Pedestrian safety on Western Cape roads is a growing concern.
Over the past three weeks 33 pedestrians have lost their lives in road-traffic incidents across the Western Cape, making up a significant portion of the 60 fatalities recorded in this period
So, the Western Cape Government is deeply concerned about the safety of pedestrians, who remain among the most vulnerable road users. These statistics paint a stark picture of the dangers on the province’s roads and underscore the critical need for heightened pedestrian-safety awareness.
“It is concerning that almost 55% of fatalities on our roads involve pedestrians, with several more hospitalised. These incidents not only cause immense grief and suffering, but also bring economic challenges to the affected families and loved ones. Our traffic law-enforcement officers will continue to help prevent pedestrian
incidents by enforcing traffic laws and responding to pedestrian incidents Upholding traffic regulations, including speed limits, signals and road signs, can enhance overall road safety. We all have a part to play in keeping our roads safe and achieving the target of halving deaths and serious injuries on our roads,” said Muneera Allie, Head of Communication, Western Cape Mobility Department.
Factors such as alcohol consumption, jaywalking and speeding contribute significantly to the high incidence of fatalities
Compliance with traffic laws by both drivers and pedestrians is crucial for enhancing pedestrian safety
While walking is an excellent way to exercise, travel, get to work or enjoy the outdoors, it is essential to avoid risky behaviours like crossing streets outside of designated crossings, pedestrian bridges or dangerous highways. Such actions can lead to severe accidents, injuries, and even fatalities.
Speeding can have a significant impact on pedestrian safety. Any speed above 30 km/h increases the risk of a pedestrian sustaining serious or fatal injuries if hit by a vehicle. The risk of a crash increases with the speed of the vehicle since it takes longer to stop. The driver also has less time to react to avoid a collision, or could lose control of the vehicle completely Drivers should be vigilant and slow down in areas of high pedestrian activity, particularly around schools and shopping centres.
SAFETYTIPSFORPEDESTRIANS:
• Be visible – wear bright or reflective clothing, especially at night or in low-light conditions
Use designated crossings – always cross at pedestrian crossings, traffic lights, or pedestrian bridges, where available
• Stay alert – avoid distractions such as using your phone or wearing headphones while walking near traffic.
• Look both ways – always check
Padongelukke tydens vakansies
Suid-Afrika se padgeweld is elke jaar ’n nasionale bekommernis
for oncoming vehicles before stepping onto the road, even at marked crossings
• Follow traffic signals – wait for the green pedestrian light before crossing and ensure vehicles have stopped. Walk facing traffic – if there is no pavement or dedicated pedestrian area, always walk facing oncoming traffic.
SAFETYTIPSFORDRIVERS:
• Reduce speed in pedestrian areas – slow down in high-foottraffic zones such as schools, residential areas, and at crossings.
• Be extra cautious at night –
pedestrians can be harder to see in low-light conditions
• Yield to pedestrians – always stop for pedestrians at crossings and intersections
• Avoid distractions – put mobile devices away and stay focused on the road.
Check blind spots – be aware of pedestrians when making turns, reversing or pulling out of driveways.
• Never overtake at pedestrian crossings – if another vehicle has stopped for a pedestrian, do not overtake; someone may be crossing
“Our children, the elderly and pedestrians are among the most vulnerable on our roads,” added Allie “Ensuring their safety is a shared responsibility that requires vigilance from both drivers and pedestrians I urge all road users to be extra cautious, obey traffic laws, and look out for one another Together, we can prevent these tragic losses and make the Western Cape’s roads safer for everyone.”
The Overberg District Community Policing Forum election was held on Thursday 10 April in the Caledon Town Hall, following the election of community policing forums at station level.
It was reported that 14 of the 15 CPF chairpersons attended this important event facilitated by Fagrodien Johnson of the Western Cape Department of Community Safety (POCS) and observed by Sebastiaan Abrahams, the deputy chairperson of the Western Cape Provincial CPF Board, the acting Overberg District Commissioner Colonel Mbuyiseli Mtingani and Colonel Noluthando Mondi of the Overberg District Office.
Melvin Davids from Caledon was elected Overberg District CPF chairman with Pastor Enrico Adams from Swellendam as the deputy chairperson. June Maar-
man from Hermanus, a retired police colonel, was appointed as the treasurer, Ivan Boshoff from Napier as the Public Relations Officer, David Williams from Grabouw as head of projects and Sergeant Tembinkosi Gweyi from Caledon as the secretary.
The new chairperson, Melvin Davids, stated he aimed to lead with trust in the police while constructively holding them accountable. He added: “Let’s be supportive in our oversight role of the police and of the safety of the community and, hopefully, this way we can foster the best positive and productive relationships possible.”
Col Mtingani said: “I am looking forward to our partnership in creating a safe and secure environment for our communities.”

“Seniors het ’n spesiale plek in my hart.
For Samantha Gillion entering the Mrs South Africa 2025 competition is about much more than competing for a title; it is a mission of purpose, faith and empowerment, inspiring women and young girls.
The mother of two said she decided to enter the competition after much prayer and reflection because she believes in the values and pillars of the Mrs South Africa competition, namely self-development, community, networking and guiding married women towards becoming the best version of themselves; these align seamlessly with her life’s mission.
“My reason for entering is deeply rooted in love, for family and friends, for women who need to know their worth and, above all, my love for Christ, who has called me to this mission. Through this journey I pray to be a light, helping others find the same confidence, peace and love that has transformed my life.”
Gillion grew up in Hawston and lived in Johannesburg before moving back to the area where she met her husband
Ranvor. They have two children, RJ and Aimee, and they currently split their time between Gordon’s Bay during the week, for work, and weekends at home in Hawston
One thing about Gillion that stands out is her passion for uplifting young women. To this effect she co-founded Edify Her, a community project that offers workshops designed to “help young girls discover their worth, embrace their identity in Christ and walk boldly in confidence”
Faith, suffice to say, is a big driving force in Gillion’s life.
She explained: “As women we often struggle with self-worth and identity, but I believe that true confidence is rooted in faith. My heart beats for empowering others to discover their God-given identity and to live boldly in their purpose.”
This led her to write a book entitled Love Says “My book reflects my personal journey of discovering the unconditional love of Christ and how it transformed my life. Through this book I hope to share the life-changing power of God’s love with others, particularly young girls. Love Says is avail-
able on Amazon, and I dream of getting it into the hands of as many young girls as possible at no cost, so they can experience this transformative love for themselves and begin to see their own value and purpose in God’s eyes.”
Being a participant in the Mrs South Africa competition, for Gillion, is an opportunity to showcase the values she holds dear – faith, empowerment and service.
“The pillars of the Mrs SA competition – self-development, community, network and platform – align perfectly with my core values. Self-development is about growing in confidence and embracing our full potential, which is rooted in my journey with Christ.
“Community is close to my heart as I believe in supporting and uplifting others, particularly women and young girls, as we walk together in faith.
“Through our community project, Edify Her, I have the privilege of hosting workshops for young girls, helping them discover their worth in Christ and build unshakable confidence.

Altogether 4786 cheeses entered in the world’s most distinguished cheese-only competition and Klein River’s Oak Smoked Stanford, a semi-hard brushed rind Jersey cow’s milk cheese made in the traditional Alpine style, secured a much-coveted Super Gold award and also the Best South African Cheese. They also walked away with a bronze for their Overberg, an aged gouda-style cheese.
It’s still early in the year and Klein River Cheese has made again name for itself. This time during the South Africa Dairy Awards that was held on 8 April at Eengezind, outside Durbanville. Marine Coastal Conservation invites residents of the Overstrand to join them for a special clean-up operation in the New Harbour in Hermanus on Friday 25 April to celebrate International Penguin Day.
The African Penguin, the only penguin that breeds in Africa, is on the critically endangered list. A quarter of South Africa’s African breeding population is in the Overstrand, including the colonies of Stony Point near Betty’s Bay and Dyer Island near Gansbaai. Scientists have warned that the penguin spiecies could be extinct within the next 10 years if nothing is done to address their plight.

The inaugural Paddavlei Fun Run/ Walk was a resounding success with more than 100 participants showing up to walk or run along the 5km route that set off from and ended at the wetlands.
Long level stretches combined with some hills and beautiful scenery made for a route that suits all fitness levels with some preferring to run while others took it at a slower pace to enjoy the camaraderie and scenery.
ACDP ocuncillor Rugene Dees, who also participated in the walk, thanked the organisers for the “wonderful experience”.
She added: “The opportunity and the motive for organising the event and the positive value it adds to our dorpie is really amazing. It is indeed a great way to get people moving and enjoying the outdoors.
“The atmosphere was positive, with everyone being friendly and supportive as we walked or ran at our own pace. It was fantastic to be part of the historic first parkrun in Hawston and complete

the 5km and enjoy the sense of accomplishment!”
Dees also expressed the hope that the fun run will become a regular event.
The event was organised by the TSBirkenhead Sea Cadets in conjunction with the Paddavlei Eco Group and Whale Coast Conservation These three organisations have started rehabilitating the Paddavlei wetlands with the help of Overstrand Municipality in order to revatilise the neglected natural treasure.
EFFORTTO‘RESTORETOFORMERGLORY’
“Once a vibrant wetland surrounded by wild birds, ducks and flamingos, the area had sadly deteriorated over the years into an illegal dumping ground,” explained Noel Dreyer, commanding officer of the TS Birkenhead Sea Cadets
The cadets joined forces with the Paddavlei Eco Group, known as the Peggers, Whale Coast Conservation and the local municipality, who all share their drive and vision to restore the wetlands to its former glory
Together they started the arduous task of cleaning and laying out part of the fun
run route that runs beneath the canopy of milkwood trees along one side of the Paddavlei This stretch, that is known as the Paddavlei Footpath, stretches over 547 meters
“The idea was simple, yet powerful –to create a regular community fun run/ walk that would not only promote fitness and outdoor activities but also bring people of Hawston and surrounding Overstrand communities together,” Dreyer stated.
The reason for this, he explained, is to utilise the event to challenge and hopefully change negative perceptions about Hawston’s community, which is too often unfairly associated with gang activity and substance abuse.
“We want to show everyone that there are good, driven and community-minded individuals living here who are making a difference,” he added
According to Dreyer, the number of people who participated in the first fun run on Saturday 12 April, far exceeded their expectations. Now they plan to host another Paddavlei Fun Run/Walk event in May, and depending on the turn-out

He concluded by saying: “TS Birkenhead is proud to have played a significant role in this initiative – not just in the physical restoration of the site, but in fostering a sense of community pride and resilience Through our involvement we hope to continue showing young people that they can be agents of positive change and that their actions can uplift both their community and their future.” Visit the TS Birkenhead Sea Cadets and Whale Coast Conservation Facebook pages for more photos and updates on future events.
