WHILE volunteering at the St Francis Animal Rescue, Caskin White met two remarkable boys from Sea Vista who inspired him and community leader, Jerome Visagie, to launch a transformative housing renovation project

White, who moved to St Francis Bay two years ago with his wife, Laetitia, became involved with the St Francis Animal Rescue, where they were exposed to the harsh realities faced by many underprivileged people living in Sea Vista

Fortunately, through volunteering for the animal rescue organisation, they met two remarkable young boys, aged 11 and 13, who also volunteer every Thursday despite facing significant hardships at home

As an occasional treat, the couple takes the two boys out to KFC and has previously bought them a pair of shoes since they had none

By communicating with the boys, White said they learned that their father was a drug addict and was unable to take care of them, while their mother left for Cape Town during the COVID-19 lockdown to sort out their identity documents, but never returned

White said the children are now being cared for by their uncle and his wife, who have generously offered them a place to stay

"These two boys have given everything just to help and be present at St Francis Animal Rescue on Thursdays, even though they don't have to," said White

After giving them money on one occasion, he said they told him they used it to buy electricity

White said that when he heard this, something had "clicked" for him, and he knew he had to do something more to assist them

Since he and his wife have always wanted to do work that goes beyond animals to help people in the community, they wanted to use this opportunity to make a difference

White reached out to Visagie, a respected Sea Vista community leader and local entrepreneur, who has inspired him over the years

Visagie, who has built a diverse business empire spanning cleaning, construction, painting, removals and airport transfers, provides vital employment opportunities for residents while remain-

ing deeply rooted in his neighbourhood

Considering his connection to the community, White asked for Visagie's assistance in improving the boys' family home

"I've always believed that if you can give someone a good place to live, a place that's sanitary and clean, a quality living space, they can have something to come home to every day," said White

He said the renovation project is designed to be sustainable and community-focused, with all work being outsourced to Richard Bosch, a single father of three who has previously worked on renovations with Visagie

White said connecting with Visagie has been a great experience as he is someone whom he looks up to and feels inspired by, given that he has, for many years, been making the Sea Vista community a better place

"I would not be able to do this without Jerome He is really the key ingredient to this change that we are trying to deliver to a family in Sea Vista," said White

He said the initiative relies on donated materials and items from local businesses to keep costs down

"We want to feed the community with assistance from the community By redoing this house, giving Richard a paycheque through these renovations, we can hopefully extend this to other families in the future," said White

While the long-term goal is to assist more people in the community, for now, he said the focus of the project will be on families with children at the centre

"Children are the next generation It is the generation that we can change, the generation that we can hopefully activate and motivate to lead better lives while saying thank you to the generation that is taking care of them," said White He said the current family caring for the boys has made significant sacrifices, taking on additional children when they already have their own to support White hopes this initiative will bring the St Francis Bay communities together

"It's about a regenerative sustainable programme that really feeds back into the community, and hopefully we can bring St Francis Bay together where it's really needed," said White

IN an ongoing collaboration between Kouga Local Municipality and the JumpStart Group, over thirty unemployed youth from Jeffreys Bay and surrounding areas recently benefited from the JumpStart Programme – a free initiative designed to equip young people with critical life skills and valuable work experience in the retail sector

The programme has been actively training youth in the region since 2018, with a recent session held at the Pellsrus Caravan Park during August

The first group of participants received training earlier this year, in May, at Mentors Country Estate

More than 30 young people, aged between 18 and 33, attended the three-day programme at the caravan park, engaging with a facilitator who provided practical, real-world tasks linked to the content shared

The Life Skills Course covers Personal Development, The Art of Customer and Sales Excellence, Interview Skills, and Entrepreneurship, and is followed by a six-day retail work experience

starting on 27 August 2025

This hands-on exposure in real-world retail settings significantly enhances participants’ employability

JumpStart Eastern Cape Assistant Regional Coordinator, Darryll Karolus, explained, “The three-day training will be followed by a post-assessment with me I will give them a test to write, followed by interviews, and then we will hand out uniforms and work experience documents on 15 August The programme is made possible through strong partnerships with the Mr Price Foundation and the SPAR Group nationally, which offer training and job placement opportunities through their various retail divisions ” Participating employer partners include Mr Price Apparel, Mr Price Sport, Mr Price Home, Miladys, Sheet Street, Power Fashion, Studio 88, SPAR and Build It The programme is facilitated by the municipality’s Local Economic Development and Tourism section, with young people invited to apply through an existing database, as well as other municipal channels

THE Tsitsikamma Section of the Garden Route National Park conducted its Donation Outreach Programme on 15 August

This initiative aimed to meet the essential educational needs of Krakeel Primary School, which is located approximately 100 kilometres from the Tsitsikamma National Park

The donation included 100 pairs of school shoes and socks, 100 shirts and trousers, and 36 packs of sanitary towels

The donation was made possible through the support of MPM Enviro Enterprise, which sourced and provided all the items Krakeel Primary is the sole primary school serving the broader Krakeel community, where residents face significant socio-economic challenges, such as unemployment, substance abuse and single-parent households

While some of the local farmers provide support to the school, many parents rely on

seasonal farm work at these farms to support their families, which is not a sustainable or stable source of income

This initiative follows the donation of 200 pairs of school shoes to five schools in the Tsitsikamma area in early 2024, as part of the park’s Back to School Programme, which supports learners from underprivileged communities in accessing quality education with dignity

Such initiatives form part of the broader

SANParks Vision 2040, which seeks to foster socio-economic transformation by creating stronger partnerships between the public and private sectors to uplift communities adjacent to national parks Through Vision 2040, SANParks envisions sustainable collaboration that not only protects biodiversity but also empowers neighbouring communities through education, skills and enterprise development, SMME opportunities, and improved livelihoods

A privately-owned pound has been established at Farm 865 Mooiuitzicht on the R102 in Jeffreys Bay, and in compliance with the legislative provisions pertaining to the establishment and operation of a pound

The pound spans 4 5 hectares and provides grazing camps to accommodate different livestock Five larger camps are available for cattle, donkeys, horses, and ostriches, while six smaller camps have been set aside for sheep, goats, and pigs Each camp is fully equipped with water troughs, feeding bowls, and natural shade, while the smaller enclosures also include shelter for added protection

In addition, a separate grazing area with three handling camps has been developed, featuring facilities where medication can be administered and injured animals can be treated Kouga Executive Mayor, Hattingh Bornman, welcomed the establishment of the pound, describing it as a vital intervention for both public safety and the well-being of animals

Kouga Executive Mayor Hattingh Bornman announced this week that reconstruction of the Seekoei Causeway is back on track after a five-week weather delay He said that completion is anticipated within six weeks He thanked the Aston Bay and Paradise Beach residents fortheirpatienceandsupport

“It is hoped that the pound will go a long way towards reducing road accidents that are caused by stray animals,” said Bornman “The facility will also play an important role in the fight against stock theft, as stray animals will now have a secure place to be kept until claimed by their owners ” Bornman further emphasised that while the pound is an important safeguard, livestock owners must take responsibility for their animals

“Ultimately, it is the responsibility of livestock owners to ensure their animals do not roam unattended, damage other people’s property, or wander onto roads where they can cause serious accidents ” Residents can report stray animals at the Kouga Call Centre at 042 200 2200 or 081 760 9183 (WhatsApp only)

Fisherman’sbeloveddogrescuedfrom3-metremanhole

RAZAAN PLAATJIES

GYPSY, a three-year-old Australian Cattle Dog, has been reunited with his family after going missing for 15 days, ultimately being found trapped in a three-metre-deep manhole in Jeffreys Bay

The emotional rescue operation concluded on 12 August, bringing relief to owner Tyler Pelser, who had conducted an extensive search covering over 3,000 kilometres

Pelser said the ordeal began on 28 July when Gypsy jumped off his bakkie during a routine trip following a fishing excursion

He said Gypsy had been riding on

his bakkie since he was a puppy, and over the past three years, this was the first time he had ever jumped off after the leash clip snapped on his body harness

"The moment I realised he had jumped off the back, I turned around and raced to where it happened, but he was nowhere to be found," said Pelser

He said he then proceeded to inform his fiancée, Danell Harmse, and his mom, Chantall Pelser, who quickly put an ad on her Facebook page and various other lost pet groups

Pelser said the days following Gypsy's disappearance were emotionally and mentally exhausting

"I had to go to the doctor, get

booked off work, and take a month's leave so I could conduct the search and rescue," said Pelser

"I blamed myself completely, so I felt I had to be the one searching 24 hours a day "

Pelser said the breakthrough finally came on 12 August when a local resident, Natasha de Klerk, reported hearing howling from a nearby house

He said that at about 21:00, he went on foot patrol in an open field behind De Klerks house

Pelser was armed with nothing but a two-way radio, which he used to communicate with Harmse while he searched

"As I moved further into the field and closer to the sound, I heard a gut-wrenching howl coming from the ground," said Pelser

He said that when he discovered the open manhole, he found Gypsy looking up at him

While calling out "Pappa is hier; Pappa gaan jou red", Pelser said Gypsy's ears went flat, and his tail started wagging

He said he called out to Harmse on the two-way radio, and she ran towards them to assist

With adrenaline taking over, Pelser said he then jumped into the manhole, which had an overwhelming urine smell, to rescue Gypsy

"He still had his body harness on, so I clipped the leash, picked him up, and lifted him as high as I could so Danell could grab his harness and pull him out I don't remember how I climbed out because the adrenaline had taken over," said Pelser

Gypsy was immediately rushed to Cape Cross Vet in Jeffreys Bay, where he was treated for dehydration and weight loss

"His recovery has been excellent and steady, and he's quickly getting back to his old self with lots of love, attention and a special diet," said Pelser

"Gypsy is everything to us, along with our Maltese Poodle, Siska They

are like children to us "

The search effort highlighted the power of community support, with numerous volunteers joining the rescue operation

Pelser said they were blessed by the reaction and assistance from the community

He said the support was amazing, with donations ranging from diesel to home-cooked meals

"We could never have conducted this massive search without the community's help," said Pelser

"We will never forget the love shown to us and our boy Thank you to everyone who stood by us, prayed, searched, donated, and helped bring our boy home "

Reflecting on the ordeal, Pelser said he is grateful they persevered and never gave up on their search to find

Gypsy

"I was mentally and physically prepared to find him in any scenario

The not knowing was the hardest part, but it drove me to follow every single lead, keep faith, and never be afraid to ask for help," said Pelser

The rescue operation involved several community members, including Bo van Niekerk, Marius Dreyer from Jeffreys Bay Neighbourhood Watch, Freddie van Der Wyk, Nathan Muller, Mekayla Roux, Johan Longland and his daughter, Luzandri Longland, David Phelan from law enforcement and Rachelle Harmse

AT Global Leadership Academy, sport is one of the ways the school makes disciples and shapes leaders

Every practice, every match, every competition, is an opportunity to grow in character, perseverance and teamwork

The school is excited to launch its brand-new GLA sportswear, made possible through the incredible support of the community

The school is especially honoured to welcome Cub3 Concrete as the Premier Front Sponsor of their jerseys, and Pick n Pay Jeffreys Bay as the Premier Back Sponsor

Their commitment ensures that GLA learners compete with pride, carrying the names of businesses that believe in the next generation

The school is also grateful to its supporting sponsors: ABSA

Bank, Apex Driving School, Cape Cross Animal Hospital, Fountains Mall, Humansdorp Motors, Humansdorp Toyota, JBay Cabs, Langkloof Bricks, Smhart Security, Stance, Top Trusses and True Technologies

The sponsored kits were originally planned just for the school's winter team sport, which includes hockey, rugby, soccer, and netball, but they have made the decision to ex-

pand this design and branding across all sports on offer at GLA

This means their sponsors' logos will also be proudly displayed in cricket, tennis, squash, archery, chess, cross

country and more

When learners put on these jerseys, they represent not only GLA but also a community united in purpose, investing in young people who will grow to lead and make a difference

GLArugbybeatsNicoMalan49-29

GLOBAL Leadership Academy's First Rugby Team faced Nico Malan High School for the second time this season on 14 August, in what proved to be another competitive and spirited encounter

GLA secured a 49-29 victory a notable progression from their first meeting earlier this year, when GLA achieved their first-ever win over Nico Malan's Fourth Team by 11-6

The result is a testament to the steady upward trajectory of GLA rugby

For the second consecutive year, the school has fielded both a junior and senior team, navigating

the highs and lows that come with building a rugby programme

Under the guidance of coaches, Aubrey Kubayi, Sterrenberg Smith and Eduard Conradie, the players have developed growing confidence and resilience

The 2025 season has been a strong one for the First Team, with many wins and close-fought losses

Two of their toughest challenges came against the respected Nico Malan Fourth Team a side steeped in rugby tradition

Remarkably, GLA not only achieved their first victory over this team but managed to do it twice in one season

Principal Stefan Kleyn said that

the school is grateful for the invaluable support of sponsors, whose investment in their sportswear has boosted both morale and pride on the field

"The commitment from sponsors helps our players represent GLA with pride," said Kleyn

As the 2025 season draws to a close, the school recognises a squad of well-rounded, determined players who with continued leadership and support are laying the foundations of a rugby legacy for GLA

With both junior and senior teams showing strong promise, the school is well-positioned for an even stronger 2026 season

THE U/19A rugby matches will be the highlight of two massive inter-school events this coming Saturday

Framesby will be making the trip from Gqeberha to Humansdorp to resume their rivalry with Nico Malan

In the other inter-school battle, DF Malherbe will be hosting Despatch in Gqeberha

Various events leading up to this weekend's action will take place at all these schools to set the scene and get everyone motivated to produce their very best on the sports fields

DF Malherbe and Despatch will compete in netball, hockey, tennis, chess, golf and cross-country, but rugby will have the final say about who will go away with the bragging rights Nico Malan and Framesby take each other on in netball, tennis, hockey and golf

These two schools have produced very exciting and competitive rugby matches in recent years Nico Malan will be looking for a third consecutive victory against Framesby
