Officers of the police’s K9 Overberg Unit assisted in a sting operation that led to the confiscation of three rhinoceros horns worth more than a quarter of a million rand and the arrest of three suspects.
Sgt Garth Gardiner and his protected-species sniffer dog Akira and Sgt Sonwabile Qhola of the police’s Overberg K9 Unit, based in Hermanus, in conjunction with the Overberg Stock Theft and Endangered Species unit based in Swellendam assisted the Hawks’ Bellville-based Economic Protected Resources (EPR) Unit in the operation that was carried out on the N2 near Buffeljagsrivier, Swellendam.
Lt Col Siyabulela Vukubi, the Hawks' provincial spokesperson, reported three suspects were arrested after Hawks members “purchased” three rhinoceros horns from the suspects. One of the suspects was arrested during the operation.
His two alleged accomplices were arrested a short while later after they

Capt Gideon Westrat, commander of the K9 Overberg Unit, congratulated his officers on the role they played in the arrest of the three suspects.
“This success once again emphasises the important role of sniffer dogs in the fight against crime, especially when it comes to the apprehension of suspects involved with the poaching of our country's natural resources.”
Col Mbuyiseli Mtingani, Acting Overberg District Commissioner, commended Gardiner and Qhola and the sniffer dog Akira for the success.
“This operation once again shows the importance of good partnerships. Without these partnerships we will not be as successful in the fight against crime,” Mtingani stated.
Three rhino horns to the value of R258 270 were recovered. The VW Polo the suspects travelled in was also confiscated.

Paying taxes is essential for any country’s functioning, funding everything from public services to infrastructure and social programs. But what happens when you’re unable to pay your tax debt to the South African Revenue Service (SARS)?
In such cases, taxpayers – whether individuals, companies, or trusts – can either apply for a deferred payment plan or seek a debt compromise agreement with SARS. A debt compromise allows taxpayers to request a reduction or settlement of their outstanding tax debt. SARS uses this method to recover the highest possible amount from the taxpayer, referred to as the debtor.
However, the process is far from simple.
Section 201 of the Tax Administration Act 28 of 2011 outlines the documents that must accompany a compromise request.
These include a detailed list of the Debtor’s assets and liabilities at fair market value, income and expenditure records for the 12 months prior to the request, details of any assets disposed of in the past three years and reasons for the compromise request and the inability to pay the tax debt.
SARS evaluates each application on its merits. However, compromise requests may be denied if, for example, the Debtor had a previous compromise agreement within
the past three years, if their tax affairs are not up to date or if the agreement would unfairly impact other creditors.
Navigating a tax compromise requires a clear understanding of the Act’s requirements and a complete, well-supported application.
Consulting a qualified tax adviser is highly recommended to increase the chances of a successful outcome.

Executive Mayor Archie Klaas launched a weekly clean-up campaign to encourage residents to take ownership of their own streets and nearby public spaces.
He proved how serious he was about this campaign by rolling his sleeves up and getting his hands dirty. Every Wednesday the Mayor leads by example by going into communities and helping clean-up garbage that has been dumped within residential areas.
He encourages residents across the Overstrand to join in this “Let’s Groove and Improve” clean-up campaign. “Start with the space around you. Clean your yard, pick up litter in your street and talk to your neighbours if you see them dropping a chip packet or cooldrink bottle. These small actions add up to something big: a cleaner, safer, and more welcoming Overstrand.
“This is about pride, pride in our environment, our towns and one another. When we take ownership of the spaces

we live in we begin to shape the future we want, street by street.”
A few weeks ago, during his Wednesday clean-up visit to Zwelihle, a
resident told the Mayor “We need a broom!”, to which he replied “You’ll get a broom!” It’s that spirit of shared responsibil -
ity and responsiveness that will start to fuel momentum in communities.
Recently, Klaas, along with his Mayoral Committee and the cleaning team, rolled up their sleeves to clean the area near the Beach Club in Hermanus. He also visited Gansbaai as part of the weekly clean-up campaign.
While the campaign is driven by positive action Klaas is also addressing the ongoing issue of illegal dumping.
“Dumping is not only ugly, it’s a sign that someone has stopped caring,” he declared. “But someone always sees who’s doing it. Often it is someone known to you. Talk to them. If necessary, report them to the Overstrand Municipal Law Enforcement on 028 313 8996. We cannot allow a few people to undo what we are trying to build.”
He emphasised one doesn’t need to join him in person, but one can clean up wherever one finds oneself.
He concluded: “If we want to grow our economy and create new opportunities, especially for unemployed residents, we must take pride in our environment and respect the towns we call home.”

“I don’t know what to do. Not yet. I haven’t decided yet.” So said a tired and still visibly shocked Zane Cupido after a fire gutted his shop on Sunday 29 June.
“Uncle Zane,” as he is affectionately referred to by everybody, has been a Caledon resident for 32 years.
His second-hand shop was a treasure trove where one could find anything from wood carvings to hand basins, tools, specialised machinery and much more. Cupido knew exactly what he had in the shop and could always assist people with what they needed.
Hermanus Times spoke to him on the Monday following the fire.
“I don’t have electricity in my house at the moment, so I cook my food on a wood-burning Dover stove in the backyard, which is between my house and the shop. I put the food on the stove to cook, and then just before one o’clock I went into the house to do my Salah (prayer). When I looked up from the room I saw there was fire and I
heard people calling to me to come out of the house.”
The fire brigade was on the scene and managed to extinguish the fire after a few hours and also prevented it from spreading to neighbouring buildings.
As a safety precaution the residents living above the mosque, which is next to Cupido’s shop, were evacuated and given the all-clear to return after the fire was extinguished.
“I am 80 years old and can’t begin all over again,” said a despondent Cupido. “Business

As if losing his shop, which was his livelihood, wasn’t bad enough, some thugs saw fit to enter his house at the back of the burning building and steal his cellphone, power bank and other personal belongings. “How can people do that? What kind of society are we living in?” he asked.
Nobody was injured in the fire. Cupido expressed his sincere gratitude to the fire department for their service.

Sy sê Austin was baie slaperig.
“As daar ’n avontuur is, wil ek graag deel daarvan wees.
Austin Diedericks is Sondagoggend oorlede.

The Biggest Deal Plus, a programme promoting and encouraging entrepreneurship among local youth, was established in 2014 as a Theewaterskloof municipal initiative in collaboration with the Small Enterprise Development Agency (SEDA), Standard Bank and, since 2024, the Klipheuwel Windfarm outside Caledon. (“Marrying youth, business” Hermanus Times 10 July 2024).
The young entrepreneurs receive six weeks’ training in all aspects of running a business, from putting a business plan together to financial and marketing aspects.
Recognising a need to strengthen post-programme support, the Klipheuwel Wind Farm has provided additional funding to ensure the top five participants in the 2024 programme received accredited business development training, which was delivered through Elgin Community College, starting in April 2025.
Nonini Makhothe, Economic Devel-
opment Specialist at Klipheuwel Wind Farm, said: “We believe that investing in skills enhances productivity and business resilience. Our support aims to help local businesses grow, create jobs and meet the needs of their communities without forcing people to seek opportunity elsewhere.”
A need for deeper training in business fundamentals, such as financial management, sales and marketing, was identified by the beneficiaries. These gaps have been key barriers to business sustainability and profitability. The specialised training aims to close these gaps and foster long-term success.
Stalin Govender, Senior Development Officer of the Theewaterskloof Municipality’s Local Economic Development Department, acknowledged the critical role played by local business partners.
“The Biggest Deal Plus programme is an essential platform for youth and small business development in our area,” he said. “Support from partners such as the Klipheuwel Wind Farm strengthens the initiative’s reach and impact, helping us build a more resilient local economy.”

Benefiting from a sector-specific skills development programme aimed at growing the country’s pool of young wind-turbine technicians, Bonga Kosani (33) of Riviersonderend recently graduated as a wind turbine technician.
He completed his training at Klipheuwel Wind Farm in Caledon following the two-month workplace experiential component of the programme. As a certified wind-turbine service technician he is now well-positioned to pursue a career in the rapidly growing wind energy sector, which has a strong demand for skilled technical professionals.
With a background in electrical work and hands-on experience as an assistant wind turbine technician, Kosani joined the programme with a clear career vision – to advance his skills, earn formal recognition and certification, and position himself to pursue new opportunities within the growing renewable energy sector.
Nonini Makhothe, Economic Development Specialist at Klipheuwel Wind Farm, said: “Alongside our various economic development projects, we are pleased to be able to help provide skills training opportunities, enabling access to the renewable energy workforce as well. Mr Kosani entered

the programme with practical knowledge and left with a formal qualification that now enables him to confidently compete for advanced roles in the industry.”
The comprehensive curriculum combined six months of theoretical and practical training with two months of workplace-based experience, which Kosani completed at Klipheuwel Wind Farm.
“It’s been a challenging and rewarding journey,” said Kosani. “I feel well-prepared to start contributing to the renewable energy industry. I am looking forward to getting out in the field, continuing to learn and being part of something that makes a real difference. I enjoyed my time at Klipheuwel Wind Farm. The technicians were amazing to work with. It was inspiring to learn from such experienced technicians.”
Klipheuwel Wind Farm specifically targets youth from surrounding communities, including Botrivier, Caledon, Grabouw, Genadendal, Tesselaarsdal, Riviersonderend and Villiersdorp for its technical training.
Having supported this programme for the last two years running, the 2025-’26 intake has confirmed three new trainees from the nearby communities – Nomabathu Siyasanga and Neoentle Maqetela, both from Caledon, and Nozuko Mjeje from Grabouw.

Overstrand Arts/Kunste (OAK) will present two brilliant young pianists in concert on Sunday 13 July in the Civic Auditorium in Hermanus.
Leo Gevisser’s music studies progressed under the tutelage of Professors Nina Schumann and Luis Magalhães – in which time he became a first-prize winner at several prestigious national music competitions in SA as well as in the USA. Based in New York City, the 22 year-old pianist and composer received his Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from the Juilliard School with academic honours in May 2024. He is a recipient of the first prize at the Miesczyslaw Munz Scholarship Competition at Juilliard.
Gerhard Joubert is a laureate of many national music competitions and in 2021 he received the first prize at the National Youth Music Competition after performing Liszt’s first piano concerto with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO) under the baton of Brandon Phillips in the final round.
In 2023, Gerhard received the first prize and a special award for the best performance of a classical sonata at the 7th Unisa
National Piano Competition. In 2021 he recorded the Schumann Piano Concerto with Bernhard Gueller conducting the CPO. The prestigious Human Naudé Music Scholarship was awarded to him in 2023.
These two talented young pianists will perform solo and duo works by Schoenberg, Bach, Fauré, Catlin Smith, Rameau, Franck, Van Wyk, Grieg, Debussy and Glass at Sunday’s concert.

Enzo has done it again!
Young Enzo van der Merwe has won double gold at the JKA National Championships, held in Johannesburg recently. The 10-year old, who has been doing karate since age 4, won gold for both kata and kumite. This was the second time the talented karateka from Hermanus has won double gold, earning him his South African colours. His proud dad Charl van der Merwe told Hermanus Times: “We are very proud of him and would like to thank his mentors and sensei Ronnie Knott at the JKA Dojo at Proactive Gym.” It is clear that a bright future awaits the young karateka. Well done to the to the coaches and mentors.
The Cape Town leg of the SPAR Women’s Challenge series, held in March this year, continued to boost the efforts of two NGOs fighting period poverty in the region.
The Boland Veteran’s Cricket Association's (BVCA) Dignity Project received a donation of SPAR Petals sanitary pads for the third year in a row, and this year Against Period Poverty (APP) also received a donation.
BVSA received R100 000 worth of sanitary pads, and APP received R30 000, plus two sanitary pad dispensers to the value of R75 000. BVCA, comprising mostly male players, are deeply committed to the development of women's cricket and the fundamental right of equal opportunities for girls.
On receiving the donation James Albanie, coordinator of the BVCA Dignity Project, said: “The impact of SPAR’s donations within the communities has been deeply moving. Along with assisting school attendance we also encourage and promote
a healthy lifestyle.”
BVCA volunteers delivered pads to the most vulnerable. “They were waiting,” James said. “The network is strong. Thank you for the trust.”
Against Period Poverty was founded by the formidable Lindsay Adams. It works to ensure adolescent girls do not miss out on an education due to a lack of menstrual hygiene products. Adams is passionate about breaking the stigma around menstruation, and believes that “to help even one girl is to restore dignity and opportunity”.
“A huge thank you for SPAR’s generous donation of Petals sanitary pads. With this donation we are able to distribute to more than 15 schools on the Cape Flats successfully.”
At the recent handover Elsabe van Zyl-Felix, advertising manager for SPAR Western Cape, thanked these two organisations for being part of the journey.
“Together we are running towards a brighter, more empowered future!”
Kontak Rodney Green by 067 268 8034 vir kaartjies.

Simamkele Damesi of the Overstrand Whale Boxing Club (OWBC) in Zwelihle returned home a hero after winning all his matches on the international stage to bring home gold, making coach Mzi Damesi's dream finally come true.
The 19-year-old’s excitement at beating his opponent from India 5-0 in the final of the International Boxing tournament, which took place from 20 to 22 June in the Seychelles, knew no bounds as he shouted for joy and jumped into the air.
OWBC founder Mzi beamed with pride as he reflected on his star boxer and nephew’s tremendous feat of being the only boxer from Team SA to win gold at the event in which boxers from seven countries – South Africa, Sey -
chelles, Mauritius, India, Sri Lanka, Réunion and Russia – competed.
“I felt extremely emotional as it has always been my dream that one of my boxers will win gold at an international event. I am super proud of Simamkele. He won his first match 5-0, the second 3-2 and the final 5-0.”
This was the second time Damesi represented the national boxing team and his club at an international boxing tournament, the first was when he won bronze in Angola in the 67 kg division earlier this year in May.
He follows in the footsteps of his older brother Siphamandla, who represented South Africa at the BRICS Games Boxing Tournament in Russia last year. Although he made his club proud by winning his first international fight in the quarter-finals against Daniil Titko, an experienced boxer from Belarus, Siphamandla had to bow out when he lost his next bout.
PROMISING STAR
Simamkele, who is currently the national champion in the 67 kg division, did not rest on his laurels after winning gold in Seychelles. Last week he competed in the South African National Boxing Organisation (Sanabo) National Men, Women, Youth and Elite Championship held in Pretoria where he won gold and was crowned the Best Elite Boxer in SA in his division, earning him another gold medal and a trophy.
He was the only OWBC boxer to compete in the national event.
“I believe he has a lot of potential and can make it very far in boxing. He is a very talented boxer, he has a strong left hook and his movements are fast and strong,” said Mzi.
“He is training very hard and he is being prepared to fight at the 2026 Commonwealth Games. But we need the communtiy's support to improve his chances even further.
“Simamkele needs training shoes,
tracksuits, sport bags, boxing gloves and the services of a dietician to advise him about the best food to eat to build up his strength. We also need the services of a doctor and physical therapist.”
REWARD FOR HARD WORK
With just his vision, tons of passion and nothing more than a boxing bag hung from a tree in somebody’s yard, Mzi started his boxing club more than 20 years ago in Zwelihle.
Since then OWBC has grown in leaps and bounds with the support of generous donors such as the EMS Foundation, which generously contributed to the construction and kitting out of the club’s state-of-the-art gym.
With the support of their donors and as result of the boxers’ hard work and dedication OWBC has produced a number of national boxing champions such as Simamkele, his brother Siphamandla, Akhule Mgoqi, Siyakholwa Nxanti and Sihle Mjongile.
Recently the club also received a generous donation from the Overstrand Municipality.
Overstrand Municipal Manager Dean O’Neill stated: “During June, Overstrand Municipality supported various Youth Month events, including arranging for the Executive Mayor, Archie Klaas, to hand boxing equipment to the Overstrand Whale Boxing Club (OWBC) at a special tournament on 21 June 2025.”
Mzi made use of the opportunity to introduce Western Cape Open Boxing president Sidney Ntantiso to Mayor Archie Klaas, Councillor Ronald Nutt, Mayco member for Community Services and Ayanda Stali, the municipality’s Sport Coordinator.
Mzi’s club continues to go from strength to strength with its young boxers proudly putting the club and the region’s name on the map.
Anyone who wishes to join the club or support it can contact Mzi on 082 621 5906.
