Writer of many religious articles, head of SABC religious broadcasts and wellknown figure in the Overstrand, Rev Sandy Gilfillan died on 25 August at the age of 101 at the Helen Keller Home in Pinelands.
Gilfillan was a longtime resident of Hemanus, at one stage pastor of the United church and later the one in Stanford.
On 12 June 2024 Hermanus Times published an article about the remarkable man who meant so much to so many (“Reverend turns 100”, Hermanus Times, 12 June 2024).
He turned 100 on 30 May 2024 and celebrated at Hermanus’ Windsor Hotel, with wife Magriet and a few family members.
Gilfillan moved to the town with his late wife Mary in 1991 when he became minister there, serving until 1996. He served in Stanford until 2007, when Mary’s ill-health forced him to retire reluctantly.
Although no longer living in Hermanus, Gilfillan visited often, as his second wife Magriet (whom he married in 2011) was in care at the frail care centre Sofca.
His funeral will take place on 13 September at the Helen Keller Home in Pinelands.
Chamber is making strides
Although the Hawston Local Business Chamber was established as a NPC little more than a year ago in June 2024, it has made big strides and are actively involved in community development projects.
The organisation, with Kolie Nel as chairperson, currently has 16 members who all own businesses in the area.
Its aim, said the board, is to be a leading voice for businesses and to foster innovation, opportunity for growth and strengthen partnerships between stakeholders within the local business sphere.
“The chamber believes that decisions made without collective understanding of their long-term impact on the community are detrimental,” it stated.
To further its aim of addressing limited business development in the area, the chamber hosted a community-training programme in May, which focused on financial guidance for business growth.
It actively participates in any developmental programme or project that aligns with their objectives.
Last December it hosted a Christmas
carols event in December, at which 72 gift packs were donated to elderly residents.
Earlier this year the chamber combined with other stakeholders to contribute lunch packs for 450 learners at a big sports event.
The organisation is also involved with other stakeholders from the community to arrange a special Heritage Day celebration.
Hawston Local Business Chamber also plans to surprise one sports club with a donation later this year to promote sports development.
“Currently, we have 16 members, but we strive to motivate all businesses in Hawston and Fisherhaven to join the Hawston Local Business Chamber to become involved in their own development and make a positive contribution to the community.”
The membership fee is R100 per month, which is used for administrative purposes and donations to various programmes.
For any enquiries on the chamber and its activities, or for assistance, call 082 362 0192 or send an email to vpgillion@gmail.com.

Taxi boss murder suspect makes bid for freedom
Bianca du Plessis
The only suspect to have been arrested so far in connection with the murder of well-known taxi-fleet owner Julia Alam remains behind bars as his bail application continues in the Hermanus Magistrates’ Court.
To date, Ntandazo Sipele and the investigating officer Sgt Thembelani Mekuto of the provincial Serious and Violent Crimes Unit have testified in Sipele’s bail application.
Sipele, who was arrested in the Cape Metropole on Friday 8 August, first appeared in connection with Alam’s murder in the Hermanus Magistrates’ Court on Monday 11 August.
This was also the day a taxi driver from Zwelihle was gunned down in the area. Sources say it is believed this taxi driver allegedly drove the getaway vehicle in which the three gunmen responsible for Alam’s death on Thursday 7 August in the parking lot of Whale Coast Mall, fled from the scene.
“He was taken out to silence him,” one source stated.
Last week, taxis in Hermanus were seen driving in convoy through the town to pay respects to their slain colleague before his body was transported to the Eastern Cape for burial.
Hours later the investigating officer resumed his testimony in Sipele’s bail application in court.
Mekuto echoed the state’s sentiment that Sipele shouldn’t be released on bail as he is a flight risk and added that one witness in the case had already been gunned down while another person who indicated he would be willing to be a state witness was shot and killed in Cape Town.
The three gunmen responsible for Alam’s shooting in broad daylight have still not been apprehended.
Alam’s husband, Jeffrey Zolile Alam, was killed in a similar manner six months before when he was gunned down while sitting at the Zwelihle Taxi Rank at the end of February.
Simon Nodom, with Alam when he was shot, was gunned down the following evening in Zwelihle.
The latest murders are believed to have been part of a string of shooting incidents in recent weeks related to violence in the taxi industry.
Just last week the Somerset West
Taxi Rank was closed after two taxi drivers, believed to be affiliated to the taxi association Cata, were shot dead in Macassar.
Western Cape Premier Alan Winde condemned the taxi-related violence, which has claimed numerous lives over the past few weeks. He called for calm and a return to negotiations that will bring about lasting stability.
“Nothing can justify bloodshed. It is only through dialogue that differences and challenges can be overcome.”
Western Cape Mobility MEC Isaac Sileku pointed out that taxi organisations committed to prioritising peace, stability and the safety of commuters during a recent Taxi Peace Summit.
“The current escalation of tensions between Cata and Codeta, the two largest taxi groupings in this province, and the violence that followed, shows that some in the industry are acting in bad faith and undermining the commitments they made to government and to the people of the Western Cape. This violence is nothing less than an attack on innocent commuters, and those who choose conflict over peace will face the full force of the law,” Sileku stated.
On 28 August the Western Cape High Court granted the Western Cape Mobility Department an urgent interdict to implement measures in response to the ongoing mini-bus taxi-related violence. The interim interdict is aimed at protecting commuters, operators and the public. It will remain in force until 9 October, when the court will decide whether to make it permanent.
“This court order gives us the legal authority to act decisively to protect our communities and restore stability in the affected areas,” said Sileku. “Every commuter has the right to travel without fear, and we will work closely with law-enforcement agencies to ensure full compliance.”
Premier Alan Winde added: “We welcome this urgent interdict. While it was an act of last resort it is an important step towards stabilising the current situation. But more critically, we urge these taxi associations to return to negotiations to engage meaningfully and find a lasting solution.
“They must always put their commuters’ interests first. This is non-negotiable.”
Consistency is key for HOA
As communal living becomes more popular the importance of consistent rule enforcement by Homeowners Associations (HOAs) is crucial.
HOAs are tasked with applying regulations that maintain the quality and safety of the community, while ensuring fairness in penalties for noncompliance.
A recent case, *Reddy and Another v Cedar Lakes Homeowners Association*, highlights this issue. A trust-owned property in Cedar Lakes Estate, Johannesburg sought approval for a garage door with a mirror finish. The HOA denied this request, despite allowing similar installations in the community.
Initially, the Community Schemes Ombud Service ruled against the trust, ordering the
K’kraal in teiken
• ’n Onmiddellike opskorting van alle inperkings- en uitsettingsakises;
removal of the door. However, on appeal, the High Court found that the HOA had acted inconsistently and unreasonably. The court emphasised that the ombud did not adequately consider evidence of inconsistent approvals by the HOA.
This case serves as a warning to HOAs to adhere to their rules consistently and fairly. By following standardised procedures they can foster transparency and trust within the community, essential for maintaining order in communal living environments. Chelsea comes to Stanford
Chelsea flowers will bloom again in Stanford from 10 to 24 September, when Leon Kluge, the creative mastermind behind the South African team that won the gold medal at the RHS Chelsea Royal Flower Show for the second consecutive year, visits Stanford, where a replica of his and Tristan Woudberg’s display will be recreated and showcased.
As part of the event the genius will also visit farms, selecting the flowers to open at the specific time.
Winning this prestigious honour is not something everyone can achieve. It takes months of planning. According to team members 25 000 flowers were transported in a temperature-controlled refrigerated container a week before the exhibition.
The same effort the team put into winning gold at Chelsea will be used to showcase the masterpiece to South Africans. The Kluge-Woudberg display can be seen at the Stanford in Bloom Festival, which takes place from 10-24 September.
This special event would not have taken place without support from the Grootbos Foundation. The flower show, this time, will also contain a selection of botanical artworks from the Grootbos Florilegium.
This unique collection of botanical illustrations by local and international artists, depicts the rare, endangered and charismatic plants found in the Grootbos Private Nature Reserve and surrounding regions. What makes the artworks especially distinctive is the inclusion of insects, pollinators and other creatures associated with specific plants.
The collection pays homage to the environment’s greater ecology, with art an expression of the deep commitment to research and conservation that Grootbos has.

Meer oor kanola . . .
Mitzi Buys
A navy dream is true
Bianca du Plessis
Joining the South African Navy is a dream come true for Robbie Hansen from Hawston, who has climbed the ranks from being a new entry to officer in the TS Birkenhead Sea Cadets, all within a space of four years.
The TS Birkenhead Cadets’ motto “Never give up! Never surrender!” is what inspired him never to accept defeat despite a few setbacks in his efforts in applying to the Navy. Hansen’s perseverance and dedication finally paid off when he left to start Joint Basic Military Training (JBMT) in Kimberley two weeks ago.
Hansen’s journey started in Grade 6 when he joined the cadets. He left after two years but rejoined in January 2022, at age 15. He was pleasantly surprised by the more structured organisation and the introduction of ranks. Hansen was introduced to skills such as drilling and navy-related flag names, ranks and terminology. He was also issued his first uniform with strict instructions to wash and iron it neatly.
After three months Hansen passed his new entry exam with a score of 99%. Then followed the camp at the TS Woltemade base. “I learnt a lot. It was tough but we had to stay strong.”
He said his time with the TS Birkenhead Cadets exposed him
to new experiences. “I travelled to places I had never thought I’d ever go to, enjoyed numerous camps and had some of the best times of my life. I also attended the navy festival in Gordon’s Bay where I had the opportunity to drill with real R5s.”
One of the highlights that set the course of his future was a camp in Saldanha in 2023, when Hansen got his first taste of life in the SA Navy.
After matric he made several attempts to join the Navy. “In total the Navy should have five applications from me. When I eventually received a call on 13 May to report to 9 SAI BN for medicals I was excited. Then I waited yet again. When I received an SMS to report to 3 SAI BN in Kimberley I almost burst with joy. I couldn’t believe it!”
Hansen thanked his officer commanding, Lieutenant Noël
Dreyer, a former member of the Navy, for the countless ways in which he assisted him. He said: “Without my OC I couldn’t have done it. There was a time when I thought they had forgotten about me, but he told me my time will come. Now I’m on my way to Kimberley.”
An obviously-proud Dreyer said having one of TS Birkenhead’s senior cadets successfully pass the Diver Selection and be accepted into the South African Navy “highlights the importance and impact of the programme in developing disciplined, motivated and successful young people.
“However, to continue unlocking the potential of our cadets and to reach even more youth within our communities, it has become critical for TS Birkenhead to establish a permanent base of our own,” he added.

The sounds of children’s excited laughter, shouts and cheering filled the air at the Zwelihle Sports Field when 231 young learners of Lukhanyo Primary School took part in the quarterly Fun Day hosted by final-year Occupational Therapy (OT) students from Stellenbosch University.
The occupational-therapy students Lindelwe Kubheka and Stacey Koopman, who are currently completing their community-interaction practical at this school, used their skills and creativity to organise a programme for the Grade 2 learners that combined laughter, learning and lots of movement.
The Fun Day, said the students, is designed to promote gross motor development, visual-motor coordination, and social interaction. They added: “The event turned purposeful play into a powerful tool for growth. Each station featured carefully selected activities designed to target key areas of development, including coordination, balance, and whole-body movements.”
Learners enthusiastically took part in engaging tasks such as the spoon-and-rock race, balancing beanbags while walking on a rope, dribbling soccer balls, sack racing and tossing beanbags into hula hoops. A standout favourite was the newest addition to the programme; tyre pushing, which had learners using strength and teamwork while building their gross motor skills through running, jumping, throwing, and balancing. The Learner Council and remedial class assisted with the different activities.
The school principal, Morris Tshabalala, also joined in on the excitement, taking photos with the various classes and showing his support for the initiative. The learners sang and danced and cheered their peers on at the different stations. The learners also enjoyed watch-

The school’s learner council members assisted with keeping score at each of the stations to determine the winners of a 50-slice cake. All the participants received a goodie bag at the end of the event and the class that ended with the second-highest score also received packets of popcorn.
Kubheka and Koopman thanked the school’s sport coaches, the principal and their supervising occupational therapist for their assistance in ensuring the success of the event and to all the sponsors – Round Table for the apples, Gateway Spar for the cake, BUCO for the paper bags and gazebo, Yorke Cash and Carry for the lucky packets, sweets, drinks and other catering supplies, and Hi-Q for the cash donation and tyres.
The next fun day is planned for the Grade 3 learners. To get involved, assist or contribute contact Annetta Saaiman on 072 118 5683 or Morris Tshabalala on 028 312 1552.
Hermanus High buzzed with anticipation on 20 August as nine courageous young speakers took to the stage for the school's annual Public Speaking Competition, delivering thought-provoking addresses that showcased the diverse perspectives and passionate voices of today’s youth.
The prestigious event drew an audience of 600 Grade 10-12 learners, who were treated to an afternoon of engaging oratory covering topics as varied as plastic surgery, the destructive power of gossip, the courage to embrace being “uncool”, and heartfelt reflections on the final years of high school life. Adding gravitas to the occasion was a distinguished panel of adjudicators, comprising Adrian Louw, a respected local attorney, Elnora Gillion, Deputy Executive Mayor of the Overstrand, and Ryno Viljoen, CEO of FinGlobal. Their combined expertise ensured a rigorous and fair evaluation process, with each judge providing valuable feedback to help develop the speakers' skills. The range of topics chosen by the participants reflected the
concerns of Generation Z, from societal pressures around appearance and social media to more philosophical reflections on identity and belonging.
The diversity of subjects demonstrated the depth of thinking among Hermanus High’s student body and their willingness to tackle complex, sometimes controversial issues.
“Each speaker demonstrated remarkable courage, insight and passion,” noted the event organisers, teachers Dayne Nel and Dané Pretorius, who praised all participants for their preparation and bravery in addressing such a substantial audience.
After careful deliberation, the judges announced their results: Jurgens Kotzé (winner), Lwandle Thekwane (second place) and Johan de Villiers (third place)
The competition not only celebrated individual achievement but also highlighted the school’s commitment to developing confident, articulate young leaders who can express their ideas with clarity and conviction.

BMX Points Series event
The Overberg BMX Club is gearing up to host one of the most anticipated events on the Western Cape BMX calendar, as the provincial points series 6 and 9 of the BMX Western Cape converge on their home track this Sunday 7 September.
The double-header event promises to deliver high-octane racing action as riders from across the province descend on the Hermanus facility to compete for crucial championship points in what has become one of the most competitive seasons in recent memory. “We’re absolutely thrilled to be hosting such a significant event,” said George Kloppers chairman of the Overberg BMX Club. “Our track has been in excellent condition this season, and we’re expecting some of the province’s top talent to put on a spectacular show for our local community.”
The Provincial Points Series serves as the primary qualification pathway for riders seeking to compete at national level competitions, making each round crucial for ambitious racers. With two rounds being contested in a single day, riders will have double the opportunity to accumulate points toward their provincial standings. The event will cater to riders across all age categories.
BMX enthusiasts agree that this sport is truly a sport for everyone. “We’ll see everyone from three-year-olds on balance bikes to seasoned veterans still competing at the highest level. It’s this diversity that makes BMX such a special sport.”
Registration opens at 08:00 on Sunday and practise is between 09:00-10:00. The racing starts at 10:20. Spectator entry is free, and ample parking will be available at the venue. For riders still looking to participate, enter online. Online entries close on 4 September and payment can be made to Western Cape Cycling Association. It was tough and tight, but the Hermanus Yacht Club has been crowned as the worthy winner of the Lipton Challenge Cup 2025.
According to experts the Lipton Challenge Cup contest has never gone the full distance of 10 races, “yet Hermanus Yacht Club (HYC) has emerged as worthy winner of the contest by simply sailing consistently well in every single one of these 10 races”.
The Lipton Challenge Cup boasts a long history. It was donated in 1909 to the Table Bay Yacht Club, nowadays known as the Royal Cape Yacht Club (RCYC), by Sir Thomas Lipton, world-famous entrepreneur and five-time challenger for the America’s Cup. And according to their website this annual inter-club contest – one boat per club – is held off-shore during the months of July and August. The long history of the Lipton Challenge in many ways reflects the history of competitive sailing in South Africa, and today the Cup is widely seen as the domestic trophy most SA sailors, young and old, would most like to win.
And this year the honour went to HYC as Jacqui Low (commodore), Calvin Gibbs (helmsman/skipper), Markus Progli (co-skipper), James Rae, Scarlet Cilliers and Owen Middleton (reserve) showed nerves of steel as they emerged victorious. It was also the first time Hermanus had

walked away with the glory.
It was quite a nail-biting battle where any one of the four clubs – Hermanus, the RCYC, the Royal Natal Yacht Club (RNYC) and Saldanha Bay Yacht Club – could have emerged victorious at the end of the day.
On Saturday (the last day) the racing was intense as mathematically any one of the four clubs was in contention, and each of those teams had a strategy worked out in their minds as exactly what they needed to do to win.
The RCYC team blasted out of the start-
line and led from start to finish. This fine victory was not enough as the Hermanus team was next to finish – and with that second spot was able to lift the Lipton Cup in victory. What makes the Hermanus team so remarkable is the presence of two youth sailors for whom this was their debut Lipton Cup and whom, as they emerge as victors, will be pinching themselves for a reality check for a long time to come. The debutants were James Rae and Scarlet Cilliers, both still at school.
