A NEW DECADE OF CULTURED DELIGHT

WE INVITE YOU TO BUILD YOUR OWN EXPERIENCE

Welcome to a new decade of entertainment at the Niswonger Performing Arts Center. Thanks to you, we have become the destination for performing arts seekers throughout the region. Last year we closed out the decade with a Ten Year Gala celebration that featured Bernadette Peters and the Boston Pops. We now look ahead with great expectations for delivering above and beyond your wildest expectations.

I lived over a thousand miles away when the NPAC first opened its doors. When I relocated back home to Van Wert County, I was reminded that our folks have a wonderful spirit of philanthropy. Someone asked if I had been to a show at the NPAC yet. In that grand philanthropic tradition, when I said no, I was quickly given an extra ticket to a show. I was skeptical, because I was going to go by myself. I went anyway and I remember having the best time! A volunteer shook my hand at the front door and more volunteers greeted me in the lobby. I remember taking my seat in the comfortable mezzanine. The performance was by the engaging pianist Alpin Hong. I sat in awe of the great experience that I was having just minutes from my home. That first visit was one of the many reasons that my wife, Anna, and I decided this was where we wanted to put down our roots.

This season also introduces the new NPAC KIDS series of shows. These five shows are bonafide kid thrill worthy, and equally engaging for adults. The NPAC KIDS Series is geared towards providing family options for entertainment that are accessible and affordable from our stage. We endeavor to be a place where everyone can enjoy entertainment safely while occasionally providing a cultural “edge” for others too. We never rest in our desire to serve you better. We love hearing from you and hope you will visit us often on our web page, connect with us in social media, and especially in person. Our friendly box office, staff, and volunteers look forward to seeing you and welcoming you to our beautiful venue. Thank you for making us your entertainment destination. You are the reason the Niswonger shines brightly and we look forward to staying true to our mission by entertaining and educating you from this stage of inspiration! PAUL HOVERMAN Niswonger Performing Arts Center Executive Director

11 LIVE

Our board, staff and programming committee have selected a line-up of performers that will again offer variety, inspiration and entertainment along with informative speaking events to broaden awareness and understanding. The season is filled with headliners such as Kenny G, Kellie Pickler, Olivia Newton John, The Texas Tenors, Broadway’s Cinderella and so much more!

The Niswonger Performing Arts Center is simply about experiences.

A friend invited me to an event that I might not have initially picked for myself because she was so confident that I would have the quintessential Niswonger Experience.

Anna and I are confident knowing that our three-year-old son Grayson will encounter things in Van Wert that he might rarely observe elsewhere. Our days seem to last just a little longer and we might have more sunlight, dirt, machinery, and fresh country air than in a metropolitan area. Pair these and other unique opportunities with the fantastic performance and art venues available in Van Wert and it starts to build a picture of a life that is irresistibly rewarding. What a joy it is to take Grayson to a Boredom Busting NPAC KIDS Show. His face lights up and he is so intent on what he is experiencing in the moment. We have these opportunities only because of the engaging philanthropic nature of this community. What is unique about this is that people typically give because they want to, not because they have to. They made a very real and personal choice to invest in Van Wert County. That is what makes this place so cool. So many people (past and present) have so believed in the experience right here that they have made sure that people like Grayson – no matter their age or walk of life – will enjoy the Van Wert Experience. As we enter into our Eleventh Season, I hope that you take this opportunity to build your own Van Wert Experience. Join Us! SETH BAKER Van Wert County Foundation Executive Secretary

THE BROADWAY MUSICAL

MARCH 3 2:00 & 7:30 PM

It wasn’t that long ago that the concept for a performing arts center was just a dream. Thanks to the passion, dedication and generosity of many, that seed took root and the Niswonger Performing Arts Center became a reality that has enlivened the Van Wert region through breathtaking performances in an inviting atmosphere. In many ways, the Niswonger is helping to change the course of Van Wert County. The Niswonger is a friendly place where memories take place, where traditions begin, and different kinds of people come together to find a place in the arts. Consider what the Niswonger has become in your life. Whether you attended a speakers series event, a Broadway show, or delighted in every performer who came singing, dancing or leaping into your midst, we trust that your experience, like ours, at the Niswonger, remains at the top of your minds. Andrew Lloyd Webber and Director Jeremy Sams made the decision to add more music throughout the show. The additional songs better illuminate the characters. The Wicked Witch’s song “Red Shoes Blues” is a thrilling production number that opens the second act and Glinda’s moving ballad “Already Home” carries the audience – and Dorothy – to the end of the story. New underscoring throughout the show also adds dimension to the scenes.

The design of the show has also been updated. The costumes reflect the reality of Kansas farm life in the mid-20th century, but Munchkinland and Emerald City are a creation of the director’s and the designers’ imaginations. They are a whimsical hybrid of traditional and contemporary style. Glinda’s dress is a sparkling creation covered in Swarovski crystals, as are Dorothy’s ruby slippers. So click your heels together and join Scarecrow, Tin Man, Lion, Dorothy and her little dog Toto, as they journey through the magical land of Oz to meet the Wizard and obtain their hearts’ desires. LONESTAR

SATURDAY . JANUARY 27 I 7:30 PM

RELEASE DATE:10/26/17 OC $50 / ORL $45 / MC $40 / MRL $40 / BC $35 / BRL $30

First Federal of Van Wert presents Lonestar. Known for merging their country roots with strong melodies and rich vocals, Lonestar has amassed RIAA-certified sales in excess of ten million album units since their national launch in 1995 and achieved ten #1 country hits including “No News,” “Come Crying To Me,” and their crossover smash “Amazed” (which was also #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, the first record since 1983’s “Islands in the Stream” to top both charts). The band’s awards include a 1999 ACM Single of The Year for “Amazed” (the song also won the Song of the Year award) and the 2001 CMA Vocal Group of the Year. But it isn’t hit records and trophies that have kept Lonestar going strong. On the contrary, says lead singer Richie McDonald, “Honestly, through it all, the one thing that has kept Lonestar around is that we’re just four good old boys from Texas.” All four members originally hail from blue collar households, and place a premium on the value of hard work. “No matter how much success we’ve had, it didn’t change us as people.”

In addition to “Amazed,” which was #1 with country audiences for eight weeks in a row, Lonely Grill yielded three more #1 country hits: “Smile,” “Tell Her,” and “What About Now.” The 2001 release I’m Already There topped the country album charts, as did the band’s 2003 retrospective From There To Here: The Greatest Hits, which produced yet another #1 single, “My Front Porch Looking In.” For all their record and ticket sales, the biggest accomplishment of the band’s storied career has been witnessing the impact of Lonestar songs in the lives of others. “Music is a very powerful tool and can help people going through both good and bad times,” observes McDonald. RELEASE DATE: 7/26/17 OC $45 / ORL $45 / MC $35 / MRL $35 / BC $25 / BRL $25 TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE is the autobiographical story of Mitch Albom, an accomplished journalist driven solely by his career, and Morrie Schwartz, his former college professor. Sixteen years after graduation, Mitch happens to catch Morrie’s appearance on a television news program and learns that his old professor is battling Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Mitch is reunited with Morrie, and what starts as a simple visit turns into a weekly pilgrimage and a last class in the meaning of life. Jamie Farr is absolutely brilliant. Basketball Coach Jim Valvano once said that there are three things you should do every day: You should learn something, you should laugh and you should be moved to tears. TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE fulfills all three of these requirements.

THE VIETNAM WAR PBS SCREEN PREVIEW TUESDAY . AUGUST 29 I 7:00 PM

In an immersive narrative, Ken Burns and Lynn Novick tell the epic story of the Vietnam War as it has never before been told on film. The Vietnam War features testimony from nearly 100 witnesses, including many Americans who fought in the war and others who opposed it, as well as Vietnamese combatants and civilians from both the winning and losing sides. ABOUT THE DIRECTOR: KEN BURNS Burns has been making films for more than thirty years. Since the Academy Award nominated BROOKLYN BRIDGE in 1981, Ken has gone on to direct and produce some of the most acclaimed historical documentaries ever made. A December 2002 poll conducted by Real Screen Magazine listed THE CIVIL WAR as second only to Robert Flaherty’s Nanook of the North as the “most influential documentary of all time,” and named Ken Burns and Robert Flaherty as the “most influential documentary makers” of all time. In March, 2009, David Zurawik of The Baltimore Sun said, “…Burns is not only the greatest documentarian of the day, but also the most influential filmmaker period. That includes feature filmmakers like George Lucas and Steven Spielberg. I say that because Burns not only turned millions of persons onto history with his films, he showed us a new way of looking at our collective past and ourselves.” The late historian Stephen Ambrose said of his films, “More Americans get their history from Ken Burns than any other source.” Ken’s films have won twelve Emmy Awards and two Oscar nominations, and in September of 2008, at the News & Documentary Emmy Awards, Ken was honored by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

THERESA FLORES “THE SLAVE ACROSS THE STREET” TUESDAY . MARCH 27 I 7:00 PM Survivor and Author Theresa Flores travels the U.S. sharing her story of trafficking and being a sex slave while living in an upper-middle class suburb of Detroit, Michigan. At 15 years of age, she was drugged, raped and tortured for two long years — kept in bondage, forced to pay back an impossible debt as a sex slave — all the while living at home, attempting to keep her family safe. Theresa’s organization, TraffickFree builds awareness about domestic sex trafficking and sexually exploited children in the U.S. Their purpose is to educate students, parents, professionals and motel owners/staff on the red flags of trafficking and how to identify a victim. They work in partnership with other organizations to rescue missing adolescents from becoming a human trafficking victim. Equally as important is to help survivors heal from the trauma of being trafficked and empowering them to become productive citizens. Learn more about Theresa and her plight to stop human trafficking by reading her best memoir, “The Slave Across the Street”. If you don’t think human trafficking happens in your zip code, think again. Come learn more about human trafficking and Theresa’s story and why she created S.O.A.P. Her presentation will bring you anger, sadness, laughter and motivation to do something about this horrific crime. UNDERWRITTEN BY
