A R73 MILLION infrastructure project that has already created 300 jobs is now 60% complete, with Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Executive Mayor Councillor Babalwa Lobishe crediting exceptional community support as the driving force behind the Matanzima Bridge rehabilitation’s success

Lobishe made these remarks during an oversight visit to the flood-damaged bridge and Ponana Tini Road on Thursday, 11 September She was accompanied by Member of the Mayoral Committee for Roads and Transport, Councillor Yolisa Pali-Jongilanga

Lobishe made a public acknowledgement of how local residents have become instrumental to the project’s progress

“We want to say to the residents of KwaNobuhle, thank you for supporting the project,” she said during the site inspection “The project has proceeded without major hassles, and the support of the local people is greatly appreciated by the project managers ” Lobishe's comments come as project managers confirmed that community cooperation has been key to maintaining the construction timeline Completion is now targeted for November 2025

The Matanzima Bridge rehabilitation has become a model of collaboration This is unusual for municipal infrastructure projects, which often face community resistance Lobishe emphasised this positive dynamic during her visit “At Matanzima Bridge, we are happy to see the work that has been done and the positive feedback from workers regarding the project’s progress,” she stated She praised the commitment of officials involved “We want to appreciate the commitment of the MMC and officials who have pulled through in a short space of time ” Project managers have confirmed that exceptional local support has helped them overcome typical challenges Lobishe acknowledged that

whilst the timeline may seem lengthy, the scope of work is significant “Looking at the amount of work that needs to be done, we are quite happy with the progress,” she said

SHANTI JAFTA

THE Nqweba Meteorite, a celestial spectacle that captured global attention when it descended to Earth in the Eastern Cape on 25 August 2024, is set to ignite curiosity in Kariega next week

The event will be a focal point of the Rolling Stones Mobile Museum, an innovative travelling exhibition that brings science to life through hands-on engagement Hosted at the Nelson Mandela Bay Science and Technology Centre in partnership with the Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA), the exhibition promises an extraordinary opportunity for residents to connect with a piece of the solar system

At the heart of the exhibition is the story of the meteorite, aptly titled, "The Nqweba Meteorite: A Fireball that captured the curiosity of a nation, the eyes of the world, and a glimpse into the solar system " Visitors will have the chance to see and touch fragments of the space rock, immersing themselves in the wonder of this rare event The mobile museum arrives at the Science and Technology Centre in Kariega on Thursday, 25 September, open to the public from 10:00 to 15:00

The initiative is designed to inspire all ages but especially targets young learners and school groups “This is about making the universe tangible,” said Singathwa Poswa, Research, Innovation & Sustainability Manager at the Nelson Mandela Bay Science and Technology Centre “Through interactive demonstrations with the real meteorite, we hope to spark not just curiosity but a desire to learn more about science, technology, and the infinite possibilities of STEM careers ”

Supported by the MBDA, the exhibition aims to make cutting-edge science accessible to communities that may not have such opportunities Nicole Klokow, the MBDA’s Marketing, Communication and Investment Promotions Manager, said that bringing the story of the Nqweba Meteorite to Kariega combines education with a celebration of local heritage “It’s not just science; it’s about creating pride and connection while potentially boosting tourism

opportunities for the region,” she explained

The day will conclude with a presentation by Professor Roger Gibson from the University of the Witwatersrand at 15:30 Drawing from his expertise, Professor Gibson will delve deeper into the meteorite’s significance, providing visitors with a richer understanding of this mesmerising phenomenon and its contribution to scientific discovery

VolkswagenGroupAfricasecuresBay’spumpstations

DEMONSTRATING proactive corporate citizenship, Volkswagen Group Africa (VWGA) has adopted three key sewerage pump stations in Nelson Mandela Bay: the Kelvin Pump Station and two Peter Searle substations, as part of a broader effort to enhance infrastructure security and environmental protection

According to Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber spokesperson Sibongile Dimbaza, this adoption forms the first wave of sewerage pump station partnerships under the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber's growing Adopt-a-Substation initiative, now being extended through a new Adopt-a-Pump-Station programme

The initiative is being driven by the Chamber s Water and Sanitation Task Team and the Kariega Cluster, with support from municipal authorities

Under the new adoption, Volkswagen will deploy its in-house security team to conduct regular patrols at the pump stations,

providing a visible and ongoing deterrent to criminal activity In addition, state-of-the-art surveillance systems will be installed at all three locations, with real-time monitoring by VW s security operations centre

This will enable rapid detection and response to any incidents of tampering or vandalism

These interventions are crucial given the isolated locations of pump stations, which make them vulnerable to cable theft, vandalism and other criminal activities, often leading to service disruptions that affect homes, businesses and schools

This partnership was initiated in response to a request from Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality and aligns with a municipal strategy to involve private sector partners in protecting critical infrastructure

VW's engagement reflects a strong commitment to community wellbeing, environmental protection and responsible corporate leadership

"These pump stations are not just

pieces of infrastructure but lifelines to communities and businesses across Nelson Mandela Bay," said Nick Chapman, Chair of the Disaster Management Task Team and the Kariega Cluster

"When they fail due to neglect or criminal damage, the effects are felt across households, schools and workplaces As Volkswagen Group Africa, we are proud to be part of the solution This initiative reflects our deep commitment to community wellbeing and responsible corporate citizenship "

This marks a significant milestone as the first sewerage pump stations adopted under the broader infrastructure protection drive

The move aims not only to deter vandalism but also to protect the Bay's natural environment

By preventing criminal damage that can lead to sewage spills, the initiative contributes directly to the preservation of local rivers and waterways

Protecting these systems is essential to maintaining public health, environmental sustainability and

long-term service reliability

"This is about more than security – it's about safeguarding our ecosystems," Chapman added

"Every pump station protected is a step towards preventing raw sewage from spilling into our rivers and damaging our environment "

This initiative brings the total number of adopted sewerage pump stations to four In addition to the three stations adopted by VW, the North End Cluster is currently awaiting a quote for the adoption and protection of the Voyle Pump Station, located near North End

Lake

The Business Chamber's Adopt-a-Substation and Adopt-aPump-Station initiatives continue to gain traction, with several member companies actively stepping forward to participate

These efforts are complemented by the municipality s own actions, such as welding shut vulnerable access points and reinforcing structural protections at key infrastructure sites

"The Chamber commends Volk-

swagen Group Africa for its proactive and commendable leadership in adopting and securing key pump stations in our metro," said Denise van Huyssteen, CEO of the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber

"This initiative represents exactly the kind of responsible corporate citizenship we aim to foster We hope it sets a powerful precedent for other industry leaders to follow, demonstrating that collective action can bring real, measurable change for the benefit of our city "

Beyond improving physical security, these business-led adoptions also support operational responsiveness

With real-time monitoring and reporting, potential issues like pump overflows or system failures can be flagged early, enabling faster municipal response and reducing the risk of prolonged service outages

This growing network of adopted stations is a compelling example of how public-private collaboration can play a critical role in urban resilience, environmental protection and service continuity

THE John Walton Secondary School Class of 1982 recently gathered in Kariega for a momentous celebration: their collective 60th birthdays

The reunion became a heartfelt journey down memory lane, marked by poignant tributes, laughter, and a rekindling of the indomitable spirit that defined their school days at “Mama Walton”

A weekend steeped in nostalgia

The festivities spanned three days, drawing classmates from across the country Friday night's informal braai and potjie gathering set a jubilant tone, as old friends reminisced about their school days and shared stories

Saturday night's black-tie gala dinner was elegant, with classmates and spouses adhering to the colour theme of black and gold, when attendees toasted six decades of life and friendship

The event was not just a celebration of age, but a tribute to the shared experiences that continue to bind the class together after more than four decades

Back to school: A symbolic return

Sunday afternoon brought a particularly emotional highlight

Dressed proudly in their iconic “Mama Walton” school colours, the Class of '82 returned to the classroom for one last shortened three-period school day

The symbolic gesture was made even more special by the presence of two revered former teachers, Brian Swartbooi and Freddy Theron, who reprised their roles at the front of the class

Their words, filled with wisdom and affection, resonated deeply with their former pupils, many of whom credited them, together with their colleagues, as key influences in their lives

Amongst other things, Swartbooi reminded his class that "Aches and pains are temporary; the reward of victory lasts for a lifetime " Theron concluded his lesson

with a passionate plea for all alumni to support their alma mater in addressing the numerous challenges faced in establishing an enabling environment for effective learning at the school

Honouring those who have passed

The celebration was also a time to remember those who could not be there

The class honoured the ten members who have passed away

since their school days

The widows of three of these late classmates; Fredaline Daniels, Erica George, and Fiena Steyn, were present, their attendance a powerful reminder of the enduring bonds of friendship and community

In a moving tribute, Fiena Steyn recited a poem entitled Mama Walton: Silwer Nostalgie, written especially for the occasion, capturing the bittersweet

REPRESENTATIVES of the Say NO to Drugs campaign in the Eastern Cape recently empowered trainees at the Volkswagen B-Plant in Kariega during their Wellness Education Day

The interactive session provided the young professionals with factual, practical, and eye-opening knowledge about drugs, why they are harmful, and how they impact individuals, families, and communities

The initiative aimed to arm trainees with tools to make informed choices and to counter the devastating rise of substance abuse in the province According to a Say NO to Drugs spokesperson, Sabelo Bless, the campaign is part of the Foundation for a Drug-Free World, one of the largest non-governmental drug prevention initiatives globally

"The Foundation operates in over 180 countries and has reached more than one billion people with drug education materials " He added that the Say NO to Drugs campaign operates under the Foundation for a Drug-Free World, a global volunteer-based movement established in 2006

"The campaign is designed so that anyone from teachers, com-

munity activists, law enforcement officers to concerned citizens, can start their own group, with all materials freely provided by the Foundation," Bless said

"In the Eastern Cape, our headquarters officially opened on 6 April this year, though globally the programme has been active for nearly two decades In Africa alone, over the past year we have educated and reached more than 1 2 million people in 32 countries

Within South Africa, approximately 149,000 people have been reached in the past year through seminars, meetings, and awareness drives including here in Gqeberha," he said

"The campaign is supported internationally by the Church of Scientology in the same way that many religions and community bodies support humanitarian programmes However, the campaign itself is secular and focuses exclusively on drug prevention education "

According to Bless, the engagement comes at a time when the Eastern Cape, and South Africa at large, is facing an unprecedented surge of drug-related problems, most notably the accessibility of crack cocaine Once thought unlikely to penetrate this region, the drug has spread rapidly, wreaking

havoc on youth and families

"Clearly, someone took the opportunity to explore virgin territory at the painful expense of the youth and parents who have to watch as their children get torn apart by this drug," the campaign noted The result has been devastating, with many young people seen homeless, incoherent, and trapped in irrational behaviour

During the session, trainees reflected on how stigma perpetuates addiction One trainee remarked, "You know, the problem is not that we don't know that drugs are bad for you; it is the fact that when one tries to quit, they are ridiculed by society, which pushes the person back to the unwanted state he was in This comes from those people in our communities not knowing what we are learning today "

This reflection was sparked by the Say NO to Drugs booklets, which provide clear, fact-based insights into the real effects of drugs

Bless concluded that this initiative highlighted how drug use has been dangerously normalised, to the point where sobriety can appear unusual

"Tackling that mindset with hard facts was the cornerstone of the campaign's intervention All we do is provide the facts and see to it that they are understood "

emotions of remembrance and gratitude

Legacy of the class of '82

The weekend's events were a testament to the strength and unity of the John Walton Secondary School Class of 1982, built on the culture of family and ubuntu of their alma mater

With laughter, tears, and heartfelt reflection, the group celebrated not only their personal

milestones, but also the legacy of their alma mater

As the reunion drew to a close, classmates parted with renewed connections and a shared commitment to keep their memories alive for years to come

The 60th birthday celebration served as a poignant reminder that whilst time moves on, the spirit of youth, friendship, solidarity and collective memory endures

HANNES SCHOEMAN
