The assassination of South Afican National Civics Organisation (Sanco) leader Moses Matiso (32), who was gunned down on Monday 31 March, has left more questions than answers.
The social activist was shot and killed while cleaning his churchyard in Witsand. Police spokesperson Capt Lisa Munro confirmed two unknown men entered the premises and start shooting at Moses before fleeing the scene on foot. She said police members responded to a complaint of a shooting at a church and on arrival there found the victim with gunshot wounds to his body. He was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel, Munro confirmed.
Matiso was elected chairperson of Sanco’s JS Masakala branch in Witsand just under a year ago and was outspoken about crime in the area
The branch said in a statement that he was a dedicated community leader committed to justice and development in his community.
“On Monday 31 March 2025 he was brutally shot dead at his church, located on the corner of Mnga and Mnama Street, Witsand, Atlantis This heinous act is believed to be linked to many criminal syndicates, which have been targeting him ever since he pledged to fight crime in our community.”
Wessie van der Westhuizen, Subcouncil 1 manager, said it was a pleasure working with the young, energetic civic leader who, he added, never hesitated to
ask for advice and guidance with projects, and his presence would be sorely missed.
Matiso had lashed out at a police imbizo held earlier this year, when he said to police management information about extortion and other crimes had been brought to the local police’s attention, but no response was forthcoming
Just days before his death he told in a public meeting with police that he had reported criminal activities that had taken place in his community, but had not been taken seriously
Reports that the young leader had received death threats could not be confirmed by police.
Munro confirmed Matiso’s death was being investigated by the Taxi Crime Unit and no arrests had yet been made.

The determination of Atlantis police to decrease crime in the community and put its perpetrators behind bars yielded positive results when its members arrested several suspects and took illegal firearms and ammunition off the streets.

The 24-year-old claimed he was unable to account for the firearm and am-
munition found and was subsequently arrested for possession. He will appear before the Atlantis Magistrates’ Court once charged To date, 11 illegal firearms have been taken off the streets, and suspects were arrested and have appeared in court.
The station commander, Colonel Mario Thyse, would like to express the police’s sincere gratitude to the community for their ongoing assistance in maintaining a safe environment.

Klagtes oor swak diens by die Wesfleur-hospitaal stroom steeds in.

After years without a dedicated soccer tournament Atlantis is set to host the first-ever Atlantis Youth Cup this coming Easter weekend.
Allister Lightburn, Sub-council 1 chairperson, said this event will be an annual one aiming to uplift young players and re-ignite the community’s passion for the sport. The inaugural tournament will take place on 17, 19 and 21 April at the Robinvale Sports Grounds, he said.
This milestone is the result of a collaborative effort between Atlantis LFA and the local organising committee (LOC) made up of passionate community members, Lightburn and the City of Cape Town.
The LOC’s Usen Jacobs said Lightburn had spoken to him some time before of the possibility of such a tournament and since took the initiative in bringing all stakeholders together to make it a reality.
Also backed by the South African Football Association
(Safa) Cape Town, Jacobs said in its first year the Atlantis Youth Cup is intended exclusively for local soccer clubs affiliated to the Atlantis LFA, ensuring young players from the community get the opportunity to showcase their talent.
The tournament will feature five age divisions: u-8, u-10, u-12, u-14 and u-16. Beyond the soccer action, the event promises a fun-filled atmosphere with live entertainment, food vendors and a strong call for parents and supporters to rally behind the young athletes, Lightburn said.
While the tournament has already secured sponsors, more are welcome to join this exciting initiative Jacobs said. All proceeds from the event will be reinvested in the young players’ development for the rest of the season.
The Atlantis Youth Cup is more than just a tournament Lightburn said it is a move to bring families, communities and young soccer talent together. Don’t miss this historic event as Atlantis reclaims its soccer legacy For sponsorship and general enquiries email them on info@atlantisyouthcup co.za
