Fears of a repeat of 2018’s violent riots were assuaged after organisers of Monday’s marches in Hermanus and Gansbaai and leaders of various Overstrand communities reached an agreement with local government representatives after hours of intense negotiations on municipal rates and service delivery.
One of the most critical outcomes of the meetings is that Overstrand Municipality will launch “a thorough investigation” into residents’complaints about exorbitant municipal accounts and outstanding debts. An estimated 10 000 protesters brought Gansbaai to a standstill on Monday as they took to the streets to protest against high municipal tariffs, the implemen-
tation of the drip system and auxiliary charges on electricity purchases should a property owner’s municipal account be in arrears and the provision of adequate sanitation services. Approximately 1 000 protesters took to the streets of Hermanus on Monday to protest about similar issues. The crowds dispersed late in the afternoon after hours of negotiations between Land Party Leader in Chief Gcobani Ndzongana, community leaders, Local Government MEC Anton Bredell, Overstrand Executive Mayor Archie Klaas, Municipal Manager Dean O’Neill and other role-players. Ndzongana said in statement: “Land Party acknowledges and appreciates the Western Cape government’s decisive intervention in resolving the critical issue of excessive municipal bills
affecting Overstrand residents, specifically the communities of Masakhane, Blompark, Pearly Beach, Buffeljags, Mount Pleasant, Hawston, Zwelihle, Kleinmond and Betty’s Bay.”
He went on to thank the communities for uniting to bring their plight to light and to advocate for their rights. “Today’s demonstration further exemplifies the unified strength and diversity of Overstrand residents.”
Overstrand Municipality confirmed in a statement that an agreement was reached on addressing the issues of exorbitant water accounts, auxiliary charges on electricity, the need for more toilets and arrears on municipal accounts.
Overstrand Municipal Manager Dean O’Neill added: “Further matters discussed included the electrification of informal areas, assistance with indigent applica-

tions, and housing.”
The parties further came to agreement that a thorough investigation is required to understand the reasons behind high accounts, water restrictions and outstanding debts.
“The findings will be considered by Council for future action, as there is growing dissatisfaction among residents about the high cost of municipal services,” said O’Neill.
“In view of the above it was agreed no auxiliary charges will be levied on electricity sales and that any interest charged on arrears will be suspended with immediate effect.
“This will remain in place until council has considered the outcome of the investigations and any possible policy changes to assist in addressing these issues.
“Our teams will start in Masakhane immediately, with
the other areas in Gansbaai to follow, before moving on to those in Hermanus and finishing off in the Kleinmond/Betty’s Bay area.”
He, however, urged residents to continue paying their municipal accounts during this period.
Overstrand Executive Mayor Klaas expressed his gratitude that the protests remained peaceful and, apart from the inconvenience caused, no violence occurred.
“It is hoped that the outcome of the investigations, along with the decisions to be taken by Council, will address the issue of unaffordable services and improve customer satisfaction.”
The Mayor and organisers of the protest expressed their gratitude to Minister Bredell “for his willingness and availability to support stable local government.”
Building a second dwelling on your property can provide significant income, whether through a bed and breakfast, guest house, or rental. However, it’s essential to navigate various legal and compliance requirements before proceeding.
In South Africa, establishing a second dwelling involves understanding local zoning regulations, which dictate what types of developments are permitted. If your property is zoned for single dwellings, you may need to apply for rezoning or subdivision. Additionally, any new construction must comply with the National Building Regulations and the Building Standards Act, which requires municipalities to approve plans that meet safety and aesthetic standards. It’s crucial to check your title deed for any restrictive conditions, such as limits on the number of buildings allowed. These conditions can override municipal approvals, meaning you cannot proceed with construction even if the local council grants permission. Removing such restrictions can be costly and time-consuming. Beyond approvals, consider health and
safety regulations as well as implications for municipal services like water and electricity, which may require separate metering and incur additional costs.
Lastly, review your homeowner’s insurance to ensure coverage for the new structure and consider additional liability insurance if operating a guest accommodation. Visit our website: www.vorsteyn.co.za for more on this subject or make an obligation free appointment with us at 028 313 0033.

Explore the future of transportation at the comprehensive Electrical Vehicle (EV) showcase held in Hermanus this weekend. The grounds of Hermanus High will be transformed into an electrical vehicle “theme park” this Saturday (9 August) from 09:00-16:00, giving residents and visitors the rare opportunity to view various electrical modes of transportation from kick-scooters to commercial vehicles and the latest luxury cars. The best part is that entry to this showcase is absolutely free to the public.
Visitors will get hands-on access to an impressive lineup including premium Audi and BMW electric vehicles, innovative BYD models, stylish MINI electrics, sophisticated Volvo EVs, the fully electric Riddara RD6 double-cab from Geely, powerful Energica superbikes and practical VMoto motorcycles and mopeds.
Justus Visagie, from EVnow.co.za, says Tesla fans will find plenty to explore, including the manufacturer’s distinctive “winged” Model X, Tesla Powerwall batteries, and EV charging stations. Other highlights include a converted (classic) VW Beetle, a Roam motorcycle that completed an impressive solar-powered journey from Nairobi to Stellenbosch, and a robotics exhibition from Stellenbosch University.
For those interested in urban-mobility solutions, electric kick-scooters from retailers GoElectric and iRoll will demonstrate how EVs are revolutionising short-distance transport. Mercedes-Benz and DFSK will showcase their EV models for businesses transitioning to cleaner fleet solutions that can save money too. Various commercial charging solutions from ZIMI as well as solar energy systems from Whale Coast Solar and Renenergy will be showcased.
The event will culminate in a special ceremony where Overstrand Executive Mayor Archie Klaas will present a GoElectric NIO
electric kick scooter to the winning learner from EVnow’s myth-busting competition, recognising young South Africans leading the charge toward sustainable transport education.
“This breaks barriers by bringing electric vehicles directly to the community,” said Visagie. “People can touch, explore and understand these vehicles without any sales pressure; it’s pure education and discovery. We want to get people excited about EVs so they’ll demand an end to the additional 7% import duty on these vehicles. Also, instead of sending billions to oil producers we should keep that money in South Africa to help our people and economy prosper.”
Families are encouraged to attend this unique opportunity to experience South Africa’s electric vehicle future first-hand.
Drivers of battery-electric vehicles may park inside the school grounds, subject to available space.

Applications open this week for non-profit organisations seeking community support.
The Lighthouse 2 Lighthouse Ladies are preparing to distribute their remarkable 2026 fundraising success, with applications for funding set to open on Wednesday for eligible charitable organisations across the Overstrand Municipal District.
The walking group’s dedicated efforts throughout 2025 raised an impressive R700 000, the primary beneficiary being Huis Lettie Theron. The organisation also demonstrated its commitment to supporting multiple causes by donating R20 000 each to runners-up Kleinmond Animal Welfare (KAWS) and Birkenhead Animal Rescue Centre (BARC) plus an additional R10 000 to 1-Life Rescue in recognition of its invaluable services during the fundraising walks.
Since its establishment in 2006, Lighthouse 2 Lighthouse ladies has become a cornerstone of charitable fundraising in the Overstrand. The passionate group of walking enthusiasts has raised more than R6 million to support various charitable organisations throughout the district, addressing critical community needs across nearly two decades.
Organisations interested in applying for funding can access the necessary documentation at www.lighthouse2lighthouse. co.za/charities or contact Jennie Vorster at l2lbeneficiaryliaison@gmail.com.
The application consists of three essential components:
• Part A: Invitation to apply for funding;
• Part B: Standard applicant information, including SARS documentation and proof
of NPO/PBO registration;
• Part C: Detailed beneficiary proposal for funding.
The applications will remain open from Wednesday 6 August until the closing date 3 September. Applicants must specify their funding-project requirements and provide comprehensive project details, ensuring proposals are realistic and viable for completion within one year of receiving funds.
A unique requirement this year includes the submission of a two-minute video appeal directed at both the Lighthouse 2 Lighthouse Ladies and the broader Overstrand community. The video should showcase the organisation's work and explain how the funding will benefit their specific target community.
L2L will also host a voluntary online briefing session on Wednesday 13 August at 17:00. This session will clarify essential elements of the application documents and provide guidance on completing the forms effectively. The briefing link will be distributed to all interested charitable organisations with meeting details available on the organisation's website.
Any registered Non-Profit Organization (NPO) or Public Benefit Organisation (PBO) operating within the Overstrand Municipal District is eligible to apply. Applications must clearly identify target beneficiaries, community impact and demonstrate how the proposed project will serve local needs.
Jennie Vorster, Beneficiary Liaison for Lighthouse 2 Lighthouse Ladies, emphasised the importance of community support in amplifying their fundraising efforts.
On this year’s Mandela Day, as South Africa reflected on the enduring call to combat poverty and inequality, CapeNature demonstrated that environmental conservation and human development are not just compatible; they are inseparable.
Against a backdrop of rolling mountains and coastal splendour, 475 new Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) participants embarked on a journey that promises to change not only their own lives but the very landscape they’re sworn to protect.
These cohorts, based at Kogelberg and Stony Point Nature Reserve, were welcomed at an event hosted at Kogelberg and led by Western Cape Minister of Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning Anton Bredell.
CapeNature is providing EPWP participants with training, mentorship and hands-on experience in key areas, including invasive-species management, wildfire response, biodiversity monitoring and eco-tourism across its provincial nature reserves.
The programme supports the inclusion of women, youth and people with disabilities, aligning with national targets for vulnerable groups. Between 2022 and 2025, 1 366 participants were employed through the programme.
“Instead of a one-year contract we offer a three-year contract,” said Bredell. “During this time there will be opportunities for training, and you will have the opportunity to explore your particular interests in conservation, tourism or working with our many neighbours and stakeholder communities.
“People who participated in the CapeNature EPWP have made huge strides in their personal development. Some managed to complete their schooling while others secured permanent employment.”
Thabiso Mokoena joined the EPWP after completing a diploma and began as an Environmental Education Officer.
“That role equipped me with the skills to engage stakeholders, a strength that’s been instrumental throughout my career,” he said.
Mokoena has since progressed through several permanent roles at CapeNature, including Field Ranger, and is now the SMME Development Specialist.
“The skills, experience and mentorship I received through EPWP shaped my path and growth.”
Sakumzi Woyikani is currently in his second EPWP cycle and works as a frontof-house assistant at Kogelberg. “I was fresh out of school and looking for work
to gain experience,” he said. “EPWP not only creates opportunities for young people, but also helps alleviate poverty by allowing us to earn an income and support our families.” Woyikani said the programme had helped him build a reliable network and develop valuable skills in areas such as financial management and customer service.
Lwando Baleni began his journey in the programme as a conservation student at Walker Bay Nature Reserve in fulfilment of his Nature Conservation Diploma. Afterwards he worked as a Pupil Landscape Support Officer at De Hoop Nature Reserve and ultimately secured employment with CapeNature partner Dyer Island Conservation Trust as a Marine Seabird Ranger.
“The programme gave me a holistic view of conservation. Exposure to a range of different fields ensured I had a set of skills that is unique to me. I began as a student and have developed into a passionate conservationist focused on the critically-endangered African Penguin.”
Jonathan Jasson started as an admin assistant before becoming a Tourism Liaison Officer.
“The EPWP gave me the skills, confidence and exposure I needed to grow professionally and support my family. From my start as an Admin Assistant in 2020 to my current role as a Tourism Liaison Officer at Goukamma Nature Reserve, the journey has been one of growth, resilience and purpose.
“I’m grateful to CapeNature and the EPWP for opening the door to meaningful opportunities in conservation and community upliftment.”
Residents of Hermanus can once again look forward to the St Peter’s Anglican church bells ringing promptly at noon to announce the midday hour.
The sound of the bells which, actually, are electronic chimes and not a brass bell as in the old days, have been silent for a number of years as the equipment was faulty.
But now, with a generous donation from the family of a parishioner who died recently, John Mitchell of Soundworks Hermanus managed to repair the mechanism, restoring the age-old tradition of the bells sounding at noon.
The beautiful sound was heard for the first time in years on Wednesday 23 July after Mitchell, an experienced sound engineer, fine-tuned the chimes back to their former splendour.
The church management thanked the family for their generous donation and Mitchell for his dedication to ensuring the return of this much-loved daily
A respected Overstrand figure known for developing national boxing champions and worthy participants in international tournaments has a side that doesn't receive as much attention – a kind heart that is also drawn to assisting those less able to negotiate for themselves.
What few people know about coach and trainer Mzi Damesi, aside from his sterling work developing boxing talent, is that he often goes about Zwelihle ensuring its animals are also looked after.
He spends most of his time ensuring members of his Overstrand Whale Boxing Club (OWBC), situated in Schulphoek Road, Sandbaai, are in peak fighting form, but on Sundays, his only off-day, he goes into the area to give the dogs and cats water and food.
At first Damesi used his own meagre income to buy the food, but with financial assistance from the Elizabeth Margaret Steyn (EMS) Foundation (which has invested in the boxing club enabling it
go from strength to strength) he is able to help a much larger number of cats and dogs in the area that would otherwise have survived mainly on scraps.
“Since 2019 the club has received funding from the EMS Foundation. It also started helping me with donations to buy dog food.”
But Damesi doesn’t just feed dogs and cats often found roaming the streets; he also educates their owners in caring for their pets properly.
“If people need food for their dogs or cats they can contact me or come to the gym, next door to the Waldorf School. All I ask is that they care for their pets and don’t abuse or neglect them."
To ensure the welfare of more of Zwelihle’s dogs and cats Mzi has called on the community to donate warm blankets or towels, dog and cat food, treats and kennels. These can be dropped off at OWBC or Damesi can be contacted on 082 621 5906 or at overstrandboxing@gmail.com.

This very distinctive stone building, erected in 1889, is one of Hermanus’ oldest buildings and a well-known landmark of the town.
St Peter’s has services every Saturday and Sunday at 09:30.
For 71-year-old Grace Julius June 2025 marked a turning point in her life. After two years of living in darkness she was one of 20 patients from the Overberg region to receive a long-awaited cataract surgery at Eerste River Hospital's Eye Clinic, a day she describes as nothing short of a miracle.
The Rotary Club of Hermanus, in partnership with the Hermanus Provincial Hospital's Eye Clinic, is continuing its support of the Ferdi Marais Community Vision Project, an initiative inspired by the late Rotarian Ferdi Marais, to provide accessible health care to the local community.
"The cataract surgeries for our 20 patients from vulnerable areas in the Overberg were made possible through a collaborative initiative and partnership supported by the Radiance Foundation and the Rotary Club of Hermanus, with infrastructural support provided by Gift of the Givers, which funded the renovation of the Ophthalmology Clinic at Eerste River Hospital.
"This eye clinic has been transformed into a state-of-theart facility equipped to deliver advanced ophthalmic care.
"This was more than a surgery; it was the gift of life. My left eye went blind 40 years ago, and two years ago the right one also went blind. I have been
depending on others to assist me since my husband passed away 40 years ago." Grace said she now enjoyed doing things independently.
"Now I can cook and clean for myself. I am very happy and thank everyone who assisted in getting me the surgery."
Patients were warmly welcomed by hospital staff and treated to a day filled with care and community spirit. From home-made meals to lovingly handcrafted blankets donated by women from the Eerste River community, the atmosphere was one of deep compassion and celebration.
"The love and attention we received made us feel like family," Grace said, "and the kindness of the hospital staff and volunteers reminded us that we were not forgotten."
Years ago the late Ferdi had a dream, and this vision, accessible eye care for all, played a big role in many residents lives. The project focuses on three key areas:
• Reading-glasses distribution: 194 pairs of reading glasses have been provided to individuals with mild visual impairments, enhancing their quality of life.
• Cataract surgery support: Since July 2024 the Rotary Club has funded 80 cataract surgeries at a cost of R210 000, helping reduce the local surgical backlog.
• Community eye-screening days, with active participation from Rotarians, aim to identify
vision problems early and connect patients with appropriate care.
"This project reflects Rotary's commitment to practical, lasting service," said Denis Brandjes, president of the Rotary Club of Hermanus. "We're proud to continue Ferdi's vision for accessible eye care."
Dr Johanna Fourie of the Eye Clinic added: "This partnership is a great example of how local collaboration can lead to meaningful, long-term improvements in community health."
The Rotary Club of Hermanus remains dedicated to supporting healthcare initiatives that make a tangible difference across the region.

My hart is vol en my beker loop oor.
Food connoisseurs and those who simply enjoy a delectable and beautifully-presented meal are in for a special treat at the annual Clash of the Chefs competition during which eight of Hermanus’ finest chefs will show their culinary talents off.
Patrons of this annual fundraiser are in for a treat with a multi-course lunch prepared by chefs Bridget Bartleman of Kolossal Hospitality, Johan Lamprecht of Brood bakery in Onrus, Zee Smith of B's Steakhouse in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, Grey Masina of Char'd Grill and Wine Bar, Percy Chidakwa of Pear Tree, Nathan Bikani of Milk on the Beach in Onrus, Clive Biggs of Birkenhead House and Christo Hatting of Benguela Cove. The delectable meal will be paired with some of the best wines from the area.
The Clash of the Chefs is an annual fundraising event that has raised R1,6 million in aid of local organisations since its inception. This year’s event is in aid of Hermanus Animal Welfare Society (HAWS).
Each chef brings their own special flavour to the event.
Chef Bridget Bartleman has more than 20 years’ culinary experience. She established Kolossal Hospitality in 2018, offering bespoke private chef services and catering for weddings, events and retreats. For her food is about more than just providing
nourishment; its also about “storytelling, heritage, and unforgettable experiences.”
Bartleman is passionate about indigenous ingredients, sustainable sourcing and cooking over an open fire.
Chef Clive Biggs, Head Chef at Birkenhead House, on the other hand, specialises in South African cuisine with Asian and European fusion. His cooking is also inspired by his love for the ocean and surfing, bringing bold, coastal flavours to the table. Biggs, who has been in the field for 30 years, said: “I cook with heart, heritage, and a touch of adventure.”
Simingaye Junior Masina, known as Chef Grey, started his culinary journey many years ago, cooking with his great-grandmother on Sundays. He completed his training at Hospitality Training & Associates, headed by Stephen Bellingham, a renowned chef and mentor who hand-picked him for the Lecturer’s Award. He completed his internship at Restaurante Zambi and Nom in Mozambique, and has also worked at some leading hotels, including Michelangelo Hotel.
“I’d like to believe with the opportunity given by Chef Petri I’ve found a place that allows my creativity to grow and shine as my personality.”
For Chef Zee Smith the kitchen is her happy place, a space for learning, teaching and plenty of laughter. She believes in letting
quality ingredients shine, creating dishes that bring comfort and connection. Her culinary journey began more than 20 years ago at B’s Steakhouse, where she has perfected the art of the great steak and cultivated her love for baking, good wine and genuine hospitality.
Nathan Bikani is proud to be the Sous Chef at Milk on the Beach in Onrus and enjoys serving up “fine cuisine with simple fresh ingredients”.
He has worked abroad in the Middle East under an Irish celebrity Michelin Star chef.
“I love being a chef. Most people don’t understand that being a chef is not just about passion but a lifestyle.”
Christo Hatting, Head Chef at Benguela Cove, started his culinary journey 25 years ago and has worked in some well-known restaurants, including The Test Kitchen, La Colombe and The Greenhouse restaurant at the Cellars Hohenhort. He was a partner in three restaurants in Cape Town and a fourth one in Paarl.
He has a great love for German, Scottish and South African cuisine and says his style of food is bistro/comfort food with the emphasis on an easy and relaxed dining experience for the guests.
Chef Percy Chidakwa, head chef at Pear Tree in Hermanus, started at Bella Napoli in Onrus and later moved on to open a restaurant called Cafe 1904 with the owners.
He started at Pear Tree in 2018 and steadily worked his way up to head chef of this busy bistro. This vibey young, yet experienced chef, never stops learning and always pushes the boundaries.
Chef Johan Lamprecht, owner of Brood artisinal bakery in Onrus, is a seasoned culinary professional whose passion for cooking was ignited in his grandmother’s kitchen. After completing a formal culinary apprenticeship he honed his skills in top-rated restaurants and managed kitchens in various 5-star hotels and lodges. Lamprecht also does bespoke catering and offers his services as private chef in the Overberg region.
For him cooking is not just about creating delicious food, but also fostering connections and creating memorable experiences, for he believes food has the power to bring people together, evoke emotions and tell stories.
To test their wits and creativity further the chefs will also have to compete in a Mystery Basket cook-off.
Well-known local restaurateur Chef Shane Sauvage, owner of the iconic La Pentola restaurant, will act as MC.
Clash of the Chefs Hermanus starts at 11:30 on Saturday 16 August at the Hermanus Golf Club. Tickets cost R750 each and includes the meal and a welcome drink.

The Overberg region witnessed an exciting display of grassroots rugby talent as Build it Kleinmond and Build it Grabouw recently hosted the Lions Cubs Tournament featuring five local primary schools.
The tournament brought players from Curro Hermanus, Kleinmond Primary, Grabouw Primary, Gansbaai Primary School and Mount Pleasant Primary School together in a celebration of sport, dedication and healthy lifestyle choices.
The initiative, developed in partnership with Shaun Haman and Curro Hermanus, aimed “to create an opportunity for foundation-phase boys to get more exposure to the game of rugby, but also to celebrate their dedication to a healthy hobby,” the tournament organisers explained.
“We hope to continue this tournament on a yearly basis and keep the conversation on making good choices in our communities going.”
The tournament format ensured maximum participation and learning opportunities, with 10 matches played per age group across three categories.
This resulted in an impressive 30 matches completed in a single day, allowing every player to develop their skills within a regulated game environment.
The structure enabled young players to
learn progressively throughout the day while building confidence on the field alongside their teammates. The day produced several thrilling outcomes across the three age divisions.
In a remarkable upset, the u-7 Kleinmond Primary claimed victory against Curro Hermanus. The achievement was particularly impressive considering the Kleinmond team was formed just three weeks prior to the tournament.
In the u-8 championship Curro Hermanus emerged victorious after a fierce battle with Mount Pleasant Primary earning well-deserved recognition as runners-up following an intense final round.
Curro Hermanus secured their second title of the day in a nail-biting final for the u-9s against Kleinmond Primary, showcasing the competitive spirit and skill development across all participating schools.
“The tournament represents more than just competitive sport,” according to the organisers, “it embodies a community-driven effort to promote positive youth development and healthy lifestyle choices in the region.
“We expressed our commitment to making this an annual event, recognising the importance of providing ongoing opportunities for young athletes to develop their passion for rugby while building character and community connections.”
Two BMX riders from the Overberg BMX Club took part in the 2025 UCI BMX Racing World Championships held at the UCI Bike City of Copenhagen, Denmark from 28 to 31 July.
Rickus Muller and Ingrid Youell were well prepared for this event in the challenge and master categories, and according to Rickus it was an honour to represent South Africa on the BMX track again. This is not the first time Rickus participated in a world championship. He also participated in the world championship in Scotland in 2023, but according to him it remains an honour to represent not just South Africa but also the Overberg.
The Copenhagen BMX Club’s home track, which previously hosted the UCI World Championships for BMX Racing in 2011 and multiple rounds of the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup from 2008 to 2010, has undergone significant modernisation to prepare for the UCI BMX Racing World Championships.
According to the organisers among the most notable improvements are new starting ramps and the installation of a cutting-edge ProGate starting system on the 5 m challenge starting ramp. “This ad-
vanced technology ensures precise and fair race starts, meeting the highest international competition standards.”
The track’s transformation reflects the dramatic evolution of BMX racing technology. With continuous innovation in bicycle design today’s riders are competing at significantly higher speeds than they were during the track’s previous World Championship hosting in 2011. “The sport has evolved tremendously,” the organisers noted, explaining the need for comprehensive safety and performance upgrades.
To accommodate these increased speeds, engineers have completely rebuilt and heightened the track’s corners. Fresh asphalt has been applied throughout the corner sections, designed to enhance riders’ cornering ability while providing an optimal riding surface that meets modern safety standards.
The renovation project will culminate with a complete renewal of the entire track surface specifically for the UCI BMX Racing World Championships. The upgrades position Copenhagen’s track as a model for how classic BMX venues can adapt to meet the demands of modern high-speed racing while maintaining their competitive legacy.
