niswonger. We pledge to continue providing the ultimate in wholesome, yet challenging and exciting entertainment for you to enjoy. Here’s to another ten years of growth in inspiration, education and entertainment. Here’s a toast to a very bright future at the Niswonger. Cheers to all! would continue into future generations. Others had a vision that people like you would come from all around the world to experience the arts right here in our own Van Wert, Ohio. These visionaries gave a lifetime’s worth of hard work to The Foundation so their efforts would continue. We are grateful for many who have and/or continue to contribute financially. We are indebted to those of you who volunteer your time and talents to make sure that all who enter our doors long to come back.

The VAN WERT COUNTY FOUNDATION The Niswonger Performing Arts Center of Northwest Ohio is a shining example of what happens when passion, vision, and energy collide. We are celebrating over ten years of life breathing entertainment in this facility. However, the spark that ignited this passion has been burning in our hearts far longer than that. For over 90 years, The Van Wert County Foundation has been tasked with continuing the vision and passions of those who have gone before us. These great visionaries have looked beyond their years into the future of what this community should be. Their passions have varied. Many wanted to provide advanced opportunities for those who would otherwise be unable to obtain higher education. Some made sure that our rich agricultural heritage 21 The Niswonger Performing Arts Center Story

VAN WERT HIGH SCHOOL AND THE NISWONGER A HARMONIOUS PARTNERSHIP

IN THE WORDS OF THE BAND DIRECTOR I was hired in May of 2002 at a VWCS School Board meeting. At that same meeting a donation was accepted from Scott Niswonger that would officially begin the campaign to build what would eventually become the Niswonger Performing Arts Center of Northwest Ohio. From those beginnings, it was impossible to imagine what this space would become. The strength and beauty of the facility is second to none. The staff, technology, acoustics, and amenities are beyond what any public school teacher could have wished. This facility has allowed us to reenvision how a concert looks and sounds. The Niswonger has transformed our delivery of the concert experience. Each year we push the envelope of lights and sounds a little further and we are still only seeing the tip of the iceberg of possibility. We take immense joy in this facility and are proud to call the Niswonger Performing Arts Center “home. Robert H. Sloan Van Wert High School Director of Bands
