DUE to a rise in criminal activity in Nelson Mandela Bay, a joint special crime prevention operation called "Operation Shanella II" was rolled out in Gqeberha on Friday, June 27

According to SAPS District Commissioner for the Nelson Mandela Bay District Major General Vuyisile Ncata, the aim of the operation is to address serious violent crime such as murder, hijacking and armed business robbery

"We are placing more boots on the ground, especially during weekends and month-end as these times have shown more criminal activities taking place in Nelson Mandela Bay " Operation "Shanella II" comprises SAPS Public Order Police, the Tactical Response Team, visible policing, Anti-Gang Unit, Flying Squad, District Operational Command Centre (DOCC), Nelson Mandela Bay Metro Police and NMB Traffic Department

"The abuse of alcohol and drugs

is a major contributor in most of our problematic crimes, and during month-end periods we see this abuse rise dramatically," he said

Addressing SAPS members at the event, Ncata added: "By flooding the streets of NMB with police members, we are making sure to be visible and to be a deterrent to criminal activities "

The crime prevention operation will include the clamping down of illegal firearms, stolen goods, drugs and counterfeit goods

DARKNESS has descended across the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, but this isn't the natural kind that comes with sunset

Critical roads, including but not limited to the airport approach along Allister Miller Road, the bustling N2 corridor from John Tallant Road to Summerstrand, and key routes connecting Gqeberha to Kariega via the R75 and Old Cape Road, now lie shrouded in darkness that poses serious risks to thousands of daily commuters

From the R334 Uitenhage Farms to Daniel Pienaar Street, and from Old Uitenhage Road to Durban Street in Kariega, non-functional streetlights have transformed essential infrastructure into hazardous obstacle courses where drivers navigate by high beam, gambling against unseen potholes and potential accidents

As residents and businesses grapple with heightened security concerns and motorists face increased collision risks, questions mount about the municipality's response to what appears to be a widespread infrastructure crisis affecting some of the metro's most vital roadways

A Kariega resident, Asemahle Gqubule, shared her views on the matter: "It's ridiculously dark in the metro, posing a safety hazard for road users When I have to leave early for work, I have to drive with my brights on as soon as I approach the Swartkops route to Gq-

eberha from Kariega Some people are selfish drivers who don't think to switch their brights off when an oncoming car approaches, which can cause accidents from having to swerve around potholes that you did not see because of the other vehicle blinding you with their lights "

Another Gqeberha resident, Lisa Gwanqa, said, "Going to Kariega from the Old Cape Road near the Rocklands side is a nightmare The lack of lighting promotes criminal activity " She also added that the lack of lights can cause serious car accidents "Since it is dark and that road has many potholes in it, it is hard to spot the pothole until it is too late, meaning you can either damage a tyre by driving into it, or swerving last minute, possibly hitting an oncoming car or animals, because it is close to farms " Jenna Thomas, a Gqeberha resident working in Despatch, said, "The R75 between Despatch and Gqeberha is not safe at night When we have night events at work, I always have to drive back home in the dark " She added, "In some instances, my dad or brother drives to Despatch where I work, just so that we can convoy together back to Gqeberha so that I get home safely, which is wasteful Streetlights are a necessity that we need to make us feel safe " The municipality was approached multiple times to provide a comment, but failed to respond at the time of going to print on Monday, July 7

DWINDLING staff, a lack of resources and witness accounts of patients found sleeping on mattresses without linen or pillows have been plaguing Livingstone Hospital for years

Last week, DA Shadow MEC for Health, Jane Cowley, yet again painted a grim picture with an emphasis on staff shortages “The wards and corridors of the Livingstone Hospital complex in Gqeberha are hauntingly empty,” she said in a statement on Monday, June 30

“In just two years, 74 doctors have left, including 41 medical officers, 15 registrars and 18 specialists ” Cowley further highlighted a “chronic shortage” of anaesthesiologists, which contributed to the slashing of theatre activity by 30%, consequently extending surgical waiting lists

In May, DA spokesperson for Health, Michele Clarke MP, called for Livingstone Hospital to be placed under administration to halt the alarming deterioration in services

province

“DA-oversights to the hospital, which serves a province that’s home to more than 7 milli ple, revealed a facilit the brink of collaps Clarke said at the time

“The conditions at Livingstone Hospital border on inhumane, with medical waste and dirty linen in corridors, unsafe infrastructure, broken equipment, lack of supplies, and staff shortages ”

While the Easter Cape Department Health is yet to step with the basic needs tients, such as providing clean linen, ordinary people, nurses, NGOs and corporates are stepping up to ensure patients reclaim their dignity with fresh linen, blankets and pillows

"It (linen) is something I always bring with me to the hospital, especially since I visit the hospital at least once a month," she shared

"In the past, they supplied a sheet on the bed and you supplied your own pillow and blankets but after being at the hospital on a monthly basis I’ve noticed that people were sleeping on mattresses without linen, pillows and blankets, which is dismal "

Due to some patients having no visitors, there was no one to provide the necessities, she added

“It is so sad, and I don’t blame the nurses or doctors because they are trying their best "

For the past four to five months, Van der Watt has been collecting donations from the public, NGOs and corporates to ensure patients have the essentials

“Patients and staff are very grateful that I am doing this Last month, I did the first floor at Livingstone, and a few nurses also started donating," she explained

"People are donating toiletries, and I deliver everything once a month as the patient turnover is high "

However, the project comes with its own challenges as patients leave newly donated lind blankets which has ted a perpetual cycle needing to donate nen to new patients

Donna van der Watt, who was admitted

challenges patients leave he nd blankets which has arted perpetual cycle f to linen to new should this ut, I mean even the ortage of doctors and es who working overtime to compensate, everyone

"Nurses have told me that patients leave with sheets and pillows and blankets which I have taken “I think that government should sort his (linen shortage) t, I mean even the rtage of doctors and s who are working to compensate, is affecting everyone ”

Robyn Clarke, from Room to Breathe, a business that assists with the packing of household items for relocation or deceased estates, recently donated linen and blankets received from a deceased estate

wish to donate their unwanted items, so when I stumbled upon Donna's plea for help regarding donations for the Livingstone Hospital, I knew that is where the linen, blankets and clothing would go to

Localbusinessesaddress servicedeliveryissues

IN a bold show of civic leadership, the Newton Park Business Cluster has taken matters into its own hands by repainting 40 stop signs in 10 intersections across the busy commercial suburb, a move aimed at improving safety, boosting the area’s visual appeal, and addressing service delivery shortcomings head-on

The project, spearheaded and funded voluntarily by local businesses through the Newton Park Business Cluster, marks a significant milestone in a broader push to ensure that the area remains a functional, secure and attractive destination for commerce and investment

The initiative was carried out in collaboration with the MES (Mould Empower Serve) team, a non-profit organisation dedicated to the rehabilitation and reintegration of vulnerable individuals

Through its GROW programme, MES provides work opportunities that promote dignity and responsibility, making the partnership a win-win for both community upliftment and urban renewal

“This initiative is about more than just paint on the road,” said Chantal van Heerden, Chairperson of the Newton Park Business Cluster, in a statement last week

“It’s about restoring pride in our area

A well-maintained, visually appealing business district is safer, more welcoming for customers and investors, and ultimately adds value to every property and business operating here

We are showing what’s possible when local businesses unite around a shared vision

”To date, the Cluster has completed repainting work on 10 intersections, with more scheduled in the coming weeks as part of a phased rollout The project, which improves road safety and traffic flow, is also transforming the visual identity of the area, helping to reposition

Newton Park as a clean, orderly and investable precinct

“The Newton Park Business Cluster is one of 11 geographically-based clusters operating under the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber These clusters serve as the Chamber’s action arms, empowering businesses in specific areas to collectively tackle infrastructure decay, safety issues and urban neglect, challenges that have become all too common across the metro Chamber CEO, Denise van Huyssteen, commended the Newton Park Cluster for leading by example

“We applaud the Newton Park Cluster for taking bold, proactive steps to improve their area Their efforts to maintain infrastructure and prioritise safety are exemplary This is what our clustering model is all about - businesses becoming active players in fixing common challenges in the areas,” she said

“This initiative reaffirms our view that the metro is fixable It shows that by working together, the business community can drive real change, not just in Newton Park, but across Nelson Mandela Bay,” Van Huyssteen added Van Huyssteen further highlights that the repainting project is just one of several interventions being rolled out by the Cluster

“More broadly, it sends a clear message that the business community is not waiting for change; it is leading it ”The line painting is just one of several interventions being rolled out by the Newton Park Cluster, with more collaborative upgrades planned

To date, a total of 24 potholes have been fixed, with more targeted for repairs As the Newton Park Cluster continues its steady transformation through collective action, its success offers a replicable model for other commercial precincts across Nelson Mandela Bay

Expressreporter,DANIELLESAAYMAN,incollaborationwiththePayItForward Community Foundation (PIFCF), has launched the Pay It Forward Community Fund A shared dream between both parties will become a reality as Saayman embarks on a ruck (walking with weight on her back) from July 14 to July 17, 2025, to raise funds for the Pay It Forward Community Fund

Over the course of four days, Saayman will walk 3 km per day while carrying a 40-kilogram sandbag

The ruck will commence in Kariega, move through Despatch and Gqeberha, and conclude in Jeffreys Bay

Having worked closely with the community over the past few years and witnessed the need firsthand, Saayman and the PIFCF felt compelled to act Together, they launched the fund, which will provide assistance to those in need within local communities

“This fund will help people cover medical expenses, whether it’s surgery, cancer treatment, or offering support to families facing hunger Carrying a 40-kilogram sandbag for three kilometres a day over four days will be no easy task, but it’s about more than me carrying the sandbag

“It’s about what the sandbag symbolises

The weight represents the pain, hurt, depression, loneliness, grief, and struggles people experience in their lives Everyone carries their own ‘weight’ on their shoulders,” Saayman explained She started rucking shortly after losing her mother to cancer in 2022

“On September 18, 2022, I received the worst phone call of my life while I was in the United States The voice on the other end said, ‘Danielle, she fought so hard until the end But it’s all over ’ My mother

had passed away after a painful 11-month battle with kidney cancer Due to strict visa regulations, I couldn’t travel back to South Africa,” she shared

“I had to face the loss and grief alone, without any blood relatives by my side

“In the depths of that pain, I turned to many things to cope, including alcohol But it was in my darkest hour that God called me to do something I never, in a million years, thought I would do On August 19, 2023, I carried a 100-pound (45-kilogram) sandbag for three kilometres in honour of my late mother, Michelle, while also raising money for a CrossFit friend who was battling breast cancer at the time That day, God showed me my purpose And that’s why I’m rucking again this year for a purpose bigger than myself ”

While the weight for Saayman symbolises the burden of grief after losing her mother to cancer, it can mean something different to each individual

For some, it might symbolise abuse, miscarriage, divorce, financial struggles, loss of income, the loss of a child, family separation, or the death of a loved one

Sonja du Preez, the visionary of PIFCF, said she has always been driven to assist those in need and explained that easing someone else’s burden brings her immense joy

“I was born with an unrelenting spark that drives me to defy the ordinary al-

ways responding to the world’s ‘why’ with a bold ‘why not ’ And it’s that ‘why not’ that fuels my ‘why ’ May you find your ‘why’ and may it lead you to go out and

make a difference,” Du Preez stated To donate or for more information, contact Sonja du Preez on 064 537 4228 or visit www pifcf co za

ENJOY the long weekend coming up in Nelson Mandela Bay, that is if you are a horse racing fan!

The racing weekend at the Fairview track in Greenbushes starts with a good-looking meeting on the turf track on Friday Then it is back to Fairview on Monday when the action moves from the turf to the poly surface

There are two feature races to look forward to on Friday – the Gold Cup over 3200m and the East Cape Paddock Stakes for fillies and mares over 1600m

The Gold Cup is annually one of the most popular races at Fairview So many things can go wrong over 3200m, and you need a really fit horse to win that impressive trophy

Last Friday, the trophy in the Walmer Handicap went to the Zietsman Oosthuizen stable

The filly, Bosnay, was not amongst the favourites to win the race, although she had a light weight to carry, which made her competitive She had an apprentice jockey, Jacey Botes,

Ilkehardloop derdepleklosin interprovinsiale

Haar afrigter, Marinda Cronje, is baie opgewonde met Ilke se prestasie en vordering en is ook van mening dat Ilke net so goed en selfs beter sal presteer as ‘n vol marathonatleet in die nabye toekoms. on her back, who had to compete with the bigger names

But what a gutsy and brave display by both Bosnay and Botes to secure victory

They went to the front straight away and kept the challengers at bay to win a very exciting race

Honourable Member and jockey, Luyolo Mxothwa, gave it everything, but Bosnay kept on fighting for the biggest victory of her career East Cape champion trainer, Alan Greeff, is expected to make a huge impact on the upcoming Fairview meetings, but he also made a huge impact this past Saturday on the country’s greatest race day

For the first time at the Hollywoodbets Durban July meeting, Greeff saddled a winner

It was the filly, Anotherdanceforme, who easily won the Golden Slipper race for two-yearold fillies over 1400m Richard Fourie was in the saddle

The exciting Anotherdanceforme is unbeaten from five starts and will now take a well-de-

served break

Greeff also saddled a runner, My Best Shot, for the first time in the July itself He didn’t run into the money, but My Best Shot wasn’t disgraced at all, finishing midfield

It is Greeff’s most successful season ever, but he still has some work to do to better his own East Cape season record of 176 winners

He has moved up to 157, still 19 winners to go with only four meetings left

Greeff has also won four feature races outside the province this season In total, he has saddled 161 winners, the most by any trainer in the country this season

The nail-biting title race for the locally based jockeys is still in full flight Charles Ndlovu took a big step towards the title by riding a winner this past Friday

Eldin Webber is still in front but won’t be seen again this season due to an injury Ndlovu is now just two behind Webber, but only one winner ahead of Yuzae Ramzan and Sandile Khathi

THE LSEN Week was the highlight of Eastern Province’s solid showing at the various age-group rugby tournaments countrywide

For the second year in a row, EP was the best side at the week, which took place in Bethal, Mpumalanga, this year The EP side, which mostly consists of players from Bergsig in Kariega, was the only unbeaten team in Bethal It wasn’t easy for the EP boys, especially in that thrilling final match against Western Province

What a tough contest it was! At halftime the scores were locked at 3-3 and it took a gutsy effort from EP to win 11-10

Both sides scored a try apiece, and for EP the boot of fly half Zaynodeen Bennie (Bergsig) did the rest Bennie was named as the man of the match

The SA LSEN Schools squad of 23 players were named at the end of the week EP dominated the group with 13 representatives This team is competing at the u/18 Academy Week which started in Middelburg, Mpumalanga, on Monday

Although it was a brutal final match against WP, it was one-way traffic for EP in their other matches They started with a 41-3 victory over Boland Uvern Adams (centre, Bergsig) was the man of the match EP reached 50 points in the second match against the Falcons, winning 50-19 This time, Rylan Hawkins (wing, Westview) was the man of the match

At the u/16 Grant Khomo Week in Pretoria, EP lost their first match but came back strongly with two convincing victories South Western Districts beat EP 27-10 in the opener, scoring four tries to two The EP captain, Anfred Jansen (Grey, centre), scored a individual try in this match It wasn’t easy against the Pumas in the next match but EP deserved to win 27-15 Entle Ngcaba (prop, St Andrew’s) scored two of EP’s three tries

The Griffons competed strongly in the first half in EP’s final match but the pressure was just too much for them in the end EP scored four tries to one, with Keanu Linch (Grey) getting a brace

At the u/13 Craven Week in East London, EP had a tough start when they faced the mighty WP WP won 31-7, scoring four tries against one, but to the credit of EP, they never stopped trying and competed bravely throughout the match They played sparkling rugby in their next match when they scored six tries to two to beat the Falcons 40-17 Then it was a disappointing loss against the Limpopo Blue Bulls Both sides scored a try apiece, and it was probably a game EP should have won The Bulls pulled through 10-5 In their last match, EP was back to their best, beating Griqualand West 52-5 EP scored eight tries, conceding only one
