Inligting oor mans gesoek
‘Pasop vir aanlyn skelms!’
T Wuta

Man knifed during burglary on farm
Rasaad Adams
Franschhoek police are on the hunt for three men involved in a house robbery on a farm in Main Road, Franschhoek in the early hours on Saturday (31 May) in which one of the house occupants was stabbed in the leg.
The three men, armed with knives, broke into a farm cottage and accosted two guests around 01:30, said Franschhoek police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Frederick Rossouw
According to Rossouw an adult male
guest was stabbed in the leg by one of the suspects.
All three suspects’ faces were reportedly covered
“It is believed that the male victim was stabbed during a scuffle between himself and the intruders. According to the complainants they were tied up and only managed to free themselves almost an hour after the intruders left the property.
“They then managed to alert police and security,” Rossouw explained.
He said the male guest was treated for the stab wound on the scene by medical personnel.
Police also assisted him with a fol-

low-up visit at a medical facility in Paarl the following day, Rossouw said Several items, mostly electronics were stolen. The keys of the male guests’ vehicle were later discovered under one of the beds
“Police tried following the suspects’ tracks on Saturday morning. After 4-5 km we lost the spoor and had to give up the chase.
“Since the victims only managed to free themselves an our later and alert police, this gave the suspects more than enough time to disappear,” Rossouw added.
Upon closer investigation police fur-
ther discovered that two other cottages on the farm were also broken into. These cottages were, fortunately, not occupied for the weekend. Rossouw said police responded to a robbery incident on the same property in early 2020. He urged those in the hospitality sector to ensure that proper security measures are place to protect the safety and well-being of guests Franchhoek police registered a house robbery case following the incident. All three suspects are still at large and police are asking anyone with information to come forward.
Tips to help children be safe
Today (Thursday 5 June)
may be the last official day of Child Protection Week but Stellenbosch police are clear that child safety is a 365 day effort.
Local police are sharing the following tips with parents, guardians and the larger community
Personal safety: Use proper names for body parts as this helps children communicate clearly if something untoward happens like bullying or abuse Explain “safe” versus “unsafe” touches, and teach children that their bodies belong to them and they have the right to say “no” when they are uncomfortable Private parts are private –explain that certain areas are private and should not be touched by others except for hygiene or medical reasons, and only with permission
to online
Know their environment: Monitor adults in your child’s life Make sure you know who spends time with them, like their teachers, coaches, neighbours, and so forth Avoid isolated situations were your child may be one-on-one with adults and encourage group settings whenever possible Visit and inspect locations before sending your child for playdates, sleepovers or camps
Emergency preparedness: Teach your child their full name, address and phone number Have a family password, a code word that must be used by anyone picking them up unexpectedly Practice what to do if they get lost and help them identify safe adults like police officers and store clerks who can help them
Online safety: Supervise your child’s internet use Use parental controls and keep electronic devices in common areas where you can keep an eye on them Discuss online dangers by teaching them about cyberbullying, online predators and that they should never share personal information Set clear rules about what they can do, where they can go and who they can talk
Encourage open communication: Create a safe space and let your child know they can talk to you about anything Listen without judgment, believe them and remain calm if they share something concerning Regularly check-in by asking about their day, feelings and any unusual behaviour they noticed
Be sure to do your part to help children in the community be safe.

Winter is here and so are the viruses that lead to colds and flu.
“Flu may seem like a seasonal inconvenience, but for those at higher risk, such as seniors, young children and people with chronic conditions, it can be life-threatening. A flu shot is one small action that offers powerful protection,” said Neil Mentoor, pharmacist at Cloetesville Community Day Centre.
The 2025 influenza season began earlier than usual, starting in week 13 (beginning Monday 24 March), when flu detections in hospitalised patients exceeded the seasonal threshold.
“This early onset serves as a timely reminder that now is the right time to get vaccinated and help protect yourself and your community,” said Charlene Lawrence, deputy director of Communicable Diseases Control at the provincial Department of Health and Wellness.
The department procured

The unveiling of a permanent installation honouring the late science teacher Walter Parry at the Old Lückhoff School in Stellenbosch on Thursday 22 May marked a milestone in Stellenbosch University’s (SU) ongoing journey of restitution and transformative social impact
It took place in a building steeped in history Once the heart of Die Vlakte – a vibrant, predominantly coloured neighbourhood in central Stellenbosch – the school building was given to SU a few years after the close-knit community was uprooted by apartheid’s Group Areas Act and relocated to areas such as Cloetesville and Ida's Valley
In 2007 the building was symbolically rededicated to its original community under rector and vice-chancellor, the late Prof Russel Botman and, in 2019, it became the site of a ceremonial return of school benches under his successor, Prof Wim de Villiers This launched the Lückhoff Living Museum, which is becoming a space for memory, healing and dialogue, an initiative that continues under SU’s current rector, Prof Deresh Ramjugernath
The unveiling brought members of the Parry family, school alumni, community members and SU representatives together to reflect on the life and legacy of a remarkable educator
The installation is the latest in a series of steps by SU to honour Parry Last year the inaugural annual Walter Parry Memorial Lecture was held – also on his birthday –and in January this year SU named a new student residence Walter Parry House
LAYEREDTRIBUTE
The concept of creating a space of memory at the old school was proposed by the late Otto van Noie, a former Lückhoff learner, teacher and community activist Renée Hector-Kannemeyer, deputy director of SU’s Centre for the Advancement of Social Impact and Transformation, helped develop this into a proposal approved by SU’s Social Impact Funding Committee
“We wanted to honour Parry not just as a scientist, but also as a man, father and teacher, someone who lived with integrity and served his community in a time of deep hostility and injustice,” Hector-Kannemeyer said
The three-panel installation consists of a biographical overview of Parry, an artist’s illustration of him and scenes from the inaugural lecture It was designed by Monique Biscombe, a PhD candidate in Visual Arts at SU and daughter of the late Stellenbosch author and activist Hilton Biscombe, with input from the Lückhoff Alumni Association and the Parry family
WHOWASWALTERPARRY?
Born in District Six in 1913, Walter Hazell Parry was a gifted scholar who completed his MSc in Physics cum laude at the University of Cape Town in 1934
Despite his academic brilliance discriminatory policies denied him the chance to pursue a doctorate or a formal academic career He became a maths teacher and taught at Lückhoff High until his death in 1966
“Teachers at the school taught by him when they were learners remember him for always being well-prepared for lessons,” Chris Jooste, current principal of Lückhoff, said The school still exists in Ida’s Valley Parry’s passion for science reached beyond the classroom He quietly assisted SU staff and students, often tutoring behind closed doors and collaborating with physicists, including then-head of department Prof Piet Zeeman, on early experimental projects linked to the Southern Universities Nuclear Institute (now iThemba LABS) The injustices he was subjected to left their mark “Apartheid hurt Walter and all of us,” Wilfred Daniels, deputy
in
grandson of the late
at
chairperson of Lückhoff Alumni, said “He was sometimes frustrated and unhappy, but remained committed to teaching ”
FAMILY,COMMUNITYREFLECTIONS
Parry’s daughter, Elizabeth Vergotine (82), remembered the warmth of their home, a house full of books He and his wife, Winifred, had eight children, five of whom became teachers “As long as there are children to teach, there must be teachers,” she recalled her father saying She was moved to see the university not only honouring her father but transforming itself “At the first lecture I was pleasantly surprised; there were so many academics and students who would not have been there in the past It made me so happy SU is making a real effort so children from Stellenbosch do not have to go elsewhere ”
Her son Benito, a presenter on Smile FM, expressed similar appreciation: “This wonderful tribute and honour bestowed on my grandfather means a great deal to our family ”
Calvyn Gilfellan, CEO of the Castle Control Board in Cape Town and a member of the strategic body of Lückhoff Visual Redress as Restitution, said: “I wish the spirit you have here can be transplanted in all our communities ”
RESTITUTIONINPRACTICE
The installation is a tangible expression of SU’s restitution statement, adopted in 2018 when the SU marked its centenary In the words of Prof Nico Koopman, deputy vice-chancellor of Social Impact, Transformation and Personnel: “Restitution includes contrition, confession and conversion But it must also lead to reparation, reconciliation and rejoicing It must be joyful, hopeful work ”
The old school building hosts a range of community-based organisations and educational activities, and plans are underway to hand the building over to a community trust
“This is not just about the building, but bringing back what was lost – holistic education, spiritual restoration and a space for healing the body, mind and soul,” Hector-Kannemeyer explained
THEFUTUREOFMATHEMATICS
The ceremony did not just look back – it also looked forward Fittingly, mathematics and science education featured prominently in the programme, linking Parry’s passion to the current state of learning
Prof Benita Nel, a Lückhoff alumna and director of the Science Learning Centre for Africa at UWC, spoke about Parry's impact and the need to reinvest in mathematics in South African schools
“There are learners with the brilliance of a Walter Parry who today cannot take maths because their schools no longer offer it,” she warned “That has serious implications for the future ”
The ceremony concluded with the lighting of a candle by Parry’s granddaughter, Portia Brown “Parry ignited that light in us, and now we must keep it burning,”
Daniels noted

Big leap for MiDO Academy
The MiDO Academy in Jamestown has officially received accreditation by the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO) as a national Skills Development Provider (SDP).
This recognition enables the academy, which is committed to supporting youth development and cybersecurity readiness across South Africa, to offer the Occupational Certificate: Cybersecurity Analyst (NQF Level 5, 173 Credits) It is a first-of-itskind programme on the national framework designed to combat SA’s cybersecurity-skills shortage
The accreditation is not just a win for MiDO, but also a significant leap forward for the South African cybersecurity ecosystem “This accreditation is a game-changer,” said MiDO Academy CEO Dale Simons “It allows us to equip young South Africans with industry-relevant cybersecurity skills that are nationally recognised, practical and in high demand At the same time it offers South African organisations a credible partner for building internal cyber resilience while advancing their enterprise development and skills strategies ”
For companies partnering with MiDO as a QCTO-accredited SDP there are numerous benefits such as:
• training and hiring job-ready cybersecurity analysts with verified competencies;
• supporting a purpose-driven, youth-focused training initiative that delivers measurable transformation and socioeconomic impact;
• investing in a high-impact, nationally recognised qualification that contributes directly to organisational cyber resilience;
• the blended learning model includes formal instruction, simulated exercises, and supervised workplace experience; and
• benefiting from Section 12H tax deductions, Skills Development Levy returns, and enhanced B-BBEE scorecard contributions when investing in accredited training programmes through MiDO
With cybercrime on the rise and a limited pool of skilled defenders, SA faces an urgent need to develop local cybersecurity capacity The QCTO-accredited qualification ensures that learners acquire both the theoretical foundation and hands-on workplace readiness to defend against real-world threats
Through the programme, MiDO aims to empower underrepresented and underserved youth, particularly young women, to enter the digital economy, creating pathways into high-impact careers

According to Gaybreline Swartz, a Grade 10 learner, she knew a bit about recycling before attending the launch.
“I realised there is still a lot to learn I didn’t know milk cartons could be recycled, but I will start working within my community to do more to recycle,” she relates.
It is revelations like these that Edith Leeuta, CEO of Fibre Circle, hopes becomes part of the learners’ day-to-day thinking “We are excited and proud to participate in this initiative, which also aims to compliment the efforts already being done by the local municipality to encourage being green. Collaboration is so important; by working through partnership we can make a real impact on the school community and, in turn, the community at large,” she says.
Leeuta believes it takes change in head, heart and hands to truly make an impact.
The original Green Schools programme laid the foundation for recycling and sustainability education in schools. Fibre Circle expanded on this model through a successful pilot project, providing three recycling bins and educational support to Weber Gedenk Primary School in Jamestown.
The results highlighted the programme’s potential to be scaled and replicated. The 12 schools, including
Khayamandi and Stellenzicht high schools among others, that are part of the relaunch, received colour-coded recycling bins, educational materials aligned with the national curriculum, and ongoing training for teachers and learners alike, and scheduled recyclable waste collection by the municipality. Reducing and recycling waste in Stellenbosch is an important commitment as the Stellenbosch Municipality recently opened the last cell of its current landfill (“New landfill cell opened”, Eikestadnuus, 13 February).
According to Clayton Hendricks, the municipality’s senior manager of Waste Management, the aim is to lengthen the lifetime of the cell for as long as possible The hope is that being green becomes second nature for learners and that less recyclables make its way to landfills Grade 10 learner Conique Jones was aware of recycling before the launch, but didn’t realise the impact it can have on future generations “We need to do much more to recycle and tell more people about it because of the negative impact our waste will have on future generations,” Conique urges Kayden Goliath, a Grade 8 learner at Groendal Secondary, she believes recycling could help address pollution in her community.
Along with the many advantages of recycling, Leeuta says the economic benefits recycling has shouldn’t be overlooked “One man’s waste is another’s treasure. There is value in waste Collecting, cleaning and selling waste has led to the establishment of waste entrepreneurs Our vision is to create a formal system which can ease trading and help address critical issues in our communities, like unemployment.” Fibre Circle and its partners welcome additional support, both logistical and educational, to ensure the programme’s successful adoption and longevity Should your business wish to get involved, contact them by sending an email to info@fibercircle.co.za.

Let’s go foraging for mushrooms
On the picturesque slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain in Stellenbosch, a unique seasonal tradition unfolds each year as autumn’s first chill settles over the Cape Winelands.
At Delheim Wine Estate, conservation and culinary adventure blend seamlessly during the estate’s popular mushroom foraging hunts, guided by co-owner and passionate conservationist Nora Thiel
“There’s something magical about the moment when you spot that first pine ring or cep hiding beneath the forest floor,” explains Thiel, whose eyes light up when discussing the wild mushrooms that populate the estate’s old pine forest, planted decades ago by her father, the legendary Spatz Sperling
Zevenwacht Wine Estate in Kuils River, an environmental stronghold on the outskirts of Cape Town, was recently awarded Conservation Champion status by the World Wildlife Fund South Africa (WWF), in recognition of the establishment’s ongoing efforts to conserve renosterveld across approximately 15% of its farmland.
The first-generation wine farm acquired by Denise Johnson and her late husband Harold in 1992, is committed to environmental management and conservation, which are integrated into both its daily operations and long-term strategy. Environmental-management efforts include the removal of invasive alien vegetation, restoration and protection of valuable indigenous flora and fauna, and maintenance of sensitive water ecosystems.
TICKINGTHEBOXES
During a media tour held at the wine estate last Thursday (29 May), to celebrate its conservation achievements, Dwayne Brecht, a conservation champions extension officer, outlined the criteria for wine producers required to attain Conservation Champion status from the WWF. According to Brecht, the requirements are:
• an independent audit score of 70% or higher through the Integrated Production of Wine (IPW), the environmental sustainability scheme established by the South African wine industry in 1998;
• measurement of carbon footprint using the Confronting Climate Change (CCC) carbon calculator, along with the setting of reduction targets. The CCC initiative is a project developed to support the South African fruit and wine sectors in identifying and responding to the risks and opportunities associated with carbon emissions;
• demonstrated environmental commitment and leadership across three key focus areas namely nature and water conservation as well as energy and/ or waste management. Zevenwacht currently excels in all three, through initiatives such as the renosterveld restoration project, proactive water conservation measures and energy efficiency achieved via the installation of 884 solar panels on the cellar roof, in addition to a recycling programme; and
• a WWF-approved environmental management plan, co-developed with the WWF South Africa team.
ALLABOUTCONSERVATION
About 80 ha (around 15%) of Zevenwacht’s land have been designated a protected conservation area. This area forms part of the Bottelary Hills Renosterveld Conservancy (BHRC) since 1992 and supports a rich biodiversity, with an estimated 150 to 200 species of flora, alongside a variety of small mammals and birdlife.
Renosterveld flourishes across this landscape with the support of Lynda Muller, owner of Discover Renosterveld. Based in Devon Valley, she operates a specialised nursery focused primarily on cultivating renosterveld species.
Muller contributes to the rewilding of degraded agricultural land, such as areas within Zevenwacht, and also designs natural gardens in urban environments
As an active member of the BHRC, Zevenwacht is committed to the preservation of the Cape’s unique floral heritage, ensuring the conservation of renosterveld for the benefit of future generations.
ADIFFERENTKINDOFFLORA
Although not as widely recognised as fynbos, renosterveld is often mistaken for it. One of the key distinctions between the two lies in their soil preferences: renosterveld thrives on nutrient-rich soils, whereas fynbos typically grows on nutrient-poor soils found at higher elevations, according to Zevenwacht’s website. What makes renosterveld particularly remarkable is the abundance of seasonal wildflowers and bulbs, many of which bloom only briefly, from August to October These floral displays contribute to the Cape’s botanical richness.
Zevenwacht recognises the vital importance of its renosterveld-conservation area in the ongoing preservation and promotion of this unique and ecologically significant vegetation type, the website reported.
Notably, about 70% of the remaining renosterveld exists on privately owned land, underscoring the essential role that private stakeholders play in its protection.
The Bottelary Hills Conservancy, within which Zevenwacht is situated, has been designated a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) biodiversity hotspot and forms part of the Boland Biosphere Reserve, which is recognised as a World Heritage Site, according to Zevenwacht’s website
In 2009, Zevenwacht further demonstrated its environmental commitment by joining the Biodiversity and Wine Initiative (BWI), which encourages wine estates to manage and conserve indigenous fauna and flora. The Bottelary Hills Renosterveld Conservancy (BHRC) was founded in 1992 and registered as an NPO in 2008, and currently has 56 members
According to BHRC manager Christel Liebenberg, its mission is to “care for, expand and sustain the large tracts of renosterveld fynbos in its area and to launch projects to better the lives of the people living and working in the BHRC”.
“The conservancy is a vital buffer zone on the urban edge that strives to protect and maintain the area’s rich biodiversity,” a BHRC statement reads.
“Game such as caracal, grysbok, grey duiker, porcupine, bat-eared foxes, Cape foxes and otters still roam naturally. Many bird species are also found in the Bottelary Hills.”
The conservancy’s anti-poaching action group, under the leadership of the Bottelary Rural Response Unit, is also active on the Bottelary road. Numerous suspects were apprehended and indigenous flora were confiscated due to active reporting. Local authorities are notified and the necessary action is taken by law enforcement and Cape Nature.
“Conservation efforts in the BHRC include alien-invasive clearing, fighting the illegal harvesting of critically endangered renosterveld fynbos, strategic firebreaks, recycling, youth development and regular snare patrols with the Cape Leopard Trust.”
The ancient slopes of the mountain and particularly the estate’s pine forests become a treasure trove of wild fungi during the autumn months According to Thiel, who learnt the delicate art of mushroom foraging from South African mushroom guru Gary Goldman, the appearance of these earthly delicacies depended on a perfect symphony of natural conditions
“Mushrooms need humidity to grow, but they also require a shock to their system,” she says “When the first autumn rains and cold arrive, followed by sudden warmer days, the little heads of the mushrooms start popping out
“When the moon is full it is an added bonus. Mushrooms consist of 80% water, and it’s evident that the full moon affects them showing their heads ”
This connection between lunar cycles and fungal growth adds another layer of mystique to the foraging experience
But be warned, the foragers’ golden rule is safety first!
While Thiel has developed confidence in identifying certain edible varieties, she emphasises caution above all else “Some poisonous mushrooms can be mistaken for edible ones, and this can lead to serious
trouble ”
Her golden rule for amateur foragers is simple but potentially life-saving: “If you are not 100% sure, leave that mushroom alone ”
One of the most intriguing aspects of SA’s mushroom story is the origin of many-prized culinary species
Thiel points out that there are actually very few mushroom species endemic to South Africa Most varieties hunted for their culinary value arrived more than a century ago, hidden in the soil of oak trees imported from Europe or in horse feed brought by early settlers
This continental connection has created a unique fungal landscape which draws enthusiasts from across the country The popularity of Delheim’s mushroom foraging experiences has grown so much that this year’s event has expanded to two weekends, Friday 13 and Saturday 14 June and Friday 4 and Saturday 5 July Themushroomforagingexperiencecanbe bookedviaQuicket Spaceislimitedto35adults andfivechildrenperday

Briewe van ons lesers
Wie se Stellenbosch? ’n Herbesinning oor Botmaskop
Kosbare munt gesoek
Ek deel graag my storie oor ’n verlore Krugermunt van jare gelede
My pa het altyd gespot dat ek “soos ’n Krismisboom” lyk met al my juwele.
Ek het op ’n koue dag by die plaaslike Spar ’n glybeweging teen my bors gevoel terwyl my man buite gesels het.
Miskien het iemand my kosbare Krugermunt steeds veilig bewaar? As ek dit terugkry, slaap ek gewis daarmee langs my bed! Anna, E-POS
