Extortionate gang killers to serve

HERMANUS

– Two members of the Junior Mafia gang have been sentenced to long-term imprisonment for the assassination of abalone poacher Cameron Marc Padayachee, who was murdered in Hermanus in 2021 after refusing to pay extortion money to the gang.

Western Cape NPA spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila, on Monday 1 December, stated Hermanus Regional Court had handed the sentences down after both accused entered into plea and sentencing agreements with the state.

He said the court convicted Paul Adams and Ismail Khan of premeditated murder and aiding and abetting criminal gang activity. Adams was further convicted of illegal possession of abalone.

“The accused were members of the Junior Mafias between September and December 2021, and they knowingly acted to benefit the gang.”

Ntabazalila said Adams admitted to ordering the hit on Padayachee.

“In his confession Adams confirmed he had instructed two

other members, Ismail Khan and Renaldo van der Bergh, to kill Padayachee because he had refused to pay extortion. Padayachee was expected to pay a percentage of his illegal abalone proceeds to the gang.”

On the day of the killing Khan and Van der Bergh collected a firearm from Adams before confronting Padayachee on Kapokblom Street, Blompark.

“Van der Bergh fired eight shots at the deceased while he was working on a vehicle,”

Ntabazalila said. “He died on the scene.”

Padayachee’s young children were in the vehicle at the time.

“The deceased’s minor children witnessed the assassination. They were severely traumatised,” Ntabazalila said.

He added that this was not the first attempt on Padayachee’s life. Adams was sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment, with four years suspended, and an additional five years for contravening the Marine Living Resources Act.

The sentences will run concurrently, resulting in an effective 16-year sentence.

“He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm,” Ntabazalila said.

Khan was sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment, with five years suspended.

“Khan confirmed that he and Van der Bergh were acting for the benefit of the gang and he urged Van der Bergh to shoot the deceased, shouting repeatedly ‘Dala what you must, maak die nommer vol’,” Ntabazalila said.

Van der Bergh was serving 30 years after entering his own plea agreement.

Regional prosecutor Ilse Keyser argued that the murder was a calculated act of intimidation. Ntabazalila said the state emphasised the wider impact of the crime.

“This murder was meant to teach Padayachee and other poachers to obey orders and pay the gang their percentage or face consequences,” he said.

“The accused had no regard for the safety of the deceased’s children, who were close enough to have been struck by a stray bullet.”

Western Cape Director of Public Prosecutions Adv Nicolette Bell applauded the investigation and prosecution team for ensuring justice was served. She said environmental crimes are often linked to organised crime.

“Criminal networks exploit weak regulations and enforcement using tactics such as corruption, violence and fraud.”

• Hermanus Times reported on 28 September 2022 (“Moord: Bendelid gaan vir 30 j sit”) that an Overstrand gang member was sentenced to 30 years in prison last week after being found guilty of the murder of Cameron Marc Padayachee of Blompark, Gansbaai in December 2021.

Ronaldo van der Berg (24), a member of the Junior Mafia gang operating in Gansbaai, Buffeljags and Stanford were also sentenced to 10 years in prison on a charge of attempted murder, 10 years for illegal possession of a firearm and five years for the illegal possession of ammunition. Although the sentence is 55 years in total, the court ordered that Van der Berg must serve 30 years. He was declared unfit to possess a firearm.

NSRI had ’n besige naweek in Overstrand

Justice served after 3-year legal battle in assault case

After nearly three years of legal proceedings justice is finally within reach for a domestic-abuse survivor whose father’s intervention helped bring her alleged attacker to court.

The 64-year-old farmowner from Riviersonderend is expected to plead to a charge of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm on 16 February 2026.

“Fortunately she has a father who looks after her, otherwise I don’t know what would have happened to her,” said the victim’s father, reflecting on a harrowing journey that began with a brutal assault in October 2023.

TWO DECADES OF ABUSE

The case stems from what the father describes as a toxic 20-year on-and-off relationship between his daughter and the accused. “They were in an on-andoff relationship for 20 years, and my daughter lived with him in his house in Voëlklip from 2019, where he accommodated her and my granddaughter.”

What made the situation particularly distressing for the family was that the victim’s young daughter was also exposed to the abuse.

“What’s the worst for me is that my granddaughter also had to go through hell,” the father said.

THE BREAKING POINT

The turning point came on 18 October 2023, during what would become the final assault. “After the last incident, in which 11 cm x 11 cm of her hair was pulled out, I decided enough is enough, took her to the police station and opened a case,” the father recalled. Hermanus Times initially reported on the assault on 8 November 2023 under the headline “Beaten, hair pulled out”. According to court records the alleged assault occurred while the couple was driving to the accused’s home in Voëlklip. The victim’s father said she managed to escape after the accused pulled bundles of hair from her scalp, leaving her with visible bald patches.

COURT PROCEEDINGS

The accused, who owns a large farm outside Riviersonderend, handed himself over to police on Sunday 29 October 2023. He spent two nights in custody before being released on R1 000 bail following his first appearance in the Hermanus Magistrates’ Court on 30 October 2023.

Defence attorney Willem Boshoff told

the court that his client owned a farm, had never been convicted of a crime, had no pending criminal charges, and intended to plead not guilty. The victim, who requested anonymity, told the court she was not opposed to bail being granted, provided the accused had no contact with her. When asked if she intended to proceed with the charges, she emphatically replied “yes”. She also indicated she was obtaining a protection order against the accused.

LEGAL BATTLE AND VICTORY

The path to justice was not straightforward. “The alleged woman beater did everything in his power to get the case thrown out,” the father related, “hired the best lawyers and even brought an interdict against my daughter.”

Despite the legal manoeuvring the case proceeded through the courts, ultimately resulting in a trial.

ROAD TO RECOVERY

The father says the years of abuse have left lasting scars on his 42-year-old daughter, but he’s encouraged by her progress.

“She is slowly starting to recover, has now found work and is also getting her self-image back. It will still be a long road to recovery, but there is light at the end of the tunnel.”

The upcoming trial represents more than personal closure for the family.

“The victory in court is not just a victory for us, but for all women who go through the hell of abuse,” the father said.

MESSAGE OF HOPE

For other women facing similar situations, the father's message is clear: “Just get your support system right, but you are worth more than going through abuse.”

As the family prepares for the 16 February trial the father reflects on their journey: “It’s a long road to recovery, but a satisfying road.”

The case highlights both the persistence required to seek justice in domestic abuse situations and the crucial role that family support can play in helping victims break free from cycles of violence.

Simplify your debtcollection process

Taking the right approach to legal recoveries is essential for maintaining financial stability in any business. With proactive planning and effective response strategies companies can significantly reduce risk and improve their ability to resolve disputes efficiently.

Pre-legal recoveries focus on preventing matters from escalating into costly legal battles. This includes implementing strong credit risk management policies, engaging with customers early when payment concerns arise, and adopting preventive strategies aimed at reducing the likelihood of future disputes. By addressing issues before they develop into formal claims, businesses often avoid the need for litigation altogether.

When disputes have already progressed, post-legal recoveries provide structured solutions to help businesses regain control. These services include debt collection, pursuing legal action where necessary to enforce rights through the court system, and undertaking asset recovery to identify and secure assets linked to outstanding obligations.

Serial rapist gets four life terms

A 28-year-old serial rapist from Grabouw has been sentenced to four life terms plus 63 years’ imprisonment by the Cape High Court, marking a significant victory in the fight against gender-based violence (GBV).

Sihle Makaula was convicted and sentenced on Monday 25 November on multiple charges of rape, robbery and assault committed against four female victims between July 2019 and August 2020 in the Grabouw area. The court also declared Makaula unfit to possess a firearm. The breakthrough came through DNA evidence that positively linked the accused to the crime scenes, the victims’ inability to identify the perpetrator having prevented this. The investigation was conducted by the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit.

The court imposed the following sentences: Count 1 (Assault GBH): Three years’ imprisonment; Counts 2, 4, 6, 8 (Rape): Life imprisonment each; Counts 3, 5, 7, 9 (Robbery). He was to serve 15 years for each.

Grabouw Police Station Commander Col Winston Coetzee commended the investigating officer, Sgt M. Jubati, and the prosecuting team for securing justice for the victims. “This sentence is most welcome

and sends a strong message during the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children, that these horrific crimes and abuses of women and children will not go unpunished.”

NATIONAL CONTEXT

The sentencing comes at a time when South Africa was grappling with high levels of GBV. President Cyril Ramaphosa recently declared violence against women a national disaster, highlighting the urgent need for decisive action against perpetrators.

The timing of the sentencing, during the annual 16 Days of Activism which runs from 25 November to 10 December, added particular significance to the court’s decision. The case demonstrated the critical role of forensic evidence in securing convictions in sexual-violence cases, particularly where victims are unable to identify their attackers due to trauma or other factors. Makaula’s conviction and severe sentencing represented a rare instance of success when GBV cases often go unreported or result in acquittals.

The FCS Unit’s thorough investigation and successful DNA matching that linked Makaula to all four crime scenes has been praised as exemplary police work.

Gets life for taking wife’s life

Victor Ndabangaye has been sentenced to an effective life imprisonment following his conviction for murdering his wife and assaulting family members, marking the first life sentence for domestic violence handed down at the Hermanus Regional Court. Ndabanyaya would have appeared in court on Thursday 29 August 2024 on charges relating to a domestic violence-related incident in 2023 in which he allegedly assaulted his wife. Instead, he appeared on the same date on a charge of murder after he allegedly beat her to death with a panga on Sunday 14 July 2024 (Hermanus Times 11 September 2024, “Wife killed in front of witnesses”).

The court sentenced Ndabangaye to life imprisonment for the murder charge and five years’ direct imprisonment for each of two assault counts that had been filed by his daughter prior to his wife’s killing. Western Cape Director of Public Prosecutions Adv Nicolette Bell praised the investigation and prosecution teams for their determination in securing justice for the victim and her family.

The conviction represents a significant milestone in the regional court’s handling of gender-based violence cases. Ndabangaye was found guilty on one count of murder for killing his wife and two separate

counts of assault, demonstrating a pattern of domestic violence that escalated to fatal consequences. The assault charges, which were opened by the victim’s daughter before her mother's murder, provided crucial evidence of the accused's history of family violence.

Bell specifically acknowledged the extraordinary courage displayed by witnesses who came forward to testify in the case.

“[I] acknowledged the courage, resilience, and grace demonstrated by the witnesses in stepping forward to share their harrowing experiences and in actively participating in the criminal justice process.”

She emphasised that the witnesses' willingness to engage with the justice system, despite the profound personal trauma involved “reflects extraordinary strength and contributes meaningfully to the pursuit of justice.”

The Director of Public Prosecutions used the sentencing as an opportunity to highlight the ongoing nature of the fight against gender-based violence and femicide.

“Our efforts in the fight against gender-based violence and femicide will and must continue beyond the 16 Days of Activism of No Violence Against Women and Children,” Bell said.

Bredasdorp-kore presteer puik in Allegretto-kompetisie

Mitzi Buys

Bikers’ charity ride

The fact that hundreds of bikers from Cape Town and surrounds as well as from all over the Overberg regularly partake in the annual Overberg Toy Run definitely dispels the misconception many people have of bikers. Bikers have big hearts when it comes to charity, especially where children are concerned.

On Sunday 30 November the parking area of Caledon Fresh Stop was a spectacular sight to behold. Leather jackets, boots, helmets, badges and gleaming machines laden with toys were at the order of the day. There was a buzz of excitement in the air with lots of bike talk and final securing of toys to the bikes before the procession of bikes left for the Birkenhead Brewery outside Stanford.

Many bikers do the Toy Run and other charity rides every year. Some out-of-town bikers told Hermanus Times that they particularly like this ride not only because of the large number of participants but because of the beautiful scenic route.

For well-known Caledon businessman

Pottie Potgieter this year was his 10th Toy Run. “I have ridden every year since 2015. To be able to help less privileged children is a cause close to my heart, especially as it is for children from the Overberg region. Family and friends contribute and then my wife Amanda and I buy the toys as well as stationery. For me it’s a way of giving something back to the community.”

Annuska Beyers, who always stands out because of her fun costume rode her fourth Toy Run on Sunday. Annuska missed last year’s Toy Run as she has moved to Alice Springs, Australia, but this year she has a special story.

“I came back to South Africa to get married and actually we got married the day before the Toy Run. Just before going on our honeymoon I convinced my husband Tiaan to come and do the Toy Run, his first one. So this will be my last Toy Run for quite a while and sadly we have to sell our bike.” Despite the sweltering heat both Annuska and Tiaan were dressed in fluffy bear and bunny costumes respectively and their bike proudly displayed a sign saying “Just Married”.

The toys will be distributed to less fortunate children across the Overberg.

Nuwe koerant maak buiging

DRUKMEDIA STAAN SY MAN

A good newspaper is a nation in dialogue with itself’.”

Students catch the wind

Three young people from the Overberg region were recently selected for a wind-turbine technician-training programme.

The fact that the three trainees were selected from a pool of more than 150 applicants, all of whom held relevant NQF Level 4 qualifications or National Diplomas in fields such as Electrical, Mechatronics and Fitters and Turners, is no mean feat and highlights the depth of talent and potential among local youth in the area.

This training programme is aimed at equipping young people with the skills needed to support economic growth and address the shortage of technical expertise in the renewable-energy sector.

This year’s trainees, Nomabathu Siyasanga (32), Neoentle Maqetela (22), both from Caledon, and Nozuko Mjeje (35) from Grabouw, are the programme’s second intake. Having completed the intensive six-month theoretical component of the course they already recognise the value of the training. One of the trainees said: “This has been a game changer for me. I have learnt so much about renewable energy systems and the importance of safety and efficiency in wind turbine design. The course has given me valuable insights into the complex engineering behind harnessing wind energy. I’m excited to apply what I’ve learned in real-world situations and to contribute to a more sustainable future.”

The six-month course is followed by a two-month practical training at the Klipheuwel Wind Farm outside Caledon, providing these young electricians with real-world experience.

Nonini Makhothe, Economic Development Specialist at Klipheuwel Wind Farm, highlighted the strong potential within the surrounding communities and the wind farm’s commitment to supporting more local technicians, commenting: “The success of the programme’s first year has shown us the incredible potential within our communities and the capability of our young people. What is even more encouraging is the strong number of applicants this year, which demonstrates their determination to be part of the renewable energy sector. Their achievements are truly inspiring and we remain committed to this impactful programme, which is helping local technicians gain valuable skills, access opportunities and build secure futures in the industry.”

On completion of the programme

trainees will receive an accredited Quality Council of Trades and Occupations (QCTO) Occupational Certificate: Wind Turbine Service Technician. The training, developed by the South African Renewable Energy Development Centre (SARETEC), a division of the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT), includes both theoretical and practical components.

The programme is open to applicants from the communities surrounding the wind farm, including Bot River, Caledon, Grabouw, Genadendal, Tesselaarsdal, Riviersonderend and Villiersdorp. All participants require qualifications, such as an NQF Level 4 in Electrician (Light Voltage, Medium Voltage, High Voltage), Mechatronics, Millwright, Fitters and Turners or a National Diploma in Mechanical, Electrical or Mechatronics.

Lede van Badisa se dagsorgsentrum in Riviersonderend geniet hul aktiwiteite elke dag. Bo is van hulle aan die tuinmaak.

Rugby heroes fêted in OM chambers

Overstrand Municipality turned its council chambers into a celebration venue last week as local officials honoured the remarkable achievements of rugby teams and players who have brought pride to the region through recent victories at provincial and national level.

The star of the show was the Walker Bay women’s rugby team, affectionately known as the “Walker Bay Babes” who made history by winning their fifth consecutive Super 8 Championship last Saturday.

The team has also claimed the Club Champions title for five straight years, cementing their dominance in women's rugby.

“The Walker Bay babes serve as a feeder team for the Boland provincial squad,” Mayco member for Community Services and Ward 4 councillor Ronald Nutt pointed out, “with several players making it to the highest levels of South African rugby.”

His ward includes Mount Pleasant, where several of the players are from. “They are showing young girls in our communities that there are real opportunities in sport, and particularly in women's rugby.”

Executive Mayor Archie

Klaas took time out to celebrate Aseza Hele, known locally as “Blommie”, who was a standout player for the Springbok Women’s Rugby Team at Rugby World Cup 2025.

“Blommie is known as the ‘sweetheart’ off the field,” he mentioned, “but when that whistle blows, eish, she turns into a powerhouse!” Klaas

remarked. The loose forward was recognised, not only for her on-field prowess but the inspiration she brought to women’s rugby across South Africa.

Nutt described her as “a true icon for Overstrand, motivating young rugby players to believe in their dreams and pursue them with the same

passion and commitment.

The celebration also acknowledged Layla Arrison, who has taken on a pioneering role as a commentator for SuperSport, covering both men’s and women’s cricket and rugby. Arrison, daughter of Overstrand Municipality’s Director of Corporate Services Desireé Arrison, was instrumental in

establishing women’s rugby at Stellenbosch University, where she captained the institution’s first-ever women's rugby team.

The Atlantics RFC from Mount Pleasant capped off the celebrations, having been crowned Boland Super 16 Champions in Wellington over the weekend. What made their achievement particularly special was their unbeaten run throughout the entire season. Captain Conway Sauls was present to accept a certificate on behalf of his team. His father, Colin Sauls, serves as one of the coaching staff. “ Waa’s ons? Hie’s ons! ” Nutt exclaimed, commending Conway for his exceptional leadership, team spirit and dedication.

Klaas, who attended the championship finals in Wellington, couldn’t contain his enthusiasm: “I will never forget it for as long as I live. The atmosphere in the stadium was electric, and it gave me goosebumps all the way. The original Overstrand Derby is back, and I cannot wait for the new season!"

The ceremony highlighted the municipality’s commitment to supporting local sport and recognising the sportspeople and athletes who continue to put Overstrand on the map through exceptional achievements, particularly in rugby.

With just days to go until the Hot Summer of Touch series, organisers are gearing up for its 25th instalment as record numbers are expected after pre-registrations reached a peak.

"After a tough few years during and after Covid, the series once again sprung to life last year. The Series has become an annual highlight of the 'Summer Rugby Programme,” said Western and Southern Beach Touch Association (WSCBTA) Chair Gerome Vermeulen.

Although sponsorship has been hard to come by, this event has such a loyal following in the Overberg that the organisers feel it’s their obligation and

responsibility to the youth to ensure its long-term future.

The Hot Summer of Touch series gets underway on Sunday 7 December in Camps Bay and then heads to the soft sand of Kleinmond the following Sunday (14th) before heading back to the Basin for the season highlights at Strand (16th) and Macassar (21st) before heading up the Southern Cape Coastline to Struisbaai (23rd), Stilbaai (26th), Mosselbay (27th) and Hartenbos (29th).

This series has been growing since its first inception over two decades ago.

Beach touch rugby-loving fanatics can look forward to seeing the two-time champion Liberty Webb Touchies trying to make it three in a row.

They will be fighting off challenges from seven-time previous winners the Score Forward Legends and three-time winner the Unknown Warriors.

The UD Targo team and Underdogs may cause a few upsets, and one can never write of the Reds, Most Wanted and new boys the Struisbaai Warriors who will make their debut appearance in the Pro Series this year!

The competition is also incredibly strong in the Challenger section with all these teams vying for a place in the 2026 Pro Series with the Scorpions, Last Kings, BT Blizzards, and Macassar Touch teams leading the way for their place at the elite table.

"The sand always brings out the best

Liberty Webb 3 in a row?

in side-stepping, raw talent and handling skills” said Vermeulen who also commented that Springbok hero Damian Willemse and current Blitzbok star Ricardo (Tricky Ricky) as well as many other Springboks and provincial players had cut their teeth on the beaches of the Hot Summer of Touch over the past 24 years.

Teams can register on the newly updated Hot Summer of Touch series website (https://hotsummeroftouch.co.za/) or call WhatsApp 065 362 8241.

The action on the sand gets underway from as early as 09:15 on each event day, with teams still being allowed to enter and register their teams on each morning of the event from 07:15.
