A NIGHT out turned deadly in Kariega when a gunman stormed into a sports bar on Young Street, opening fire on patrons and leaving one man dead and two others injured

According to South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Captain André Beetge, “We can confirm that an unknown male entered a sports bar in Young Street, Kariega, and opened fire at persons in the bar ”

Among the patrons shot, a 30-year-old male, identified as Jade-Lee “Jatkat” Booysen, sustained several gunshot wounds to his head and upper body and died at the scene Ward 49 councillor and family member, Georgen Miggels, who was appointed as the family’s spokesperson, shared details of the events that transpired that night “On Saturday, Jade-Lee was playing a rugby match with his team, Progress Rugby Club After the game they went to celebrate with their friends After celebrat-

ing, he called his mother to let her know that he was on his way home On his way, he and his friends stopped at a sports bar in Young Street, where the incident took place ”

He added: “In the early hours of Sunday morning, Jade-Lee’s brother, Lindo, was called by the police and informed that his brother had been shot at the sports bar Upon his arrival, the brother could still hear the moans and groans of Jade-Lee

When Lindo arrived, the paramedics told him that Jade-Lee was fine but was still in excruciating pain, which is why they were trying to stabilise him I also saw a video circulating on social media of Jade-Lee moaning ”

About an hour later, Miggels said, police returned to the brother with the news that Jade-Lee had not made it and had succumbed to his injuries

“What I heard from the police was that there were nine gunshots that went off in that bar

Two other people were shot, but those people had nothing to do with Jade-Lee They were just un-

fortunate, innocent bystanders ”

When asked how the incident began, Miggels said Jade-Lee was in fact the target

“In a video that I saw from the CCTV footage of the bar, the shooter came to shoot him specifically ”

Miggels added: “Jade-Lee was friends with the wrong crowd growing up, because they all played rugby together from school and in the neighbourhood As a result of his friendship with these individuals, people also thought that he was part of the same crew We know that he was never part of any gang as these individuals he was associated with were He hung around them because they grew up together and were friends before these friends joined gangs ”

According to Miggels, for the past two months Jade-Lee’s life had been changing for the better

“He started distancing himself from these friends, as that would always cause arguments between himself and his family When he decided that he was not going to hang around those guys anymore, I think what happened is

that people saw him alone and not with the guys he was always with

“This weekend was one of those weekends when he was alone There was a target on him solely through association with those friends of his That is why I believe they shot him ”

The family are holding on to the memories of a reformed Jade-Lee – a man who was ever present at home and seldom went out with friends

“For the last two or three weeks, he was always home early, not going to friends He had a healthy routine of going to work, home, rugby, back home again, church, and family time with his girlfriend and child

“There was a visible change in his life in the church, where he would go out for prayer sessions, which was not known to us at the time We only found out later that he had been battling with work-related issues, which he worked on in church Not only that, but there was also a beautiful moment where he repented and asked for forgiveness ”

Miggels said Jade-Lee’s final

NEARLY two months after gang violence forced the closure of Rosedale Clinic on 17 July, over 30,000 residents remain without reliable access to healthcare as the Department of Health shows no signs of restoring services to the original location

With reports of residents being turned away from alternative facilities and growing frustration over departmental delays, the community has now drafted a formal proposal calling for clinic services to be relocated to the currently unused SANTA Hospital in Gqeberha – a move the Department says it will not consider When the Department of Health

spokesperson, Siyanda Manana, was approached for comment regarding the relocation of the clinic, he said that it is not feasible to move the clinic to the suggested SANTA Hospital

He shared, "It is not advisable that we relocate the services of the Rosedale Clinic to SANTA Hospital Doing so is like conceding that crime cannot be defeated, while denying communities their right to access healthcare "

Manana added that Santa Hospital is currently operational, operating as a satellite of Jose Pearson; however, considerations could be made

It is alleged that Park Centre Clinic, located in Cannon Street, has been turning away patients who do not live within the 5km radius

of the clinic and telling them to go to alternative clinics closer to them

When asked whether this is standard departmental policy, Manana said that turning away patients because they do not live within the radius of the clinic is unconstitutional and infringes on the right of South Africans to receive healthcare

"No one should be denied access to healthcare Doing so violates patients' rights Constitutionally, they should not be refusing healthcare for certain individuals Anyone who is denied healthcare should go to the clinic supervisor and report the matter or call the Department of Health toll-free number, 0800 032 364," he said

As the closure of Rosedale Clinic, which serves over 30,000 residents,

is due to gun violence in the area, the timeline for restoration to full operation remains unclear Manana said that staff had requested intensified security at the clinic before they would return

"The sooner security of staff and patients can be guaranteed, the sooner the services of the clinic will resume We need to ensure that our staff feel safe to return "

According to Manana, clinic staff require guaranteed safety before they will return

"The staff only want to feel safe at work They say they want a SAPS mobile/satellite unit stationed outside the clinic Only then will they return," he said

Manana also shared that since the closure of the clinic, "The Depart-

week of life had been a wholesome one, because he went to church every day after rugby practice

“Every day last week after going to church, he also fetched his girlfriend and son every night and bonded over ice cream, which was a surprise to his girlfriend because he never used to do that ”

Captain Beetge confirmed that another male sustained a gunshot wound to his cheek, while a female was wounded in her arm and leg

The suspect fled the scene after the shooting Beetge concluded that cases of murder (one count) and attempted murder (two counts) were opened and are being investigated by SAPS Kariega

ment has met with South African Police Service (SAPS) and the community We also offered alternative service points, namely Tamboville Multipurpose Centre and Park Centre Clinic, and beefed up security at the clinic "

When asked for a specific timeline for when Rosedale community residents can expect their clinic to be fully operational again, Manana was unable to provide concrete dates "It is really difficult to pinpoint a specific time As I said, safety is the main issue The security of staff is important We are constantly monitoring the situation," he said, emphasising that the restoration of services remains contingent on security guarantees rather than any predetermined schedule

Kariegashinesinspectacularvideocelebrating50YearsofPolo

CELEBRATING the past, present and future of Polo, the Volkswagen brand released the spectacular “50 Years of Polo: Project Drift” video on their social media channels last Friday The video, celebrating five decades of the iconic Polo and its various iterations, was shot in and around Nelson Mandela Bay – including, of course, Plant Kariega, the Home of Polo itself Opening with scenes from the Port of Gqeberha and featuring a high-speed tour of the Volkswagen plant, the video shows off various Polo models, including the Polo R WRC, the Polo R Supercar in a Harlequin livery selected by fans, the electric Polo RX1e, and even the Polo GTI, which is built only in South Africa

Finally, the video features a surprise guest: the ID Polo, a near-production concept car that will be the newest, electric member of the Polo family The ID Polo will make its public debut at IAA Mobility in Munich this week

“In our communications regarding the Polo anniversary, we not only want to look back, but forward too and generate enthusiasm for the Volkswagen brand That’s why we deliberately decided to showcase the ID Polo’s first appearance in a spectacular and surprising way This video stands for everything that is quintessential of the Polo: a small car that can do great things and that is geared towards the future,” says Jens Katemann, Head of Communica-

tions for the Volkswagen Brand and Brand Group Core

In the fast-paced video, Sweden’s Johan Kristoffersson sits at the wheel – and you can immediately see that spectacular manoeuvres are his forte: the seven-time FIA World Rallycross Champion and two-time Gymkhana Grid Champion skilfully steers the powerful all-wheel-drive vehicles in precise drifts in a wide variety of situations

“The shoot was a huge pleasure for me It was a great experience to drive the sporty Polo models one after the other and push them to their limits – their characters are different, but they all performed equally really well,” says Johan Kristoffersson, currently top driver in the FIA World Rally-

cross Championship

The shooting locations were not chosen at random: Plant Kariega has been the home of the Polo since July 2024, solely responsible for exporting the Polo to Europe and the Asia-Pacific region

This plant has been building the popular Polo since 1996

“It was an honour for Plant Kariega to be showcased in this globally released video commemorating the history and future of the Polo,” said Andile Dlamini, Head: Group Communications at Volkswagen Group Africa

“We are proud to be such a big part of the Polo success story, and this video is a great source of excitement for the employees who build and sell these cars A special thanks is also due to Transnet Port

THE community of Kariega will come together this month for the 80-Hour Faith Ride, a four-day celebration hosted by HVH Church in Levyvale.

The event, running from 24 to 27 September, combines sport, worship and fellowship with a range of activities designed for all ages.

According to Fuel on Wheels founder Johan Oosthuizen, who helped initiate the programme, the aim is to “bring people together in a spirit of unity, faith and fun while supporting local causes.”

The Faith Ride will serve as the backbone of the event, but a full programme of activities has been arranged. Each day will include community braais, stalls and entertainment from 08:00 to 15:00.

Highlights of the programme include a Heritage Day braai on 24 September, coinciding with the national holiday The same day will feature a women’s event led by broadcaster Lesa-Maré Harris of Luister FM, who will speak on Seasons of Life. Tickets are R150.

On 25 September, Burre Burger of Droogte Hulp will host a men’s gathering focused on fellowship and faith, also costing R150. The

following day, the spotlight turns to young people with the Fantastic 4 youth event.

The festivities will conclude on Saturday, 27 September, with a 5km fun run starting at 08:00. Entry is R20 per person, and participants of all ages are encouraged to take part.

Children will not be left out, with a play fair and other activities scheduled to run

alongside the main events. IN a makeshift studio in Kariega, a young artist faced an impossible choice: pay for studio time or buy groceries for home Vuyolwethu Tule chose the music, a decision that would define both his artistry and his journey as Sniper RSA

That song, born from sacrifice and unwavering belief, became a cornerstone in the career of one of South Africa's most authentic emerging voices

Today, Tule stands as a bridge between worlds, carrying the raw energy and stories of the Eastern Cape while crafting sounds that speak to global audiences His music doesn't just reflect township life; it transforms struggle into art, isolation into connection, and local narratives into universal truths

Tule draws inspiration from his environment and personal journey, crafting lyrics that resonate with both township roots and global aspirations His passion for music began in his teenage years, performing in school choirs and local talent shows Determined to carve out his own lane, he began writing and producing his own music, blending traditional storytelling with modern hiphop influences

In 2021, he released his debut EP titled, Islolo - an isiXhosa word that translates to a person who hustles - a powerful project that introduced his voice to the South African hip-hop scene The EP received positive attention from fans and music insiders, marking the beginning of what promises to be a bold and impactful career

With a growing fan base and a clear artistic vision, Tule continues to push boundaries, using his music as a platform to inspire, reflect, and uplift

Speaking to UD Express, Tule said that growing up in Kariega has taught him how to make something out of nothing "It's a place filled with raw energy, struggle, creativity, and hope, and that duality shaped how I see the world I believe I have township roots with global aspirations, and to me, that means never forgetting where I come from while dreaming beyond my circumstances

My lyrics are grounded in what I've lived, but my sound, my hunger, and my vision stretch beyond borders I want the world to hear our stories from the Eastern Cape and recognise the artistry in our reality "

Being a former member of his school's choir, he believes, gave him stage presence and confidence

"The moment I fell in love with hip-hop was when I wrote my first verse and felt like I finally had a voice It wasn't just music; it was therapy I taught myself through trial and error, watching tutorials, studying lyrics from artists I admired, and just spending hours

with beats," he said His breakthrough project, Islolo, marked his official entry into the South African hiphop scene He shared, "Islolo was my opening of a chapter of vulnerability and growth The title itself speaks to a kind of spiritual heaviness or emotional isolation, and that's what I wanted to express; what it feels like chasing dreams when no one really sees the vision yet The love it received was overwhelming It made me realise people connect with authenticity, and it encouraged me to dig even deeper Now, I don't just write to impress - I write to connect "

When asked about the "resilience, ambition, and raw authenticity" that defines his music, Tule recalled a pivotal moment: choosing between paying for studio time or household essentials "I took the risk, booked the session, and that track ended up being one of the most important in my journey," he reflects This experience shaped his songwriting philosophy of mining moments that "shaped me or broke me" for lyrical inspiration "Not every moment makes it in, but if it might help someone feel seen or inspired, it's worth sharing "

Seeing himself as a voice representing the Eastern Cape, Tule said the province doesn't always get the spotlight "I feel a responsibility to represent our voice, our slang, our stories, in a way that's powerful and authentic Next, I want to explore more live instrumentation, maybe fuse traditional Xhosa elements with hip-hop to show the richness of our culture I also want to collaborate with artists across Africa and beyond, to keep bridging that gap between local and global," he said

For young artists in smaller towns feeling disconnected from the industry, Tule's advice is straightforward: "Don't wait for permission Start where you are, with what you have The internet is your stage " He emphasises consistency, patience, and hunger as key ingredients for success, reminding aspiring musicians that their unique stories are actually advantages "The industry might seem far, but your story makes you unique, so lean into that "

To listen to Sniper RSA's music, you can find it on all digital streaming platforms For updates and more content, follow him on social media under the name Sniper RSA

Funds raised will go towards community support initiatives, with donation opportunities made available during the event.

The organisers expect strong community participation, noting that events of this nature “have the power to remind us of the importance of faith and of standing together as a community,” Oosthuizen added.
