The Hermanus restaurant industry has been left reeling in shock at the tragic news of the restaurant owner Anton Verhoogt’s untimely death in a motorcycle accident over the weekend.
The father of three young children was reportedly on his way home on Saturday evening at approximately 22:40 when his motorcycle was involved in a collission with a motor vehicle on the corner of the R43 and Albertyn Road in the Hermanus Central Business District.
It has since come to light that the driver of the other vehicle was arrested for fleeing from the accident scene and driving under the influence.
Lieutenant Colonel Nicky Steyn, commander of the Hermanus Police detectives, reports that Verhoogt was flung from his motorcycle and later passed away in hospital.
He added: “It is believed the deceased was on his motorcycle on his way home
when a motor vehicle drove in front of him. The driver of the motor vehicle tried to flee from the scene.
“Traffic officials chased him and he was arrested for fleeing from the accident scene and for drunken driving. The suspect was also charged with culpable homicide.”
The Fisherman's Cottage team announced on social media that the popular restaurant’s doors will be closed from Monday 26 to Wednesday 28 May.
The statement reads: “It is with deep sadness that we share the sudden passing of our beloved owner and chef, Anton Verhoogt. Anton was the heart of Fisherman’s Cottage. His passion, creativity, and warmth touched everyone who walked through our doors.
“As we take time to honour his life, Fisherman’s Cottage will be closed from Monday to Wednesday this week. We thank you for your understanding and the incredible support we’ve already received from our community during
this heartbreaking time.
“Anton built more than just a restaurant – he uplifted an entire community with his generosity, heart, and unwavering spirit.
“We will return soon, carrying his legacy forward in all we do.”
Messages of condolences have started flooding in. A BackaBuddy campaign was also started to raise funds for Verhoogt’s widow and three young children. Within five hours, more than R28 000 had already been raised.
A post on social media reads: “This past weekend, our community was devastated by the tragic loss of Anton Verhoogt in a fatal accident. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Nicole, and their three beautiful children.
“Anton was a pillar of strength and kindness – always ready to lend a hand, showing up for others. Now, it’s our turn. A BackaBuddy fund has been created to support Nicole and the children during this heartbreaking time.
“If you are able to contribute, no matter the amount, your support will make a real difference. Let us pay it forward in loving memory of Anton – and for all that he’s done for us.”

The appointment of ODM Speaker Archie Klaas as the new Executive Mayor of the Overstrand has led to quite a shake-up of political figures.
This move resulted in his post as the Speaker of the Overberg District Municipality being vacant. This post was, however, filled last week when Lindile Ntsabo, who had been serving as Acting Mayor for the Overstrand after Dr Annelie Rabie stepped down from the post, was elected as the new Speaker of the ODM.
ODM Municipal Manager Richard Bosman confirmed last week that Ntsabo, who had previously been an ODM councillor before he served as the Deputy Executive Mayor of the Overstrand Municipality, was elected "overwhelmingly by council members" as the new Speaker of the district municipality during a special council meeting held in the Council Chamber at the ODM head office in Bredasdorp.
"During the same meeting the ODM Council also welcomed Annelie Rabie from the Overstrand Municipality, who was sworn in as a new councillor," Bosman stated.
Ntsabo confirmed his "formal resignation as Deputy Executive Mayor of the Overstrand Municipality, effective immediately," following his new appointment.
Ntsabo, who served as Overstrand Mayco member for Public Safety, will in his new position with the ODM also be tasked with Rural Safety and Economic Development.
""It was an opportunity of a lifetime. It was an honour to serve the residents of the Overstrand. I wish to express my sincere appreciation to the staff and public servants who collaborated with me on various
initiatives, including public safety, homelessness, family support, and women's health rights. I am committed to ensuring a smooth transition and am grateful for the opportunity to have served in this capacity. I look forward to contributing to the (ODM) towards Rural Safety and Regional Economic Development. I am excited to work with all of the municipalities within our region," he said in a statement. Following Ntsabo's resignation as OM Deputy Executive Mayor, Elnora Gillion. who has previously served as Deputy Mayor of the Overstrand, was once again elected to this position during a special council meeting held on Friday 23 May. In addition to her new role as Deputy Mayor, Gillion has also been appointed as the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) responsible for Planning and Development.
OM said in a statement that Mayor Klaas has retained several members from the previous Mayoral Committee. Councillor Ronald Nutt has been re-ap-
Hermanus police’s integrated approach to crime fighting seems to be reaping dividends with an overall decrease of 5,1% in crime figures for the month of April.
Station commander Colonel Gustav Tamboer thanked all role-players involved in the fight against crime, including members of the community who assist the police, for their continued contribution to making communities within the greater Hermanus safer for all.
Burglaries at business premises showed a marked decrease of 90% while business robberies dropped by an astounding 100%.
This, said Tamboer, can be attributed to higher visibility of all crime-fighting role players, especially private security companies. “Another important factor is good-communication channels such as WhatsApp groups. The fact that more and more businesses install CCTV and security cameras also serve as deterrent.”
50%), common robbery (+75%), malicious damage to property (+92,8%) and theft of motorvehicle or motorcycle (increased by 50%).
Other good news on the crime front is that property-related crimes dropped by 39,6%, all sexual offences decreased by 60% and the number of attempted murder cases are 75% lower. A decrease of 50% in house robberies was recorderd and a 25% drop in burglaries at residential premises.
pointed as Portfolio Chairperson for Community Services, while Arnie Africa will continue serving as Portfolio Chairperson for Corporate Services. Councillor Stephen Williams has also been reappointed as Portfolio Chair for Finance.
Councillor Andrew Komani has been appointed as the Mayoral Committee Member for Municipal Public Safety, while Councillor Clinton Lerm serve as the Mayoral Committee Member for Infrastructure Services.

Tamboer highlighted the fact that the category crimes dependent on proactive police action for detection spiked by 114,5%. This is seen as a positive increase because the crimes in this category (such as the possession of dangerous weapons and illegal dealing in liquor) often go unreported and rely heavily on police action such as information-driven operations (raids) and Vehicle Check Points for detection.
“Drug-related crimes show an increase of 123,2% while selling liquor without a licence increased by 62,5%. Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs increased by 33,3% and the possession of dangerous weapons by 9,8%,” Tamboer stated.
Categories that showed an increase include murder (up by
Tamboer stated: “This overall reduction proves that our integrated approach to crime shows dividends. A huge thank you to our communities who report crime and assist us to get the criminals behind bars. The South African Police Service has an Informer Claims system that pays members of the public for positive information that leads to arrests and successful prosecution. You can make use of it.”
He added that the police would continue to assist communities with establishing neighbourhood watches and added: “Mount Pleasant is a priority for this. I want to emphasise that crime fighting starts with you. Together we can do it. I salute you all.”

How liable is an owner for damage caused by animals?
One has often read about owners being held liable for a dog attack on a person, but what about an animal on the road which ends up causing an accident? Can the owner be held liable for the resulting damage?
To hold an owner liable for the actions of his domesticated animal, our law provides for a very specific action that can be instituted against an owner to claim compensation for damage or harm suffered as a result of the conduct of the owner’s domesticated animal, namely the actio de pauperie. The action implies a responsibility on the owners of a domesticated animal to exercise a duty of care and due diligence in controlling their animals, which includes taking reasonable steps to ensure that their animals do not escape or wander from their secured area or are a danger to others.
For such a claim to be successful, the following must be proven:
• The person you are claiming from must be the owner of the animal in question.
The damage or injury suffered was a direct result of the animal’s conduct.
• The animal in question was domesticated.
•Defence: The animal acted contra naturam sui generis, meaning contrary to the general nature of domesticated animals. It is important to note that if the animal caused harm because it is frightened, in pain or provoked then it has not acted contra naturam sui generis.
Attacks by pets such as dogs are the first to come to mind when considering damages
caused by domesticated animals.
The High Court of South Africa (Free State Division) in Ralikonyana v De Villiers and Another (4633/2021) [2024] ZAFSHC 3, recently delivered judgment on a matter in which a calf had escaped and wandered into the road, resulting in a collision with a motor vehicle driving on the N8. The court found that the defendant, as the owner of the calf, was expected to take precautionary steps to prevent his cattle from straying onto a public road. Although the kraal in which the calf was kept had been fenced, the court found that the fencing was not in good condition resulting in the calf escaping. The court concluded that the owner of the calf was liable to pay damages suffered by the driver.
South Africa has been crowned the winner of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show for the second consecutive year, firmly cementing its reputation as a country that continues to bloom on international stages.
Leon Kluge, an acclaimed horticulturist and celebrated landscape artist, was once again at the helm of the team that wowed the judges at the world’s pinnacle floral show with a design inspired by South Africa’s two oceans – the Indian and Atlantic – and their influence on local flora, including fynbos.
Kluge, who also led the winning team in 2024, was assisted by his right-hand man Tristan Woudberg, Chris Lochner from the Grootbos Florilegium, Bulelani Bashe from the Grootbos Foundation, well-known gardening TV-show host Tanya Visser and several others.
This year’s gold winning floral display featured 25 000 stems of blooms, including blue Streptocarpus (an indigenous relative of the African violet) and the iconic disa orchid as well as Christmas bells and flame lilies.
The west coast of South Africa was the Atlantic side of the display, featuring colourful geophytes and bright flowers, while the opposite side showcased a lush collection of sub-tropical plants found along the east coast. The display also featured a flowing river, mountain cliffs dotted with indigenous plants and multiple waterfalls.
“The Storms River mouth located on the border of the Western and Eastern Cape inspired the construction of the rivine with its dramatic living cliffs. To portray the amber-coloured water of the Cape mountain streams, hundreds of Rooibos tea bags were soaked in the water to give it a typically South African flavour,” Kluge revealed.
“We would like to thank all our sponsors, including the Grootbos foundation, Hazendal Wine Estate and Southern Sun for their generous support for this
display. Thank you to all the farmers and farmworkers that have contributed to this achievement. We celebrate this gold together and may it encourage us to protect and conserve our beautiful natural heritage!”
Overstrand Executive Mayor Archie Klaas congratulated the team and proudly confirmed that a life-sized replica of this year’s gold-winning RHS Chelsea Flower Show display will once again be recreated in Stanford so that residents of the Overberg as well as visitors to the region can view and experience this beautiful floral exhibition.
Last year, thousands of visitors flocked to Stanford to view the replica of the design that had won three of the most
prestigious awards at the 2024 Chelsea Flower Show in London, when it was displayed for approximately three weeks, courtesy of Grootbos.
Grootbos Foundation and Grootbos Private Nature Reserve confirmed that it will once again be bringing the recreation of the floral display to Stanford for all locals and visitors to enjoy.
“This is an opportunity for South Africans to revel in the splendour of fynbos through Leon’s magnificent floral display,” read the statement by Grootbos.
Chelsea Flowers in Stanford will take place between 10 and 24 September. Tickets will be sold at a cost of R200 per person via Webtickets or in-store at Pick n Pay.
The Overstrand Municipality is gaining momentum – and recognition from around the world – for its Catchment to Coast rehabilitation project.
Thanks to participation in international workshops and summits, the project has drawn global interest, leading to a visit from a group of delegates from South Korea on 22 May. The Environmental Division hosted the group for an educational study tour of the Onrus River catchment. Africa’s chairperson of the Local Governments for Sustainability (ICLEI), Dr Ernita Flynn, Senior Professional Officer: Social-ecological Systems, said counterparts globally have shown a keen
interest in the project, learning a great deal during the visit. “This experience not only helps build valuable partnerships, but also provides motivation and justification for future investment in projects like this.”
The Onrus River Palmiet Peatland gained attention after the severe fires in January 2019 that affected the Overstrand, especially the smouldering areas near the Camphill School. “Later that year, it was also discovered that the Onrus Wetland is also a peatland,” Overstrand Municipal Manager Dean O’Neill stated. “But after many years of degradation, the ecosystem’s resilience had been compromised. As a result, the peatland could no longer play its
key role in reducing floods.”
Ongoing problems such as fires, drought, flooding and erosion have greatly altered the wetland. “Then, during the large flood in September 2023, the weakened areas of palmiet-covered peat couldn’t withstand the force of the floodwaters and large blocks of 10 000-year-old peat washed away, leaving only about a third of the wetland intact. This peat, along with other debris, was carried downstream to Onrus Beach.”
Because peatlands make up just 3% of the earth’s surface, the Onrus Peatland is a rare and valuable ecosystem, as it is also the third oldest in South Africa with a V-valley bottom shape, which in itself is
also rare.
Mayor Archie Klaas said it warmed his heart to meet the South Korean delegates and to see their interest in learning about the Catchment to Coast rehabilitation project. “It’s important for us to understand just how valuable wetlands are,” he said.
“Although the lost peat cannot be replaced, there is still time to rehabilitate the wetland to a functional/desired state. Urgent rehabilitation is needed to stop further degradation
“If we don’t act now, climate change will continue to threaten both this unique ecosystem and the surrounding infrastructure along the Onrus River.”

Anne-Marie Burger het vir dié dag ’n tak-vergadering, inligtingsessie, Women Walk the World (WWTW) en “Funky tekkies” alles in een by 7 Owls in Napier gereël.
When you walk through the doors of the new Wellness Hub of Kidbrooke Place Retirement Village, you immediately feel at home.
According to Christa Marais, the Care Centre Manager, this hub is designed to provide care and support for residents requiring either frail or memory care, as well as being the nerve centre for the provision of home-based care throughout the Kidbrooke Community.
The new premises mark a significant milestone in Kidbrooke’s commitment to providing holistic, person-directed care for all residents, as the Wellness Hub will also provide services to indepen-
dent-living residents, such as the clinic for primary health care. Also available is a treatment room, should a resident need a space to consult with a specialist medical service provider like physiotherapists or occupational therapists. “The wellness hub is something special and we as staff were also able to provide our input regarding the design of the hub,” she said.
“The therapeutic garden will offer a safe and secure area for residents to wander – and even potter in the raised garden beds for those with green fingers.”
The rooms are tastefully decorated with paintings by former residents and photographs taken by the residents themselves. Even the Kidbrooke logo, the
protea, is affixed to the sliding doors and windows. “The well-designed spaces provide wonderful support for our residents’ well-being, addressing their physical, emotional, and social health needs.”
According to Christa the idea of a wellness hub took hold in 2014. “The Wellness Hub concept began with a revised care strategy in 2014 with more wide-ranging and focused research over the past five years. Kidbrooke’s trustees, management and care staff, together with a team of experienced industry experts, most notably Rob Jones, Karen Brockowich and Kestrel Studios (the architects), have ensured that all aspects of functionality have been addressed.
“Above all, the primary focus has centered around creating a homely environment for the residents, with an emphasis on natural light and comfort.”
Even load shedding cannot affect the operation of the wellness hub. In addition, the building has incorporated both solar power and a generator to ensure no electricity outages, as well as heat-pump technology to reduce energy usage for water heating, and a conservancy tank to collect all rainwater for irrigation purposes.
The Wellness Hub will officially open its doors on 30 May, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by various stakeholders.
Hermanus has transformed its traditionally-quiet winter months into a vibrant celebration of arts and culture through the Hermanus FynArts Festival, which has rapidly evolved into one of South Africa’s most respected arts events since its founding in June 2013.
Now in its 12th year, the festival has established itself as a beacon for artistic expression in the Western Cape, drawing discerning visitors from across the country and beyond during what was once considered the region’s off-season tourism period. What began as a hybrid event combining elements of an arts festival and a winter school has blossomed into a classic-feel arts festival with a distinctive character.
The inaugural event in 2013 was met with enthusiastic reception, laying the foundation for its continued expansion. Over the past decade, FynArts has transcended its initial conception as a tourism initiative, evolving into a comprehensive celebration that promotes various artistic disciplines including visual arts, music, literature, and performance.
This evolution reflects the festival’s core purpose: enhancing the arts in the Greater Hermanus area while providing meaningful opportunities for both established and emerging artists.
Throughout the year FynArts hosts activities and community-based projects that contribute to the artistic growth of the region. This year-round engagement underscores the organisation’s commitment to
sustained cultural development rather than a single-event approach.
Several key milestones mark the festival’s journey. In 2016, FynArts registered as a non-profit organisation (NPO) and established the FynArts Development Fund, also an NPO. Two years later, in 2018, the organisation expanded its footprint with the opening of the FynArts Gallery, which features rotating exhibitions of work by South African artists, many of whom have participated in festival exhibitions. By 2021, the festival achieved public-benefit organisation (PBO) status, further cementing its role in the community.
The FynArts Gallery has become a cultural landmark, showcasing the depth and diversity of South African artistic talent. Its rotating exhibitions ensure fresh perspectives and continued engagement with the local community and visitors alike. Through its various initiatives FynArts emphasises capacity building and employ-
ment opportunities for youth, particularly through community-based arts projects. These efforts represent a conscious strategy to use the arts as a vehicle for social and economic development in the region.
The FynArts Development Fund, as the sole beneficiary of the festival, plays a crucial role in this community focus. It supports numerous projects throughout the year aimed at promoting and enhancing the arts in underserved communities.
What started as a modest effort to bring arts to a coastal town during its quieter months has blossomed into an institution that shapes the cultural landscape of the entire region year-round.
The festival’s relatively short but rich history demonstrates how thoughtful cultural initiatives become integral parts of a community’s identity and economic vitality. FynArts has become not just an event, but a movement.

Three young learners from Generations School in Hermanus have made the Overstrand region proud by winning the school AI Hackathon and being selected as the only team from the Overstrand to be submitted to the national judging panel of the 2025 IEB-TechWays AI Hackathon.
Learners Liam Knapp and Charlotte Jackson were chosen to represent Generations Hermanus in the Grade 6-8 category with their AI (artificial intelligence) concept aimed at solving youth unemployment in their local community. Their project uses AI to match young people with short-term job opportunities and skills training based on their location and interests. “It’s such a young team and yet they put real thought into how technology could help their community,” said Joanne Brink, founder of TechWays and fellow Hermanus resident. “We were inspired by their energy and the heart behind their solution.”
Charlotte is very excited about this opportunity. “We just wanted to make something that helps other kids like us find ways to earn money,” she explained. “It’s really cool to represent Hermanus at the nationals.”
The IEB-TechWays AI Hackathon involves over 900 learners from more than 60 schools across South Africa. The top entries will be recognised at the National AI Awards, where winning teams will be announced live during a live-streamed national broadcast.
Liam Knapp and Charlotte Jackson were chosen to represent Generations Hermanus with their AI concept, in the Grade 6-8 category, aimed at solving youth unemployment in their local community.
“It’s incredibly exciting to see our learners thinking about real-world challenges and designing meaningful, tech-driven solutions,” said Nikki Malcomess, principal of Generations Hermanus. “This is what future-focused education looks like.”
• TechWays equips South African youth with the digital skills they need to thrive, offering accessible, marketrelevant courses in coding, AI, cybersecurity, and more. More than 10 000 high-school learners have earned certifications through TechWays programmes. It also supports schools through AI training for teachers and admin staff, and runs the national IEB-TechWays AI Hackathon, where learners design AI solutions to real-world challenges.
Seguaney Dramat is as Swartberg Primêr se dux-leerder vir 2024 aangewys. Seguaney is tans in graad vyf.
Sý is Slabbert & Slabbert Uitgewers!

What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell just as sweet.” “My karakter is redelik vaal. Haar produksie gaan juis oor ’n naam – jou naam! Maak jou naam jou wie jy is? “Ek probeer dit so lig as moonlik hou – ek bly weg van politiek.”

Explore nature’s influence at this year’s FynArts, through music, words and creativity.
The following events relate to humankind’s connection with nature, from space and the atmosphere to birds, flowers and landscapes. Each offers a unique perspective on art, science and storytelling, opportunities to reflect on the natural world through fresh lenses.
• Symphony and Science with Philip Southey. An extraordinary musical presentation that includes the unique sounds of cosmological piano improvisation and quantum bagpiping. Southey is not only an accomplished pianist, guitarist and bagpiper, but also a physicist. Date: 13 June at the Municipal Auditorium.
• One Person One Note with Pedro, The MusicMan. Bring your children of any age to a fun (and educational) hour with Pedro Espi-Sanchis to celebrate the musical creativity of the ancestors in an hour of interactive entertainment for the whole family. Date: 15 June at the Municipal Auditorium.
The Madness of Orchids with Margaret
Abbott. “The wild history of orchid madness” is her topic for her third Gardentainment presentation at FynArts. This Victorian obsession drove collectors to undertake expeditions driven by status and eccentricity. You will also visit Hollywood actor Raymond Burr’s lush botanical Garden of the Sleeping Giant in Fiji, a collection of orchids indigenous to the islands. Date: 10 June
• A History of Flowers in Art. Flowers, featured in classical and botanical art since the days of ancient Greece and Egypt, have carried meaning and sparked desire. Kayleen Wrigley, Strauss & Co auction-house art specialist, will show how world trade, passion and economics have long intersected with floral imagery.
Date: 11 June
• Changing Bird Profiles with Anton Ondendal. Altogether 57 bird species have been newly recorded in the Overberg since 2004. These interesting additions alongside the Overberg’s endemics underscore the region’s status as a premier birding destination. Anton will explore the possible explanations for these changes.

Vanjaar is meer as 390 inskrywings ontvang.

What began as a modest after-school day-care centre has blossomed into a beacon of educational hope for dozens of local children.
Fynbos Academy, on the Langverwacht Farm near Stanford, is now a fully-fledged academic school with 58 learners and seven dedicated teachers. This school has established itself as an institution committed to nurturing potential in children who might otherwise struggle in conventional educational settings. A school spokesperson explained: “Our approach has always been to create a supportive environment where each child can thrive and by maintaining smaller class sizes, we can give personalised attention to learners who come from challenging circumstances and might not flourish in larger classroom settings.”
The academy’s educational philosophy centres on individualised attention. Beyond assisting with daily homework, the school employs professionally qualified educators who provide specialised tuition in literacy and numeracy. This targeted approach aims to unlock each child’s full potential, regardless of their background or learning challenges.
While the academy has already made remarkable strides in primary education, its leadership team has unveiled ambitious plans for expansion. “Our immediate priority is achieving sustainable financial operations,” the spokesperson said. “Once we’ve secured that founda-
tion we aim to expand into a high school over the next five years.”
Perhaps most ambitious is the academy’s long-term goal to offer tertiary education on its premises. This proposed institution will place strong emphasis on technical and agricultural skills development, addressing critical gaps in the local workforce. “We recognise that not every student’s path leads to university,” the school stated. “Many of our learners have tremendous potential in technical and agricultural fields. By eventually offering tertiary education with this focus, we can provide genuine career pathways for our graduates while serving community needs.”
The growth of Fynbos Academy represents more than just educational advancement; it symbolises hope for a com-
munity where educational opportunities have historically been limited. Parents report seeing significant improvements in their children’s academic performance and confidence since enrolling at the academy. The school’s holistic approach to education, addressing both academic needs and personal development, has earned it a growing recognition. As Fynbos Academy works towards financial sustainability and future expansion it continues to demonstrate how targeted educational interventions can transform lives and communities. From humble beginnings as an after-school haven to ambitious plans for comprehensive education through tertiary level, the academy’s journey reflects the power of vision and commitment to educational excellence.

Suzuki is on a roll with new product launches and this month it is the turn of their AB sedan segment marker leader, the Dzire, which is India’s best-selling sedan. After 11 years on our market it is getting a new body, new engine, new platform; the new Dzire sub-compact from Suzuki is geared up to obliterate the opposition. Not only is the pricing really sharp, but specification on the GL+ is excellent and, in addition, rear leg room is good and the boot is big for the AB segment of the market.
For the launch we drove a long loop from Rosebank, south of Johannesburg, and back to the Digital Dome at Wits going via
the old women’s prison at Constitution Hill for lunch. A good mix of city traffic and open road. Undoubtedly the Dzire will make an excellent small company car, as the boot just gives one more security for bags and other high-value articles.
This new Dzire is very good looking from all angles, even a little sporty, especially at the back.
The interior has been upgraded and offers all the essential items, even power points and a vent for the rear. Two things I don’t like much are the 7” touchscreen in a housing big enough for a 9” screen and the light upholstery, albeit both highly subjective. Still, a pleasant cabin with comfortable seats and a feeling of space. The GL+ varient has cruise control, reverse camera and a digital airconditioner.
The boot is in fact 100 L bigger than that of the Swift.
This little sedan has the same Z12E three-cylinder turbo mill and gearboxes as the Swift. Suzuki claims a fuel consumption of 4.4 L/100 km, but I think 5 or just above 5 is more realistic. I would say there is adequate power but performance is not that sprightly.
The only issues I found were the very light cream interior upholstery and at altitude the engine is working hard, requiring a lot of gear changing. At the coast this is not an issue.
The Dzire is built in India for the sub-continent and surrounding markets, which means that their tastes in upholstery and specification is not always 100% the same as ours. Unfortunately,
we are such a small market that it is not always possible to supply us with our first choice and as a result we have the very light upholstery for the moment. If sales justify it, a more suitable colour will be supplied for our market.
In the showroom the light interior gives an impression of lightness and space so it may just appeal to private buyers.
The specification of our version differs quite a bit from the Indian home market. Styling is more restrained with less use of chrome for our cars. We get a CVT instead of their AMT, we lose the leather steering wheel, sunroof, 360 camera, wireless charging and get a more basic infotainment system. We still get all the basics with cruise control, automatic climate control with rear AC vents,
The off-road community is buzzing with excitement as preparations begin for what promises to be the most challenging hill climb event of the year. Off Road Adventures and Grabow 4x4 have joined forces to present the inaugural Ultimate Hill Climb Challenge 2025, set to take place on 26 July at Grabouw 4x4.
This groundbreaking event will mark the first-ever attempt to conquer Willie’s Poort, a formidable hill that has remained unchallenged until now. Adding to the intensity, the event is scheduled during the rainy season, which organisers say will “intensify the difficulty level by somewhat” and test drivers’ skills to their limits. “We wanted to create something truly challenging that would push both drivers and vehicles to their absolute limits,” the organisers said.
“Willie’s Poort offers the perfect ter-
rain for this inaugural event, which we plan to make an annual fixture in the off-road calendar,” Willie Landman said. He said the meticulously designed course will be divided into marked sections, with participants earning points for completing each section without touching the markers. Speed will also be a crucial factor, with timing playing a significant role in determining the winners.
Competitors will battle across four distinct categories:
• King of the Hill – For those who successfully conquer the hill with the least points lost, in the shortest time, and with the most spectacular driving style;
• Highest point reached – Recognising those who make it furthest up the challenging terrain;
• Shortest time – Celebrating the speed demons of the competition;
• Most spectacular drive – Acknowledging the most impressive and crowd-pleasing performances.
“A special highlight of the event will be the brand rivalry, pitting Jeep against Land Rover, Nissan Patrol, and Toyota Land Cruiser in a battle for off-road supremacy,” Landman said Substantial prizes await the victors. Entry is limited to just 20 vehicles, ensuring an exclusive and well-managed event. The R800 entry fee includes an official Ultimate Hill Climb 2025 T-shirt. You can enter via the Off Road Adventures App or visit www.offroadadventures.co.za.
Safety remains a priority, with a medical team stationed on the hill and mandatory indemnity forms for all participants. The organisers wuld like to thank: Raw 4x4 Suspension Equipment,
and a multi-info display.
Crucially, six airbags, ESC, rear parking sensors, and ISOFIX mounts are standard across the range.
The new Dzire enjoys a five-star adult and four-star child-occupant protection Indian Ncap rating. It indeed has all the safety kit one would expect.
The direct competition is the Honda Amaze, Hyundai Grand i10 and Kia Pegas, but all are more expensive, being R25 000 to R50 000 more. VW’s Polo sedan is a R100 000 more. The base GA 5MT is R224 900, the GL+ 5MT R246 900 and the CVT version R266 900. I would recommend CVT.
Dzire has a 5-year/200 000 km promotional warranty and includes a 4-year/60 000 km service plan.

“Ek is ’n
