Securityguardkilled
A day of football fun ended in tragedy this past Saturday (24 May) when a security guard was killed at the Khayamandi Sports Grounds
Stellenbosch police are investigating the death by shooting, which took place during an apparent robbery following the local soccer match
Police spokesperson Captain Nathalie Martin says officers were called to the sports facility at 19:00, where the body of an unknown man lay in the clubhouse
“The deceased was a security officer at the soccer stadium and, according to his colleague, they were working as security at the soccer stadium,” Martin says
“The last match was apparently just played when the people brought the flagpoles and other accessories into the clubhouse The door was suddenly closed by someone who instructed everyone present to behave, as another suspect produced a firearm and threatened the two security
guards, demanding they hand-over their firearms ”
According to eyewitness reports, the suspects hit the deceased security guard over the head with a torch Afterwards both guards were pushed into a small room where a shotgun was kept
The suspects managed to get hold of it and the two guards started pleading for their lives The deceased allegedly tried to push the suspects and a shot went off hitting him The persons who were being held in the clubhouse were apparently instructed to walk out together The suspects then fled with the shotgun and a Huawei P8 cellphone
The security guard was later declared dead on the scene by emergency personnel No arrests had been made in connection with the incident at the time of going to print Anyonewithinformationontheincidentis askedtocontactStellenboschpoliceon 0218095015or0825221912

Youths asked to ‘take risks wisely’
Yaël Malgas
In an effort to combat the growing concern around gambling habits countrywide, the South African Responsible Gambling Foundation (SARGF) visited Stellenbosch schools as part of its Taking Risks Wisely schools programme
According to Tumelo Mokoena, advocacy and communications assistant manager for SARGF, many young South Africans who find themselves addicted to gambling had a history of gambling as children
“Addiction is not something that happens overnight We find that many gamblers between 18 and 20 years, who are seeking help, took part in illegal activity as children Kids do not realise games like bingo, spinning coins or playing marbles for money is illegal gambling This is why we are reaching out to learners to warn them that gambling is only for someone 18 years or older,” Mokoena explains
The SARGF team along with representatives of Hollywoodbets visited Cloetesville, Kayamandi and Makapula
everything from stationery to helping learners who can’t afford school uniforms We also help with feeding schemes and have donated sport equipment and kits to various Stellenbosch schools this week,” she explains
According to the national gambling statistics drawn up by the National Gambling Board of South Africa (NGB), South Africans spent R1,1 billion on gambling during the 2023-’24 financial year InfoQuest, a South African online research company, conducted a survey with 300 gamblers last year and found playing the lottery is the most popular form of gambling This is followed by online gambling at 62% and sports betting (55%) The SARGF says young people who gamble illegally also gamble online
InfoQuest found that 25% of gamblers say they do so in the hopes of winning much needed extra money, while 23% indicate that they hope for a lucky break and 21% gamble in the hopes of a big payout to change their family’s life
“Decisions you make now can have a lasting effect when you are older There are rules when it comes to gam-

“Gambling in itself is not a problem It is when an addiction is formed that we find people borrowing or stealing money to gamble or locking their children in vehicles when they are at casinos,”

Child Protection Week started at the Khayamandi Sports Ground on Tuesday (27 May) and little ones from various early education centres in the neighbourhood came together.
This year’s theme is “Working together to end violence against children”. Officials from the Stellenbosch Municipality, the local emergency and fire services and local libraries were on hand to teach learners more about their safety and who to ask for help. There was also fun and games thanks to the team from the Cotlands Toy Library

Purposeful pedalling
Growing up in Ida’s Valley, Eon Hendrikse’s daily bicycle commute to Paul Roos Gymnasium was more than just a way to get to school; it was where his passion for cycling first took root.
Some years later, while pusuing an LLB degree at university, this Stellenbosch Network Entrepreneur of the Month for May found himself on a bike again, this time for a far more meaningful purpose “I noted the struggles some of our elderly residents were experiencing just to collect their medication,” he related
“They’d have to stand in long queues at the clinic, wake up early in the freezing cold, and many didn’t have any means of getting there I had a healthy body, a bike and knew the area well, so I just started helping out where I could ” What began as a small, voluntary effort quickly grew Hendrikse’s nephew joined him in delivering freshly-baked koeksisters on Sundays What worked in their favour at the time was that traditional delivery apps avoided the area for safety reasons As time went by the gap in delivery services became more obvious, one that needed to be filled The bicycling initiative he came up with had to be put on the backburner for lack of a formal business structure and resources
That changed when Hendrikse was introduced to STROOM, a business and Stellenbosch Network member, led by Bouwer and

Carlien van Niekerk Their business pilots locally-manufactured, electric-assisted cargo bikes and e-cargo trailers that could carry goods quickly, safely and sustainably without petrol and with minimal environmental impact
Hendrikse, his brother and a few other Ida’s Valley locals were invited to pilot these innovations
The bikes, built by STROOM, can carry up to 150 kg, using their own battery systems The pilot involved testing the bikes with real deliveries, ranging from newspapers to fresh produce
From this pilot Hendrikse Deliveries was officially born “Having that support changed everything,” its owner recalled “We were no longer just trying to help; we were now building something that could grow ” Although still in its early stages Hendrikse Deliveries has a strong foundation With a handful of clients, a small team and plenty of ambition, Hendrikse is steadily building a business rooted in
community, sustainability and mobility
The partnership with STROOM continues to be central to Hendrikse Deliveries Both businesses share a vision of a greener, more connected Stellenbosch, one where job creation, innovation, and mobility go hand in hand
Through a further collaboration with the Greater Stellenbosch Trust and the Social Employment Fund, Hendrikse and his team are now educating local residents about e-cargo bikes and last-mile delivery systems “The idea is to equip people with the skills to become riders,” Hendrikse pointed out, “but also to understand how these bikes are built and maintained Eventually we want to see people start their own businesses ”
But no new venture comes without challenges “Trying to formalise the big ideas in my head has been one of the hardest parts,” said Hendrikse “But being part of the Stellenbosch Network gave me access to people and support that helped me start shaping a real business.”
His advice to other new entrepreneurs is to “stay curious, seek help, don’t take no for an answer, and build something that improves lives, that’s the way to build something sustainable”
Whether it’s delivering medication to someone’s door or starting conversations around green mobility, Hendrikse Deliveries is proving that small ideas, powered by purpose, can go a long way

Siphamandla Betana, a barista at Starbucks FX Stellenbosch, has been crowned the best of the best in the Starbucks’ Regional Barista Championship
The championship, which took place earlier this month, is a celebration of coffee knowledge, creativity and passion, says Ishan Natalie, coffee excellence lead at Rand Capital Coffee, the license holder of Starbucks SA Training to become a Starbucks partner – as the company’s baristas are known – is no simple affair The baristas spend months immersing themselves in coffee knowledge and lore, with a handson curriculum
“We love recognising the hard work our partners invest in finetuning their craft,” says Natalie “That’s why the Regional Barista Championships are always such an exciting event ”
Betana, a store manager at Starbucks FX Stellenbosch, was one of five partners, selected from the district championships, who could show off their prowess at the regional championships He was inspired to enter the championships after viewing the success of fellow partner Phuti Mmotla, who was named Starbucks Barista EMEA Champion in 2022
“My journey began out of curiosity, but quickly grew into a deep passion for coffee, people and storytelling I have seen how a single cup can shift someone's day, how a partner’s passion can light up a store and how coffee connects beyond the surface Competing was my way of honouring that connection,

representing the partners I have grown with and challenging myself to rise beyond my known limitations ”
The competition was introduced by Starbucks with the store championships, with winners from this leg advancing to the district championships, which were held in March
The recent regional championships saw partners from the KwaZulu-Natal, Western Cape and Central regions battling it out for a chance to participate in the National Barista Championships in June.
The winner of this coveted title competes in the Starbucks EMEA Championships in London, where other national champions will showcase their skills
“Winning is an honour, but more than that, I hope this journey encourages others to pursue excellence, take bold steps and realise that greatness starts with one cup and one moment of courage,” Betana says

No stopping young Tylon
Tasmin Cupido
He is the (unofficial) best under-20 player on the African continent!
The euphoria and exhilaration of winning the Player of the Tournament award at the recent under-20 African Cup of Nations (Afcon) may have simmered down somewhat, but for local soccer star Tylon Smith, the gravitas of his individual achievement is only just settling in. To top it all off, the talented centre-back was part of the South African under-20 team, fondly called Amajita, that made history when they lifted the coveted trophy for the first time, following a 1-0 victory over Morocco in the final in Egypt on Sunday 18 May. “It was a great honour for me to be part of the victorious South African team,” Smith says. “It was the best experience ever! Playing against Morocco in the final, we had a score to settle, after they defeated SA in the final in 1997. Here we are, 28 years later, getting our sweet revenge... It really was the best experience for me.”
The champions of Africa dominated the individual awards, with Fletcher Lowe winning the Best Goalkeeper Award and
coach Raymond Mdaka being named the tourney’s best coach.
The talented footballer, who was born and bred in Jamestown, played an instrumental part in Amajita’s road to the final, especially in the team’s semi-final clash against their Nigerian counterparts. The 20-year-old with the characteristic mop of black and blond curls scored the team’s only goal in the encounter, securing the team’s spot in the final and instantly making waves in soccer circles countrywide.
He describes that moment of finding the back of the net as “exhilirating”, recalling the sheer elation that swept through him.
CELEBRATIONS
“Scoring the winning goal to take the team to the final was exhilarating,” Smith, an alumnus of Stellenzicht Secondary School, recalls. “Imagine the rush of adrenaline as you score, followed by the celebrations with your teammates. It’s a moment of pure joy and relief, especially if your team has worked hard to reach that point. And the goal was not scored against just any team, but against Nigeria’s ‘Flying Eagles’, which made it all so much more rewarding.’’

Smith may not have replicated that pivotal semi-final moment in the final, but his overall performance throughout the Afcon tournament impressed so much that he was awarded the competition’s top individual prize, an accolade that he is humbled and honoured to have received. But he admits, he was surprised when his name was called at the prize-giving after the final.
“To be honest, in such big tournaments the Player of the Tournament trophy is never given to a centre-back; it is mostly awarded to attacking players like strikers and midfielders,” he points out.
“When my name was called, my heart was filled with joy. It means so much to me, because in a way, the award does not only recognise me as the best player of the tournament, but also in my age group in the whole of Africa.
CHALLENGES FACED
“Receiving an award of this calibre is a tremendous honor and great motivation. Since receiving it, I have been reminded of the challenges that I have faced on my journey and how I have managed to overcome these through hard work and perseverance to be the best version of my-
self and reach my full potential. I am also reminded of the saying, ‘Work in silence; let your success be your noise’. Today I am able to say that my successes are noisy.”

His proud parents shared in his elation, walking the road with the soccer star from youth football, to him signing his first professional soccer contract with Stellenbosch FC to his recent success on the continental stage. “My parents were so happy for me. They also know how hard I have worked to get to this point, and how dedicated I am when it comes to my soccer,” Smith says.
“My mother has always prayed for me, especially during the Afcon tournament, and I cannot thank her enough.”
Smith and the rest of the Amajita squad are now shifting their focus to preparing for the Fifa u-20 Soccer World Cup, which will be held in Chile in September and October. The defender is looking forward to again donning the green and gold on a global stage, labelling the opportunity to participate in the global football showpiece as “an incredible honour”.

Gemengde uitslae vir plaaslike rugbyklubs
Avril Fillies
• SLA: Brackenfell t. VDE
• SLB: Kylemore t. Hamlets
Furthering the beautiful game

Siphiwe Tshabalala, the Bafana Bafana player who scored the first goal in the 2010 World Cup, is one of the coaches who
will share his knowledge and skills with the youth.
No Manchester City player will be in attendance, but other locals will take the players through their paces.
The programme includes technical and tactical understanding of the game, as well as moments in the game, small sided games, merchandise handover and an opportunity for photos.
