Driver denies involvement in the fatal mall shooting Suspect in Alam murder in court

The man charged with wellknown taxi owner and businesswoman Julia Alam’s murder denied he was involved in the shooting and being in Hermanus at the time of the fatal incident in the parking lot of the Whale Coast Mall on Thursday 7 August.

Following the 39-year-old’s murder, which shocked the Hermanus community, detectives with the Provincial Serious and Violent Crimes Unit led the investigation that saw a number of suspects taken in for questioning. Only one was charged with the shooting, which the police stated was related to ongoing taxi-violence.

Ntandazo Sipele (37) was arrested in the Cape Metropole on Friday 8 August and detained at Lentegeur Police Station. He took to the stand last week to testify in his own bail application. The state, however, opposed his bail application, arguing Sipele was a flight risk and may interfere with witnesses, defeating the ends of justice.

Sipele, from Brown’s Farm, Philippi, admitted during questioning a firearm had been found in his possession, but told the

court it was licensed and both the licence and firearm were still in the police’s possession along with the Toyota Hilux he was travelling in.

Sipele was reportedly in Hermanus on the day of the fatal shooting in broad daylight along with three other men. He, however, claims he only gave them a lift from Strand to Hermanus, and did not know their names, contact numbers or where they lived.

On their arrival in Hermanus, he said, they met up with a man named Thulani and bought some food and liquor at Whale Coast Mall before going to Zwelihle where they consumed it. Sipele

Her murder came nearly six months after her husband, Jeffrey Zolile Alam, was gunned down in broad daylight at the Zwelihle Taxi Rank in February.

Simon Nodom, who was with Alam when he was gunned down, was shot and killed the following night. Shortly after her husband’s murder Alam told Times they had moved away from the township the previous year due to fears for their safety after it had become known that both their names were on a hit list.

Sipele’s bail application proceedings were postponed to Monday when the investigating officer was scheduled to testify. The outcome of the bail application was not yet known at the time of going to print.

The man accused of the taxi fleet owner Julia Alam’s murder is in the process of applying for bail in the Hermanus Magistrates’ Court.

ODM firefighters get new equipment

In a significant step towards enhancing disaster-response and firefighting capabilities at local level, the Western Cape Government officially handed firefighting vehicles, essential equipment and a financial grant over to the Overberg District Municipality (ODM).

The handover that took place at the Bredasdorp Fire Station forms part of the Provincial Government’s ongoing commitment to supporting municipalities in fulfilling their constitutional mandate of disaster risk reduction, fire prevention, and emergency response.

In his keynote address the Western Cape MEC for Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, Anton Bredell, emphasised the importance of building local resilience. “This handover is more than the transfer of assets,” he pointed out, “it’s an investment in the safety, security and well-being of communities across the district. This support ensures our district municipalities are adequately equipped and resourced to protect lives, livelihoods, and infrastructure.”

ODM Executive Mayor Sakkie Franken, accepting the equipment on behalf of the municipality, expressed deep appreciation to the province for the support. “This donation is timely and will go a long way in enhancing our operational readiness. With these additional vehicles

and gear, our teams will be able to cover a wider area, respond faster, and serve our communities more efficiently.”

The new equipment includes two water tankers and two bakkies, portable firefighting equipment, protective gear for fire fighting personnel, communication and operational tools and a financial grant allocation.

The new vehicles and equipment will be deployed strategically across the district’s fire stations, while the grant will be used to support operational readiness,

maintenance of firefighting assets, skills development, and fuel and logistical costs associated with fire and rescue operations.

The move also aligns with the municipality’s broader Disaster Risk Management Strategy, which includes public-education campaigns, firebreak construction and increased training for volunteer firefighters.

ODM Municipal Manager Richard Bosman said this partnership underscores the shared responsibility that

exists among different spheres of government in delivering critical services and ensuring the safety of all residents. Continuous collaboration between provincial and local government is anticipated to include further resource allocations in future budget cycles. Bosman added: “This strategic intervention will significantly bolster the district’s ability to respond effectively to fires and emergencies across its jurisdiction, particularly in rural and remote areas.”

Councillor’s killer gets 15 years

Fifteen years for stabbing a man to death. This was the sentence imposed on Bulelani Qombole, recently convicted for Councillor Simphiwe Silo’s murder in February 2023. His co-accused, Thanduxolo “Tasco” Gontse, walked out of court a free man after Qombole confessed to the murder.

Silo’s widow, Iviwe said her heart ached at hearing the news that the man who killed her husband would serve only 15 years behind bars.

“I was in court and my heart just broke. But I can’t blame them. The one who was sentenced confessed he did it and the other (his co-accused) said in his testimony he did not stab my husband.

“I don’t know how I feel about the sentence. I am very conflicted; I don't feel happy or sad because nothing will ever bring my husband back. Tasco’s family is happy because he is free, but I will never get to see my husband again. I will never hear his voice or touch him ever again.”

Qombole and Gontse were arrested on Monday 6 February 2023, hours after Silo succumbed to his single stab wound sustained in an argument with the accused as he was on his way to home. The wounded young Overstrand councillor managed to reach his home in Zwelihle, but died before he could receive medical attention.

Members of the Provincial Serious and Violent Crimes Unit managed to apprehend Gontse and Qombole hours later and recovered the murder weapon. Iviwe had nothing but praise for the unit and thanked its officers for the speedy arrests.

She also thanked Councillor Michelle

Sector 2 of the Hermanus police station will host a community meeting/imbizo on Wednesday 27 August at the Zwelihle Community Hall in Lusiba Street. Residents from Zwelihle, Sandbaai, Sand-

Sapepa for standing by her since the murder.

“She supported me through everything. If she weren’t there for me, always checking up on me, I just don't know...”

Sapepa said Silo had been like a son to her and described his death as “a huge loss for the community of Zwelihle”.

She added: “He fought for the community and was also involved in the peace talks in the 2018 riots.”

She said the trial and the time since Silo’s murder had exacted a heavy toll on his widow.

“Every time we went to court it was as if it had just occurred. The worst day for Iviwe was when she had to take the stand to testify. After the accused was sentenced she sent me a message to say it had just kicked in that her husband was truly gone. It was heartbreaking.

“As much as I am not happy to think one can receive a sentence of 15 years for killing someone and come out on parole after serving only a part of it, we are grateful that someone was at least convicted and sentenced. Nothing will ever bring Koko, as I called him, back.”

Iviwe said although the trial and sentence had brought a small measure of closure she was still struggling to come to terms with her loss.

“I am not okay. My life has not been the same since the day he died. Now my house is silent. I miss his support, his voice, everything about him."

The sentencing, she said, signalled the close of a very stressful chapter, one of attending court and wondering about the outcome.

“Now,I am closing the chapter of my life with my husband totally. I have to start a new life without him. Just me..."

ADVERTORIAL

Landowners, be fire-wise!

The potential causes and/or aggravations of veldfires range from dry grasslands, vegetation, extremely warm temperatures, strong winds, lightning and thunder, untrained firefighters, and human culpability such as dropping lit cigare e bu s, leaving open fires una ended or lighting open fires on days that are high-risk for veldfires.

The primary objective of the National Veld and Forest Fire Act 101 of 1998 (“National Veldfire Act”) is to prevent and combat veld, forest and mountain fires throughout the country. Various sections in this Act place obligations on landowners aimed at combating and mitigating damages relating to veld and forest fires.

Compliance also goes a long way in reducing liability and/or negligence for damage claims in veldfires. Some of the main obligations of landowners that will assist in combating veldfires and mitigating damage and liability in veldfire claims:

• The formation and registration of fire protection associations;

• Joining existing fire protection associations in the region where your property is located;

• Complying with tasks and/or responsibilities established by fire protection associations

• Preparing and maintaining firebreaks following the National Veldfire Act and/or the Fire Protection Association guidelines;

• Paying a ention to relevant fire danger ratings and acting accordingly;

• Avoiding the lighting of open fires and/or burning firebreaks when the fire-danger rating is high;

• Being present when firebreaks are burnt and/or appointing agents to be present;

• Having the necessary equipment, protective clothing and trained personnel for fighting veldfires;

• As landowner ensure that, if not present, a properly appointed agent is in place to take responsibility for fire safety;

• Take reasonable steps to notify fire protection associations and/or officers as well as adjoining or neighbouring landowners;

• Doing proper firefighting and mop-up operations;

• Entering any land on which a fire may start and/or from which a fire may spread, together with another person, to extinguish the fire;

• Reducing fuel loads and invasion of alien vegetation;

• Doing everything necessary to prevent the start and/or spread of veldfires.

The above obligations may include additional obligations relevant to the specific circumstances of landowners in different areas.

Although some veldfires cannot be entirely avoided, the above obligations will assist with mitigating damages and ultimately the liability and/or contributory negligence of landowners.

Rotary women lead

Rotary International, once a male-only organisation, reached an historic milestone in 2022 when Jennifer Jones of Canada became the first female Rotary International president, followed by Stephanie Urchick in 2024.

In 1989, Sylvia Whitlock of California challenged the organisation’s constitution, leading to a landmark decision that welcomed women into Rotary. She famously said, “Rotary is not just about service; it’s about courage, inclusion and the power of one voice to change the world.”

The first woman club president in Africa was Eubeth Beyers from Kleinmond. Later Sherry Justus became president of the Hermanus club (2004-’05). She was followed by Ann Wright (2018-’19), who also became the club’s first district governor in 2023-’24. Jenny Howard was the third woman president (2022-’23) with Natalie Scholtz in the role in 2024-’25.

Today, women make up 45% of District 9350’s membership.

To mark Women’s Month, six past district governors and the current governor of District 9350 gathered to reflect on their journeys and the power of women supporting women. They remain actively involved in club and district initiatives, mentoring others and driving change. Among them is PDG June Webber of Waterfront Rotary, the first female district governor across 47 sub-Saharan countries during Rotary’s centennial year,

2004-’05. She led the impactful “Kick Polio Out of Africa” campaign, sending a soccer ball signed by Archbishop Desmond Tutu through 24 countries ahead of the 2010 World Cup.

Shân Biesman-Simon, a multitasking trailblazer, balanced a full-time career, Rotary leadership and family during her 2010–’11 term. Her successor, the late Geraldine Nicol of Newlands Rotary (2015-’16), spearheaded a R5,8 million project in Langa that included teacher training and sanitation improvements.

Lynette Stassen, a professional engineer and 2017-’18 governor, described Rotary as the most rewarding part of her life. She added: “It’s the best gift you can give yourself as a woman.”

Governor Tracey Wilson (2022-’23) secured a US$25 000 (R439 089) Rotary International Disaster Grant for Ukraine, enabling District 9350 to send 500 first-aid kits and 120 power

banks through Rotary’s global network.

“Words may inspire, but action creates change,” she said.

Ann Wright of Hermanus, the 2023-’24 Governor, stated: “I joined Rotary to connect with changemakers who share my values.” Ann played a key role in hosting an Inter-Country Committee Peace Conference in Cape Town, which culminated in the opening of a Rotary Peace Garden at Century City.

The current governor for 2025’26, Pamela Rawbone of Bellville Rotary, brings her passion for youth development and organisational excellence. “During my visits to our 59 clubs located in Angola, Namibia and the western half of South Africa I will be encouraging women to take up senior roles in Rotary.”

Wright pointed out: “Leadership is not about being in charge, it’s about creating space for others to thrive.”

St Francis fêtes women

Inspirational women from Rooi Els, Pringle Bay, Betty’s Bay and Kleinmond gathered at the Anglican chapel of St Francis of Assisi in Betty’s Bay recently in celebration of Women’s Day.

Organiser Jessica Batts, with fellow women parishioners, reached out to neighbouring denominations and organisations to join the celebrations.

With the chapel adorned with fynbos and tea table covered with delicacies hostesses Hermien van Zyl, Paulette Marinus, Michelle Barry, Diane Nurse and Jowenen le Cordeur ensured the 88 women from the local area and beyond who attended, enjoyed the special event celebrating the importance of friendship in womanhood.

The morning started with a warm welcome by Jessica Batts, followed by a scripture reading by Bernadette Lange and prayer and grace by Stella Watson. Janet Meyer took the audience down memory lane, reflecting on the past 40 years since her parents had initiated the idea of an own church, which today is a reality.

Guest speaker Dr Michele

Serfontein, co-owner of the Ocean Basket franchise in Hermanus, shared her experiences of her family exchanging their corporate and academic life in Johannesburg for the hospitality industry in the bustling seaside town Hermanus. She encouraged the women present to embrace and live their God-given purpose every day and trade on their “talents and gifts”. The morning was concluded with a poem read by Jenni Gous, which was adapted from Proverbs 31:10-31.

The event, said Batts, also served as a fundraiser for much-needed improvements in and around the church. Lucky draws added extra fun and enjoyment to the event.

Batts expressed pleasure at the overwhelming response and support from local communities and organisations.

She also thanked the various sponsors of the event, and particularly the lucky draw. The big prize, a spa voucher worth R1500 from Arabella Hotel and Spa was awarded to Caroline McPherson, named the best-dressed woman.

Tannie Maureen ’n volle eeu oud

Ek lees baie graag. My seun bring gereeld vir my tydskrifte en ek hou ook van Louis L’Amour se cowboy-boeke. Ek sê vir

die Vader elke dag dankie vir my twee seuns,” sê tannie Maureen.

Op ’n vraag waaraan sy haar lang lewe toeskryf, antwoord tannie Maureen: “Jy’s nie alleen nie. Ander mense kry swaarder as jy. Ek is gesond en eet alles wat op my bord is, maar ek is veral lief vir groente en vrugte. My ma was ’n baie vasberade en kragtige vrou en ek dink ek het baie van haar eienskappe oorgeneem.”

Oor herwinning voel tannie Maureen baie sterk. “Jy gooi nie sommer ’n ding weg nie.

Salute all women and heritage

Put on your traditional wear and head to the Zwelihle Sports Field this weekend for a fun-filled, weekend-long event celebrating women and our proud heritage.

The theme of the event, said Pakama Qwalana Madlamini, one of the event organisers, is “Breaking Bread, Breaking Silence” and aims to raise awareness of domestic and gender-based violence (GBV), empower women and the youth through dialogue, education and cultural engagement and to promote community health, safety and active lifestyles through demonstrations and educational activities.

“The aim is to end Women’s Month with a special celebration,” she said. “As we go into September, which is Heritage Month, we also want to celebrate our African heritage through indigenous food, sports, music and art.”

The event will be held from 11:00 to 15:00 on Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 August at the Zwelihle Sports Field in Lusiba Street and entry to the event is free.

The programme is packed with both informative and fun events, including talks and demonstrations by various organisations, performances by local musicians, dancers and poets and stalls selling indigenous food such as tripe, pap and veggies, dombolo (traditional steamed bread), chicken feet, koeksisters and boerewors rolls.

Saturday’s programme includes keynote speeches by GBV ambassadors and community leaders as well as GBV survivors who will share their tales of survival.

Various organisations will also be on hand to share information about help available for victims of domestic and gender-based violence.

Those attending the event can also look forward to performances by local artists, poets, dancers and musicians. The event also caters for the younger ones, offering interactive demonstrations by Overstrand firefighters and the Overstrand Law Enforcement Dog Unit.

Sunday’s programme will focus more on sport and fun, with netball, soccer and athletics for young and old. There will also be community engagement and informal networking sessions, cultural exhibits and food stalls.

“We aim to create a safe, empowering, and inspiring space for women, youth and the community at large,” Pakama stated. Contact Pakama on 073 735 4553 for more information or to book a stall.

The King Price Race to the Sea isn’t just another race to tick off on your calendar. It is a journey where determination matters more than speed, and getting to the finish takes more than strong legs. It’s the kind of race you talk about long after the dust settles.

This is a gravel race at heart with approximately 70% of the route stretching over gravel and 30% on tar, taking cyclists along rolling farm roads, rocky jeep tracks and stretches of smooth tarmac.

Participants can choose between the 100 Miler that sets off from the Huguenot Monument in Franschhoek and ends at Benguela Cove Wine Estate or the 50 Miler that starts at Wolwekraal, which is the halfway point of the 100 Miler race, and also ends at Benguela Cove.

The challenging though exhilirating route will test riders’ grit and endurance. Cyclists entering the 100miler need to be 19 years or older while the 50-miler is open to riders who are 16 years and older.

100-miler tour to sea

The 100-miler stretches over 157 km with a total elevation of 2 391m from the heart of Franschhoek to the finish line a few kilometres outside Hermanus.

The 7 km ascent up the Franschhoek Pass, said organisers, is the biggest single climb of the day at 736 m, and it sets the tone for what’s to come.

“It’s not the last climb of the day, but it’s the one that reminds you you’re in for a ride.”

Along the route there are seven fully-stocked water points offering cold refreshments, wholesome snacks to provide much-needed energy boosts and banter to lighten your spirit and keep you going.

The 50-miler stretches over 82 km with 1 444 m of elevation gain. Organisers describe the event as a test of endurance, adding: “This is a journey. A challenge. A celebration of gravel, endurance, and the human spirit. It’s the chance to ride across one of the most beautiful regions in the country, powered by passion, surrounded by fellow adventurers, and carried by the simple joy of forward motion.”
